Callahan Rush lived the wild, hard partying life of a rock star for years. As the lead singer of the band, The Rebels, he soaked up all the attention until Rosie, his girlfriend, helped him get sober. She was his saving grace until one fateful night when tragedy struck. Cal stepped out of the spotlight and fell back into addiction after her death. He would have lost everything if not for his sister pulling him out of the gutter.

Cal had become completely complacent with his boring life until he sees Lucy again. Lucy, a girl he’s known since they were kids, is so hyper focused on becoming a vet she never sees him coming. They both have been single for so long but can’t deny the indescribable pull they feel towards each other. Could this be their happily ever after?

Full Review posted at A Book Lovin' Mama's Blog

I found Broken by Jennifer Kent while scrolling for a book to read on BookSirens one day and was intrigued by the synopsis to check out this book from this author I’ve never read before. I love stories where one of the MCs has a second chance at not only love but at life.

I loved reading how Lucy and Cal were finding love with one another in different ways. Cal gets a second chance with someone else, and Lucy ends up with her longtime crush, who actually understands her and won’t walk away, even though she’s working and studying all the time. I’ve always loved reading age-gap romances, and when it comes to Cal and Lucy, there’s a nine-age gap, and it may bother some readers, especially with the mention of Jimmy (who is Lucy’s uncle, but they are not blood-related). I loved that both characters knew each other, and they were friends first and then lovers. Their story was promising, and I was rooting for them to have a HEA.

Now, why did I give this book three stars? (I would actually rate it 3.25, but Goodreads and Amazon won’t let me.) One of the reasons is that this book was marked as having a happily ever on BookSirens but ended up having a cliffhanger instead. It was a predictable cliffhanger, too, since it was one of the MMC’s fears when forming a relationship with Lucy. Then there was the issue of the brother-in-law and sister not knowing that Cal and Lucy were together because Lucy was constantly over Cal’s place sneaking out. No, that wasn’t believable for a second that they hadn’t figured it out until then. Plus, the way Jimmy handled it could have been dealt with better, and I wouldn’t say I liked how Cal was about to break it off because he was intimidated by Jimmy. There were other minor things that I noticed that bugged me, one of them being the time that Lucy got a tattoo, and it wasn’t addressed how long she waited for it to heal before she jumped into a pool. These are just some minor timeline issues that I found confusing.

I’m hoping Jennifer Kent doesn’t leave us hanging for too long because I need to know if Cal and Lucy do get their HEA. They both deserve one, after everything they went through in this book, the good and the bad.

“She makes me want to be a better man”

First and most important, before I discuss anything else about this book, let me warn you, it’s a Cliffhanger! And it’s a brutal one. It irritates me to no end when an author writes a cliffhanger and doesn’t disclose that anywhere, not even a little hint. There is zero excuse for it and I find it sneaky and misleading. Oh, and as this book is less than two hundred pages, it’s not even like it was separated due to length. If you want to write a cliffhanger or serial story, then fine. It’s your right as the author to do so. But be honest and upfront about it. Make it clear in the blurb that this isn’t the entire story. I personally avoid cliffhangers for the most part but occasionally make exceptions. But even when I do read one I wait until all the parts are available. I have neither the time nor the patience to wait to find out how the story ends. The saddest thing with this book is it would have easily been a four or four and a half star book except it’s not finished. How can I rate a book when I don’t know how the story will end? Maybe once the rest is published I may revise my rating. Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing when that will be or even how many other parts I will have to wait for. Until then, this is the best I can do.

The story itself is really good. It’s filled with emotions and angst. I loved both Cal and Lucy. Cal especially broke my heart. I love second chance love stories and rockstar romances so this book is right up my alley. I hope the rest is published soon and continues to be as good. I hate having the momentum broken. Takes away from the enjoyment if you know what I mean….

Broken is the first book in His Personal Angel Series. It is a steamy, second chance, bit of an age gap romance. Cal is a former Rockstar who now owns his own tattoo studio. Lucy is a young lady going to veterinary school and has had a crush on Cal since she was younger. Cal left the music industry after he tragically lost his girlfriend in an accident 3 years ago. His sister Cassidy pulled him out after he was going down a drinking and drug spiral. He and Lucy grew up together, but she is 9 years younger than him. They reconnect when she dog sits for Cassidy's dogs and begin a relationship. Although this is a steamy romance, it is also a story about self-healing and learning to let happiness back in after grief. The love story is so sweet. The chemistry between Cal and Lucy was off the charts, and I loved the witty banter. My only complaint is the cliffhanger at the end 😗 I can't wait for book 2!.

This is a fast paced book that focuses on Cal who is trying to overcome his tragic past and Lucy who is determined to finish her degree strong to become the one thing she has always dreamed of.
Even having known each other their whole lives it takes hitting rock bottom for one and helping out close family friends to bring two unlikely people together.
Their chemistry is off the charts. The character building/relationship is definitely there- a little repetitive in some parts but overall was good.
I really enjoyed the characters growth through out this story and cannot wait to continue this story, especially after that cliffhanger 😮‍💨🤯

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The spice level: 🌶️ 🌶️ 🌶️
The angst: 🥵🥵🥵🥵
The banter: 😆 😆 😆

Broken is the story of Cal and Lucy.
Cal has suffered a tragedy a few years back, and is trying to move on with his life.
Lucy is in the process of completing her studies and finally realizing her dream of becoming a veterinarian.
These two have known each other for many years, but when they meet again, the attraction between them is immediate.

The chemistry between the characters is extraordinary, and there's no denying that they were made for each other.
The characters evolve beautifully throughout the story. Their personal development keeps pace with the evolution of their relationship. I love how Lucy gradually comes out of her shell and becomes the woman Cal wants.

But Broken isn't just a romance, it's a story of grief, guilt, forgiveness and healing.

Be warned, this tome ends on a cliffhanger! I really wasn't expecting it, and now I can't wait to see how Cal and Lucy manage to get through the trials that come their way.

I didn’t realize that this book ended on a cliffhanger. I wouldn’t have read it if I had known. This book wasn’t bad but it didn’t grab me. There was nothing in this book that had me looking forward to finding out more about the characters. I did not sense any chemistry between them and there is a lot of non action that happens in this book. I don’t know that I will read the second one just because I don’t have a burning desire to know what happened and based on what I deduced from the current book I’m pretty sure I know what will happen next.

Cal and Lucy

This is a new to me author and she’s off to a good start with this rock romance. Cal had it all….until he didn’t. After losing his girlfriend he spirals turning to the addictions he once had until his sister helps him out.

Lucy was nine years younger than Cal but always had eyes for him so now maybe she would get her chance. She had a love for animals and wanted nothing more than to be a vet. Would she be able to get a chance with Cal now that things have changed in his life. Be warned of the cliffhanger. I can’t wait to see what comes next.

Cal used to be the lead singer of the Rebels, and partied very hard until his girlfriend, Rosie, made him get sober. When she died, life had no meaning and he went back to using until his sister helped him. He owns his own tattoo studio.

He meets Lucy, who is in veterinary school and has had a crush on him for years, has been dog sitting for his sister. There is still a lot of baggage for him to deal with around the loss of Rosie. Can he risk his heart again?

This ends on a cliffhanger.

I loved this book, it was sweet, amazing, and incredible. It has romance and it had heat. I loved both characters and I liked how Lucy was working hard to achieve her goals and get her career started. I loved Cal and the connection between him and Lucy. I felt bad for the guilt he carried, but I like how Lucy didn't blame him for what happened in his past.

A fantastic read

A brilliant read from Jennifer Kent. Callahan & Lucy's story combines a brilliant mix of sensuality, romance & a second chance. He's suffered & she's so focused on becoming a Vet that nothing else matters. After many years seeing her again changes him & he can't deny the incredible pull he feels. Do they have a chance at a HEA?.

This is my first book I've read by Jennifer Kent and this is the first book in the His Personal Angel series. And how I enjoyed the story of Lucy and Cal. Lucy is on her way to achieving her dreams and goals to kick-start her career. Cal also has his own backpack but together they were great and complement each other. Highly recommended read and can't wait for the next book in this series.

I like the premise that we are all allowed second chances. I'm not too keen on all the angst, though. I would have read this book faster if it didn't screw with my brain so much. :D My empathy bone was tingling like crazy! I'm glad they got their HEA.

Okay first off 10/10. But the cliff hanger. Wooooooof. The whole thing had me so invested and definitely didn’t want to put the book down. But now I need number 2. Like yesterday. The author created such good characters that are so dreamy!!

I enjoyed this romance and it did have an element of suspense. Cal is a former rock star who left the band after a fan drugged him and his girlfriend found them and died while driving away from the scene. Lucy is a younger woman who is about to become a veterinarian. Her sweetness and compassion break through the darkness that Cal has lived in since the accident. I did enjoy this novel; however, it is a cliffhanger and a BIG one! I also only found this mild to moderately spicy. I do plan on reading the sequel to find out who seems to be targeting this past rockstar and his leading lady!

I feel a bit cheated here. Where I got the ARC marked this book as a HEA, but it leaves off on a cliffhanger. And with no real ending other than The End.

After losing his fiancee, Cal goes on a bit of a bender before his sister saves him and his life. Now three years later, he's doing better but sort of stuck in a rut. That is until he re-meets Lucy, who's dog-sitting for his sister. And he's a bit of a goner for her. Lucy is a bit younger than him, nine years as we find out later, and is just finishing her schooling to become a vet. And Lucy's always had a bit of a crush on him.

And a very slow relationship started between them, which I loved. Everything was taken at Lucy's pace and Cal worked hard to ensure Lucy always knew she was wanted and that he was great at the pace they were going. And neither set of parents had an issue with their relationship either, just the brother-in-law who was also Lucy's Godfather. Leading to an almost breakup. But just as it seems like they'd be together for the long haul, the book ends abruptly with a cliffhanger.

It almost feels like the author forgot to submit the last few chapters and whoever was editing just stuck The End where they had material to and called it good. I feel this book could have used a good dialogue editor as I feel Cal talked very formally for a former rock star. And while maybe cute, it's a bit of a pet peeve of mine to have the MMC called baby, especially if he's built like Cal was described. I also want to know how Cal's sister and brother-in-law didn't know sooner that these two were in a relationship as Cal was living on their property and Lucy spent a lot of time there.
