This is the final chapter of the "Darkness and Daemons" assault. "Invasion Event #5: The Infectious" will make or break humanity's desperate defense against unknown forces originating from within various "gates" that open in the Earth.
In this part we meet the good Dr. Alexander Hunt, Professor of Molecular Biology at the University of California, and one of the top three ranking officials within the secret agency known as T.A.C.T. His purpose in the organization is to collect liquid samples for subsequent study. He is also the primary person doing the studying.
Dr. Hunt is privy to a great many secrets. At the moment his biggest secret is that he intentionally gave incorrect coordinates to Team 1 for this event, so that he could collect samples before the gate is destroyed. You see, because the "goo", or D-cells (for Demon cells) as Dr. Hunt has dubbed them become increasingly adapted and vicious, the government has shut down research and demanded that all subsequent gates be destroyed immediately. Dr. Hunt needs one more collection of samples for his unauthorized work to continue.
As so often happens, there were problems. Dr. Hunt himself became infected, and mutated into an enormous and very hungry monstrosity. When the violet flash reset time, he remembered what his experience had been, and found that it was incredibly satisfying. Consequently we don't really know what side Dr. Hunt is on anymore.
How can that be? This is the final episode, isn't it? Surprise! It's NOT! When this segment ends Dr. Hunt is en route to meet his boss, the founder of T.A.C.T., but his intent is not revealed to us. All we know is there are members of Team 1, including a possibly injured helicopter pilot still within the recognized danger zone. There are campers who came out just to shoot their guns. There are students having a bonfire, listening to loud music. There are other students planning a get-together at the campground. And there is a town full of residents without a clue, who have been told there has been a chemical spill outside of town, so the access to the campground is closed.
All these people are in danger from several possible sources. First, the D-cells have evolved to a state where they have probably exceeded T.A.C.T.'s ability to contain them. Second, and considerably more fearsome, is that the plan now is to nuke the mountain unless Dr. Hunt and his allies can shut down this gate using less deadly means. Perhaps the greatest danger to them is this: we and they must all wait until "Invasion Event #6" is available, before we can find out what happens next!
Up to this point the "Darkness and Daemons" story has become increasingly fascinating. We can only hope it will continue to do so through Event #6, right on through how ever many events it finally takes to conclude this tale. I am hopelessly engaged in the story, and will be actively seeking the successive episodes. I recommend you do the same. Obtain the first five events -- available separately or in a single collection -- and prepare yourself for the upcoming events. This story has become too intense to not follow. I urge you to get started and anxiously await, with me, the continuation of "Darkness and Daemons". It, like the D-cells, has evolved into a great story.
