Baked is a love story with a twist – it’s about cakes. We’ve all read stories about people falling in love, but how many people have read a story about a love affair between two foods? Go on, have another...
Lacey Dearie is a writer from Ayrshire, Scotland. She has lived her whole life in the Ayrshire countryside and sets many of her stories in this area, or in the places where her extended family live.
On leaving school in 1995, she chose an entrepreneurial career path, which later led to a job in book-keeping before working for over a decade as a paralegal. She also ran a small perfumery for a short time and has worked as a mystery shopper since 2007, partly because she likes the glamour of being a spy, although it's actually super boring and there's a lot of paperwork involved.
She returned to study in her 30s, undertaking a BA in Arts & Humanities with the Open University in Scotland, where she gained a distinction in creative writing. She has also studied Comparative and World Literature with Harvard's online program, Harvard X and History of Religion, specifically magical beliefs in the Middle Ages with the Universitat de Barcelona.
Since 2002, she has written for a variety of publications, both in print and online. She is the author of 39 cat sleuth novellas, 2 chick-lit novels, 3 stories about sexually active foods and a blog named Rock Paper Spirit. She has also written a Chaka Demus and Pliers tribute musical, just to pass the time.
She has been an associate member of the Cat Writers Association since 2018.
I was a little unsure at first, but the easy writing and flowing dialogue helped me in. Also, it seems that I have a softer spot for cakes than I do human beings, a bit worrying that! It soon became clear that the British style of comedy was going to meet my needs in terms of humour. Particularly the very camp, Carry-on style inuendo. I chuckled many times at the idea of jam accidentally squeezing out, or a cake laying back to show off their chocolatey shine. I was a little concerned at first with how Lacey would treat the idea of cakes being eaten, but she came up with the idea that they want to be eaten, like it was some sort of promised land. As if they were going to heaven.
I thought Lacey also did a good job with the interactions between the cakes, particularly the two dippy strawberry tarts, as well as the self-righteous banana. I think the banana was my favourite character. I read him as a cocky South American lover boy, might have been wrong but it worked for me. In fact, the least exciting interactions were between the two lovers, but that might say more about me than anything else.
Although being a short story, the whole book was shorter than I expected. At the end I kind of wanted a little bit more, and I think that says a lot about the writing and story, particularly how relatable it is. The cake shop and office settings made me think about parts of my life and I understood what the mood would be like in both places. It was interesting seeing them from the point of view of cakes, wondering what it is exactly humans do in those places.
After finishing and thinking the story over for a while, I realised that it stopped in a good place. Had it continued it could have either got a little disgusting or crude. So, yeah, it was a fun read with some really good dialogue. Had it been a straight romance with humans I think I would have disliked it, but the cake based premise definitely made it a good read for me.
Romeo and Juliet eat your heart out, meet Jamie the doughnut and Fifi the chocolate éclair. They come from different sides of the shop, will they ever get together?
Baked is a delicious short story with its tongue set firmly in its cheek. The characters are strong and in such a short space of time, you immediately engage with them. The descriptive devices are really cute and when Jamie gets a little excited is hilarious. It is really well produced and great fun.
Definitely worth downloading for a little morsel of glee.
Baked! by Lacey Dearie A love story at the bakery shop. The donuts in the display case are trying to connect to the eclair. They do have some things in common-they have chocolate drizzled on the top. Several customers buy some donuts and then one man comes in wanting a box full of assorted ones. It's there chance to get out of the case so they make themselves look appealing and it works for the jelly filled doughnut. There is much conversation as some pastries are not eaten right away and they bet on who will be tossed in the bin or eaten. Cute little story.
BAKE SHOP LOVE If you're looking for a cute, short, sweet, tongue-in-cheek story, may I recommended BAKED! Jamie, the jelly doughnut has fallen in love with the luscious Fifi, a chocolate eclair. He gazes longingly at her from afar, but what are the chances for a sweet happy ending? For all of us jelly doughnuts out there who have no chance with the creamstick of our dreams, this delightful confection is for us!
I actually read the sequel before I read this and I can really see the connection. Dearie's got an interesting world where the short-lived characters are making the most of their lives until they meet their greatest goal of getting eaten.
