Truly, madly...deadly

Detective Tom Hanson has a string of grotesquely mutilated bodies on his hands and no answers-aside from the fact that the victims were members of an underground sex club catering to singular erotic tastes.

Tastes the long, lean detective has sampled himself in the arms of his former lover, a fiery redhead who offered the most erotic, irresistible sex he'd ever encountered. Until the night she'd begged for the one thing he couldn't give, and he lost her forever.

Gina Larsen is the only one who can guide Hanson through the fringe world of dark fantasy and desire that lies hidden deep beneath the Bible Belt. Lured into her lair by a quest for justice, Hanson discovers his hunger for Gina has only grown stronger and deeper...beyond the edge of control. Soon he's shedding his last inhibitions in the search for answers, but the more she draws him into her erotic web, the less he can distinguish between passion and duty, pleasure and pain...good and evil.

Kate Kinsey

Kate Kinsey is a saucy wench with a highly sophisticated brain that sometimes still gets obsessed trying to remember all the words to the Gilligan's Island theme song.

She's a truly fabulous person who just can't figure out why she's not rich and famous yet, or why the universe refuses to admit that she is indeed the center of it.

She currently lives in Tennessee with a cat who is in the Witness Protection Program — at least, that's his story and he's sticking to it. He has a fetish for leather shoes and bare ankles, and an obsession with squirrels.

Kate has been collared to her Sir for more than fourteen years. She has been very involved in her local community since she first stepped off the vanilla cliffs and dove into the kinky world of BDSM.

When she's not tied to a cross in a dungeon somewhere, she loves to read as well as write. She's also a painter and a film buff.

Hard as it may be to believe, Kate was raised Southern Baptist, but is recovering.

***5 "SMUTS-PENSEFUL" STARS***

QUESTION:

*Would you like a little BDSM to go along with one wicked serial killer story-line ?

* Would you like to read a story where the women are the more Dominate characters ?

*Would you like to read a book that depicts the BDSM lifestyle in a believable manner? ( at least it seemed realistic to me)

* Would you like to read sex scenes that cause your jaw to hit the floor and your panties to melt away?(check updates below)

*Would you like to read a book with likable characters? (Loved Griggs)

*Would you like to read a book that is not predictable? (AT ALL)

*Would you like to read a book with a “HOLY SHIT! I did not see that coming" type of ending?

... if have answered "YES" to 3 or more of these questions, then you must read this book ASAP . If you have answered "NO" to 3 or more of these questions, I say to you, open your damn mind as you are surely missing out....then read the damn book as well.

I must say, I've never read another book quite like Red, but I certainly hope to in the near future. Kate Kinsey offered her readers a little bit of everything.. Suspense, sex, humor to lighten the mood, along with numerous other details that make this book entertaining .

Now, the only complaint I do have is how the characters were introduced in the beginning of the book - I found the execution to be a tad bit chaotic (there is a purpose behind it). Even though I caught myself scratching my head in confusion, the enjoyment I experienced from all their naughty rendezvous outweighed my complaint.

Kudos to you Mrs. Kinsey on a job well done and for helping me select my new ringtone :-). You get this nutter's seal of approval ( not that it amounts to anything ) Friends and fellow bookworms, you know you want to give this book a try. I can already hear you saying..

This was RED hot and it's a truly beautiful cover!

Detectives Hanson and Griggs have a serial killer on their hands and soon realise that the one thing that connects the victims is the BDSM lifestyle. Hanson turns to his former partner and lover, Gina, for advice as she is heavily involved in the lifestyle. She’d been publicly outed as a dominatrix a few years ago and humiliated and fired by the self-righteous chief of police, Daubs. She’s actually a switch and is now making money as a professional Dominatrix and her relationship with Hanson had ended when he realised that her masochistic kink ran too deep for his tastes and he couldn’t give her what she wanted although he’s never been able to replace her.

This is not some sugar-coated hearts and flowers BDSM romance. This is harsh, gritty, brutal, real. It was really quite mesmerising and I couldn’t put it down. It wasn’t exactly what I thought it was going to be – a Cherise Sinclair style BDSM romantic suspense. It’s much more thriller than romance and while there are some BDSM scenes, they’re actually few and far between. It’s a very realistic look at the Lifestyle without romanticising it. It’s there in brutal reality, Lifestylers mostly trying to keep their world private from the majority vanilla population.

It’s well written, the serial killer storyline is beautifully constructed to keep you guessing and the ending is a real shocker, let me tell you. I don’t want to give anything away about the plot but the last chapter had me agape.

The characters are well developed and come vividly to life off the pages – I really felt that I’d got to know them well and even Griggs, the annoying and brash partner, wormed his way into my affections. The romance between Hanson and Gina really does take a back burner to the suspense plot but when they finally get back together after years apart and have real angry sex, it’s RED hot!! Not a lot of page time is given to the romance but you can definitely feel the growing attachment between them.

As for content, there are a few BDSM style scenes and one scene that verges on non-con but it pays to remember that she goads him into it because it’s what she wants. It’s difficult to classify – I wouldn’t really put it in the erotic category as there’s really not that much sex. It’s definitely a thriller – it just happens to take place within the BDSM world. I think if you were to draw a line between Karen Rose and Tiffany Reisz, Kate Kinsey’s Red would sit somewhere in the middle. Not some rose-tinted romance but definitely worth reading – I can highly recommend it. There are also quite a lot of ‘safe, sane, consensual’ messages written into the plot, almost as a cautionary tale to prospective kinksters.

So, if my review and the synopsis appeals to you, please buy this book so that Kate Kinsey doesn’t eat her cat. I like cats.

4 stars... Dark, Suspenseful, Bold, and Erotic

Thou art to me a delicious torment. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Red is a dark erotic thriller. It reminds me of the neo noir movie “Se7en” and the overtly sexual “Basic Instinct.” Clever red herrings and plot twists build anticipation. The characters and their problems feel realistic. This is a book that took me on a BDSM tour as it exists in the United States’ Bible Belt. This dark, defiant, sexual and graphically-violent suspense is to be enjoyed for fans of thrillers!

Some people call it the Lifestyle, or the Leather Lifestyle, just to differentiate it from the swingers who also call what they do ‘the Lifestyle.’ Some people just call it kink, or fetish, or WIITWD.”

“WI—What the hell does that stand for?”

“What It Is That We Do.” Gina laughed, then sobered.

“Jesus, I can’t get over these pictures. So much blood….”

Detective Tom Hanson and his partner, John Griggs, are investigating a series of brutal murders. One of the victims, a formerly prestigious member of the community, was the chief of police’s friend. Political and media pressure require a speedy apprehension as the body count rises.

The BDSM lifestyle is the link between the victims. Detective Hanson contacts his old lover, Gina Larsen. She had needs he refused to satisfy and seeing her again awakens dormant feelings. Gina has personal experience with the darker edge of erotic fantasy. As a dominatrix and a former police detective, she can provide valuable insight needed to catch the killer before he strikes again.
Looking at her made it hard to think, hard to breathe. The desire to draw her close and bury his face in her hair rushed over him.

“I didn’t know what else to do—“

“You were afraid they’d think you were some kind of freak. Just like me.”

Detective Hanson encounters a mass of emotional turmoil combined with stress from outside forces. He’s a forty-two year old detective, who is honest and experienced. He’s an ordinary kind of guy, lacking the overused policeman characteristics. Hanson feels realistic, along with the secondary characters. His relationship with Gina provides the backstory needed for the tie-in with the victims and the BDSM community.

The conflicts and behaviors achieve a sincerity I wasn’t expecting. The sadomasochism theme smoothly reveals itself in connection with the characters and their situation. We learn about the submissive who didn’t report her rape. There’s the loving, monogamous couple who kept their sexual activities hidden from family and friends. There's also the dominant that cheats on his wife to meet his needs. Then, there’s the unsympathetic and political-minded police chief whose main concern is image instead of justice. Every character has texture and shading. A myriad of attitudes are postured. The light (”I love you, you big old pervert”), darker (Please, please…Hit me) and the extreme sides (Thwap, thwap, thwap! “Pathetic bastard, making me…wait…for…you”) of BDSM are represented in flattering and unflattering light.

”Now I understand why some guys pay you to spank them.” Griggs snickered. “If it means they get to look at you dressed like this.”

Gina brought out a dog collar and buckled it around Griggs’s throat.

“Hey,” he said, fingering the collar as she snapped a leash to it. “Does this mean I’m your bitch?”

Hanson’s partner, Griggs, offsets the dark and, sometimes, disturbing events with his humorous dialogue. Even though Griggs has a seemingly narrow-minded attitude, the author adds dimension to his character making him likeable. Of all the characters, his detective skills come as across as the strongest. Griggs observes and applies logic. Given the same information, I believe he could have solved the case as easily as Hanson could.

Red is well-written and engrossing. It provides a fascinating tale encompassing cultural values, consensual conduct, victimization, and mindset. The storytelling is honest. The tension of the main plot is steady from beginning to end. Hope is a constant string as we pull for Hanson and company to catch the killer. The tense climax keeps us on the edge of our seat until all is dramatically revealed.

Yes, the murders are graphic. How graphic? If you’ve ever seen the movie “Se7en” you’ll know what I mean. There is one murder scene that had me thinking the killer should have left scented evergreen trees hanging from the ceiling.

The BDSM scenarios include rough role-playing and one scene that pushes play to the edge without going over. The victims and consensual participants are obvious. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy a thought-provoking subject embedded in a suspenseful, well-told story; in this case, a dark erotic thriller.

My unsquimish verdict: Recommended Read

On a side note : Beware the Pekinese!

Ooops. I need some time to digest this... Okay, now that I got my wind back I need to think of how to review this.

This is NOT a romance, nor erotica. It's important to note this!

I think one of the problems this superb little thriller has, is that too many people believe it is some variation of Fifty Shades of Grey. No, it is not! This is something far different.

The closest I can describe this is a written version of such dark thrillers as Se7en and 8mm. It is extremely well-written, very smooth, and a major mind-fuckery. It portrays the scene in which it takes place quite honestly, often with some tongue-in-cheek humour (Gor and judgement thereof...), it has a gritty, brilliant prose, it's tight as hell and had me on the edge of my seat throughout. I couldn't stop reading, I had to know what happened.

The ending is a major mind-fuck, and unlike a lot of readers who apparently thought they would be getting some pat erotic romance, this ending was dark enough to satisfy the actual genre this book belongs into in my opinion.

In spite of all this those among the readers who want a bit of romance and also a HEA of sorts do get it. Of sorts.

Recommended to everyone who likes dark thrillers!

Detective Tom Hanson and his partner have a string of grisly murders to solve and not much in the way of leads. Until, that is, Detective Hanson is able to determine that the victims were players in the local BDSM scene. Needing some guidance and inside knowledge of the scene, he turns to his former partner and lover, Gina, now a professional dominatrix after being forced from her job as a cop once her extracurricular activities were discovered in a lurid sex scandal. They have a tense history, some unfinished personal business and a killer to catch....

To be very honest, this story didn't do a whole lot for me. I was sort of apathetic about everything but the last third of the book. For me, it took far too long to get the two main characters face to face for the first time in the story. The case set up was lengthy and involved jumping between way too many characters, for my liking, right off the bat. Frankly, rather it was my mood or the writing, I was bored for a good portion of this book. The last third of the book, however, when the story began to come together, made this worth reading. There were some fairly good twists and turns, and, in my opinion, a bit of an unexpected ending.

Fair warning, there is a scene in this book that many will say is non-con. For my part, because of the way it was written, I wasn't overly bothered by it. But, I imagine some will be.

3 Stars!

The author of 'Red' promises us a story that is well written, a story that doesn't just have kinky sex but an actual plot, and a story written by someone who knows what she's talking about when it comes to the kinky world of BDSM. I have to say, she delivered. This book is an erotic thriller. There's not a lot of romance, but an incredible murder mystery divulging into the world of BDSM that will leave you guessing until the very end and then leave you shocked. Talk about twists you won't see coming.

The author is great at building up tension and anticipation in her writing. The story itself is dark, complex, and violent, but she is able to throw in humor relief, mainly through Hanson's partner, Griggs, that keeps it on the edge of becoming too dark. I just had to mention Griggs because I like him :)

So who my favorite character? Hard to say. Gina is a strong female character and isn't afraid of what she wants. She is sexy and confident. Hanson is pretty much the opposite of Gina. It's interesting how their characters come together so well, but they do. I love how the author was able to portray her characters as real people with real lives, worries, and desires. She was able to use them to bring dimension to the story and give it purpose. All of the characters are believable.

As for the erotica/BDSM aspect – This is not erotic romance. If you open this book looking for that, you'll be disappointed. However, keep reading. The BDSM is successfully woven into the storyline rather than just being a side story as it is in so many other erotica books, and rather than just throw us into the world of BDSM assuming we know everything about it, the author gives us a roadmap to guide us in the form of Detective Hanson. He knows next to nothing about BDSM, and as things are explained to him, they are also explained to the reader.

Here are my only two grievances with the book: One, the first few chapters seemed a bit muddled to me. You were kind of thrown into the middle of things, and it was a bit hard to follow. However, it quickly came together nicely into create a wonderful story. Second, the quotes at the beginning of each and every chapter I found unnecessary and annoying and would have rather had them not there. Because of these two things I have been hovering between 4 and 5 stars. However, I ultimately decided that my small qualms weren't enough to knock off a star. Overall this story was sexual, violent, suspenseful, and complex. Read it.

This novel starts with a crime and how Hanson and his partner Griggs (who I never liked at the beginning but then he just grew on me... I truly loved his wit ;)) trying to understand why such a respectable citizen Mr. Roger is caught in such a gruesome crime...

Crimes take place and the only link is one EMBLEM ... enters Gina. She is an ex cop why??? You need to read the book.

But she is an unofficial consultant for Hanson and Griggs and thus enters the world of BDSM :D

There are so many characters who are involved in here... do they know eachother? YES! Random? Maybe!

Roger's Sincerity and love towards his people:

This review is posted on Way Too Hot Books.

The desire had always been there.
A yearning for dark, shadowed things that could not be spoken of,
could hardly be put into words even if she dared...

Dark, gripping, edgy, raw, scary & way too hot.

This was something different. Sometimes you just know right at the beginning that you're gonna like the book and this was that kind of book for me and do I even have to mention the intriguing cover? I read the first couple of pages and I was immediately seduced by the provocative, at times poetic voice of the author. Her amazing writing style is one of the most important reasons why you should read this.

She wanted to offer up her body and mind
and soul
in devotion and pain and suffering so sweet
it denied all attempts to define, describe, quantify.
She learned what others called it.
Sadomasochism.
But it was inadequate, not the right word at all.
Perversion was worse in its cruelty, its judgement.
But nothing could stop the want.

First thing you need to be aware of is that this is not a BDSM romance book. There is romance in it, but it's more of a background story and it's not your conventional type of romance. As the blurb above states, this is a Bdsm thriller, and the main focus is on the question: who did it??? The story is told from various points of views, but the two most important ones are from detective Tom Hanson and his ex-lover Gina Larson who is also ex-cop turned dominatrix. The series of brutal murders in the secret Bdsm "society" brings them back together which soon enough turns to the biggest and one of the most gruesome cases of their life.

The Bdsm lifestyle presents an important aspect of the story regarding both the case and the sex part. There were a couple of sex scenes, not too much, and those were, just like the bloody murders, pretty explicit and hands down dirty. Every chapter of the book begins with a quote by some of the famous authors and philosophers out there (W. Shakespeare, W. Faulkner, Nietzsche, ...) what I really liked. The quotes were deep and provocative and they were mostly about pain mixed with pleasure and they made me think that some of these authors were pretty kinky themselves, lol.

"I'm your spaniel; and, Demetrius,
The more you beat me, I will fawn on you:
Use me but as your spaniel, spurn me, strike me,neglect me, lose me;
only give me leave,
Unworthy as I am, to follow you.
What worse place can I beg in your love,
And yet a place of high respect with me,
-Than to be used as you use your dog.

By W.S.,"A Midsummer Night's Dream"

The only flaw for me was that I guessed quite early in the story who was "the bad man", even though the story did got me second guessing a couple of times, and I was a bit frustrated because the characters seemed oblivious to the things that were right in front of them.

And the ending? Omg, I frigging loved it! I would have given 10 stars just for that awesome ending, that's all I'm going to say.

The message of this book: A strong and confident woman can be the deadliest weapon of them all if she chooses it.

So, if you want something unique, maybe a well-written, dirty & gripping Bdsm mind-fuck- this is it!

Well done Kate Kinsey!

If you want an erotic thriller with slight hints of romance and a HUGE helping of some honest-to-goodness BDSM, then look no further- the buck stops here.

I would even go as far as 4½♥'s on this book. Overall, the book was well written, complex and layered, very well researched, portrays the 'lifestyle' with brutal honesty, and manages to keep (this) reader guessing along the way. The main reservation I have about awarding a full 5 stars to this would be the beginning 20% of the book. There are a large number of characters we get to crawl inside the mind of, and the beginning was somewhat choppy for me and confusing at times until I became familiar and comfortable with all the primary characters.

It is a darker book, overall, violent and bloody. Everything in the book is treated with unapologetic honesty. From the murders to Doms and Subs and everything in between. There is no sugar coating, there is little romance, and the real world is rarely as pretty as TV and movies would have you believe. I guess that 'true to life' honesty is something that really grabbed me. Just like life - this book is not all sculpted abs, roses, and hearts. It contains 'real' (fictional but believable characters) people.

A word on the characters... there were several I didn't think I was going to end up liking. I'd say most of them, in fact, I really didn't think I was going to end up caring about. But by the end, I found something in almost all of them that grabbed me somehow. For Griggs, it's absolutely his love of cats. That was among my favorite parts of the book; silly- I know. Griggs has a foot-in-mouth filter missing that needs to be there, but his highly inappropriate comments did help lighten the mood several times. Gina was finally taking life by the horns and living it on her terms. I loved that. Hanson finally put on his big boy pants and accepted himself- what he really wanted and needed and allowed himself to have it. Cherry... I was really hoping for a different resolution that the uncertainty we are left with regarding her, but I was able to at least not only think of her as a victim.

I've mentioned it already, but I think I really need to specifically address... this is not a romance. There is kink, and it is portrayed extraordinarily well. This author obviously knows the scene, knows exactly what she is talking about, and I think it's refreshing to see BDSM so well represented in this book. It explains everything well for those unfamiliar to those in the lifestyle, but doesn't make it trite for those that already are familiar with the terms. Don't read this expecting romance, but don't let that lull you into a false sense of security. This book will try to push your sexual limits, desires, and fantasies. It will make you want to cry out, "No! No!" even when you are thinking, "Yes! Yes"... just don't forget your safeword: Red.

I want to thank Kate Kinsey, Netgalley, and the Shut Up and Read review program for allowing me to read and review this title for free. I have not received any compensation for my review.

Rating: C+ ... Heat: Sizzling

I have to say, I went into this thinking it was going to have a stronger element of romance than it ended up having. I had expectations of an erotic BDSM romance with a thrilling murder mystery weaved throughout… But what I read was a thrilling murder mystery set in the BDSM community with hints of the erotic and brief moments of romance. A slight distinction, but important nonetheless.

Expectations set aside, I found myself engrossed by and engaged in this BDSM thriller. Red is a film noir (book noir?) set in the bible belt that explores the darker, seedier side to the kink lifestyle. And Miz Kinsey doesn’t hold back on anything. Anything. There are parts I can only describe as… morbidly fascinating. Fascinatingly morbid. Which I think fits perfectly for a story that follows a detective as he struggles to catch a serial killer with a proclivity for mutilation.

Said Detective, and primary point of view, is Tom Hanson. Detective Hanson is still reeling from the loss of his ex-partner and ex-lover, Gina Larson. Gina was forced to quit the force after being outted as a Dominatrix and then harassed by her co-workers. Hanson has guilt and unresolved feelings when it comes to Gina—things he didn’t do, things he didn’t say. When he realizes he’s going to need her help and insight into the BDSM community, well, it’s not going to be easy. Especially since Hanson has yet to accept his own dark tendencies.

Hanson is currently partnered with Griggs, a man I can only think to describe as utterly un-PC and clearly missing a filter from his brain to his mouth. He is an interesting counterpoint to Hanson. And the things he says, well, you’re often left thinking: ‘No. Just no.’ and ‘OMG, man, someone needs to muzzle you!’  Still, he does make you laugh… and I think he means well. But I couldn’t help being overjoyed when Gina finally put a leash and collar on him.

My biggest complaint comes at the end of the novel. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I will only say that something Gina does, and Hanson discovers… it’s a HUGE something… I don’t feel like it was handled properly or resolved in any way. It was a real WTF moment and Hanson is all, ‘So, you did this.’ and Gina is all, ‘Yeah, I did.’ It needed to be expanded on and discussed and dealt with. Not swept under the rug.

All in all, I really did enjoy Red quite a lot. I don’t think I ever set it down for any long period of time. The mystery and the different viewpoints and each victim’s stories really kept the story rolling and the pace going. The resolution was terrific and done very well. Kept me guessing throughout.

Soon he’s shedding his last inhibitions in the search for answers, but the more she draws him into her erotic web, the less he can distinguish between passion and duty, pleasure and pain…good and evil."

I started writing this way before "Fifty Shades of Grey" became the hot topic in the book clubs, the elevator, the break room and wherever else you find two or more women hanging around these days. You can read my review of that book elsewhere. I only mention it to say that if you liked FSoG, you might like this one. You might also be appalled and offended. But if you were bored out of your mind by FSoG — or it made you giggle uncontrollably — RED is the book for you.

As the author, I make you three promises:

1) RED is well written. Okay, it may not be Faulkner or Hemingway, but it will not make a college graduate groan, wince or throw up.

2) RED doesn't just have kinky sex; it actually has a plot. A great big steamy thrill-ride of a plot, as a matter of fact.

3) RED was written by someone who knows what she's talking about when it comes to the kinky world of BDSM.

4) No one in this book bites their lip until you want to smack them.

(I know I said three promises. That last one was just a bonus.)

I hope that you'll give RED a read, and that you enjoy it. Let me know what you think!

The true man wants two things: danger and play, for that reason he wants woman, as the most dangerous plaything. - Friedrich Nietzche

Hanson and Griggs investigate a series of grisly murders involving individuals involved in the BDSM lifestyle. Hanson was originally partnered with Gina Larsen. They were partners for seven years and lovers for three. The relationship died a slow death, when he was unable to meet her needs to be dominated. When Gina left the force, it was discovered that she was a professional dominatrix. Hanson realises that he needs Gina's help in order to investigate this case, that may involve the BDSM scene.

This is not a romantic story, it's raw and brutal and edgy. The sex scenes are explicity described, which I think tries to show the perverse nature of the crimes. You will not find a tender moment between the two main characters. Gina likes hard, mean and viscious sex, which at times I found a little disturbing. All that said I quite enjoyed the criminal investigation side to the story, which had me guessing until the end.

All in all not a bad little erotic thriller - 3 solid stars.

A serial killer who mutilates people in the BDSM lifestyle? How will this story end up playing out? Books using BDSM as part of the reason for a killer are iffy. Will they be BDSM hostile or not? In this case, Ms. Kinsey is quite the responsible author and this is a BDSM friendly book.

The main characters all seem to be rather screwed up. Detective Tom Hanson is a kinkster in denial. His complete dismissal and lack of support for his partner and former lover, Gina, was disappointing. This is from a kinster's perspective. What is also rather frightening is the way kinksters are persecuted in this book. This book takes place in the deep South. As someone who is not out to the community as a kinkster, I can fully appreciate discretion for fear of losing my job. Reading it in a contemporary romantic suspense and seeing the ramifications of a kinky lifestyle, I admit to being a bit freaked out and grateful I live "up North". The way Gina lost her job and how people treats her was completely abhorrent. If there is one thing Ms. Kinsey definitely did in this book, it was to show how terrible the Vanilla world can be towards those who are not "mainstream". It is almost an overkill yet I wonder if perhaps it's an accurate reflection which I'm thankfully not subject to.

The character building in this story is abrasive. Abrasive as in, none of the main characters are people I'd admire. Tom, Gina and Griggs are all judgmental in their own way. Tom is a disappointment. Gina is probably the least irritating as she is true to herself. Still, she frustrates the reader because she plays games with Tom. She could just lay out it straight and direct for Tom. Instead, it felt as if Tom keeps playing the guessing game with Gina and failing big time. Griggs, Tom's current parter is a pig. I can't stand him. Yet about half way through the book, one can tell Griggs is more than just a horn dog. He does possess a brain and he is vested in justice. He's just an asshat with no filter between brain and mouth.

The bits of BDSM lifestyle show in this story is hot. It's mostly glossed over. For those in the lifestyle or along the fringes it probably makes more sense than those who are new to BDSM. Since I don't expect the author to teach a BDSM 101 class, I appreciated this method. What I did find interesting was the graphic descriptions of mutilation by the serial killer.

The serial killer and the reason behind his madness is no surprise by the time all is revealed. Ms. Kinsey does a good job of leaving bread crumbs for the reader to follow and figure out who killed and why. This romantic suspense book is recommended to kinky readers who enjoy a good "who done it" story.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5!

OH WOW! This is one disturbing book and it is AWESOME! Red is one series of twists and turns that will keep you reeling. Just when you think you have it all figured out, you get thrown another curve ball!

When I started this I was expecting a BDSM story with a little murder thrown in. What I got instead was a very compelling murder mystery in the BDSM world. It was FREAKIN' FANTASTIC!

The first few chapters were a little difficult to get through as they were all about different people. It was difficult for me to figure out what the connection was. I stuck with it and was rewarded with a dark, twisted, compelling story. After the connection between all the people was made, I was sucked into a world that thrives on the basic principle of SAFE, SANE and CONSENUAL but had been shattered by a sick psychopath.

Gina guides Detective Hanson through her world in order to find the killer and along the way he found a side of himself he didn’t know existed, or at least denied. Their attraction for each other created complications for the case and their lives.
This book was definitely not what I expected when I picked up. It was much BETTER and gave me chills.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This is a fantastic read in every aspect - for fans of BDSM to murder mystery fans, this book just rocks.

Character development is strong - the characters are believable, and you will love and hate the ones the author intends. None are "stock" characters - even the corrupt police chief has some twists that are unexpected - but all are believable and well-defined.

It's an intelligent novel for the intelligent reader - the author's longtime experience in the BDSM "lifestyle" serves to give credence to the plot. Consistency with the reality of BDSM contacts, clubs and actions is critical to the outcome not requiring suspension of disbelief, and the author delivers strongly.

All in all, one of the very best murder mysteries I've ever enjoyed - I hope to hear much more from Kate Kinsey - she is quite a talent.

If you're a fan of dark books that don't shy away from anything, you'll love this book. While it could kinda/sorta be classified as a romance, don't go into it looking for a traditional one. Red is a BDSM thriller and if you aren't one for BDSM or graphic violence, do the author a favor and read another book.

With that being said, it's an outstanding book. There is a serial killer murdering people in the BDSM community. Two detectives, Hanson and Griggs, have to fight like hell to catch the bad guy before more bodies pile up. Then there is Gina, Hanson's former partner and lover, who is asked to help find the perp. Gina lost her job as a detective after a very public scandal. Hanson didn't exactly go out of his way to stand up for her, so why should she go out of her way to help him now?

This starts off with a very naughty bang, but I wouldn't classify Red as all-out erotica. It's there, but it's not what one might expect. The BDSM is written very accurately by an author who knows what she's talking about. The mystery is excellent. While I admit to figuring out who the bad guy was early on, I wasn't prepared for a twist at the end or the reasons behind it.

I do have to point something out and it needs to be pointed out strongly - there is a bit of on-page sexual violence in this book that would be considered major triggers for victims. Keep that in mind before picking up this book.

Overall, a great mystery that leans a lot on the darker side. The characters are written well and you will be kept guessing until the end. I had one niggle with the story and it's listed (as a somewhat spoiler) in my full review. Otherwise, an outstanding book. I will definitely be reading more by this author.

My thanks to Kazza K, my blog partner, for pointing me in the right direction with this book.

Should it matter to an employer what a person does in their private time? In my opinion, NO, it shouldn’t matter, but sadly, it often does. RED is a spine-tingling, BDSM thriller that will leave you panting for more… More of the story, more answers and more of the dangerously hot sex!

As the only female detective on the force, Gina Larsen has to watch her step. Gina has dark desires that she struggles to suppress and the last thing she needs is the townspeople or men in the department catching wind of her kinky and erotic tastes.
There is one man in the department who knows and has kept her secret, Detective Tom Hanson, he is well aware of her “freak in the sheets” dark-side. Although it has been years since he has tasted her specific brand of loving, the erotic sexual encounters will be forever imprinted on his soul, but that ship has long since sailed for Gina and Tom.

When Gina’s private liaisons are revealed to the public, she is forced to leave her position as a police officer. When a crazed killer begins murdering members of an underground sex club, she just might hold the key in the knowledge she possesses. Detective turned professional Dominatrix, Gina has insight into the enigmatic world of the BDSM culture that the department needs. Who better to coax her into helping the department that turned their back on her than the very sexy and closet kinky, Detective Tom Hanson?

RED is darkly erotic. Author Kate Kinsey brings this naughty psychological thriller to life weaving a seductive web that is sure to trap you from the very first page.

Red is a book that I have no inclination to ever open or reread again. I finished the novel within 24 hours - it is without question gripping and gritty. Simultaneously it is brutally harsh and unforgiving.

This is a darkly themed detective novel with damaged individuals and a backdrop of a BDSM community, from which several members are victims of a vicious murder. The serial killer claims male and female victims both young and old.

Detectives Hanson and Griggs work together to unmask the killer. They seek guidance from a former colleague (and ex-lover of Hanson's) Gina Larson aka Lady Gee, who can help them to navigate through some of the complexities of the less than familiar local BDSM community.

Throughout the story Hanson contemplates his resurfacing emotions for Gina, and Griggs makes wise cracking observations about colleagues, situations past and present that are both incisive and mind bogglingly non politically correct. Indeed, his contribution was just about the only lightness in the book, which says it all really.

The writing is brilliant (most definitely 4 or 5 stars). The thing is if I was rating this for personal reading enjoyment it would be barely reaching 3 stars. So I have averaged it out to a 4 star review...

Red is not a romance. It is not an erotic thriller. It is a mystery filled with stark portrayals of horrific murder and the more seedy underbelly of life as lived by a group of people who feel marginalized and misunderstood even as they present an educated and successful persona to the world at large. I found the lack of acceptance for those choosing an alternative lifestyle both depressing and convincing. This is certainly not a feel good novel. All the same it is a visceral, challenging and thoughtful study.

Added to the depth and interest of the book were literary comments around themes of submission, pain and pleasure that prefaced each chapter. Red is a dark well crafted thriller shot through with macabre realism. Expect nothing more and you will not be disappointed.

Well, the way I read this book says it all really - I was in the middle of three other books, was just going to read a couple of pages to see what it was like... And 4 hours later, I had spent my entire Saturday evening reading this page-turner!

It's important for me to mention here that I'm normally not a very big crime/thriller fan, in fact, I usually lose interest quickly and couldn't care less who-dunnit...

But Kinsey has managed something I find quite impressive - to write a page-turning thriller which is both informative and sexy AND has characters with more dimensions than 1!

In reality, the murder-solving plot is nothing particular unique, it's the naughty peek into the BDSM world that makes this book. But unlike the (very) few "sexy" novels I've (tried to) read, this book made sure that there was a real story behind the naughty scenes and a plot that actually propelled the story.

I really liked both Gina and Hanson and particularly Hanson's journey of discovery is fascinating to follow sort of from within. I will say though, that it was perhaps not the most surprising journey, but it was a good look into the struggle I imagine many newcomers to BDSM have.
And I think that is exactly what is the best element about this book: Kinsey manages to show us the various stages the people of the BDSM world find themselves in: the newcomer, the experienced and everyone in-between. How some feel completely at peace with who they are, but still find it necessary to hide from the "rest" of the world and how some, despite years of experimentation, still struggle with feelings of being "freaks" and "perverts".

All in all, a really good read! I read in an interview that Kinsey is planning a sequel which I will definitely be picking up :)

Also, I LOVED Griggs! ;)

For full disclosure, I received this book from the author through the Read It & Reap review programme in return for an honest review.

Wow. Not what I expected.

Three half-naked women were discussing their kid's day care problems.

'These people are so...' Hanson began.

'Normal?' Gina finished.
....

'Some of them should keep their clothes on,' Griggs muttered. He glared when she jerked the leash. 'Seriously. Gee there are some damned unattractive people here.'

'You think only pretty people should have a good time?' She jerked the leash again. 'This is the real world, not a porn site. And in the kink world, it's about acceptance.'

That was the moment when I stopped, bookmarked both those pages and thought to myself. What a fabulous moment! It's the real world.

Dammit. I LOVE this story, loved the excerpts at the start of each chapter, loved the characters, loved the plot and the intrigue and the sheer 'ordinariness' of the scenes (if you get my meaning) loved the fact that people respected each other, cared for each other, looked out for each other and loved the fact that I had NO idea how it was going to end. And my word - WHAT an ending!

As I said. Fabulous.

To begin with, this doesn't seem like erotica to me at all. I found it labeled that way on NetGalley and Barnes&Noble when I looked up the link, but to me this is definitely not erotica. It does portray some graphic adult scenes, violence, language and such, but it's mainly a thriller about a serial killer targeting a BDSM community, so, you know, it's gonna give you some scene shots and stuff, so to speak. The adult scenes are very graphic and hot, and the BDSM bits aren't lighthearted though they are fewer, considerably fewer then erotica would call for. There's also an element of romance, but it's not the main focus, the crime mystery / thriller is. That being said, let's move on. :-)

To me, in these sort of books, the make or break element is mood, atmosphere. After reading the first chapter I wasn't sure what sort of mood I got for the story, but as Hanson and the crime part of the book began I was hooked and totally loving it. Tension thick enough to cut through, conflict all over the place, this was just off the chart awesome. The writing was awesome on all accounts, crime thriller, BDSM lifestyle, romantic arc, even the humor bits, each was written great and they combined really well together.

I laughed out loud more then a couple of times, I winced, I rolled my eyes, I was intrigued. To top off the greatness of the plot itself and how the story unfolded, there were these fabulous, fabulous quotes at every chapter's debut, and they were seriously awesome. I liked how where they were inserted gave me a different perspective on the quotes themselves, I mean not in the Marquis de Sade case, but in others like Shakespeare and etc, I'm not gonna spoil the surprise. The story itself had this element of constantly giving you another perspective on things. The BDSM community for instance, where it could have been all about the whips, chains and scenes, it was more about the people in the community and not as kinksters but as people. There were bits when one character or another would talk about the lifestyle that I found truly enlightening and touching, and I'm one of those people who love kinky reads.

This changing your perspective sort of effect was a constant in this book, because even the crime part of the story ended up in a surprising and I must say rather genius sort of way. I mean, being a total crime geek and loving those detective dramas, I tend to see through some crime plots like they'd be glass, but in this case, I totally didn't. I had some suspicions, and I was partly in the right direction, but not all the way. So the "nose" worked, somewhat, but totally not all the way. If you love reading crime mysteries, you'll know how awesome it is to be surprised by the ending. I was surprised, and I loved the sort of dark tone of it. I will obviously say nothing precise or spoilery, but I'm betting you'll like that ending.

The characters were really cool, again as the read went on I saw some of them through different perspectives as things evolved, Gina and Hanson in particular. The romantic arc was really cool, but then again I do have a sort of sadistic pleasure in reading about tortured characters. Less common to romantic arcs, they're not newly acquainted, they have history together and it was intense history to boot. They both changed since it ended, Hanson had a really intense chemistry with her and I loved how he wrapped his head around his own self and needs and came to terms (somewhat, lol) with it. They were both complex characters, Gina more then him I'll say, and I found her utterly fascinating. This is a rare occurrence yet again, I tend to love the male characters more in these sort of stories, but Gina just seduced me, completely and irrevocably. She had that power / vulnerability ambiguity about her, this air of strength that I just couldn't help but respond to. I can totally see why poor Hanson is so lost in her, I mean, it's crystal clear she's one of those amazingly interesting women. Rawr.

Griggs was a jerwad, intolerant and narrow minded and with no mind-to-mouth filter (which was oddly endearing), but he managed to make me laugh a lot despite being totally unpleasant by default because of the stuff he said and his attitude towards some things. This speaks a lot about the writing, again, it's a rare case that a character comes off as a jerkwad because of intolerance but somehow manages to be half-charming and fun as well, but Griggs did that. I was totally lost between wanting to smash his teeth in and wanting to just hug him for making me laugh, and here again we find the different perspectives theme that seems to run all through the book, in all sorts of directions.
That's just genius, if you ask me. There's this ambiguity of all things, and I mean all of them, that just appealed to me in a way I think few if any books did so far.

Curb appeal for this book, off the charts. Absolutely fabulous cover, really interesting blurb. Were I to flip through the pages (I always do that instead of checking the first page, by the way), I'd be totally sold, but I'd be without it as well, just on cover + blurb.

So all in all, this was a really good read, it was fun, scary, it made me think, it was sort of playful and dark at the same time, totally thrilling and it kept me guessing through and through. I definitely say give this a shot, I had a real good time reading it and it has re-read potential just because of this awesome changing your perspective sort of impact it has on you as a reader; I rarely do re-reads, I know some people love to re-read but I'm more of the new read adept myself, I mean there are SO many books out there waiting for me, once I've read one, no matter how much I liked it, it's somehow more tempting to seek the next thrill then to revisit the ones I've already discovered. I think this says a lot about me, lol.
Therefor, a story has to have a very special kind of something beyond plot certainly, I've got to be obsessed with a character or fall in love with what the book does to my mood to be eligible for re-read. This book is a latter case, I really loved what this read did to my mood, it was a lifesaver really because I was in a really dark place when I began reading it and I found myself back in balance after.
So there you go, a change of perspective is balm to the soul.

You can find my review in its entirety at Between the Bind.

Firstly, I'd like to say that I know *nothing* about the BDSM community. I am only privy to what I've read and documentaries I've watched. So I do not know how accurately the lifestyle is depicted in Red, but I did feel as though some scene's seemed very real...while others were very surreal. And that is how my thoughts of BDSM range as well - somethings I can imagine and others I could never.

Tom Hansen is a typical police officer, who stumbled upon the BDSM lifestyle thanks to his former partner-turned-lover Gina Larsen. After a terrible fallout between Hansen and Larsen over a very public uncovering of Larsen's sexual preferences, she leaves the force due to the constant abuse and lack of respect from her fellow officers. Worst of all is that Hansen never bothered to stand up for her, thinking too much of what his fellow officers would think and the possibility of being ostracized from his community. When forced to meet up again and involve Gina in the case, Tom is faced with his past and battles to move beyond it and maybe even allow his inner freak-flag to fly.

We are introduced to a multitude of characters in this story - the right-winged married couple, a young girl just learning about her sexuality after a lifetime of suppression, the dominant sadomasochistic sociopath, a cheating husband dominant in his sexual life while leashed by his wife, and that of two police officers finding the balance between sexuality and comfortability. Even the devoutly religious and sublimely selfish police chief all play a role in this developmentally unique novel.

Overall, I really enjoyed the premise of Red. I felt like it was gripping and honest - almost too much so. Definitely a gruesome story - with details that a non-thriller reader such as myself was a little disturbed by but each was completely necessary. I also loved Hanson's partner Griggs - lightening the mood with his inappropriate and overtly sexual banter.

While after reading this novel I appreciated it and was happy to've read it, the first few chapters were very difficult for me to get through. The first chapter was very uncomfortable for me...but as I pushed through I came to understand that these characters are just like you and me, no matter how vulgar and off-putting the opening lines were. I think this was Kinsey's intention, however it was off-putting enough to reduce my rating of this novel.

I am so happy to have Red in my Kindle library and am looking forward to adding it to my bookshelf as well. A definite must-read for anyone interested in BDSM and willing to open themselves to a unique story of love, loss, death, and discovery.

Review originally published on Brazen Reads.

Reviewer’s Warning: This book is in no way, shape or form a romance novel. It will not induce any lovey-dovey feelings. It’s a crime novel with kinky sex. Do not go in with expectations of true love for you will be dissappointed. Go in with expectations of a good murder investigation, and you will be right at home.

I want to take a few moments and talk about how beautiful the cover of this novel is. Just look at it. It’s erotic without being vulgar. Not a naked torso in sight. I wish more erotica publishers did covers like this one. The inside of the novel was beautifully designed as well, with the chapter number written in cursive and a quote on Dominance or submission at the beginning of each chapter.

The writing was very good as well. After realising that this wasn’t going to be a suspense romance but a mystery novel, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There is a balance between the investigation and Detective Hanson’s personal issues, the characters are fully fledged and the BDSM is presented realistically.

I’ll have to be honest and say that some of the sexual situations described in it irked me, but I think this was the author’s intention. I can’t say more about the sex because it is linked to the investigative part of the novel and I don’t want to spoil anyone.

The novel has two twists, one very predictable to a seasoned reader of whodunits like myself, but the other one surprised me which is not an easy thing to do. Overall, I wonder why more people are not talking about this book. I consider myself lucky for stumbling upon it on NetGalley because I doubt I’d have found it otherwise. I’ll be keeping an eye out for more books by Ms Kinsey.

This was a hard read for me. I am familiar with the world of BDSM but this was tough. I did feel like I was getting a private tour into the real lifestyle and not that of a vanilla writer playing with a playroom and some toys.

"A sociopath may be attracted to BDSM, but real kinksters are all about consent. A serial killer isn't."

I thought as a crime novel, a serial killer who done it, the book was decent. In the beginning there were too many Point of Views that had me confused as to who was whom and the synopsis listed Gina as a main character but it took forever to get to her.

Once we finally get to her, learn about the past Gina and Hanson shared the story starts to get interesting. The relationship between Hanson and Gina was complicated but nothing short of HOT! What they will do for each other is well...I am speechless. I am not bringing this up to say it is a romance, far from it. It is just another twist to this complicated, intriguing and horrific story plot.

The end of the book was much better and I will say it sat me down pretty quick. I will say it is not for everyone and definitely not for the faint of heart or someone with a weak stomach. The crime scenes were pretty gruesome.

Note: I received this book for free in exchance of an honest review.

Red by Kate Kinsey is a mystery thriller set in the world of S&M, whitch means a serial killer acting around bizarre sex adepts. Not my usual reading style, for sure, but the plot is very tight and catched my atention from start to finish. The story is really well played, and I keep guessing about the identity of the murderer. There are a lot of characters to follow, but it never becomes confusing or distracting. Obviously there are some hot sex scenes, which are well imersed in the storytelling and add to the style and focus of the novel.

One thing I have to say is that the characterization is not as good as the mystery plot. There are some good dialogue moments in the book, that´s true, but overall the protagonistas are not that developed. The cops sound very common, and what set the story apart is the look on the alternative lifestyle by a versed author. Not a book for young readers, and those with an open mind will surely apreciate the effort.

Red, is a mystery thriller that takes centers around the lifestyle know as kink, BDSM. To the community they are church going, charity giving law abiding citizens. That is the face the outside world sees, and in fact they are all these things. They are teachers, dentist, etc. But it isn't something they talk about, not out in the open in their everything day lives. Someone doesn't like what they do, someone thinks they are all a bunch of perverts a taint on the community. Someone is out to make them stop.

Kate Kinsey has written this book very well. Parts of this book are very dark and very disturbing, some of things read about at the crime scenes had me squirming in my chair as I read them. Not for the faint of heart. In my head I saw play out so vivid like I was watching it on the big screen. I was rather surprised by the time I had finished.

Fantastic book, highly recommend, just don't be eating tomato soup while doing so like I was, you might not want to finish it.

This story was very good as a thriller, set around the world of BDSM.

It kept me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out 'who done it' for most of the story. I did have an inkling towards the end (and was right). The description of the murders were wonderful, in a macabre way.

The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because I found the characters a mixed bag. I wasn't sure if I liked or despised Griggs and Hanson. Their attitude towards the lifestyle came across as comical yet offensive. It did succeed in showing how ignorant people not aware of the lifestyle can be. Not sure I like how it was done though, IDK.

That aside it was a great ride, and I intend to check out more stories by this (no longer new to me) author.

OMG!!!! This story was amazing! Not what I expected and didn't know if I would enjoy a BDSM, but this story was well written and very tastefully done. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that has never read a BDSM. This plot line focuses more of the emotions behind BDSM as opposed to just sex. Its also a very engaging thriller.

Detective Hanson, his ex partner and lover Gina ( BDSM extraordinaire who was outed and forced to leave the department) are on the chase to found a serial killer mutilating some of the elite players in the BDSM underground community. While the search for the killer they rediscover each other, that is if Hanson can get past his fear.
