CMC’s own Harlem-bred literary giant Treasure Blue, brings you Fly Betty, the third installment in the acclaimed Harlem Girl Lost series.
In the multi-billion dollar a year entertainment industry there is a secret society of women that few are privy to. All of these women are vying for one thing – an opportunity to live a luxurious, lavish lifestyle by snagging a rich and famous singer, rapper or athlete. But being drop-dead gorgeous and super fly are only pieces of what it takes to catch one of these wealthy and highly sought after young millionaires. Where luck, timing and persistence can be determining factors on the surface – deceit, lies and manipulation are what it really takes to have a chance at catching their men.
Betty Blaise, or Fly Betty to those who truly know her, was not in it to be a wife or even the baby momma of a wealthy public figure – she had her sights set higher, much higher. While most of these women use sex as their weapon of choice, Betty, a senior majoring in psychology, has developed a weapon that proves much more powerful.
Up until now Betty has lived her life according to her own strict rules and standards, refusing to compromise for anyone, even if it potentially meant shielding herself from true love. But when she encounters a man that she would never have anticipated falling for in a million years, soon, the very rules Betty once lived and died by are going to be put to the test. The very tools she used so effectively against wealthy men begin to turn against her – and deadly consequences are sure to follow.

I have to admit that when I first started reading this book I was not into it at all. I was like “REALLY and what in the heck are all these rules?” I was about to put it down and move on to the next, BUT I kept reading. Because I like to finish what I start and I also like to give everyone a fair chance, I pushed on through. This is not the first book I've read from Treasure Blue, so I am fond of his writing and I am a fan to say the least. Once I got to Book Two, things started to take off from there and the events kept me moving on to the end. I was very pleased with the ending and was glad that I finished the story. I gave the book 4 stars, because it started out way too slow for a Treasure Blue book. I felt like if the Books would have been placed in a different order Fly Betty would have been a 5 star page turner from Page 1. Black Betty went through it. She encountered some gruesome situations, and I just personally felt like Treasure should have kicked off the story with her life story. After all, Black Betty was the one who birthed the story and Fly Betty. All and all, if you can get past Book 1 Fly Betty is an intriguing and captivating story and you won't be disappointed after you finish.
Fly Betty is broken down into several books. Each book has a purpose and helps to develop the characters even more. What exactly is a Fly Betty? A Fly Betty is "A girl or woman, as knowledgeable in the streets as she is intelligent, and has that look and attitude that every woman wants." The main character is Betty Blaise and she is a very intelligent woman, who is trying to make it through college. She has succeeded mostly due to following the rules that her mother have given her to live by. She always let's her mind dictate to her, instead of her heart. Betty has standards and she refuses to compromise them for anyone, that is until she meets the man that her usual tactics don't seem to work on. Treasure created very in-depth characters and the way the book is broken down, makes the story come together even more. Fly Betty takes you on a journey as a girl learns that there is always an exception to the rules. And don't let the rules fool you, it's not a relationship guide telling you what to do to keep a man. These are Betty and her mother's rules. There were definitely some shockers and the ending is something you could have never expected. If you've read Harlem Girl Lost or enjoyed any of Treasure Blue's other novels, then you will love this one!
I can't express in words how good this book really is. Treasure Blue knocked it out the park with this story! It felt so real you can't help but be fully immersed in the life and times of Annabelle. The ups, downs, twists and turns will utterly leave you speechless. I found that the rules to the game could be any woman's story and have chosen to adapt some of Fly Betty's rules in my own life. If you've never had the pleasure of reading one of Treasure Blue's many books, I employ you to try this. I guarantee you will be moved
When I first started listening to this book, I had every intention to put it down, and move on to something else! Book one wasn't doing it for me. Then book two started....what a turn around. I thoroughly enjoyed Annabelle Blaze's story. The ending was unexpected! All in all, if you can get pass the first book, the story is actually decent.
Not the typical Urban Fiction story. This is my first book by Treasure but will not be my last. There are two stories before this one, however, I was able to follow along with out reading them. Highly recommended. I read this book in about four hours.
All I can say is wow! Never saw it coming or would have guessed what Treasure Blue had in store. Simply, LOVE! Fly Betty was more than I expected...leaving my mouth hanging open with a huge ass smile on my face. Highly recommended...great read!
I couldn't get into it in the beginning but once I got past 30% it took off. One of the best books Ive read this year. I didn't see that twist coming at all. T
Definitely a page turner..full of emotions on all levels..didn't expect the twist towards the end but loved it..Will definitely read more from Treasure Blue
STORY Although it’s not the most well-written book I’ve ever read or listened to, FLY BETTY was entertaining most of the time. In the beginning, I was eager to learn about our main character, “Fly Betty” yet once I was sucked into her story, she began telling the story of her mother, “Black Betty”. Eventually the story does come back around to the younger Betty yet I didn’t understand the reasoning for the back-and-forth way the story was told. I see that the audiobook wasn’t 100% entertaining because there were periods of time when the author would ramble on various topics that I’ve personally if I’m boring (like the history of Harlem). There was extraneous information that, if removed, would’ve resulted in a more streamlined, concise and possibly more entertaining story.
PERFORMANCE I listened to the Audible audiobook narrated by Jessica Pimentel. Pimentel does a phenomenal job while narrating dialogue, completely, “becoming“ the character she is speaking for. However, while reading non-dialogue portions of the book, Pimentel consistently spoke in a very, very choppy manner. Most of the time, her narratives were so choppy with such huge gaps between words that one sentence sounded like multiple, smaller sentences (for example making the sentence, “Betty walked away quickly and exited the building“ sound like, “Betty walked away quickly. And exited the building.”
Tough read. It took a lot to finish this book with the gang violence, risks and violence of prostitution and the high costs of drug abuse. To say the novel is gritty is an enormous understatement. I saw bits where I worked but I could go home at night and it wasn’t my life. It made me more aware of the Stress and vulnerability of living in poverty on the edge and the desperation and depths possible. It made me see how privileged I saw to close the book and look elsewhere when so many folks cannot.
Betty grew up in Harlem with little money or support. To pay the bills, she worked a strip joint and the street until she met with disaster at the hands of a john who left her disfigured, pregnant and addicted to oxy. She ended up in a psych center when she found out who had sent that violent john her way and retaliated. When her daughter Fly Betty was born, she was raised by Betty’s cousins. She taught Fly Betty not to depend on a man and always leave him wanting more. Fly Betty follows her mother’s advice until she meets Scar the rapper who she thinks she can help, mold and love. When she finds out the truth about Scar, she is caught in a web where she seems destined to follow in her mother’s footsteps until an unexpected twist and opportunity for new life for them all. Revenge
Definitely in my top five favorite Urban Fiction tales...the plot was strategically weaved verses the stacked scenes Street Lit has come to favor...And the stories conclusion!? So Eccentric even this genres most avid readers, will fail to guess its end. But trust me, you won't want to...it's just that good!!!
This was a very good read and had a lot of twists and turns throughout the story. This was the first book that I read by this author and after reading this one I will be sure to read his other books. I had this book for years and I'm sorry that I did not read it sooner.
I can't even finish this book. It drags on and comes off as a "how to" book as opposed to one with a real storyline. Definitely will not try more in this series.
Fly Betty is the first but will not be the last book that I've read by Treasure Blue.I was very please with his work and enjoy this book to the fullest. When I first started to read this book I really wanted to put it down and just give up, but the more I read the better the book got. I think the rules could have been left out because I did not see the connection to the story, but there was a connection I just didn't notice one. I also thought that book 2 should have been first and it would have flowed a lot better for me, and that's the reason I gave this book 4 stars. With that being said the book was AWESOME...after reading book 2 the book just caught my attention and would not release it...I was on and adrenaline high with this book I had gotten to the point to were I could NOT put the book down. I was tired but refused to put it down I just had to finish it because the suspense was killing me and I just had to know what was going to happen. I really really enjoyed this book just when I thought I knew the ending something else would happen and I was like damn really. While reading this story at times my heart would race and my temperture would rise because things were getting extremely exciting and I could not believe some of things that were taking place. At the end day Fly Betty came off on top and thats all that truly mattered to me. Good job Treasure Blue good job.
I am a fan of Treasure Blues... I didn't enjoy this book as much as his others but, I did enjoy it. I ignored the typos but must admit I was a little confused when they were talking about Scars ex wife. He originally said her name was Porsche. Then they were calling her "Hollywood Gene"? I liked the plot twist at the end but... It didn't seem plausible that the same woman who threatened her professor with a sex assault charge would faint at the sight of her boyfriend involved in a sexual act. Not to say that strong and/or manipulative people can't have moments where they lose it but, whatever. The rules all throughout the book were necessary for the plot line (and some were very true to life) but, annoyed me for some reason. I think my favorite part wasn't even reading about Betty but, reading about her mother and how she wound up where she did. I think killing her best friend Fabian was a stretch. Especially because the person who did it (while I understand was trying to hurt Betty as badly as he could) seemed like the most unlikely. He threw a red herring to steer us into thinking it was Scar or one of his people. Clever but, the person who did it didn't play such a huge part in the book anyway. I did like the incorporation of a character from another book of his. Oh well. Still looking forward to the next.
A rough draft, but this is not print-quality work. It's a shame that nobody saw the value in editing and revising this work. Run-on sentences, misused words, and redundancies are among a few of its issues. There are greater problems with the choice of narrative and awkward time-hopping. The female perspective feels inaunthentic and cliche. It reads as what men think of women, not as a genuine feminine voice. The story of Fly Betty's mother is more interesting and better developed than the protagonist's, which is a mistake.
There were also issues with phony dialogue and embarrassingly clumsy sex scenes. You never use words like "moist" or "saluting" to describe anatomy, and, sorry, but pussy juices don't explode onto carpets. Also, it doesn't take doctors days to weeks to have a "finding" that your face has been scratched up, nor would any doctor, nurse, or surgeon sensationalize injuries and provide *explicit* details of the events that caused them.
The author also makes the mistake of representing himself in the book. At first, I wasn't sure if this was Cash Money's doing by forcing contracted authors to rep their label in the novels, but the direct reference to himself is worse. Either way, it's tacky and a definite no-no.
In summary, there are some cool ideas here, but this is a very under-developed work that wasn't given the time and effort it would need to shine.
Final lesson: a woman can fake an orgasm, but a man can fake an entire relationship
The book is broken up into sections about Black Betty and her daughter, Fly Betty. Black Betty, named because of her "black heart", is a stripper and prostitute. Fly Betty, named because she's pretty, dresses well and knows about the streets, is a college student who, through mind games and manipulation, has rich athletes and rappers give her money and jewelry. Fly Betty ends these relationships after 90 days until she runs into a rapper who doesn't fall for her manipulation. Like mother, like daughter, both have relationships with men who they thought cared for them, but really didn't. Needless to say, both of their relationships end badly.
Fly Betty was an audiobook, so I can't comment about grammar or editing. I don't usually read urban fiction, but I picked up this audiobook because I liked the cover (shallow, I know LOL). I didn't understand why the author changed the name of one of the characters from Porsche to Hollywood Jean.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book except for the part about genital mutilation which horrified me. The plot kept me involved until the end.
I have read plenty of novels but this was not only entertaining but educational. Young women and men should read it. This book shows how you can start off with a sure fire plan and it can spiral out of control.Which everyone should be taught .
I am also loving this story because it's from a woman's perspective. All though the book highlights women, it wouldn't be nothing without a man. How a men can completely change the path of a good woman. How no matter how strong you are love will make you see the same story and miss all the signs of failure. I can go on and on about this book, but you need to go buy your own. So you can get the full Fly Betty experience.
" A Fly Betty is a girl or woman, as knowledgeable in the streets as she is intelligent, and has the look and attitude that every woman wants." by Treasure Blue
Treasure Blue hit the jack pot with understanding some of the horrors women experience trying to grow up and be successful. I have teenage girls and they will be reading this book.
In Harlem, there is a code of the streets one must learn. Annabelle Blaise aka Fly Betty, learned what to do and how to do it--quickly.
With a challenging life to live, Fly Betty as the streets knew her, did what she had to do to survive, even if it meant going against her biggest rivals. Drawn into a world of sex to manage her addiction to heroin, there was a silver lining laid...in the form of a child.
Treasure Blue has mastered the craft of storytelling. Weaving an intricate timeline that spans over years with his characters, Blue exposes the reader to a lifestyle some would cringe at. However, he brings suspense, mystery and smart plot-twists to the forefront with Betty Blaise, the main character in this riveting novel.
One has to open their mind to the style of what Blue offers, which is entertaining and often times touching, making the reader think as they endure the journey.
Say what you want about Urban Fiction, Treasure Blue has his hand all over the scanner, and I doubt the let up will be anytime soon.
5 Stars Loretta R. Walls Author of "The Majestic Dynasty"
The book, Fly Betty by Treasure Blue, focuses on main character Fly Betty aka Betty Blaise. Betty Blaise is the daughter of, the original Betty, Black Betty aka Annabella Blaise. Annabella gives her daughter the name Fly Betty, meaning: A girl or woman, as knowledgeable in the streets as she is intelligent and has that look and attitude that every woman wants. Betty is working on her PhD in the field of psychology with plans to graduate cum laude. She lives by strict rules when it comes to self and male relationships. Soon, Betty finds herself breaking all her rules, ignores warnings and her mother’s personal words of wisdom. The book is well written, developed, soars and maintains steam throughout. There is drama, rage and an emotionally charge scene that will bring you to your knees shedding tears. The author continues to impress me when it comes to providing details of Harlem and its residents. I rate this book a 5+ star. Kudos for author Treasure Blue!!!!!
Fly Betty was a great read and I would recommend it. Although the story centered around Betty Blaise, I didnt find myself connecting with her in any way. She told an interesting story but I think that her mother really made the book. I enjoyed reading about how Betty's mother's life turned out and I felt myself thinking that the book was solely centered around her at times. I wanted to fall in love with Scar but something kept telling me that there was a lot of backstory behind his mysterious persona. He was like the dude that your family and friends warn you about yet you couldn't resist him, definitely trouble. Treasure did an awesome job telling this story ad keeping the reader interested but I could have done without all of the YMCMB references. The unexpected twisted ending shocked the heck out of me but I was left being confused by it.
Blaise Diaries: Betty's 6 Rules--Fly Betty and her mother are much alike in several ways when it comes to the men that they say those 3 words " I Love You". I was hoping that more info came out about Sebastian. Did not expect that with Scar ! Fly Betty best friend Fabian was correct about one IMPORTANT thing about Scar. I enjoyed reading this book I did find some similar things with other authors such as Donald Goines... Got confused if Hollywood Gene and Porshe where the same person. The last rule: a woman can fake an orgasm, but a man can fake an entire relationship... Who would think from the train ride to the end with Scar & Diesel. Main Man would not believe he would have a play in the outcome of some things.
I wish I could give this book 4.5 stars! I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to absolute end! I am waiting for more from the author!
Betty is smart, fly, and hip to the game. She uses what she has to get what she wants and does it with grace. Hated by women who want to be her, she takes it all in stride and does what she has to do. While some get paid to lay down with a man, she gets paid by the men who want to lay her down but never get the opportunity to do so. Birthed from a woman who did it the wrong way, she grows up vowing to never make the same mistake. Her vow is cute short when she meets Scar. All is well until secrets come to light. What will become of Fly Betty?
Fly Betty is one of those books that in the end all you can say is wow! Author Treasure Blue let you in on the lives of two very strong women who did what they felt they had to do to survive and to succeed. It is a book about a mother teaching her daughter the "GAME" of life and how to win at it. Every character in the book leaves some type of impression on the reader whether it is good or bad. The author also raised questions about what really goes on behind the scene in big time rapper's and athlete's world. This book was definitely a good read for me as well as the book club. It goes on the must read list for sure...
First off I'll say that I didn't know Treasure Blue was a male until I was about 2/3 into the book. I've heard of him and I believe I've read one of his books when I was younger but I seriously had no clue. It took me a while to get around to reading 'Fly Betty' but once I did I couldn't stop reading. I just had to know what was next. The "twist" in the book definitely is a shocker making this a great read. I will be revisiting the author's work as I'm confident his other books will hold my attention the way this one did.
I was trying to push past the loooong section about the mother because I found her daughter (the main character) interesting and wanted to read more about the freaking main character when I stumbled onto the whole organ harevesting, female genital mutilation part. just disgusting on so many levels. thanks for the nightmares, treasure blue!
This book told the story of the experiences that a mother and daughter had with love. Both of these women went through some trying times with their relationships but they both remained standing. The book started off a bit slow but quickly became very intense and finished with an unexpected ending. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author.
