"This is Mills & Boon/Harlequin romance at its best!" Goodreads reviewer
Michelle is an award-winning author who has been writing for romance publisher Harlequin Mills & Boon since 2007. "Truly funny and moving", “Poignant and absolutely impossible to put down,” and “Sparkling with warmth, humour and charm” is just a small sample of what the critics have had to say about her romances. In 2019 she graduated with her PhD (her topic area was Contemporary Romance and Feminism). She’s a sucker for happy endings, heroines who have a secret stash of chocolate, and heroes who know how to laugh. She lives in Newcastle on Australia's east coast with her own romantic hero, a house full of dust and books, and an eclectic collection of 60s and 70s vinyl.
Good book. Nicola has taken the job as a nanny to get away for awhile. Her fiance broke up with her to marry her best friend and she just can't deal with all the sympathy right now. Nicola is going to take this time to get her life in order. She didn't expect to fall in love with the two little girls or be so attracted to their father. I liked Nicola and Cade. Nicola has taken the initiative to get away for awhile and also take that time to work on the things she wants to change. I did notice immediately that she has some real self-esteem issues. Much of this was caused by her mother's attitudes, but some were caused by her broken engagement. She also had a real lack of Christmas spirit because of it. I loved the way that she immediately took to the kids. She was great with them and seemed to know just how to deal with some of their problems from their mother's desertion. Her attraction to Cade was something she didn't want to deal with, but it wasn't going away and he was feeling it too. Cade did a great job of helping her face her feelings and was also able to get her to enjoy the Christmas season. Nicola was also envious of his close family and really enjoyed being a part of it over the holiday. By the time Christmas was over she knew she had fallen in love with Cade, but also realized that he wasn't ready. When she went home she was sure she'd never see him again. Cade was definitely a tortured hero. He had been devastated by his wife's desertion and now had no intention of falling in love again. He was immediately attracted to Nicola, making him feel things he hadn't felt in a long time. He also like Nicola the way she was and couldn't understand why she didn't. I liked the way that he seemed to be able to see what she needed and was able to help her with it. I really enjoyed seeing him try to make this Christmas so wonderful for his kids. I also enjoyed seeing him show his love for them so much. He was falling in love with Nicola, but hadn't let go of his past. When he proposed to Nicola it was for all the wrong reasons and when she turned him down he was surprised. I really liked the way that Nicola's refusal made him take a good look at himself. I liked the way he came to her at the end.
A clean, Christmas Mills and Boon, set in Australia? Um, yes! (And by clean, I mean there was a lot of kissing and interest, but nothing happens, on or off page - and while it mentions some "inappropriate" thoughts, there's no detail.)
Christmas can be rough when you're coming off a break-up - whether that's from a fiance backing out (in Nic's case) or a divorce (in Cade's). Add Cade's two young daughters, and it's even harder.
This story was sweet. They were both trying so hard to respect boundaries and keep things professional, but when kids are involved? Good luck. I liked the messaging around Nic's self esteem, and that we teach the people around us how they should treat us. Sometimes, all it takes to be treated better by people in our lives is to behave like we expect better - plus, maybe an honest conversation or two (hard as that is). There was also some great emotional processing - what does moving on look like? How do we handle relationships when an ex has to stay part of our lives (because of kids or overlapping social circles)? What does healthy communication with a new partner look like?
For once, I like the fact that she moved back to the city after her contract. Partly, that's because she was only there for a contract, so her move was expected and natural. However, I also really appreciated that it was part of her boundaries, and not settling for less. And the way he showed up on her doorstep, upholding his end of their bargain, having processed his emotions and desires? Yes please, thank you, well done.
The one part of this that didn't click for me was her mum just changing her rhetoric. We spend the whole book hearing that her mum has always been stiff and critical, then expect us to believe that one conversation flips that script? I couldn't quite swallow that one.
‘I went too far.’ His voice broke the afternoon silence. ‘The thing is .... ‘ he drew in a shaky breath.....I wanted to insult Brad and Diane. I don’t know them and I have no right to say anything, but I am so dirty with them for what they ‘before to you. Nobody deserves what they did. Especially not someone like you, Nicole.
With Covid19 in the headlines I needed a dose of something bright and cheerful. Something feelgood and optimistic. Michelle Douglas's 'Nanny Who Saved Christmas' is perfect for that, whether it's Christmas or not. Such fun, so charming and bright with endearing characters that will leave you thinking about them long after you've turned the final page.
My review was originally posted on RomanceJunkies.com and is shown below:
Nicola, a school teacher turned nanny who is running away from her life as she knows it, is trying to make herself over to please others, not herself. Strong minded Cade, her new boss and father of the children she will be nanny to for the next two months, likes Nicola just as she is. What happens with each misstep they make as they fight their chemistry? Read THE NANNY WHO SAVED CHRISTMAS by Michelle Douglas - you won't be disappointed! Douglas' THE NANNY WHO SAVED CHRISTMAS a quick reading contemporary romance with a nice storyline that includes children, a new nanny, a rich cattle rancher in the Outback of Australia, Christmas, family, friends, tears, misunderstandings, laughter, romance and love. The chemistry between Nicola (Nic) and Cade is almost immediate but fought every step of the way - sometimes by one or the other and other times by both of them. They kept getting their signals crossed and would run away from each other more often than they were together. The love between Nic and her new charges was immediate and shone through the pages. The descriptions of the house, the Christmas decorations and the landscape made me feel that I was there. There was an unexpected twist and happily ever after at the end which gave closure but I would have loved a few more chapters.
I have not read books by Douglas before but I look forward to reading more of her books especially since her books have themes that I love - babies, Christmas or rich men.
SNIPPET—Michelle Douglas' fast paced and action packed title, THE NANNY WHO SAVED CHRISTMAS, is a quick read. When children and Christmas are linked together with love and romance, what more will you need
I really enjoyed this book. It was uplifting and fun. There were a few sweet times and there were a few close call sexy times. I loved the characters and the detail she put into describing everything. Wonderful job Michelle!
Bastante entretenido, aunque no profundiza demasiado ni en los personajes ni en la historia de amor, está bien para pasar un buen rato. Hay escenas muy entrañables y cumple el propósito de estas historias románticas de navidad.
This such a heart warming beautiful story I so loved Cade and Nocola's tory a gretting a cattle station in the outback of Queensland a must read. I love Christmas stories.
