This autobiography is sprinkled with poems and couplets here and there, making it moderate difficulty level of Hindi. Would have loved it more had there been chapters or parts, instead of one giant chunk. But then the autobiography itself is divided into 4 books.
Starts with his employment, becoming father, and risking it all for doing a thesis on Yeats. The couple of years spent in Cambridge University have the background and mindset explained for churning out some of his great poems. There's this part when he's returning to India on a yacht, that was so beautifully explained that I felt like reading it on a yacht.
All in all, a heartwarming honest account written in a captivating prose.
Personal Note: This is the fourth Indian autobiography in which a peculiar similarity was observed - going to England! [MK Gandhi, Khushwant Singh, Ruskin Bond, HR Bachchan… and more to come?]

इस खण्ड तक आते आते बच्चन नीरस लगने लगे हैं। इतना भी क्या आत्म बखान करना था कवि को! आगे पढ़ती हूँ चौथा खण्ड भी। बहरहाल मैं जानती हूँ उस के शीर्षक से ही पता लगता है कि वह कवि के कौन से जीवन संदर्भ की व्याख्या है।
इस खंड में बीच बीच में कुछ जीवन दर्शन है, जो पठनीय है। शेष उनके कैम्ब्रिज के अनुभव और कातरता का विस्तार से विवरण है। तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री नेहरू से निकटता और तेजी बच्चन पर उनके पति की भावनात्मक निर्भरता का स्पष्ट उल्लेख है।

यह बच्चन की आत्मकथा का तीसरा खंड है जिसमें उन्होंने मुख्यतः कैंब्रिज यूनिवर्सिटी में अपने पीएचडी करने के समय का वर्णन किया है। अपने बारे में इतने सूक्ष्म और निर्भीक तरीके से लिखा गया है की पढ़ने के दौरान आप स्वयं उस जीवन को जीने लगते है। दुख भोगते हुए देखना एक अलग तरह की अनुभूति प्रदान करता है।
स्वयं बच्चन अपनी रचना के बारे में कहते है
इस आत्मचित्रण का ध्येय अपने को आपके सामने प्रस्तुत करना ही नहीं रहा है, अपने को अपने सामने प्रस्तुत करना भी रहा है—जैसे कोई शीशे के सामने खड़े होकर अपने की देखें। और इसमें सफलता का जो मानदण्ड मैंने रखा था, वह भी आपको बता दूँ। मैं अपने को आपके सामने ऐसा प्रस्तुत करूँ कि मुझमें आप अपने को भी देख सकें। और मैं अपने को अपने सामने ऐसा प्रस्तुत करूँ कि उसमें मैं आपको भी देख सकूँ। शायद आत्म-चित्रण की इससे कठिन कसौटी नहीं हो सकती। कला और जीवन दोनों इस कसौटी पर चढ़े हैं।
तीनों खंडों में यह भाग मुझे ज्यादा देर तक बांधे रहने में सफल रहा। जल्द ही अंतिम खंड भिंपाढ़ा जायेगा।
