Can the girls out-dance Carla to the Nationals, or will distractions undermine everything they’ve worked so hard for?

Julie, Lucy and Alia are best friends and share the same passion: dance. Piling on the classes, they’re training hard to get into the National Ballet Competition in Paris. One main rival is right in their very school: archenemy Carla. These three will have to balance competition, new boyfriends, and classes without letting things get out of hand.

This is a book of comics, really, even though I marked it graphic novel. No story or joke runs for longer than a two page spread, with most actually being just one page. A couple of times the jokes were a little cringy-- there is an almost normally sized girl (as opposed to the very skinny other girls) and they keep her from eating cake once. No one ever comments on her size, but the cake joke comes back later when she is dating a boy and they both stare at cake longingly through a bakery window. There's also another boy who talks about "all girls" as being complicated. The girls slap boys a lot... Hmm... the more I'm listing things I didn't like, the more of it I'm realizing there was...

I think this book is a great book for little kids. There’s seven books in the series and I feel like a lot of kids would like this since I’m like nine years old I like it cause I do a bunch of dance, but if you don’t really like dance and you don’t like watching dance This book is not really for you. It’s mainly about dance, but I like it cause I’m a dancer.

I like these books, but I really like them when the story is cohesive and more like a graphic novel than a serialized collection of strips.

Petite relecture de ma série BD préférée pendant ma semaine de bac pour me détendre. Toujours un plaisir de me replonger dans cet univers notamment avec leurs histoires d'amour.

I think this book would be a fun one for upper elementary aged girls to middle school girls who enjoy dancing. Not only that but I feel it applies to most every other girl as well because it talks about boys, food and also family. A couple of the scenarios seemed to be a little far fetched and gave off a bit of bad advice for how girls should interact with their teachers and I'm not sure I would really put this in my classroom because of the negative attention it draws to those kinds of situations. I also had trouble reading it because it was the first graphic novel I had read and I had trouble following the story line. But after I got through about half of the book, it started to click and I could follow it much better. I was never in dance so the text to self connection is a bit hard to grasp. I think the connection I made with it though was the way the girls were daydreaming in class and when I was younger, I did that quite often as well. For the text to text connection, I felt like it was similar to other books I have read before about girls and their love for something. It showed them having their life set around one hobby and how dedicated they were to it and how nothing else, besides "boys", seemed to matter. The text to world connection seems very clear because many girls who enjoy dance, flirting, and family interaction would love this book and be able to relate it to it because they most likely have had similar situations in their own life during high school or middle school.

I'm not in love with the books but Miss 7 is enjoying them. We read Books 4, 5, 6 as part of a combined volume. The girls dance in Paris, Russia, and England. Mostly things are light hearted and revolve around dance (and fashion). Carla, as ever, remains a one-dimensional villain. I talk with Miss while reading them about why it's not okay (or funny) for the book to repeatedly show girls slapping boys in the faces when they get annoyed. We also discuss some of the more sexist messages in the book (like soccer is for boys, or that girls can't be book-smart as well as pursue a creative calling).

Miss 7 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.

Another installment of the series that Erin loves so much. I personally think it's because there is some very light romance!
