Are you currently learning the Japanese language and struggling to find some good material?
This book was written with the sole purpose of filling the gap in engaging Japanese material for native English speakers learning the language
Did you know that stories are a fantastic way to learn a language? This is because learning through stories gives the student context of the words and phrases that they are using. This means that they will later be confident to use the same terms or vocabulary for themselves as they know which context they come in.
Not only that but what is better than a fun and captivating story? Without a doubt, this is the most fun way to learn a language. Unlike sitting in a weekend class staring at workbook exercises, stories have characters, a plot, conflict and the resolution. Whether fiction or not learning vocabulary through stories is a proven concept that has stood the test of time.
This book has seven Japanese stories. Each story has an interesting and engaging storyline that allows you to understand the Japanese culture better. Each story is also translated into English and has a vocabulary list that has been put into a nice table. This has been done to help you to memorise the vocabulary from each story.

I enjoyed reading these short Japanese stories, it was a short and fun read! I wasn’t interested much in learning the language but for anyone who would like to, this book is also great for you! The stories are in English but there is also a Japanese version of each of them at the end of the story as well as a translation key after you read the story or at the ending, which shows the symbols, the English word as well as the Japanese words. I would read this again, just to get a fun, short read and to just read the stories that were written in this book! All in all, I would recommend this book, no matter your age, and if you want to read the short stories or just help learn a new language! Anyone can read these, even if you want to just read it to someone as well. There was also a link to listening to an audiobook version which I didn’t since I just read over the stories!
This was a short but sweet book of stories with morals. I love how after every story they have the Japanese version of the same story, so you can learn Japanese at the same time you read the English version. They also have a word key at the end of every story. This word key will give you the kanji, hiragana, or katakana in the Japanese version of the story and translate it into English. It also gives you the correct pronunciation of the Japanese characters. At the end of the book, there's a glossary of Romaji to English, Kanji to English, and the audio version of the stories you can download and listen to. This is especially helpful if you want to hear it in Japanese and are learning pronunciation. My son thoroughly enjoyed listening to these audio stories as he is in his second year of Japanese. I recommend this book to anyone loving short story fables and especially to those who are learning the Japanese language!
One of my favorite tools for language learning! Though the recommended ages are 10-18, this is a great choice for adults as well. The stories are short and entertaining, and each contains its own vocabulary. Readers can use the vocab lists to support their understanding of the story or they can choose to further challenge themselves by learning the words through various context clues. I appreciate that this book also comes with audio making it an even more versatile learning tool. Whether you are learning through an app, in a classroom, online, or through another method, this is a great addition to your learning!
Japanese Short Stories by Takumi Nonaka is a great way for Japanese language learners to increase their vocabulary. By reading each tale first in English and then in Japanese, with a key for the different symbols and their English word counterpart, readers can begin to make connections between various words and their meanings. There is also an audiobook link to assist with proper pronunciation as you go through each story. As a self taught Japanese speaker, Nonaka knows how to make learning and retention fun!
