Seventy-six writers connected to the Seton Hill University Writing Popular Fiction program have created a multi-genre charity anthology entitled Hazard Yet Forward. All proceeds from this project will benefit Donna Munro, a 2004 graduate of the program. Munro, a teacher living in St. Louis, Missouri, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.
Genres represented in the book range from horror to romance to mystery – and everything in between. Some of the notable writers in the anthology are World Fantasy Award winner Nalo Hopkinson, Bram Stoker winners Michael A. Arnzen and Michael Knost, Bram Stoker nominee Lawrence C. Connolly, ALA/YALSA Best Book for Young Adults winner Jessica Warman, Rita finalist Dana Marton, Spur award winner Meg Mims, Asimov's Reader's Award winner Timons Esaias and WV Arts and Humanities literary fellowships winner, Geoffrey Cameron Fuller.
Soon after the June writers' retreat at Seton Hill University, the alumni learned that one of the retreat organizers, Donna Munro, had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. A call went out for people to submit stories for a collection to help Donna while she undergoes treatment. More than 70 writers responded, and the whole collection was put together in an astonishing five weeks.
The collection reflects the diverse genre writings of the authors, many of whom are graduates of the Seton Hill graduate program in writing popular fiction. (One of whom is my husband, Ron Edison.) Some of the stories have won awards, and a lot of them are thought-provoking, funny, sad, and definitely worth reading. With more than 700 pages of stories, you're bound to find something you like.
I read this while I should have been getting ready for my new teaching semester. I couldn't stop myself. Story after story pulled me until I came upon the end in surprise--you don't get the same warning about the conclusion in an ebook that you do in a paperback. I was so sad there wasn't more. I went back and reread some of my favorites. Donna Munro's story was sheer excellence. My story held up, I thought, but some standouts stories by Timons Esaias, Mike Arnzen, John Dixon and Adam Brown, Lee Howard, Sally Bosco, Ron Gavalik, David L. Day, Marge Burke, J. L. Benet, Nikki Hopeman, Nalo Hopkinson, Scott A. Johnson, Gary Jonas, Jacki King, Dana Marton, W. D. Prescott, Ron Shannon, Chris Stout, and too many more to mention. I'm happy this book exists.
This anthology is such a treat. Disclosure -- my short story, Seafire (YA medieval fantasy) is in this collection. But that doesn't stop me from posting this because I looked forward to reading the other great offerings in so many different genres! From Timons Esaias "Full Contact" about aliens and baseball, to the many horror styles (subtle and not so subtle) of Mike Arnzen, Nikki Hopeman, Leadie Flowers, Kristin Dearborn and others, to fantasy by David Corwell and Alexa Grave, urban paranormal and mystery... you name it, it's in here. A real study for creative writing students, too!
This anthology features my story "The Turnpike" and fits in well with the many genres featured here. I enjoyed every story here and if you like reading a little bit of everything, this is for you. In addition, all sales go to a great cause--helping a fellow writer, currently fighting cancer
Disclaimer: I am one of the editors/contributors. However, with so many great stories in here you're bound to find some new favorites. Plus, since it's a charity anthology, it's more than worth the price.
