I made a friend with a manga blogger when she criticized Nanami's character in Kamisama Kiss. She felt that Nanami's character had not grown, that there was no direction for the story, and that the relationship between Nananmi and Tomoe had fallen into a predictable holding pattern. I made my case to her that it was the opposite of what she argued, and while I probably didn't change her perception much of the story, it made me more aware of what she found concerning in this series.

Which is why when I see Nanami continue to grow as a kami, I can't help but feel a little vindicated in my position. Nanami still feels inadequate, and she has a lot to learn about the world of the ayakashi, but she holds her own. Time after time, Tomoe dashes in to "save" her only to find that she has saved herself without needing his aid, this being the case yet again in volume 11.

Nanami really shines in this volume. After Mizuki's back story, and most recently, Kurama's back story, we finally get to learn about Nanami's history. For me, it served to make her character even more endearing, if that's possible. If I had one real concern with this series, it was that I wasn't really sure of what made Nanami Nanami. That concern has been laid to rest in the first three chapters of this volume. It even made me want to cry at one point. Aw.

Plot is moving along nicely. While we do have interlude chapters that develop the characters, we are also seeing things slowly come together with the over-arching plot with Akura-Oh. The only character whose background still holds a lot of mystery is Tomoe's, but it's obvious it's integrated fully with the over-arching plot that that will come in time.

I absolutely love this series. Smart writing, solid artwork, delightful characters, hilarious comedy (ah, Mizuki, I love you!), and a sweet romance slowly developing is what I live for when it comes to shoujo series. Add some beautiful Japanese folklore, and it's even better. Highly recommended.

I actually finished this volume on Friday, the day I started, but I was too caught up in the excitement of the day to leave a review. I was getting my hair braided and then my library threw our summer block party and everything went crazy.

Anyways, this has been my favorite volume thus far. I love Nanami so much and her backstory is absolutely amazing. Watching Tomoe's respect for her grow as he falls deeper in love is a real treat.

I know I say it at the end of every review, but I actually am going to finish the next volume I have checked out! This time, I'm at work so I have a good chance of succeeding, I think. It's a slow day. I don't have much to do.

The series has become more somber in this volume. As is common with such shoujo mangas, the heroine amasses a few more handsome and strong male admirers. But that is not the point. I am messed up by how cute Nanami is shown as a kid. Plus dealing with a lousy father and loving but dying mother? Too much, too much! So to keep my heart from breaking, I focus only on the cute stuff.

No kocham. 4,65/5⭐

Seeing Nanami's past was cool, especially since we don't see it often. It defo explained more of why she is the way she is.

Julietta Suzuki has been on a roll as I really enjoy this volume as well. While it doesn't move the story forward, it offers some insight into Nanami. Bittersweet and tender.

Spoilers from the 3rd paragraph and onwards!

I wasn't expecting anything outstanding, but I'm glad that there's some consistency in Tomoe's character development (being more honest with his feelings, letting go of his instinct to protect Nanami at all costs, etc). I've seriously missed Akura-ou who hasn't been seen since Volume 7 (!), as he ties into Tomoe's mysterious past I can't wait to see more of him.

If there's one thing that the manga is doing much more successfully than the anime, it's showing WHY Tomoe likes Nanami and WHAT he likes about her. We see that he is in awe of her kindness, generosity and perseverance to succeed and help others. She is a Kami through and through.

But, I find that these are such flimsy, and boring traits to like about Nanami. She's a funny and street smart character who's constantly thinking about others before herself. It wasn't very clear what Tomoe in little Nanami in the flashback/ dream sequence, just that through seeing her childhood, he's seeing her in a different light. Especially because this is the scene where he basically confesses his feelings, this could easily be misinterpreted as he loves her because he pities her, and she's had a tough childhood therefore she's worthy of his love. From what the writer is attempting to portray, is that Nanami has had a lonely childhood, and in spite of losing her mother, she's held herself together since she was six almost astoundingly well. Tomoe loves Nanami because she never fails to amaze and inspire him to do and be the best person he could possibly be. She's a noble heroine through and through, and Tomoe's initial admiration for Nanami has developed into respect and love for her.

I wish that this was more clearer in the manga, when it comes to Nanami and Tomoe's romance everything does need to be spelled out because the *sighs* and the *longing gazes* is getting tiresome.

There will be SPOILERS in this review!

Well, this volume is a bit of a downgrade. It feels a lot like filler for the most part but there are definitely some cute and interesting things about it.

The first plotline of this volume is Nanami and the gang going to see a toshigami because he has some ofuda or something (frankly I don’t remember the reason). I actually really liked this plotline because we finally get to explore Nanami’s character a little. We see a glimpse of her past and what her parents were like. It’s also cute to see how she instantly trusts Tomoe (because he’s great) and runs away from Mizuki (because he is creepy). Also there’s a dragon that is just really cute and entertaining.

We also get some side story about Kirihito (or rather Akura) and how he is using some mirror that will help him get his body back. I liked how he got mad that Tomoe fell in love with a human girl but also how he broke the mirror because his fake mom came to his room. It makes me think that he has some humanity in him that can still bloom in the future.

And then we have Nanami following Tomoe to that other world and that plotline is also cute. I love how Nanami finally finds out how Tomoe feels about her, but it’s also nice to see her finally be competent in her abilities and defeating the guys who tried to kidnap her.

Overall, this was a cute volume with a lot of memorable moments but it’s pretty much just build-up for something greater. I’m giving this volume 4 stars and I hope we get more Nanami and Tomoe moments soon (and also learn more about Tomoe’s past).

Well this took me a long time to read, but that was because I got sick and fell into a reading slump.

Actual rating is more like 3.2 because the beginning was good but the middle was meh, and the end was...eh.

We finally get a little bit of backstory on Nanami. Thank goodness, because once again I am getting bored of this series. How is it we learn Mizuki, Kurama, and a bit of Tomoe back story before we even touch on Nanami? Who knows. Only took 11 volumes I guess. How long is this series? 25? hmm...

The relationship between Nanami and Tomoe has entered another holding pattern. The only development is the Nanami is becoming more competent as a developing kami. "traffic safety" y'all. lol Literally the best part of the book, btw.

Also, the end of the volume starts to move forward the 'complication' before the marriage of the water/fish/whatever kami and her mortal lover.

Anyhow, if you like Nanami, rather then feeling rather indifferent about her on the whole, you'll love this volume. Art is still nice. I'm just getting tired of the jerky flow of the series I think.

I'm a huge fan of the Kamisama Kiss anime and I decided to read the manga because I suspected that it might end differently than does the show. I borrowed volumes 11 to 14 from the library. There are some differences. For one thing, they changed the zodiac for the new year from the manga to the show to reflect the actual zodiac at the time the show aired, which changes the story somewhat, though not the overall plot. Also, there's a segment in the manga about the yokai market that never made it into the show, which is a shame, because it allows us to see more of Nanami's bravery and ingenuity as opposed to her relying on Tomoe to help her. It also gives us more insight into what Tomoe really thinks about her. I understand that it was probably removed from the show because it breaks up the continuity of the rest of the volume, but it was nice to see. I thoroughly enjoyed this volume and I definitely want to read the others now!

Nanami: I won't get married
Tomoe: 👁👁
Nanami: I definitely won't get married. Probably.
Tomoe: ☹

Nanami: *didn't wear any shoes after following Tomoe to the other world*
Tomoe: 😤😤😡💢😡😠
Also Tomoe: Here wear my shoes

Gosh this volume is so precious. Nanami got stuck in her child body while she, Tomoe and Mizuki were venturing to the zodiac world, thus exposing her childhood memories. It's sad to see how much Nanami had suffered, but it helped Tomoe to learn more about her and now he would treat her gentler. Sometimes. Most of the time he's still grumpy though.

But the fact that Tomoe considers Nanami as a pure lovely flower??? BOI IS DEFINITELY WHIPPED BUT TOO EMBARRASSED TO ADMIT IT 💖💖💖😃

This volume also reveals a bit about Kirihito, which I really appreciate because I'm so curious about his past with Tomoe. Kirihito may seem inhumane, but I have a feeling that despite his cold attitude, he actually cares about the woman he calls "mother"?

THE GOOD

Nanami: I had never realized we knew so little about Nanami's past until this volume, where we get to learn quite a bit about her sad background. A gambling father who is never there and a sick mother who died when Nanami was very young. And then we get to see Nanami handle herself quite well against some Ayakashi.

Tomoe: Tomoe is slowly beginning to realize that Nanami doesn't always need him to save her and it's kinda fun to watch him struggle with how to express his feelings.

Mizuki; He is adorable.

THE BAD

Kirihito: He's slowly spiraling into madness. This is not good.

The main story didn’t develop much in this volume, instead, it made room for more of an introspective break. Kirihito, Nanami, and a few others were able to develop their feelings a bit more in this volume, but Tomoe was the one who went through the most changes of all. In this particular volume, as a matter of fact, Tomoe seemed to be center stage the majority of the time. His heart and therefore his demeanor is changing, and he’s going through a period wherein he’s learning to understand these feelings, what they mean, and what to do with them. This volume was a very wholesome read and contained a lot of heavy elements.

So after watching the adorable Anime series I had to know what will happen next. And after some research, it showed I should start with vol 11. To be honest, I would’ve loved to read it from vol 1. One day, hopefully.

This volume is mostly covered by the Anime however there are missing pieces for sure. And even while knowing what happens in it, I still enjoyed it a lot.

Also I should say, this is my first Manga ever, and I’m glad I started with this one, very light hearted and easy to read.
