March Story, Vol. 4

Rate this book
Among the quiet villages and towns of 18th century Europe, demons known as the Ill hide within the most beautiful works of art, sparked to life by the torment of their creators. Attracted by their jewel-like allure, the unwary find themselves possessed by the Ill and driven to horrific acts of violence. Only the hunters of the Ciste Vihad can dispel the Ill. The Ill prey upon human feelings, using them as both a lure and a weapon. March must conceal her feelings for Rodin lest the Ill that lies inside her should awaken and destroy her. When Rodin receives an invitation to a fancy dress ball, March surreptitiously tags along. The gala has also attracted a devilish guest who thirsts for the blood of the young maidens in attendance. March faces her terrifying past once again, and this time all of her friends are in danger!

OH. MY. RA.

THAT ENDING.

SO.
MUCH.
RAGE.

Okay, first things first... remember last volume's review how I complained about the Ill all being good... well, THANK YOU KIM HYUNG-MIN!! Evil, bad, terrible Ill are back with amazingly awesome artwork to make it even more fantastic!! I was super happy to see an Ill March previously defeated back!

Now, that being said

OH MY GOD WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THAT CLIFFHANGER ENDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, every volume ends with everything pretty much wrapped up... so should I expect the last available volume for reading in the US to do the same... OH NO! Instead, there was a gigantic cliffhanger that made my jaw drop to the floor! AND NOW I HAVE TO WAIT FOR WHO KNOWS HOW LONG TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS!!!!!!!!!!

Besides my anger and annoyance at that, I absolutely LOVED this volume! Things really picked up and were getting intense and interesting. But now the wait is going to be tortuous!! And there isn't a Wikipedia page for this series to let me know how many more manhwa there are or if the series is done in Korea... so I have no idea!! AAAAAH THE AGONY!!! This wait is gonna be unbearable!

Took awhile for me to get around and read this one. But despite the usual blood and gore this series displays there are some heart felt moments that keep you coming back for more. I have no idea when there releasing book 5 but I can't wait to read it to tie up some loose ends.

Oooh, this is exactly what I want more of!

Janjaghee (the blood-obsessed Ill who murdered March's sister and wore her face) makes a reappearance. Now, rather than having peasants bring sacrifices to her evil castle, she's taking her show on the road with the Cirque du Rouge that gives one fantastic performance and then kidnaps every young woman who watched it. The scary clowns are both terrifying and hilarious (looking at you, assassin who rode his unicycle in pursuit of Belma).

Belma and Rodin both get excellent opportunities to shine. I adore Belma's musclehead demeanor, but he's finally able to demonstrate his skills in this volume and those muscles are NOT just for show. (Also, we saw the origins of his scarecrow and it is sad!) Rodin also shows off just how cool he is by knocking out pretty much the entire pursuit of evil circus people with a singular nerve potion and a well-placed poison needle. What exactly is his story? Where did he learn to do this?!

Then, there's an extra chapter where Lawrence finally confesses his feelings to Jake and is turned down in the nicest way possible. Lawrence is such a sweetheart, I'm actually rooting for the guy.

I'm dying to know how this is all going to end. I can't believe the next volume is the last one. 5/5

Between the return of the copious blood and gore, and the fact that March spends about half of this book incapacitated or unconscious, it was hard to see this volume as a step forward. The big bad from volume 1 is back - how is unclear, but I'm willing to be patient and await a proper explanation in volume 5 - and there's been a bit more character development, but things haven't moved in quite the way I was hoping. Since we are apparently all in on the naked-girls-bleeding-on-wires aesthetic, let's hope volume 5 pulls out something really remarkable.

4.5/5 stars!

I'm a volume behind (I still have to read volume 3), but the great thing about "March Story" as a series is that for the most part, one can dive right in at any time in any volume and still manage to understand what's going on. This volume is mainly based off of the tale of Countess Bathory, and retells her story with a ball, the blood of virgins, and March, hunting her down. With absolutely gorgeous, over-the-top eye-popping art, this volume in the series just cannot be missed. Warning: there are spoilers for this volume involved, so you've been warned.

Along with this retelling of the gruesome tale of a real-life woman, we also get more on March's origins - how her family was murdered by the Ill (specifically, who did it), and how she gained her abilities as apart of the Ciste Vihad. This is a pivotal volume if you want to know more about March (and Lady Janjaghee, the retold version of Bathory) and how she came to be involved with the Ill-hunting organization. While in volume one we get a short briefing on her activities and abilities with fighting the Ill, we don't get the full story. Until now. There's a lot of lies and betrayal involved, and I have to say, that Kim really knows how to weave a story - especially involving a real life character. Excellent work here.

There's also the cause-effect relationship between Janjaghee and March here that we've never seen before - apparently, Janjaghee, after murdering March's family, didn't get off very lightly at all. Apparently even she has nightmares of March, just as March has nightmares of her. Janjaghee was supposedly murdered by March's Ill Thorns, but that's all moot, now that she's joined the Cirque du Rouge in order to keep feeding the Ill inside of her with virgins' blood. This volume is definitely not one for the squeamish - the scenes where Janjaghee takes her victims are pretty gruesome, but the art is breathtakingly gorgeous. Kim has truly done a beautiful job here.

We also have March's identity as a girl outed to Belma, who comes to save her at the last minute, and I can't say I enjoyed watching March, who's one of the strongest manga/manwha heroines I've had the pleasure of reading about, having to get saved. But I guess that happens sometimes, right? Nevertheless, all in all, I really enjoyed this volume, even with my nitpicks aside.

As I haven't read the original, I can't really comment on how faithful the translation is. However, some of the localization changes did make me cringe ("Dream on, Pee-Wee!" was one of them), and I kind of wish that they'd nixed that in the final edit (and since this is an ARC copy, hopefully they will before final publication).

Final verdict? If you've read the other volumes in this series, you simply must continue your journey with March, Jake, Belma, and the rest. If you're new, you can dive in here, and then backtrack if you have to. "March Story: Volume 4" will be out from Viz in North America on October 16, 2012, so be sure to check it out then! It's highly recommended, and one of my favorite series.

This is a wonderful story. In the words and pictures of this book, a magical world is weaved, and by reading it, you become a part of this world.

March wants everyone to believe she's a boy. But, through a difficult situation, the truth is revealed to Belma. Belma was sent to rescue her from Mistress Janjaghee.
Mistress Janjaghee is a lonely woman, who uses the blood of fair maidens to dry her white dress a beautiful crimson. In order to have a never ending supply of maidens, she runs a circus, where she hypnotizes them and entices them to come back to her.
March's sister, Raspberry, has been killed, and she on a mission to avenger her sister's death. In this way, she unfortunately runs across Mistress Janjaghee on the wrong side of her blood-releasing threads with no way out.
That's when Belma comes an rescues her. His weapon is a scarecrow, and March falls into the memory of the scarecrow, so we get Belma's backstory there. Belma takes March back to her beloved Rodin's shop, but doesn't reveal her secret. But, Belma is now in love with her.
In the end, Janjaghee's minions come to Rodin's shop, but he follows them to Janjaghee's lair. There, he meets her after killing her servant, and she reveals March's secret to him, and he is shocked.
I would definitely read other volumes of this series. I loved it.

This is an excellent work! The art is beautiful, the story unpredictable. It's gorey, it's dark but it has a light of hope. The entire series kept me interested and the plot twist around volume 3 made me double take! I had to re-read a bit to find the hints. Its just excellent.

Anyone into horror, mystery, romance, self-discovery, tragedy and self-acceptance, will love this.

As the penultimate volume in the series this one is racing to set up the final act of the series and so far it's all looking to be a pretty good finale to this, unfortunately short, series. We get Belma's backstory in this one and the return of one of our villains.
