After Nikki Turner read The Coldest Winter Ever by Sistah Souljah she was dismayed that there weren't other books like it. "I wanted to write the kinds of books I wanted to read," said the bestselling author, whose 2002 debut novel, A Hustler's Wife, would go on to sell more than a few 100,000 copies. While Nikki Turner's first two novels were published by a small publishing house in the Midwest, in 2004 she signed a 2-book deal with One World, an imprint of Ballantine Books, which is part of The Random House Publishing Group. After publishing the first book under that deal, The Glamorous Life in 2005 as well as a short story collection edited by Nikki, Street Chronicles: Tales from da Hood, One World quickly signed Nikki up for three more Nikki Turner Original novels and negotiated a deal with her for her own book line, Nikki Turner Presents. "I want to give new authors the same kind of opportunity I was given," said Nikki. "I want to produce authors who will be household names."
Ridiculously good! a bit violent, dialogue is in ebonics, awesome writing with enjoyable chemistry from the whole cast..way too short but at least there's book#2..
This story was just ok to me...but some of it peaked my interest...I'm curious to see what will happen with Unique & Kennard...So i will read the next book...hoping it's better than the first...The way it ended definitely left me wanting to know more...
I have always loved Nikki Turner's books and always wanted to know more about Unique and when would she finally get her own story. Finally, her time has come!! Since we last heard from Unique, she has moved to the Big Apple and made some pretty big changes in her life. She has a new boo, Kennard a boxing promoter, who knows nothing about her past ---and Unique aims to keep it that way! But someone from her past has a different idea and will stop at nothing to make Unique pay for what she did to him.
This short story was AMAZING and I can't wait to see if and how my girl bounces back in part 2!!! Way to go Ms Turner!!
A quick read but just barely ok for me. If you like hood lit this might be your cup of tea. Since I'm not a hood lit fan I won't judge this book too harshly.
This story is about a women named Unique and how she now has a a loving man in her life named Kennard and how she wants a different life with him than what had in the past.
Unique has a lot of secrets from her past, and her past is now coming face to face with her present. A guy named Fat Tee goes on a hunt looking for Unique only to find her and black mail her.
Kennard loves Unique and thinks the world of her which is why their pasts haven't been talked about.
I enjoyed reading the beginning of this series and I plan to finish reading the rest of the Unique series.
My only questions are: Will Kennard finally learn about Unique's past? What does Fat Tee really want with Unique? The baby the Unique is carrying is it really Kennard's or from the rape by Fat Tee?
I choose this rating because the book had the right amount of suspense to keep you on he end of your seat. I like the fact that she was street smart but made the wrong move to get the money. I would recommend to everyone. .I look forward to reading part two and much more.
I enjoyed everything about this book. I would recommend it to everyone I know. I look forward to part two.
It's my first time reading a book from the urban fiction genre and I don't think it will be my last time. It was entertaining and I liked Unique's character. I do have an issue with the language used, it was a bit too vulgar for me. I also know it's a novella, it's supposed to be short but it didn't feel like a complete story.
Yes I was well aware this was a short story. ( mini series, novella, or whatever you like to call it). This is not the best work of Nikki Turner. Minor grammatical errors flowed through the book at times. The story line was OK, and held my attention. For Unique karma came back to give what she dished out years earlier. The ending did go out with a POW!! With that said I must read the next book to find out what happens.(All 3 books could have been rolled in one in my opinion) So if you looking for a short read here you go.
This was more of a short story! Would have been better if it was a novel and you were able to connect or form a bond with the characters. Very straight to the point but I have to read part two... Curious! ;)
Looking forward to reading the next installment tonsee what happens between Unique and Kennard. It stopped abruptly and I want to know what happens! Other that that it was ok. A quick read, which was the intention. Kept my interest, but at the same time I may have skipped over a paragraph here and there.
