"Süpermen kafayı yese ve katliam yapmaya başlasa ne olurdu" fikrinden yola çıkan pek kanlı çizgi roman. DC'nin kurguladığı, elini sallasan pelerine değen dünyanın daha sade olmakla birlikte yine de bir çeşit klonunda geçiyor hikaye. Kare kare klonlanmış bir dünya görmüyoruz, bu alemin Wonder Woman'ı ile bu alemin Flash'ı, el ele tutup bu alemin Aquaman'i ile toşbil geçerken,
Batman ile halaya
durmuyor belki ama organizasyonlar, güç dengeleri ve insanlarla kahramanlar arası etkileşimler yeterince benziyor(düşündüm de aslında bir Batman'in yokluğu da belli ha, Batman olsaydı çözerdi!) İnsanların sevdiği, umut ve adalet kaynağı olarak gördükleri, yegane idollerinin bir gün tepesi atıyor ve tarihte görülmüş en büyük soy kırım girişimi başlıyor.
Aslında kötü Süpermen sıklıkla karşımıza çıkan bir konu ana akım çizgi roman dünyasının son yıllarında. Boys'da Homelander, Invincible'da Omni-Man, Eternals'da Ikaris, Marvel'in Hyperion'u ve DC'nin Ultraman'i derken pelerini alan, ışığı gören geliyor "KAWGA!" diye, "MEWZU!" diye. (Sen! O arkadaki... "incastıs da var! incastıs da var!" diyen kıpır kıpır oğlan; sen evet, bakma sağa sola! Biliyoruz oğlum, bi' sakin!) Irredeemable'da da Süpermenimiz Plutonian bir gün kafayı çiziyor ve sıkıyor ışını, veriyor lazeri. Yeri geliyor önce okul otobüsündekileri pişiriyor, yeri geliyor polisi alıp, polisi polisle dövüyor. İlk tepesinin attığı anda hikayenin Metropolis'i Sky-City'nin içinden geçen süper kötümüz, ardında 3.5 milyon ceset bırakıyor sonra da bu alemin yancı süper kahramanlarının peşine düşüyor. Bu yancılar da bir taraftan götleri yanmış bir şekilde kaçışıyor, bir taraftan da Plutoşu kim delirtti ve elemanı nasıl durduracağız derdine düşüyorlar.
Süpermen hikayesin en belirleyici unsurlarından biri, Süpo'nun mutlak optimizmi ve sarsılmaz yüce değerleridir. Dünya yıkılır ama ahlaki olarak Süpo o kadar sağlamdır ki günün sonunda hep bir şekilde çözüm bulur sorunlara. Hani, süper gücü olmasa bile o aslında aramızdakinin en iyisidir, yerse yani... Burada da Plutonian üstün ahlaki değerleri ile tanınan, muhteşem bir Amerikan kahramanı. Fakat bir kez sınırı geçtikten sonra, herhangi bir noktada kendini tutacak bir mekanizması da kalmıyor. Hikaye de ismini aslında tam da buradan alıyor. Yaptığı eylem o kadar kesin, o kadar şiddetli ve o kadar geri dönülmez ki, katliama devam etmek dışında bir seçeneği de yakın gelecekte gözükmüyor.
Aslında hikayeyi diğer benzerlerinden ayıran en net fark, Plutonian'ın mutlak acımasızlığı. Gayet sert açılıyor kitap. Daha üçüncü sayfasında kucağında bebekle kaçmaya çalışırken Plutonian tarafından yakılarak katledilen masum anne ile karşılıyoruz. Ailesini katlettiği küçük bir kıza yaklaşıp "Korkacak bir şey yok, ben süper Kahramanım" diye sırıtan Plutonian aslında neler göreceğimizi de özetliyor. Tabii bunun kötü yanı da baştan çııtayı fazla üst bir noktaya koymanın hikayenin devamında kullanılan çok üst seviyede şiddet sahnelerinin vuruculuğunu azaltması. Yani evet, şehirdeki yıkıma başlarken önce okulu ziyaret etmeli soykırım etkili bir görsel anlatım olabilir ama ilk kez kömürleşmiş, hala için için tüten çocuk cesetleri sahnesini izledikten sonra insan biraz alışıyor şiddette. "Plutonian, tatlım... Sence de ilişkimiz biraz rutine binmedi mi?" diyor, "hiç birlikte yeni ve denenmiş katliamlar denemiyoruz, hep çocuk yakıyoruz hep çocuk yakıyoruz, sence yürüyor mu böyle?" diye tartışma açmak istiyor. Şahsen ben bu kadar katliam yaptıktan sonra bi' sıkılır, değişiklik arayışına girerdim. Hiç olmadı üç beş tane yancı tutar, çocukları mancınıklarla bağlatır, yukarıya uçup "Fırlaaat!" diye bağırırdım. öyle "Vıjjj" diye geçtin "KATOTOPARKKKK" diye patlattın, "BOZZAAA" diye yaktın falan, e nereye kadar? DSİ'de mesaiye gider gibi sabah 9 akşam 5 süper villaınlık yapacaksam ne anladım ben o işten?
Bu Süpo yancıları kahramanların çeşitli çap ve ebatta aptallıkları da galiba bu janranın olmazsa olmazlarından. Saçma sapan kararlar, gereksiz dövüşler ve pek miktarda orijin flashbackleri gırla gidiyor. Yani tamam, duygusal travmalar gırla, teker teker ölüyorsunuz anladık ama iki tane gerzek olmayan kahraman beşinci sayıda bitirirdi işi. Ancak hikayenin bir bütün halinde değil episodik biçimde yazılmasının bazı tatsızlıkları da görünür oluyor bu çer-çöp tayfada. Örneğin, yeni sayıda bir manifest olsun, bir değişiklik olsun, kahramanlardan birine yeni bir güç eklemek istedi diyelim yazarımız, bir anda yancı süperlerimizin hali tavrı hayvan gibi değişebiliyor. Elini sallasan süpere değmiyor en azından (lan o Injustice neydi? Yok yeşil fenerliler, sarı yüzüklüler geliyor. Onlar gidiyor, büyücüler geliyor, büyücüler gidiyor diğer uzaylılar geliyor. Oradan okyanustakiler çıkıyor "abi bizlik bir şey var mı?" diye. 20 cilt boyu bitmediydi kombinasyonları) Arada dandik dandik maceralar yaşanmıyor değil ama çok da göze batmıyor.
Aslında durumu korkunç yapan en büyük etmen Plutonian'ın yok edilemez bir yarı tanrı olması değil, uzlaşılamaz oluşu. Son yılların en popüler Evil Superman hikayesi olduğundan the Boys ile karşılaştıracağım; Boys'da bir gün Homelander'ın dönüşmesinden korkulan şey aslında Plutonian. Üstelik sağa sola saldıran ahmak bir katil de değil. Son derece soğuk kanlı ve organize bir şekilde katliam yapan, geniş bir skalaya yayılan güçlerini etkin şekilde kullanabilen, karşıdakinin taktiklerini hızlıca anlayabilen, başarılı ön görüler kurabilen, istihbarat ve karşı istihbarat konusunda da etkin muazzam bir yok edici. Bir şehri yok edeceği zaman sistematik ve planlı olarak çalışıyor. Kalabalık yerlerden başlayarak insan yakıyor, kaçanların peşinden koşup zaman kaybetmeyerek katliamı maksimize ediyor. Ardından kaçanların ulaştığı sokağa geçerek devam ediyor. Üslubu da daha ciddi bir çizgi roman elimizdeki. Boys'da yapıldığı gibi şiddeti pornografik karikatür seviyesine çıkartarak hikayeye komedi unsuru katmıyor ve bu sayede yumuşatmıyor mesela. Bilakis empati duygusuna saldırarak rahatsız edici olmaya çalışıyor ve şiddeti etkin bir hikayecilik unsuru olarak kullanıyor (her ne kadar başta bahsettiğim bir erken doz aşımı durumu söz konusu olsa da)
Irredeemable ihtiyacı olan dramayı da süper kahraman komünitesinin ilişkilerinden çıkarıyor. Biraz kimin eli kimin cebinde bir durum söz konusu. Plutonian ile birlikte çalışmış bir alay insana ek olarak o onun manitası, bu bunun eksi, yok onlar dağın tepesinde sevişmiş, beriki gruba girmiş. Ortamda devamlı bir "orta sehpahada cips, kuruyemiş ve vodka-redbull gözükmeli, aşırı naylon çoraplı Niğde Swinger sofrası Twit'i" vibe'ı var. Ki şöyle durumlarda aslında ilk bunları kurşuna dizeceksin, öyle tartışacaksın ne yapalım diye. Yoksa belli, "aha bu dramatik oğlan, bunu vurmazlarsa kesin sorun çıkaracak" diyorsun yani okurken. Lan adam 3.5 milyon ile ölüyle başlamış yolculuğa, dünya lezzet duraklarına uğrar gibi sıka sıka dolanıyor; sen hala poz kesiyor, "ama o benim dostumdu," çekiyorsun...

Bir ufak da formattan bahsetmek istiyorum review'in sonunda: Ben dijital çizgi roman okumaya pek alışık değilim. Normal kitapta e-book tercih ettiğim bir format olsa da son bir kaç yıldır(ki kitap içinde arama yapabilmek, entegre database kullanımı, font tipi ve büyüklüğü değiştirebilmek, bir texti meta olarak kullanabilmek gibi avantajlar düşünüldüğünde, kitap tutmak veya kitap kokusu gibi "ilkel kabile adetlerinin" hiç şansı yok gerçekten.) çizgi romana gelince konu, basılı görmek istiyorum. Bunun asli nedeni, e-ink teknolojisinin renkli tarafta hala gelişmemiş olması olsa da, aniden gelen ilhamlarla çizgi romanlarımı raftan indirip hızlıca göz atmayı, karıştırmayı sevmem de önemli bir neden.
Kitap aslında yakın zamanda, yine omnibus formatında Türkçeye çevrilmişti ancak özel bir baskı olduğundan, maalesef benim zavallı bütçeme fazla geldi ve Dijital Omnibus'a düşmüş bulundum. O yüzden biraz dede gibi konuşacağım ama Ipad'de çizgi roman okumak da benim için yeni bir deneyim oldu. Sevdim mi? Emin değilim. Cehennemin dibine kadar panelleri büyütebilmek, yorgun gözlerime yüklenmeden ilgimi çeken detayları uzun uzun inceleyebilmek baya hoşuma gitse de, kuşe kağıda baskının yerini hala tutmadığını düşünüyorum. (2022 yılında "Ipadde çizgi roman okumak" da anlattım ya, kusura bakmayın artık; İşte bunlar hep yaşlılık!)
Okuduğum dijital omnibusun sonu itibariyle ben her ne kadar "aslında hikaye bitse de biter burada ha" desem de, pek bir cliffhanger noktada sona eriyor. Az üstte de bahsettiğim gibi kitap, omnibus formatında bizde de yayınlandı. Limitli ve benim için çok pahalı olsa da; çok da iyi bir baskısı var üstelik. Felix Koleksiyon'un yayınladığı versiyon , elinize aldığınızda son derece tatmin edici hissettiren(hehe), cildiyle, baskısıyla, balonlamasıyla gayet ince ve kaliteli de bir işçilik ürünü üstelik. Ellerinde kaç tane kalmıştır bilmiyorum ama dilerseniz halihazırda (Ekim 2022) Felix'in sitesinden sipariş verilebilir durumda.
Kitap için öldüm bittim diyemem sizin de yukarıdaki yazılar bütününden anlayabileceğiniz üzere. Ama kötü Süpermen hikayeleri arasında yukarıda bir yerde şu ana kadar okuduğum kadarıyla ve doğası gereği biraz dandik ve çocukça olan süper kahraman janrasından bence okunabilecek kadar ayrışabiliyor. Kuvvetle muhtemel okumaya devam edeceğim.

Felix Koleksiyon'un yayınladığı versiyon , elinize aldığınızda son derece tatmin edici hissettiren(hehe), cildiyle, baskısıyla, balonlamasıyla gayet ince ve kaliteli de bir işçilik ürünü üstelik. Ellerinde kaç tane kalmıştır bilmiyorum ama dilerseniz halihazırda (Ekim 2022) Felix'in sitesinden sipariş verilebilir durumda.
Kitap için öldüm bittim diyemem sizin de yukarıdaki yazılar bütününden anlayabileceğiniz üzere. Ama kötü Süpermen hikayeleri arasında yukarıda bir yerde şu ana kadar okuduğum kadarıyla ve doğası gereği biraz dandik ve çocukça olan süper kahraman janrasından bence okunabilecek kadar ayrışabiliyor. Kuvvetle muhtemel okumaya devam edeceğim.

Had this on my iPad with the intention of reading it for years. When i finally got around to reading it, I could not put it down. It's so good! The premise is what would happen if the most powerful superhuman turned evil. Morrison writes in the afterward of the first issue that this book is Mark Waid writing against type, and that couldn't be more true. We associate Waid with some classic superhero stories (birthright, his flash and fantastic four runs among many others) so it's great to see writing something like this

This is absolutely great! I can't believe it's not more well known as honestly this is close to entering Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen territory, at least to me. Not quite there, but close.
It's not an entirely new story, as in simple terms this is "What if Superman Turned Bad?" We have the "JLA" banding together in attempt to stop him, and there's a ton of twists and turns along the way. And this is not the all ages type story, this is the Black Label type story where you get the more "adult" parts of the hero's life thrown in as well.
There's really too much going on to get into in a review, but Mark Waid has found the "right way" to do this type of a story, and the art is great as well.
Now, I just hope the second half is as good as the first. There may be a reason this isn't more well known, and I don't want the reason to be "because the ending sucked."
In any case, this volume is great and I can't wait to see how things end up.

What I wanted out of this was The Mighty, but more of it, and written by Mark Waid. The Mighty answers the question "What if Superman decided, in this quest to make Earth peaceful, that the ends justified the means?" That is the story I wanted from Irredeemable.
Irredeemable is in no way that story.
Irredeemable, instead, asks the question "What if Superman lived is a world where people act the way people actually act? Where he could hear calls for help 24/7, knowing he couldn't help them all? Where he was taken for granted because he was always saving the day? Where if they weren't saved perfectly, Supes was suddenly to blame? What happens when he really does screw up and the pressures of a lifetime finally break him?"
Once I let go of the first question and embraced the second series of questions, this is a great ride. My primary complaint is how the series starts. We are not given a chance to seeSuperman Plutonian actually being a good guy. We aren't warmed up to him, so there is no betrayal for the reader. It isn't so much "Superman turns evil" as it is "Apocalypse being Apocalypse." They certainly explain that he was the greatest of Earth's heroes and that events are a shock to everyone, but I didn't actually feel it until much later in the series. Since this is an obvious Superman analogue, it doesn't distract too much, but it does enough.
While not perfect, the entire run (37 issues) is certainly worth your time if "Superman turns evil" at all tickles your fancy.

I should start by noting that I didn't actually read the Omnibus, I read smaller volumes which collect the same issues of the comic, but I didn't really want to review different parts of Irredeemable separately more than I had to, so this lets me get down to two reviews.
Irredeemable is a very interesting tale about a powerful being becoming unhinged. It tells this tale with a certain amount of horror for the actions of the being and a certain amount of sympathy. It does a marvelous job of avoiding cookie cutter characters, instead striving to give each one their own depth and history. The dialogue is very good, although there were a few moments where it didn't ring completely true to me.
The layout and art were good, conveying emotion well. I had a little bit of trouble in the late middle of this volume sometimes telling what was a flashback and what was present day, but I worked it all out in the end. In the overall, this is a gripping comic book tale steeped in the mythos of superheroes, but examining it from a very fresh and interesting perspective. It's very well done in almost every way and I recommend it.

Mark Waid’s Irredeemable is basically Watchmen mixed with Injustice with a sprinkling of The Boys. And, it’s better than all of those. It’s scary, brutal, cool and has twists and turns that have me regularly exclaiming words like “fuck!” and “oh shit!”
I really can’t recommend this juicy treat enough. You should be reading it time NOW!

Irredeemable asks the question: What if Superman became evil? We watch the fall of the world's greatest superhero, the Plutonian, how his friends and fellow superheroes attempt to find a way to stop his rampage while dealing with their own problems of betrayal and hopelessness. And being a superhero comic, there are alternate dimensions, aliens, supervillains, myths become real, and the spirit realm for good measure.
I originally read this and the companion series Incorruptible in 2011-12, toward the end of their run. It was also one of the first comic series I bought in e-format. Originally, I found this take on superheroes to be far more interesting and rewarding than the sort of stories we usually see. The old Spiderman quote, "With great power comes great responsibility"* butts heads with "Absolute power corrupts absolutely" in this story to great effect.
Whenever I think of superheroes, I always think of this series.** Re-reading the series in one sitting made me appreciate more of the story. During my first read through, I thought segments of the series in the run-up to the final arc got bogged down in their own intricacy and lack of relevance to the main story. But this time, I appreciate their inclusion more, even if it did slow the pacing a bit.
If you like superhero stories, then this will probably be a refreshing shot in the arm.
* Although, this quote predates Spiderman by a couple of hundred years.
** And Garth Ennis' The Boys. I guess standard superhero stories just don't interest me the same way.

Twisting John Steinbecks thesis on East of Eden ( "And now that you don't have to be perfect, you can be good" ). I appreciate how this comic book handles it's violence whether it be murders or sexual assaults by not dwelling on recreating the acts but instead showing the effects. This type of storytelling avoids the more salacious motivations of other comic books from that time period (I'm looking at you Robert Kirkmans "Invincible " & Garth Ennis's "The Boys " &" Crossed"). It's a pretty decent telling of a fall from grace. Of what happens when a God has a tantrum and refuses to stop.
I recommend this wholeheartedly. Especially for lovers of the Amazon series The Boys & Invincible. You will not regret it .

I wasn't quite as blown away by this as I thought I might be. I generally like the work of Mark Waid ("like" may be too pale a word) and I expected this to be more seminal.
I recently read through the whole of Garth Ennis' "The Boys", and that seems to take the whole anti-superhero thing about as far as it can go, and perhaps farther than what I've seen so far in "Irredeemable."
Whereas Ennis' plots often include crudeness and debauch to the point of vulgarity, Waid's plotting is more closely aligned with the world of Superman that "Irredeemable" is so clearly embroidering. That makes it an easier read without necessarily reducing the impact of the horrendous happenings.
I'll have to read the whole to see what I think.

"What if Superman one day decided to go evil?" is the basic premise of Irredeemable, and although it's something most people have probably pondered for a few seconds before moving on, Mark Waid developed a series around it. I'm surprised by how much of this book feels like a horror book, mostly through suspense; the threat of the Plutonian possibly showing up to wreak havoc is palpable in every page, and makes you a little reluctant to keep reading; feels more like a Scott Snyder book than a Waid one. Still, the story is interesting, the art suits it, and this first collection ends on a totally unexpected cliffhanger.

What if Superman lost his shit, broke bad, and became the ultimate villain? This was stellar. Great, compelling characters... and the plot took so many twists and turns you don't know how it will end until it does. In a way, it reminds me of Watchmen, with the similar character tropes, but only if Dr. Manhattan became evil and there was no hope to stop him. How do you stop a god? Really one of the best stories I've read and would recommend it to anyone, even those (ESPECIALLY those) who do not read comics. 5/5

The premise, basically, is this: what if Superman suddenly snapped and went on a rampage? What could have been a disaster-movie-style series of explosions turns into an exploration of betrayal, loss, and the psychological costs of "with great power comes great responsibility".
Supremely well-written, complex characters. A setting that is both familiar and incredibly novel. There's a really good reason that this was nominated for both a Harvey Award and an Eisner Award.

A very solid series of comics that will get almost any reader into comics. A solid set-up, plot, series of characters, and build. It gets slow once every 10 issues or so but 9/10 ain't bad. Highly recommended.

This series is fantastic, easily the best of the "what if super heroes went bad" story lines I've read. I can't recommend it highly enough. Mark Waid has a new fan.
