When she revs up her Viper to get his attention while he’s on patrol, tempers and sparks fly—but their rendezvous is interrupted by a disturbing cry for help.

Mercy is back from FBI camp and feeling a little disconnected from her man Dawson. Not one to sit around and mope, she decides to take matters into her own hand. If you are fan of the Mercy Gunderson series you know how intense this kick-ass heroine can be so I enjoyed getting to see a playful, sexy side of Mercy before she's guns a blazin' and back to business of snuffing out the bad guys, which in this case is a domestic abuser. The sad reality is some people can't be helped by the Sheriff's office or the FBI but Mercy is never one to just walk away until justice is served.
Mercy and Sheriff Dawson are an interesting couple with never a dull moment between them and this story proves she and Dawson may not be the perfect couple but they are perfect for each other.
If you haven't started this series, what are you waiting for? You've got plenty of time to read the first two books in the series before the 3rd one releases January 8. You WILL NOT be disappointed, Lori Armstrong's writing style and talent will blow you away.
This is really more of a teaser at 24 pages than a novella. The first half of this (the 24 pages) is a scene with Mercy and Dawson, who have a stolen moment together, ending up on a domestic violence call. Sadly, I can tell you that working as an emergency dispatcher for many years, this part of the story is dead on accurate. Mercy handles this in her usual manner. This snippet however is a great example of Armstrong's writing and doesn't require any previous knowledge of the series, if you're interested in checking out her voice (highly recommend you do!).
The second part of this novella, approx 25 pages, is a preview of her new book Merciless.
My first experience of reading about Mercy Gunderson is intriguing enough to want to read more. This short story was coupled with a couple chapters of the upcoming novel, Merciless, and showed both the personal side of her relationship with Dawson and the intrigues of a murder on the reservation. This is a great way to experience a new author.
FBI agent Mercy Gunderson, back home after some four months spent completing her training at Quantico, shows her playful side as she teases her on-duty boyfriend, Sheriff Mason Dawson. Although things threaten to go catawampus, their rendezvous goes pretty much as Mercy had hoped . . . until a call for help interrupts their encounter. Mercy accompanies Mason as he answers the call and discovers that, despite the law, there are some things that simply remain unfixable.
Told from Mercy’s point of view, the story offers readers an eye-opening and sobering look at what law enforcement can . . . and cannot . . . accomplish. In this one day in Mercy’s life in Eagle River, South Dakota, events run the gamut from adventurous, to violent, to sexy, to humorous as readers are drawn into Mercy’s world.
The captivating plot and two intriguing nuanced characters work together to keep the pages turning in this brief but breathtaking story. It stands on its own for readers who have not yet read any of the books in the series
The Mercy Gunderson Mystery series starts with “No Mercy” and continues with “Kill Mercy.” This short story follows next, preceding the third book, “Merciless.” As a bonus, there’s a two-chapter sneak peek of “Merciless” included with this eBook.
This e-short story was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Recounts a day in the life of Mercy Gunderson, FBI field agent in Rapid City, South Dakota, close to the small town of Eagle River, Mercy’s home town, where her father was the former sheriff. The county encompasses an Indian reservation. She’s been living with Dawson, the current Eagle River County Sheriff, for some time, which makes for some tension not only between their personalities but also between FBI and local law enforcement. Mercy, the narrator (much like Stephanie Plum or Kay Scarpetta), introduces us to some of the other characters in both the FBI office and the local and “rez” denizens and law enforcement personnel.
This story entails Mercy and Dawson being called to a domestic-abuse location, a frequent one for Dawson but which is quite disturbing for Mercy, in that Dawson seems to be inured to the chronic physical and psychological injuries perpetrated by the family’s father onto his wife and their children. No real resolution is made here, more of a description of what law enforcement in the “real world” entails. I found this story to be a bit jarring, between the sort of comedy of Mercy and Dawson, and the very violent, sad situation of the family.
BUT, I was hooked! Ms. Armstrong includes a “teaser” (three chapters) of her book, “Merciless,” which I would recommend you read, for it fleshes out Mercy’s background and some of the other important relationships among the characters, in the context of a kidnapping and murder of a young woman on the reservation. This is the third in this series, the first two being “No Mercy” and “Mercy Kill.” Found out they’re at the Library, in audiobook form, so do indeed plan to check ‘em out, Four stars, recommended.
If you haven’t gotten the chance to meet Mercy Gunderson yet, you so should use Silent Mercy as you gateway to her. Mercy is a tough as nails kinda gal! She would never be mistaken for a girlie girl. She is finally back from months of FBI training, and she gets an idea of how she can get a moment alone with her sheriff boyfriend and kinda runs with it. Needless to say that doing 130 miles an hour in front of his patrol car isn’t the best plan, and like most of there attempts at time together this one doesn’t go as planned when the ugly sides of his job interfere as well.
I don’t want to give away too much of this great short, but I do have to say that Sherriff Mason Dawson is one hell of a man. He is one of those guys that just gets his girl, and doesn’t try to get her to change. His quiet strength brings out the softer sides of Mercy, and I just think that is freaking awesome. Lori Armstrong has written a novella that truly makes you long to hear more about these two!! Luckily we don’t have to wait too long for that. Hehehehe!! I hope y’all love this series and novella as much as I have!! Mercy is a character that just grabs a hold of your heart!
Short and sweet...and funny and sexy and sad. As a few other reviewers have mentioned, this is a free short story in Lori Armstrong's Mercy Gunderson series. This short story falls between Books 2 and 3. It is just a glimpse into a couple of hours in the lives of Mercy and the man in her life, Sheriff Mason Dawson. In a few short pages, there is humor, sex, violence and more. I'm not sure how Ms. Armstrong manages to fit so many emotions into so few pages, but it's a testimony to her skill and talent that she is capable of doing just that. I'm a fan of Lori Armstrong and I would have paid for this short story. However, I love when one of my favorite author's gives his or her readers free reads-it's like a nice little present. Serving more as an introduction to her next novel, Lori G. Armstrong has written a very short story about her main character, FBI agent Mercy Gunderson, who returns home from Quantico and has a run-in with Sheriff Mason Dawson - which is how she planned it.
Following an unnecessary sex scene, the story picks up when they are called to a possible theft at a small farmhouse. Mercy realises that there are some cases you can never win and this story peters out at the end.
A reasonable introduction to the series and characters. I would consider reading more.
Mercy has come home after four months and learns a little more of what goes on in town around her as she accompanies her significant other, the sheriff on a call.
A concise narrative drives this short story's plot and characters. Perhaps, it is the shortness of this tale, but it somehow feels lackluster and/or incomplete.
The main characters are strong-willed and authentic.
A teaser story prepping readers for the soon to be released novel Merciless.
As an introduction it skillfully introduces the salient characteristics of Mercy Gunderson. Works as a tease most definitely. As a standalone short story, not so much.
I can't wait for Merciless' release and more Mercy.
When they say "short" they're not joking. It took maybe 20 minutes to read this one. I always love a Mercy story and this was just a little snippet. A little romance, a little Dawson, a hot tempered Mercy, and it was free!! Good story.
I loved this one, it was classic Mercy, it showed the brash woman she is, one who doesn't play by the rules, but her own moral code. I loved her taunting the POS man, I hope everything she said comes true!
I hadn't read this author before and although I give this my usual complaint about these shorts being too short, this and the included sample from her third book, Merciless, was enough to get me interested in this series. So I guess I'll be looking for book #1.
Good book - glad it introduced me to this author - will read other books in this series and her other series. This book was free on Amazon kindle!! Thanks!
FBI agent from SD, she is good with a gun and wants to save/help the weak if she can. Looking forward to the other books in this series.
In this short story, Mercy, a FBI agent, partners up with Mason, a sherriff/her boyfriend, on a domestic disturbance call at the Cartright home. The author writes Mercy as a very likeable strong character.
I miss Mercy this year and this was just a taste of what's to come in January. I love her comments to the father and more so of the ones to Mason when she writes her own ticket. LOL
Well, it was definitely a teaser. I liked the character but I don't think it works as a short story. I am looking forwarding to reading one of her complete stories about these two.
As an introduction to a character this one was pretty intense, I know I would hate to get on Mercy Gunderson's bad side especially if she had her gun handy!
Holy CRAP! Lori Armstrong packs a punch in this little short story. Mercy Gunderson and that hot Sheriff Dawson are back! I cannot WAIT for Merciless to come out!
