Healing Burnout with Astrology & Tarot: A Journey through the Decans of the Zodiac

Rate this book
A unique fusion of tarot and astrology dedicated to lightworkers and individuals working in service and conscious activism, including tools, contemplative questions, and rituals.Healing Burnout with Astrology & Tarot is a tarot-astrology devotional of sorts for the helpers and healers of this world—including lightworkers, starseeds, intuitives, creatives, teachers, and other changemakers—who seek to manage the realities of burnout while remaining engaged in creating a more just, peaceful, and equitable world. It does so by introducing the decan system within astrology—in which signs are split into three detailed sections, based on degrees—and explaining how to use them for self-care and personal growth. It also introduces the concept of tarot correspondences, which can be used alongside the decan system in a detailed yearlong journey of reflection that meets readers where they are—searching for answers—and guides them to a place of intuition, wisdom, and integration. Full of tools, contemplative questions, rituals, and tarot exercises—in addition to appendices providing at-a-glance information on the decan system in astrology, tarot meanings, signs, planets, and houses—this book will heal, inspire, and sustain burnt-out lightworkers so that they can, once again, engage in joyful advocacy for justice, peace, and liberation.

There are so many problems with this book. First, it seems like the subtitle "a journey through the decans" was added just to profit from the popularity of decan walks, as none of the book relates to decan themes or the Picatrix. The author has a very poor understanding of astrology that detracts from decan walk studies.

Second, there are so many erroneous references peppered throughout the book. For example, she identifies Dr Daniel Amen as the creator of "ANTS (Automatic Negative Thoughts)", which are actually part of Dr. Aaron Beck's Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Third, she's very focused on Jesus. This should be reflected on the back cover description, the title, or both, to forewarn the reader because she makes many inaccurate interpretations that are obviously religiously biased. I doubt most Christians will appreciate her new age take on Catholic syncretism. Certainly, people of other faiths will be irritated as she inaccurately attributes their beliefs as reflections of Christianity, when the opposite is true.

For example, on page x she talks about how Jesus is a solar deity figure who influenced other cultures, using the Egyptian God Ra to illustrate her point. Which is illogical because Egyptian mythology is older than Christianity and the only God in that pantheon similar to Christ is Osiris. It's also puzzling why she, as a Christian, associates Joseph with only the Torah.

Tldr: Save your money, don't buy this. If you're interested in decans, read Susan S. Chang's 36 Secrets. If you're hoping to heal from burnout, check out the Self-Care Prescription, especially chapter 5.

As someone unfamiliar with star signs but looking for a self-help book to ease academic pressure, I found this book to be an excellent guide to uncovering hidden traits and the sciences connecting astrology with human behavior.

The book is stunning and interactive, not only with the exercises and affirmations tailored to each star sign or to each person moving through each star-signed time of the year (how each tilt of the earth/shift of the sun can affect impact the harmony of the mind and soul) but with different numerical patterns for organizing the year, tarot card combinations for guidance, or standalone self-help in any page chosen at random. In short, Hope is masterful at ensuring this book feels different every time but provides enough love and guidance for readers not to feel lost, as I often have before with these subjects.

I spent the most time in the Capricorn section, learning about the sense of confinement common because of the sun's location directly above the equator. The book encouraged that, during this time when it seems like control is slipping, distractions are abundant, and it can be easy to retreat into oneself, to meditate on the naturalness of time's fluctuations. The author also recommends bringing creative energy to the critical mind to avoid feeling overwhelmed and "heal the spirit of extreme hierarchy," which I think many, including myself, have experienced to some extent.

Overall, I recommend this book to anyone looking for an elegantly written introduction to the timeless, symbolic world of astrology and tarot to relieve modern burnout.

Grounded in peace and equity, Healing Burnout with Astrology & Tarot gives readers a hands-on introduction to using tarot and astrology to pause in times of major stress and really think about who we are and what inspires our hearts. I have always been interested in the history of astrology and tarot, fascinated by such a spiritual practice once used by ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks, and this book really gives a beginner like me a better understanding of the practices themselves and how they can be applied in the modern world.

I also found this book to be inspiring in a way that I wasn’t expecting; until now, I haven’t been offered many realistic solutions for ending burnout, but this book gives heartfelt guidance based on my star sign and tools like meditative questions to be reflective and view time in a completely different way. It has changed my perspective and really opened my eyes to seeing the world in a different way. Time has always been stressful, broken down into hours and days of work, rest days and work days, filled with things to do. I had never learned about decans, but now I can visualize time in a new way, separated into 10-day periods and influenced by the planets, stars, and signs. And since I am new to the topic, I really appreciate the appendices that offer organized information on star signs, houses, planets, and tarot meaning. After reading this book, I have a new appreciation for the vastness of the universe and my own capabilities to recognize times of burnout as times to also stop and reflect.

What would you do if every day were summer vacation? How can you light your soul? These are pressing questions to ask yourself to begin healing your burnout. Jackie Hope digs deep and embarks on a journey through the decans of the zodiac to heal yourself from ailments and mental stressors. The first step is finding your purpose, and right now, my purpose is to read this book and discover new ways to heal and rejuvenate my mind, body, and soul.

The devotionals, reflections, and showcases of the decans were insightful and a delight to read and learn. Each one I read, I could instantly connect and understand. Reading the book was like going to a live psychic for astrology and tarot reading. The connection was so powerful that the universe knew my thoughts and feelings, and the force was strong. I would recommend getting the best experience by reading a chapter daily and reflecting on it personally, either by talking to someone else or writing in a journal. After I finished the book, I felt like a brand new person with a new lease on life.

There was nothing to dislike about the book. The book is well-edited, written, and structured. The writing style and word choice are crucial for these books because there has to be a powerful connection to the readers, and Hope achieves that in spades. I will recommend this book to everyone I know who is looking for enlightenment, rejuvenation, and healing. There is no question this book deserves a five star rating.

Jackie Hope didn’t write a book for readers who want to finish reading it in one sitting and be miraculously cured of all their burnout-induced symptoms. It takes time, deep thought, and dedication to realign yourself and find balance at the end of the day.

While Healing Burnout with Astrology and Tarot is full of information, the book is crafted in a way for even beginners to understand and enjoy the basics of astrology and tarot. It won’t be an easy journey to heal yourself, but if you’re exhausted of finding a stranger looking back at you in the mirror, your medical bills are piling up because managing your stress feels impossible, and you’re eager to try and find a way out of the darkness, this book could very well be the light you need to set you back on your true path.

Maybe it’s just me but I missed the part where it helps you deal with burn out. There was no explanation of finding decans so I had to do my own research online to figure them out. I looked at the decan for my sun for instance and it’s estate planning. That… doesn’t help my burn out? Similarly my moon’s was like, “watch your salt intake.” Okay? My salt intake is fine. If you’re meant to take it day by day, where today is based on today’s decan, I still don’t think estate planning/thinking about ancestors or monitoring salt intake helps burnout… but maybe it’ll help you. I flipped through a few others and my socks weren’t knocked off. I found it impractical (because you’ll have to figure out which abstract entry related to each day of the calendar) and not exactly connected with the title.
