J.A. Huss

J.A. Huss never wanted to be a writer and she still dreams of that elusive career as an astronaut. She originally went to school to become an equine veterinarian but soon figured out they keep horrible hours and decided to go to grad school instead. That Ph.D wasn’t all it was cracked up to be (and she really sucked at the whole scientist thing), so she dropped out and got a M.S. in forensic toxicology just to get the whole thing over with as soon as possible.

After graduation she got a job with the state of Colorado as their one and only hog farm inspector and spent her days wandering the Eastern Plains shooting the shit with farmers. After a few years of that, she got bored. And since she was a homeschool mom and actually does love science, she decided to write science textbooks and make online classes for other homeschool moms. She wrote more than two hundred of those workbooks and was the number one publisher at the online homeschool store many times, but eventually she covered every science topic she could think of and ran out of shit to say.

So in 2012 she decided to write fiction instead. That year she released her first three books and started a career that would make her a New York Times bestseller and land her on the USA Today Bestseller’s List eighteen times in the next three years. Her books have sold millions of copies all over the world, the audio version of her semi-autobiographical book, Eighteen, was nominated for a Voice Arts Award and an Audie award in 2016 and 2017 respectively, her audiobook Mr. Perfect was nominated for a Voice Arts Award in 2017, and her book, Taking Turns, was nominated for an Audie Award in 2018. Johnathan McClain is her first (and only) writing partner and even though they are worlds apart in just about every way imaginable, it works.

She lives on a ranch in Central Colorado with her family.

Oh this book! I'm just gushing over this book!! This book is like the best run on sentence in the best speech given by the best romance author ever!

This is a rom-com. And I LOL'ed at many parts, especially the #truestories. Those were epically hilarious. But so much of this book just hit home with the culture of the romance world.

I think indie romance authors and their readers are unique. I know my favorite authors and they know me and that's such a different experience than what my sister has with her favorite authors who have no idea who she is. Her authors don't have book signings and don't talk to their fans on Facebook and don't have fan groups. My authors know me. I feel special when they acknowledge me or they remember me and maybe that's silly. But I just do. The signing convention, which was named a little Easter egg for fans of Julie and Johnathan, just reminded me of the signings that I have been to. I have been an assistant at a few signings for authors and it is pretty much like that. You have the chance to talk to your authors and get them to sign and personalize books and get pictures with them. And you go home and you feel like it was such a cool day.

But there's another part of the romance world that isn't so cool. And it's the drama that comes with it. It can be ugly at times. If a rumor gets out about an author, fans can just get nasty. And it almost is like this mentality where they just gang up and attack an author. If an author does something that really is truly wrong, they're finished. But we do have to remember that these authors are real people. Leaving horrible nasty one star reviews on books that we haven't read just because we don't like the author is bad reader behavior. I have seen some nasty behavior on goodreads that makes me sick. We need to be better as readers. (Some authors need to be better as authors.) Authors are real people. They can't write any faster. They're going to write cliffhangers. They're going to change the covers of their books. And it is what it is.

I loved the fact that Cordelia and Steve talked about writing what they wanted to write and the consequences of what the fans would do. If you want to write something and it might not sell as well, write it anyway. Who cares? Go for it. Somebody will love it and if they don't love it, there's other books out there that they will love. We have to stop caring what other people think.

But this is a review about what I think. I loved it. End of story.

All Cordelia ever wanted was to be a romance author so attending the annual romance writers con was a must! When she finds out her favorite author, S.S. will be attending she can’t wait to meet her…well, at least until she finds out Essie/S.S. isn’t who she said she is. What Cordelia didn’t know was S.S. Isn’t Essie… it’s her twin brother Steve! What will Cordelia do when she finds out the truth? Romance Book Cons, silliness and mistaken identities combine in this cute and quirky romcom. A little corny at times for me but all in all a fun and easy read. Told in dual POV & third person.

Well, I kind of hated this book, but I like the author (s), and I think their other work is pretty fun, so I’m leaving this at three stars because I’m not a heartless bastard. I just hope Huss & McClain will make a silent pact to never write romantic comedy again. Because it was flaccid on both romance and comedy. I also thought it was meant to seem like it was an *insider* view of the writing gig, but I found it awkwardly condescending to its audience.

I also listened to it on audible. Normally, I love JM’s narration, but someone needed to give him more direction on this one. He seemed embarrassed to be doing it. But he helped write it! Anyway, the sex scenes were cringey, and “Steve” only seemed to be voiced as a caricature. Nope.

What a fun story! Steve Smith’s dream is to be a successful Sci-fi novelist. Unfortunately, he hasn’t found that success yet. In fact, his latest sci-fi book received so many negative reviews that he has not written anything for a year. In the interim, he started writing successful romance novels but didn’t want anyone to know. He uses his twin sister as the face of SS and his cover to keep his identity a secret. He thought that as long as people didn’t know he wrote romance, sci-fi fans would eventually accept one of his books under his real name.

Steve’s pseudonym SS runs a big, multi-day author signing event called Sin With Us Romance Convention. This year’s new author is Cynthia Lear, aka Cordelia. Steve admires her writing, and when they meet, they click. Cynthia is excited to have this validation of her writing.

This book made me laugh and get a little teary. The laughing was throughout the story. The teary eyes were scenes with parents. The author signing has a lot of drama going on, which made me laugh out loud. I attended some real-life signings that made the events seem believable because they can be wild, both good and bad.

The main characters are believable and come to life from page one. They both struggle to find success with their writing. They both deal with parents who aren’t happy with their careers. Steve’s parents think he is mooching off his successful sister, while Cordelia’s parents, successful TV writers, don’t encourage her writing. Steve is an all-around good guy who helps others writing romance.

The ancillary characters add to the story. The parents, authors, and friends let us see these characters through many eyes. There is the “bad guy,” well, gal really, and her fans. An author whose popularity is waning after a plagiarism controversy and suit. Steve’s friends have been with him since his school days. They know his secret and support him. Cordelia’s friend and assistant, Brooke. She supports Cordelia through thick and thin and the other authors attending the signing.

This story is so much fun. I love Julie and Johnathan’s romantic comedies. They are engaging from the start and make me continue to turn the page without any breaks. I loved these characters, and I would like to attend Sin With Us Romance Convention again in the future. It is a wonderful world to live in for four hundred pages.

OMG I loved every single moment in this book!!!!! This was a very nice refresher or pallet cleanser from the previous books I've been reading. You will NOT want to put this book down. I. ate. it. up. The book had no slow points whatsoever. I really felt like I was at the biggest romance signing convention. It was funny too. Cordelia (Cynthia Lear as pen name) was a cute kind of quirky character whose trying to make it big in the romance world but writes outside traditional writing standards. Steve is a previous turned Sci-Fi writer to Romance writer, but uses his twin sister Essie as the "face/author" of Steve's business so no one would judge a man writing Romance. He is lucratively successful. Steve has read Cordelia's work which has inspired some of his own writing and when a last minute author cancellation happens, Cordelia immediately is moved up as next invite on the list. Things just go on from there as also some bonker things happen too! Great cast of characters and even with Steve's friends in the epilogue was really cute. TRY THIS ONE OUT, I highly enjoyed it for a pick me up read.

I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

This is JA Huss's and Jonathan McClain's newest book release! I LOVED this. So funny/fun and if you missed Book Bonanza, never fear, you can go in a book, because this one is a romcom about a writer at a romance author/book convention. I love so many things about this book but I'm afraid to spoil it. The audio is also AMAZING. Perfect narrator choices.

One thing I do want to mention is the POV in this. the H and h each get first person present tense POVs but then anything that happens in the story with other characters that the main characters can't "be there for", it's in third person present tense omniscient. And it's BRILLIANT. I love it and hope this becomes a "a thing" because someday I want to write a book that features this technique. It was extremely well done!

It's a-MAY-zing! Seriously, I had so many giggles at this and who doesn't love to laugh?!?!

It's all about Indie Authors, two in particular - Cynthia and SS and they really did make me giggle. Cynthia sees this as her time to shine but from the very beginning,it's all going wrong! That girl needs a massive dose of confidence and although her bestie Britney does her best, it's not enough. And when her hero in writing turns out to be not who she thought, yet says he's a big fan of hers, she doesn't know what to believe and her thoughts are so nuts - understandable but still nuts 😆😆

Then we have Steve who knows he's messed things up, Cynthia is here, he's in awe, majorly attracted to her and really wants more but again, things aren't going to plan!

It's filled with misunderstandings, laughs, attraction, some hot scenes, more laughs, someone out to destroy them, more laughs, and more laughs again.

Thoroughly enjoyed it 🤗

Steve and Essie twins and famous romance writer
This is such an amazingly funny story about competitive writers and book fans and how very complicated life can become when a lie comes out and a really really vindictive author you hate but kinda love too lol
The things that happened to her 🤣
I just loved the book convention, the AI omg I thought was awesome reminded me of another, so clever and never to be underestimated but that’s another story 🤔
And the romance of course with the moral of the story written in Cords book
And of course the characters in SS book those names were awesome lol
Loved the bit with the couple from creeping beautiful 💜
Such an entertaining and fabulous book
Thank you Julie and Jonathan you make a great team x

Not only is this story about books, it's about authors and it's about signings...all of my favorite things.
It is a funny story that kind of hits on all of the things I love about authors and signings but also all of the things I detest about authors (some of them in any case) and signings. Any of us who have spent any time in Romancelandia have seen the events of this story happen in one fashion or another. I love how Huss and McClain take it all to the most outlandish heights while still maintaining the main storyline which in the end is two authors falling in love. I loved the support for up and coming authors and the quick wit of all of our authors and side characters.

Amazing!
I have enjoyed every book that these two authors have collaborated on, so I went into this one with pretty high expectations, and they did not disappoint! The premise of the book revolves around an indie author, finally getting her big break at a Las Vegas book signing, and of course, hilarity ensues. Like all Vegas events, there is a meet cute, crazy fans, sexy narrators, swing dancing and an ambulance ride to the ER.
What more could you ask for, lol.

There's no doubt this book is very well written and heaps of readers love it. For me though, it was quite easy to put it down and pick up something else. There was really nothing much happened that interested me, apart from some of the entertaining banter between the characters and I got a bit bored after a while. Many reviews say the story is really funny and it did remind me of a typical, modern, American sitcom with over the top humour and characters. It does read like a TV script in places and of course it's co authored by an actor/screenwriter/narrator. Actually, thinking about it, I'd probably prefer listening to the audio version.

Also I'd love a dollar for every time the word, 'like', is used. It's a staple word in this book's internal narration and dialogue. I get that in real life these characters would be saying, 'like', all the time, as it peppers speech, (including mine sometimes.) Doesn't mean I 'like' to read it though. It's quite a long book and I got to about a third before I called it quits. Don't let my thoughts put you off, you may love this book to bits.

The curtains are pulled back into the world of book events in this unusual and very smart rom-com. J.A. Huss and Johnathan McClain give us an insider view as to all that occurs from the authors' point of view at these signings as one up-and-coming writer meets a man who not only helps her step out of her comfort zone but changes it in a matter of days.

Cordelia Sarantopoulos is attending her first-ever book event and the talented yet apprehensive woman doesn't even have a clue as to why she's there and feels like somewhat of an outlier being together with all the seasoned authors who she has clearly admired from afar. But when Steve Smith, the Ro Bro and twin of the author known as SS, crosses paths with Cord, not only do sparks ignite between them but a course is set that will undoubtedly make a huge difference in each other's lives forever.

I have to tell you: I've attended over 30 book signings over the last 10 years and what transpires during the Sin With Us Romance Convention is hopefully most in the crazy-good imaginations of Huss and McClain. I mean, it's both wickedly comical and also a bit sad at how fellow authors and readers can turn on you in a matter of what seems like minutes as rumors are spread and secret identities are revealed that could truly ruin one's livelihood for years to come. But it's also very eye-opening, even if most is fictional, of course, that so much can happen in only a few days that can both astound and shock even the most experienced of writers.

The romance between Cord and Steve happens very quickly. I felt as if perhaps a bit too fast, inner proclamations of practically already being in love occurring almost instantaneously. BUT, there is true chemistry between the two as they realize just how much they understand the other as no one else does and provide that support and comfort when things go upside-down and backward. Most at the hand of one bitter and unhinged fellow author. And those scenes, especially the 'meanwhile' mini-chapters were laugh-out-loud funny as we get to witness a mind going a bit insane, one mad moment at a time.

Overall, this bird's eye view of a fictional (or not...I have a feeling neither Huss nor McClain will say) author event had me chuckling over and over while also smiling hugely as Cord gets the HEA she could only dream and/or write about in the most unexpected of ways. Steve is a keeper of the highest order and one of the most sincerely caring men I've read about in a long time. His sister Essie and her husband Mike are truly wonderful as well in a myriad of ways and even his motley crew of friends and writing sprint partners give him the support he needs and are always there for Steve even when busy with their own lives. And lastly, there's Britney, Cord's loyal friend and honorary PA. She's the kind of woman you want by your side and she lifts Cord up every step of the way. I just loved her and wouldn't mind her getting her own book someday.

Huss and McClain prove with The Ro Bro that they are in sync once more with this passionate look into the secret world of authors and all that could (and I'm sure does) exist when personalities and egos clash in close quarters. But it also shows that there are inherently good people out there who only want others to succeed because they truly care for that person(s) in every way possible which is always a beautiful thing.

4 big stars!

Being an avid reader and active attendee of book signings and conventions since 2013, I was delighted when this book was announced. I was so curious to see what they were going to include in this story that may, or may not, be based on something true that might have happened at an actual signing. I’ll be the first to admit, with as many signings as I’ve attended, I never seem to be in the right place at the right time to see or hear any of the juicy stuff, the authors or cover models getting a little too drunk and a little too wild.

Steve and Cordelia pretty much were destined to find each other. It was obvious very early on that these two were of the same mindset in their writing, ideals, and aspirations. Granted, Steve was leaps and bounds ahead of Cordelia in terms of his career, but he wasn’t really, since no one knew he was the true author of all those books SS was famous for. So really, these two were sort of on a similar journey of self-discovery.

I absolutely loved the “Meanwhile…” chapters. And now I want to know more than anything if the character in those chapters is based on a real-life person! We’ll probably never find out but man those chapters were fun!

I loved all the little easter eggs mixed in the story, and seeing the names of several of the readers who are dedicated members of the Shrike Bikes group. And I loved how Cordelia was the master of writing the super long run-on sentences and how Steve recognized that immediately. I also tend to write long run-on sentences and cringe when I do, but now that Cordelia has popularized it, I’ll continue to do so proudly!

This was really a seriously funny, entertaining book! I laughed many, many times. I loved the supporting cast of characters, and the seemingly random coincidences that occurred. And mostly, I loved Gregory! But he also scares the shit out of me at the same time. It might be time to go buy a ranch off the grid, like Julie did…

For all the readers who have attended book signings, you’ll get a kick out of this story. And for those who have yet to enjoy the experience, I hope you get to attend one soon!

Please note: this is my review of the unabridged book but with the Audiobook narration as well. If you are only interested in the print/ebook opinion, just ignore anything specifically referencing this Audiobook narration.

When I think of a Huss/McClain book, I tend to think of dark, heavy romance with plot twists and lots of major (often life threatening) drama the MCs have to overcome to reach their HEA or HFN.
So, The Ro Bro was such a wonderful surprise!
Although I do love a good suspenseful romance and sometimes a dark, twisted MMC who overcomes his inner demons to win over the MFC, it is nice to immerse yourself with characters who aren't facing life and death once in a while.

After reading many of the authors' other work, I know they are both exceptionally talented, but it really shines with the inner monolog written for Cordelia.
Her inner musings may not be for everyone, but I found them to show the variety and depth of character building, showcasing that these authors aren't just relegated to writing one style of MFC. I truly felt connected to Cordelia in a way that I haven't with another character in a long time. (And I've read about 600 books over the last 4 years so, yeah.)
While I don't have much in common with the MFC, the way she's portrayed is refreshingly unique.

As for Steve, he's the everyday Knight in Shining Armor we all want. Can't say more without spoilers.

Narration was spot on, as always.
I saw another review mention they thought the male narrator (McClain) was over the top but IMO, it was perfect for Steve.
I don't like the Narration to be flat and monotonous so the more passion and excitement you can add to the audio experience, the better.

Thank you for writing this book and bringing it to Audio. It was a joy to escape for a little while with The Ro Bro ❤️

Review written with sister/book buddy. This book clearly demonstrates the difference between voice acting and narrating. Outstanding performances! The high energy level suited the 'tongue-in-cheek' hyped-up-at-a-convention tone of the story. Narrators: Jonathan McClain (co-author + narrator), Julia Whelan, Anne Pepperidge.

Johnathan McClain is a great writer and actor. Unfortunately, his voice goes higher with excitement, and became a problem. My ears needed audio breaks, although I was thoroughly enjoying the story. By manipulating the audio app, I brought the voice a little lower in range. (I've also had to do this with his previous narrations, but always appreciate his talent.)

Things I liked: the humor throughout, the appreciation of language, the quasi-experience of a book convention, the romance, the loyalty, the friendships, the glimpses of life as a writer, the writing and publishing aspects, the (hopefully) caricature of the vindictive author...wondering who...

Special mentions:
1. Loved the third person POV. Not often seen in my experience. Great enhancement, used well...enough to be a treat, yet not overdone.
2. AI as a character. You have to be careful with this, because it's scary IRL. The things he did to the 'bad guy' in regard to reaching into bank accounts are now happening, fortunately (?) not yet by AI, but unfortunately, not just to fictional characters.

End of book s*it--I always enjoy hearing both author's commentaries after the end of their books. Funny thing, because I always forget they do this, then am so excited when I remember. Here's my thing: I love their books, am sorry they're ending, then find the happy reprieve of a message from the authors. I hope they'll continue this tradition.

Summary: 5 stars aren't enough!!! I highly recommend The Ro Bro, and agree with their comments about choosing this title.

Easy five stars. If you read a RomCom this year, make sure it’s The Ro Bro.

This was such a fun, fictional insight into romance. Reminiscent of many a quiet book chat, I loved Cordy and Steve’s story.

Where do I start? From page one the scenario was fun, behind the scene book gossip. I rarely read RomCom, but this was perfectly executed with impeccable timing.

“All around me is a kind of heady, vertiginous bonhomie that attends the gossamer haze of unqualified acceptance.”

The veneer of romance novels is a fun escape for readers and authors alike. The witty banter was spot on. The characters were well developed, adult, and the mmc, cocky enough to keep me smiling throughout.

Cordelia, the unprepared, overly naive ingénue, accepting her first signing event was hilarious. Not only did Cordy attend, she met her idol, the Queen of romance—perfection.

“No. I’m jealous of writers who write their story, and not the story they’re told to write.”

Quotes such as this, in stereotypical author situations, kept me giggling and highlighting. Pure gold.

Between reader rants, a nod to another series, an effulgence (this has to trend), and ‘fertile gardens’, 😂 I don’t think I wiped the grin off my face at all.

I enjoyed the combination of authors immensely. I suspect it’s the difference between a mature and well established writing style, versus the average work flooding the market.

This felt like I was sitting in a gossipy chat with friends over coffee as they threw in the next theory on Romancelandia.

Thank goodness it didn’t include the obligatory, rushed HEA we usually see in romance books.

I loved everything about The Ro Bro.

I was hooked from the first chapter! This is truly one of the best rom-com books I have ever read and I have read more than my fair share.

I, myself have not been to a book convention. I hope to attend one someday. I think all of us readers just got a behind-the-scenes view of what goes on with the authors.

I LOVE Cordelia! I can feel some of her emotions. My favorite was "And I don't think that's just something I tell myself on the days I can't get out of bed because the world outside seems too big to deal with." I can relate to that.

Anyways, Cordelia is just an amazing character. I love that she is unsure of herself, but has an aMAYzing support system. I love that she speaks her mind and finds her true voice.

Steve....My husband's name is Steve so this made me love the book a little bit more. Everyone needs a Steve in their lives at some point. He is the type to give you the shirt off his back to help you. Help you navigate through unknown waters. Just an all-around great person.

I LMAO at Leslie/Raylen. I think she got everything she deserved and then some. Her ending is just PERFECT!!

We have all been hearing about AI lately and this book just reminded me why I should be scared a little of it. But honestly, I would LOVE to have my own Gregory.

I am trying very, very hard not to give away spoilers, so my review might not make much sense to you now, but when you read the book all this will make sense.

I don't know if this book is a stand-alone or not. I would love to hear Sheila's story. I think a series could be made out of her story.

Read this book! You will not be disappointed. I promise.

JA Huss and Johnathan McLain aren't known for writing light-hearted rom coms which makes this book unique and fun for their fans and others. I know these two had to have timed the release of this book to occur right before the (IRL) largest romance convention, Book Bonanza, kicks off!
Our heroine, Cordelia, pen name Cynthia Lear, is a new romance author who's given the opportunity to attend the Sin With Us (SWU) Romance Convention. When she arrives in Las Vegas, she realizes her fortuitous signing table will be right behind the author known as SS, who also happens to be the sponsor of the event. She meets our Hero, Steve, who instantly befriends her and helps her get into the sold-out convention hotel.
There are several things that make this story a fun and unique read. First, it's written by two authors who write well together. The nuances of their friendship really come out in this book (start watching at the 12 minute mark of their FB Live, and you'll understand better what I mean, https://fb.watch/lhYmiWH9r8/). Second, some of the shenanigans that happen at the SWU convention mirror things that have happened in real life (they won't confirm which events were fact vs. fiction!) Third, it was fun to try and figure out the real life authors they modeled their characters after. Fourth, it was an easy, FUN story to just read and enjoy without having to worry about a "twisty whodunit" or a "WTF just happened" scenario which is usually the modus operandi with these two! Thank you, Julie and Johnathan for writing this for us!

Hilarity and Insight at an Author Conference!!

I usually have an “ah-ha” moment when authors write about authors. There is no exception here. Cordelia is a newer author, who gets to attend a n author conference due to a cancellation, and a personal selection by Steve. Steve is the author “SS” running the conference. But his twin sister is the “face” of “SS”, creating some interesting situations.

This is a terrific read. You have “Nile” rankings (instead of you know who) and Boom calls. Much play on words, as most characters are author.

The cast includes’ that author’ who causes drama, and blames everyone but themselves for their drop in the rankings. Parents who want you to quit mooching off your sister, though you are the one who hires her. Standard “rules” of romance, versus writing your muse. OCD and anxiety behaviors. Readers expectations; If you serve the best steak in the world, but run a candy shop – someone will be disappointed. What to call a group of readers.

An added “under the radar” layer of complexity which provides a delightful Wishmaker app and behind-the-scenes helpers at the convention/hotel.

I’ve not been to an author conference, but associate with enough authors to realize this is probably closer to fact than fiction. Delivered in a delightful, entertaining, romantic and with the understanding that being an author may only be 50% writing.

OMG hilarious!

This was a great collaboration between JA Huss and Jonathan McClain. New romance author Cordelia is trying to make it in Romancelandia (loved this word!), and she gets invited to the BIGGEST signing event of the year – Sin With Us- which is hosted by the #1 romance author in the world… SS. The author just goes by their initials, SS, but everyone knows it stands for Essie Smith. Essie and her brother Steve are the ones who host the event in Vegas every year, and this year she is going! What everyone doesn’t know is that Steve is actually REALLY SS the author and that he has his sister be the face. He tried to be a Sci-Fi author and didn’t do well and after seeing how well romance was doing tried his hand at it…mostly as a joke. Until he hit it BIG. Now 10 years later, he is living his best life, except only a handful of people even know that its him writing the books. He was excited to meet Cordelia after reading one of her books and immediately is interested in her. They have a pseudo quick romance of sorts but there is another author who has it in for SS. She is doing whatever she can to get back at the twins. And some of the things that happen to her are HILARIOUS!

Anyways, this book was phenomenal and I laughed so many times! Definitely a must read!

I received an ARC for my honest review!

Cordelia, who writes as Cynthia Lear, gets a last-minute invite to the annual romance book convention run by Steve Smith and his twin sister, Essie. For years, Steve has kept his identity as S. S. Smith under wraps, letting Essie pretend to be the famous author while he stays behind the scenes. Cordelia, like everyone else, has no clue about the charade. When she meets Steve, they fall in to insta-lust, barely knowing each other. Meanwhile, Leslie, an author who’s been convinced for years that Essie ripped off her ideas, stirs up fresh drama at this year’s event.

The audiobook’s male narration was often goofy and annoying, which didn’t help an already frustrating story. I hate books about books—romance authors writing about writing romance always feels like lazy storytelling. It’s like they want sympathy or validation for the tropes they use, and this book leaned hard into self-awareness instead of just telling a good story. The whole thing felt superficial—when romance authors try to live a romance, they overcorrect, trying to avoid tropes while still justifying them. It didn’t even read like a romance, more like something the authors wrote for themselves as catharsis.

I didn’t like the hero. The heroine was actually pretty good, which is rare for me to like the FMC but not the MMC. Anyway, no. Not a fan.

One of the funniest books I’ve ever read!

While JA Huss is the master of twisted plots, the McClain/Huss duo brings the house down with this rom com. Get ready for authors gone wild! Rom Com convention galore, Booktokers (is that even a thing?), narrators hiding on plain sight and much more.

Here goes the storyline: SS, a romance book author, organizes every year what it’s called the Sin with Us convention (Book Bonanza anyone?). This year they (you need to read the book to understand this reference here) invited an up and coming author and by mistake also invited a disgraced author, one who was out to get SS for allegedly stealing her work. Add to this mix: secret identities, dream dates, miscommunications and you come out with The Ro Bro, a funny an amazing book that It gives us a glimpse into what it is to be a romantic fiction writer, the struggles, the inspiration, the drama, the comradeship among authors and so much more.

I can’t even put this book into a category. It’s wild, it’s crazy, it’s convoluted, it’s romantic,it’s funny, it’s twisted in a cute kind of way and above all and again, it’s perfect. That’s it! This Book is the perfect rom com. Period.

JA Huss and Johnathan McClain should be declared the king and queen of Rom Com. I hope they keep on writing together because they sure know how to deliver unforgettable stories.

different and great

This book was a very different kind of romance, but I thought it was great. I personally loved the character of Cordelia - insecure, anti-social, super quirky, lovable, creative, but living as a recluse. Her thought patterns and stream of consciousness ramblings were very entertaining. Not the usual heroine of the story! Then enters Steve - creative, thoughtful, insecure about his true identity, generous, but living a false life. I really liked both characters. The setting at the book convention was quite entertaining too. I’ve never been to one of those (but was tempted). Basic plot: Steve is top romance author but he pretends to be the assistant while his sister pretends to be the actual author. They are putting on a large, multi-day romance book signing convention. Cordelia is an unknown author just getting started who is invited to attend. Steve and Cordelia meet and it’s insta-attraction. But there are jealous authors who want to sabotage their success and create havoc and turn the reader world against them. Glad I read this and now I want to check out some other collaborations by this duo.

5 Stars!

This book was wildly entertaining and a pure pleasure to listen to. Here we follow Steve Smith, a romance author who writes under the pen name S.S., and the up-and-coming writer who writes under the name Cynthia Lear. In addition to writing, Steve organizes a romance convention, which is where Steve and Cynthia meet and fall for each other.

The writing of this book was phenomenal. The dialog was fast-paced, and the vocabulary used by Steve and Cynthia was super fun (lots of words that I learned for the SATs but don't often encounter in romance books). Honestly, I didn't realize that I needed more highbrow banter in my audiobooks! Also, this book is laugh-out-loud funny, and the narration is amazing! I HIGHLY recommend listening to this book (which I believe is only available from Audible). Also, the characters are really well-developed, and their chemistry is spicy. The side characters are fantastic. Frankly, I feel like this book might have been written with me in mind (in which case, I would like to sincerely thank the authors!). Despite how personally invested I am, I think that EVERYONE should listen to this book!

The Ro Bro Review

Another hilarious rom com from JA Huss and Jonathan McClain!

If you have ever read a Huss/McClain RomCom before, you know they are already the best Rom-Coms you can find, and The Ro Bro lives up to the rest! If you haven’t read a Huss/McClain Rom-Com before, what the heck are you waiting for?!

The Ro Bro is a fun, quick, summer read - but just because it’s fun doesn’t mean you’re not transported right into the story just like in all Huss/McClain books. Despite never having gone to a signing myself, I felt like I was right there at the convention, transported to Vegas, maybe even to the Siegel Suites for a minute *shudder*.

Take this book with your to the pool, the beach, or on vacation and relax and have a good laugh reading The Ro Bro. If you can’t get to any of those places, start reading or pop in an earbud and at least make your way to Vegas through the words of this fantastic story!

I can’t wait for another Huss/McClain book!

PS - I started another read through with the audiobook version and *CHEFS KISS* -impeccable audio!

The Ro Bro is a kick-in-the-pants read from writing duo J.A. Huss and Johnathan McClain. I haven’t been to a book signing event since before the pandemic, and reading Ro Bro made me miss the action, the authors, the excitement. There were a few little literary eggs for long time fans of the authors and anyone following indie authors on social media.

Steve, Essie, Mike, Cordelia and Shirley are fabulous antagonists in this story, and Leslie is an over-the-top, can’t-tell-if-I-hate-her-or-feel-sorry-for-her character. They all add fun and drama to the story. The romance and friendships are delightful. The storyline is lighthearted. I felt both authors in this book, and their writing blended together perfectly.

A must read for lovers of romance and especially followers of indie romance authors.

4-4.5 stars

Just what I needed!

I have been a JA Huss fan for a long time, well since almost the beginning of her writing romance. I started Tragic and just got hooked and had to read ANYTHING she wrote. I loved it all and counted down the days until her next book came out! My husband had a stroke in 2020 and he has not been able to work so I had to get a second job plus take care of him and our boys so I quit having time or money for reading so I have not been able to read any of her books lately, but this week I saw an add for a month of free kindle unlimited and decided I would find a book to read over the weekend because I FINALLY had TWO days off in a row from both of my jobs. I have missed so many of her releases, but most of them are series so I decided I would pick this one since it was a stand alone. I am so glad I did!! It was so fun and all the little easter eggs made me feel like coming home!!

Where to start? A Romcom by my favorite duo, yep, and they delivered! This book will make you laugh and deliver all the signature Huss/McClain character building and depth and deeper storyline.I love that no matter what they write, it’s never going to be superficial - I’m always going to come away satisfied and feeling like I’ve just met knew friends - their characters are so well developed that they feel real. This book is a hilarious journey through a book convention (I’ve never been to one of the bigger book signings) but I’ve definitely heard about all the shenanigans- it’s a bucket list item for me! I fell in love with Cordelia and Steve and all of the supporting characters and all of their shenanigans! I absolutely adored all of the Huss/McClain Easter Eggs - so much fun all the way around.

If this book didn’t make me want to attend a book con/signing for the first time, I don’t know what would! Do these things/events really happen?! I’d love to know for myself!
This story made me have such a smile on my face throughout it and I loved it right through to the very end. Steve and Cordelia were just so cute together and they just seemed to be perfect. I loved the personal journey they both went through but especially Cordelia and how much she grew by the end of the book. I did think their happenings together evolved very quickly but I did enjoy the chemistry they both shared with each other.
I enjoyed all the drama, with some very hilarious scenes with these characters and definitely the scenes towards the end too. I’d love to know if these were based on real people/events that have happened!
A very fun and entertaining read by Huss and McClain.

The Ro Bro is a refreshingly fun, and enjoyable read with an amazing and entertaining storyline, and a great lineup of characters, that complement our star couple (Cynthia and Steve) and their hilarious journey..

I'm not going into detail because you already have enough of that from previous reviews, and I hate to spoil this fantastic read with extra comments. Just know one thing, this story is about something we all love, and have in comment as in books, writers, pen names, fans, signings, and everything that has to do in this exciting book world and could really happen to you, right?

I absolutely loved and enjoyed every minute of this hilarious read, and highly recommend that you enjoy this amazing journey as well.
