I never believed in the paranormal mainly because I never had any reason to—at least, not until I received a telegram from a grandmother I didn't know existed, inviting me to a small town that was nearly impossible to find, full of shifters and witches that shouldn't be real.
Of course, I didn't know that until after I agreed to visit her in her secluded home.
When I pull into town, I almost regret my impulsive decision to take this trip. Bordered on all sides by rivers and mountains and dense forests, Winter Creek is a trap. Once you get in, it's just as difficult to leave. No one has cars here or internet service, and my own phone is a glorified paperweight as soon as I step off the train.
Speaking of the train... I discover too late that it arrives on its rickety tracks once a week if you're lucky. And, of course, there's the small matter of the town's curse .
Turns out there's a reason why my estranged grandmother finally got in touch with me for the first time in twenty-five years. In Winter's Creek, there's a curse involving a coven of witches, the feral wolf who haunts the dark forest, and a woman from seventy years ago who looks enough like me to convince my grandmother that I'm the only one who can break it at last.
When I refuse, I discover that my grandmother isn't just the head witch of Winter Creek—she's the one responsible for the curse that's kept the town in stasis for the last seventy years. To break it, she's willing to do whatever she has to, including sacrificing me to the big, black wolf that's been lurking in the shadows, watching me since my arrival. Because the beast in the woods is hungry, and I'm the perfect prey... * * * * Prey is the first in a new trilogy featuring Fallon Witt, a human woman who doesn't know anything about the paranormal—until she's thrown headfirst into it when she arrives in a town stopped in time, full of witches and wolf shifters. While partly inspired by Beauty and the Beast, the first book also has elements of Little Red Riding Hood—though, in this series, the big, bad wolf is the hero, and her grandmother is the true danger in the woods of Winter Creek...
Despite the author giving backstory on how gullible the FMC was, I was still not prepared for the amount of stupidity she would reveal of herself. She was just gullible, just down right stupid to information laid out right to her face.
Nah this book is a shit show. It started all good until it got all confusing. The jumping from events was too much and the mixed feelings the protagonist had towards the characters further confused me. I was halfway through the book when I realized that nothing was actually happening.
Why is she so dumb? Seriously words like: coven, mate, and pack don’t give it away? It took way too long to get one minor spicy scene. Also is it just me or is the MC being Bi just a throw away mention?
WARNING! Cliffhanger! That is a level 5/5 on my trauma scale cliffhanger. Fortunately book two is already available and the author does alleviate it a little!
Fallon is a normal, everyday human, with no idea that the supernatural world exists, so although it seems a little too good to be true when the grandmother she never knew existed contacts her, it doesn’t seem particularly dangerous. The journey to Winter Creek introduces her to a whole new world, one where secrets rule and danger lurks around every corner, and where Fallon discovers that she is a pawn in a much bigger game.
It’s a good read, with a fascinating plot, which is carefully and slowly (ridiculously slowly as far as my impatient mind is concerned!), revealed bit by bit. I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of Fallon as the story begins. She’s brash, confident, and not afraid to use her looks to get what she wants. After a while, you begin to realize that it’s only part of her personality, that she’s also a romantic, sensitive, and sometimes she’s most definitely that heroine in the story that does the stupid thing!
The story itself is engrossing, with action, adventure, and a steamy scene or two. The characters take intrigue to the next level, and one or two of them are ones I’d like to throw off of the bridge in the book!
An enjoyable read, this is one the PNR and romantasy fans will enjoy.
So she was adopted she always new but her adopted parents were awesome she works and is content well she would like a hot guy in there some were but hopefully that will happen then one day she is walking home from work and gets shoved then realises she's been cut the one thing she can't stand that makes her want to vomit pass out and freak out is blood especially her own then a man tries to help her if that's not the weirdest stuff she gets home and there's a knock on her door there's an old man with a telegram really he stands there I'm in shock who sends telegrams these day when I work out how to open it its a message from my biological grand ma really after all there's years black no
Fallon is a 25 year old woman who has been orphaned twice - once as an infant when her biological parents were killed and again when her foster mother died five years prior to the current time. She receives a telegram from a previously unknown grandmother who invites her to visit.
Fallon finally lets curiosity get the better of her and decides to meet her grandmother. It’s a somewhat arduous journey with an unusual destination offering no clue as to how to find the nearest town. She encounters two handsome strangers, one who works for her grandmother and he escorts her to the mansion, AKA coven, where she resides.
Fallon is treated to luxury unlike anything she has ever known, although some aspects of this visit strike her as being a bit off. She is taken completely unaware by a betrayal that sends her into the territory of the local shape shifters.
Over time she discovers secrets about supernaturals that prior to now she had no idea even existed. One secret sends her fleeing in an attempt to return to her home in New York.
This is definitely the start of something fun! Fallon seems like a human workaholic who’s lonely. So after getting telegrams- lol who does that- from a grandmother she didn’t know inviting her to meet her, she goes on a trip. This trip is something else. And boy does she have her whole world changed. An amazing adventure has started and it’s beautiful and bittersweet and heartbreaking and amazing. We learn as she learns about all things supernatural and yet there’s a huge cliffhanger that leaves unanswered questions and the need to continue. Which I am right now! Do yourself a favor and get this book and start a fun adventure!!
I have enjoyed reading this story and I look forward to reading more of them,in this story a young woman gets a telegram from someone saying that she is her grandmother and would like to meet her at first she dose not believe it.then another one turns up but she dose not go straight away them someone cuts her and a man offers to clean it,but things get strange after that and she decide to go and see the woman that said she her grandmother but things are not what they seam.I would like to thank you for all your hard work and may fortune smile 😃on you always 😁from a bookworm that loves to read
Fallon was adopted and comes to meet her biological Grandmother in a very small and quiet town but, unfortunately nothing is at it seems. This is a rollercoaster ride, of emotional ups and downs, infilled with action and steamy scenes. Fallon is spicy and full of angst and gives the story depth. He love interest he quiet, strong and hides his emotions. I won’t say who that is so it doesn’t ruin the story! This is a great start to the story and doesn’t give any hints about which direction it takes in book 2. Top draw!
Even though the author prepared me for the fact that the MC was gullible, I wasn’t prepared for just how much it was. I love all sarah’s monster romances, they hit the spot for me, and i really like the romance development on this one. I will give it four stars because, even though i liked the different character put in place, i could figure it out since the very start who “the beast” was, and that kinda took some of the fun away.
4 ⭐️ This book was spicy, mysterious and enchanting. The ending left me wanting more and I can’t wait for this fall for book 2! My main qualm with it that cost it a star was the editing-or lack there of. There were a ton of little typos/grammer errors that I was able to look past but it definitely bugged me a bit. Otherwise I enjoyed the book and I look forward to the rest of the series!
This was an entertaining quick read. The story was interesting even if the FMC is not just gullible, but a complete idiot.
Also, there were a lot of spelling/grammar/continuity errors. I was able to work through them but it was annoying, at one point, confusing as the author referred to Lucas as Ryker at one point.
This was a wild ride. She gets a letter from her estranged grandmother to come visit some random tiny town. She eventually does but it's weird and not everything is as it seems. They are frozen in time. Her grandma ties her in the woods to try and sacrifice her to the beast, it doesn't work bc she's saved by a hunter (who is a wolf) and they are prob mates and he is also the evil beast.

Fallon grows up adopted, but then is sent a telegram from her biological grandmother. Deciding to visit Winter Creek, she goes to meet her, out of sheer curiosity. Once there she's thrust into a world of supernaturals and learns of a curse. Is she the one destined to break it?
This book is enjoyable, moody at times and is very predictable! But, it's also fun.
This is a great first installment to Fallon’s story.
There is a lot of mystery, twists, turns and ending up with some answers and questions with frustrations. Does she get anyone good by her side? Does she find her “family” that she was always hoping for?
Great character introductions, development, and ready to dive into book two.
I picked up this book from a booktok rec! Honestly, I quite enjoyed it. It reminded me of something I would read on Wattpad but like in a good way. I'm big mad that it ended in a cliffhanger though because I want to know what happens next. Don't leave me in suspense like that!!!! 😆
Wow, simply amazing. I felt like I was there in Winter Creek. Such a great job with this town. Characters that had depth and personalities. Does end on a cliffhanger.
I received a free copy of this book v and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A fantastic new trilogy starter from Sarah Spade. Delightfully dark and sexy. Great characters, and a well written storyline. Would recommend. Cannot wait for the next book!

This book surprised me. I can honestly say I didn't expect much going into it. But the story arc was well built, the plot twist may have been a bit obvious and the spicy scene was rushed and felt a little meh :/ but overall I wanted to continue reading. Solid writing (typos nonwithstanding).
A good first book with a mysterious storyline hence a lot of confusion. Fallon is very guliable but going to Winter Creek certainly makes her grow up a lot. Highly recommended
so good but make sure you have book two on hand when you finish cause it ends on a cliff hanger and your going to want to know right away. wish I did lol but now I gotta wait till book 2 comes in from Amazon LOL.
This is a wild book she here’s from a grandmother she didn’t even know about and goes to visit only to find that her grandmother wants to sacrifice her to the big bad wolf. And her grandmother is a witch.
