Rate this book
World-renowned endocrinologist and author of the half million-copy bestseller, The Thyroid Solution, now presents his proven program for re-setting sluggish metabolisms to lose weight, improve thyroid wellness, and increase overall well-being.Is your thyroid making you fat? Calorie restrictions and dieting alone can’t fix metabolic problems to help you lose weight if you have a sluggish thyroid or slow metabolism. You need a weight-loss program that includes a healthy, hormone-friendly eating plan that will boost your metabolism, let you shed the extra weight, and help you keep it off. Dr. Arem has treated thousands of patients successfully for weight loss and, now for the first time in The Thyroid Solution Diet, makes available to the public his comprehensive diet plan. With it, you will lose weight, look better, and feel better physically and mentally.

A weight problem is as serious as cancer and heart disease. The Thyroid Solution Diet offers a refined and perfected Mediterranean diet that is higher in metabolism- boosting proteins, high in fiber, and low in high-glycemic index foods. It provides specific recommendations of food combinations to eat at each meal—and foods to avoid—and the right kind of supplements to take to boost your metabolism and reverse multiple hormonal imbalances. Based on extensive medical research, The Thyroid Solution Diet is by far the most well-balanced diet program put forward so far by a medical doctor. No other book available on thyroid, diet, and weight loss is written by a specialist with Dr. Arem’s expertise and specific know-how. And this unique program is effective for weight loss, even if your thyroid function is normal.

I was hoping this book would help me to guide my diet to support my thyroid and improve hypothyroidism. While it has a wealth of information about metabolism and suggestions on what to eat when, it is heavily centered on eating protein, lots of protein. While I'm not a vegetarian, I do not eat a lot of meat and I'm not convinced that eating so much meat and eggs is that great for you. Might be OK if you consume locally grass-fed beef or pastured chickens but that would be too expensive to do so three times a day! Arem does not offer alternatives to those that do not eat a lot of meat and so I do not find this book all that useful. In addition, while he goes into much depth about metabolism, he does not discuss the immune system. The majority of people with hypothyroidism have Hashimoto's, an autoimmune condition. With this condition, the problem is not the thyroid but that the autoimmune system is attacking either the thyroid or the enzymes involved in processing of the hormones. There is only a very brief discussion of Hashimoto's in the book when I think it should be a much larger topic as it is so important since such a huge proportion of people with hypothyroidism have this condition. It's important to consider removing gluten if you have Hashimoto's as the molecular structure of gluten resembles the thyroid and so it may activate the immune system and attack the thyroid as well as the gluten. While Arem's first part of the diet removes all grains, he adds them back in the second part of the diet and his staple bread is made with wheat flour. I'm sure that his diet would help reduce the inflammatory response as sugar is highly responsible for this too and this diet does not allow added sugars, but I wonder if high amounts of animal protein also induce inflammation (as seen in animal studies and some indication in The China Study). I do like his tables of foods to eat and the specific eating plans as well as some of the recipes. There are also pictures of specific exercises which is great, although I wish they were all things I could do at home without special equipment. And I like his focus on whole health, including reducing stress, increasing sleep and exercise and changing way of eating. I will be trying to make sure I consume more carbohydrates early in the day and more protein in the evening as this helps improve sleep.

I honestly don't think I would have understood half the science in this book if it weren't so well and clearly written. He's got this one bit about antioxidants. I mean, of course I'd heard of them, and that they're good for you, but I didn't truly understand what they do for your body until I read this. And it's great, because after every explanation, he has lists of foods that contain what he's talking about, so it's easy to implement as well!

The first half of the book is purely the science of the diet. Then the second half is all diet and exercise, with amazing recipes, and great workout tips that are easy for an average person to do. These aren't P90X exercises, anybody can do them and benefit. and the photo demonstrations are great!

Not exactly or your average diet book reader, but of you really want to delve deeply into some causes of slow metabolism, do give it a try.

As an overweight woman, I never thought about the impact that hormones, testosterone in particular could be having on my body.

This book is so full of information, stuff I never even thought about. This is so much more than a simple diet book. Don't let the title mislead you, this isn't a diet, it's a life change!

This is a non-diabetic diet that is great for us diabetics! I was skeptical when my Aunt gave me this book. Being diabetic, it's hard to find diet plans that work, but this one has real science behind it, explaining every step of the way why I should be eating what I'm eating, and why as a diabetic, it's better for me.

Thanks Dr. Arem!

I'd held off on reading this for some time, waiting to see others' reactions. I wish I hadn't waited. The advice is quite good, "doable," and especially appropriate for those of us with thyroid issues AND food sensitivities/allergies. As with most thyroid-related books, the information tilts toward hypothyroid patients. However, the diet is suitable for hyper-T patients.

I'm pretty tired of diet books telling me what to eat, with a vague explanation of "it's good for you." This book actually breaks down, in easy to undestand writing, what foods are good and bad for you, the science of what they do to your body, and excercises to do to remain healthy.

Very Informative and easy to read. There is a lot of filler but it serves pretty well to hep focus you on the topic. I tried his detox smoothie and despite not liking grapefruit, I really like this. I have been trying to follow his advice and have found it to really work.

I got this book with the plan to get some healthy recipes out of it. I think the book had some good ideas, but it is too strict for what I'm willing to do. I liked her theories about what to eat and when. I will probably try some of her stuff, but I'm not willing to commit to the whole thing.

This is more than a diet book, it actually takes the time to explain the why and the how of why the diet works. A great book for those with and without thyroid issues!

To be brutally honest, I'm an older woman, going through menopause. This book has a wealth of information about how foods and the thyroid effect people in my position.

Filled with VERY helpful information. I have dealt with Hashimoto’s Disease for years and have found Dr. Arem’s books incredibly helpful!
I removed one star because, by its nature, it’s not a book that a wide audience would find interesting.
I removed a second star because the diet seems rather complicated...at first - It is actually rather simple, but Dr. Arem gives the reader tons of information. Almost ALL of it is helpful. I have found myself reading over several sections so often that I have marked them with “post it’s” so I can have easy access to them.
I’m on day 3 of the program and I am no longer craving sugar!!! That’s what the Doctor said would happen! So far so good!!!

Pretty good...centers more around the issue of metabolism and weight control rather than healing the thyroid with food.
