What a surprise this book was! Not your typical Harlequin fare.
Claire is a nerdy woman just shy of 30, who has given up on love and passion. But her best friend, Julia, who is her opposite, has dragged her to New Orleans for Mardi Gras... and then disappeared. The last place Julia knew her to be was a vampire theme bar called "Once Bitten", run by the sexy Rafe, aka king of the one night stands.
To be honest I wasn't sure if this was a paranormal book or not. Just to be clear, it isn't. But that's what made it so good! I never knew where the story was going to go.
Rafe starts out helping Claire because he's a nice guy and he wanted to get her out of his bar, but then she starts to grow on him. And Claire, who rarely notices men sexually, starts to notice him too. The slow progression of their relationship from unwilling cohorts to lovers to more was very nicely done. Rafe has had a very hard life and Claire is quirky and a straight shooter.
At the end, there's a real sweet epilogue.
I listened to this on audio and the reader, Ginger Cornish, does a fine job. Her New Orleans accent for Rafe often sounded more like a southern drawl, but I didn't mind. She didn't bother with an accent for Claire as she grew up in Memphis and now lives in Boston, so I have no idea what that would sound like, lol!

Thanks to the publisher, Harlequin, and NetGalley for the chance to read this early!

Harlequin Blaze has been putting out some hot stories lately, and this is no exception. This is the first book by this author I've read ~ I plan to check out her backlist; and I except to be adding additional books to my TBR list. Pick this up...it is a quick, fulfilling read.

Claire and her best friend, Julia, take a vacation to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Then Julia hooks up with some guy and disappears; with only one clue to her last known whereabouts Claire decides to find Julia. Claire, a microbiologist who spent most of her life in a lab, enters Once Bitten and immediately realizes just how much a frumpy science nerd can stand out.

The moment Rafe Moreau saw Claire he knew that she was going to be trouble. As owner of the popular vampire bar, Once Bitten, he is familiar with the dark, seedy underworld of the Big Easy. Determined to get Claire out of his bar before she finds herself in trouble or worst causes him trouble. However, he quickly discovers she is not so easy to manage; he gets blackmailed into helping her find Julia.

Dear Ms. Burns:

I enjoyed your Harlequin Blaze release Relentless Seduction. It's got just the right blend of humor, sex, mystery, and faux vampires. I picked it up and didn't put it down until I gotten to the last page.

Claire Brooks has coke-bottle glasses, frizzy brown hair, no sense of style, a PhD in microbiology, and a best friend who's gone missing in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. Claire and her friend, Julia, have been best buds since third grade. They decided to come to the Big Easy to celebrate their last year of being in their twenties. Julia's a wild and crazy girl and, over the years, she and Claire have drifted apart: Claire's on the uptight side and is devoted to her job. But, years ago, when Claire needed support, Julia was there for her. Now that Julia's in danger--Claire's sure Julia wouldn't have vanished on her--Claire is determined to find her friend.

Julia was last seen, 24 hours ago--via a cell phone shot she sent to Claire--standing in front of a purple neon bar sign in the French Quarter. The bar, called Once Bitten, is a vampire themed bar. It's not the sort of place Claire would normally go within a mile of but the police have said it's too soon for Julia to be declare officially missing and Claire is, as I said, determined to find her friend.

When Claire enters the bar, she's completely unimpressed with all the vampire wannabes hanging about. When she sees the bartender, however, she's pretty damn impressed.
The moment the man turned her way a quiver of desire shot through her. Slate gray eyes fringed with dark lashes bore into her, freezing her in place. His collar-length black hair wasn't dyed, nor was the thick stubble darkening his angular jaw.

His grin softened as he leisurely replaced the tumbler on a shelf behind him before sauntering over to flatten his palms on the bar before her.

"What you need, cher? " His voice was as smooth and as deeply southern as Spanish moss hanging from a Cypress tree. He wore a wide leather bracelet on his left wrist and a thick onyx ring—a bat with its wings wrapped around his right ring finger. She lifted her gaze to his hard chest outlined by a tight black tee.

Claire opened her mouth but nothing came out. "Have y-y— She felt her face heat and her throat close up as he stared at her expectantly. Two decades of therapy and determination to overcome her stutter destroyed in an instant of anxiety.

The hottie is Rafe Moreau and he's not just the bartender, he owns Once Bitten. Rafe knows the seedy side of New Orleans well--he grew up dirt poor in the city and has been working at bars since he was fifteen. Claire asks him for help finding Julia and, initially, Rafe, not looking for trouble he doesn't already have, says no. But, after Claire spills her drink on a instantly furious guy in a dog collar, Rafe steps in to save her and, from that moment on, he and Claire together try and figure out what the hell happened to Julia.

Relentless Seduction is a fun book. Claire and Rafe are an appealing couple. Rafe's afraid to love--he had a bad childhood--and Claire's uncomplicated desire and affection for him is just what he's needs. Claire's a nerd whose brain makes her happy but she's never figured out how to enjoy her body and Rafe's just the guy to show her what she's been missing. (And, yes, in ways I liked, their relationship has overtones of the fabulous romance between Dennis Quaid's Remy McSwain and Ellen Barkin's Anne Osbourne in The Big Easy. When Rafe seduces Claire, I could just hear the whisper of the famous interchange between Remy and Anne: " That's OK. I never did have much luck with sex anyway." " Your luck's about to change, cher.")

The plot of this book steams right along--it's scary and funny at the same time. The sense of place is strong and, whether you love New Orleans or not, it's an interesting place to literarily visit.  It's a challenge to write suspense, sex, and sly comedy all mixed together but Ms. Burns breezily pulls it off.

She also manages to get a bit of moralizing in as well and it's done in a subtle, sweet way. Once Bitten isn't really for those who want to be vampires, it's for those who "don't fit in, the individuals that society might call freaks can come to Once Bitten and know there are others like themselves, and not feel so alone." In Relentless Seduction the message is live and let live. Or, as Remy McSwain says, "Just relax, darlin'. This is the Big Easy."

I often like Blazes and I'll add Ms. Burns's name to Blaze authors I look for. I give this effort of hers a B.

Relentless Seduction was 3 stars likeable novel. First I have to say I love the cover as it is sexy and would draw any ones attention.

I adore Rafe’s alpha male attitude with his yummy piercing. He is content with running his bar and every now and then having a one night affair with a tourist. His life is turn upside down the minute Claire walks in looking for her missing friend and eventually black mails him in helping her find her friend. She gets under his skin and he does not know how to deal with her. His parents died when he was young and he was left with his drunk grandfather who he ended up taking care of. He vowed to never get in a serious relationship as he feels they will eventually leave him. But the more time he spends with Claire the more he wants her. The chemistry is hot as well as the sex scenes.

Claire’s character at times did annoy me. I think it was more of the over usage of exclamation marks when not needed or just did not fit the scene. I liked that she was very stubborn and set on finding her missing friend. Because of her stubbornness she ended be a pain in the butt for Rafe. She never stayed where she was suppose to. Always running off to the worst places in town and it was Rafe who was always to the rescue.

The mystery part did at times drag for me and was easy to put down and pick back up. I was surprise to find out what happened to her friend did not see that coming. Then loved more of the twist and turns after.

Rating: 3 stars - Liked it

This book tells the story of Claire who is trying to find her best friend after she disappear without any notice from their hotel. She arrived at Once Bitten, a bar belongs to Rafe whom she believe is where Julie might be. Being an introvert as compared to her best friend, Claire doesn’t realise the danger that she is about to entered into. Rafe, seeing the vulnerability of her, decided to help her. But the attraction that he seems to have for her is not helping much. Both of them possess the same characteristic; the way they realised how importance each other are yet refuses to acknowledge the feeling.

This plot of this book is set up against a pretty eerie background; the belief vampires, ghost, taboo etc. And as i read the book, i feel pretty uncomfortable as it is different from the normal book that i read. It gives me a feeling of gloomy, dark and sad feeling. Nevertheless, i enjoyed reading this book!

I bought this one from Kobo.

I picked this up because Dear Author gave it a B, and it had been a while since I read a Harlequin Blaze. My recollection is that they are great for a quick snack of a read. This one rubbed me all kinds of wrong ways:
- The cliche of the frizzy-haired nerd girl with thick glasses and a rockin' body underneath her ugly clothes? Check.(This one really pisses me off. Too close to home? Possibly.)
- The good ol Nawlins accent? Check.
- The ex-girlfriend who is really a psycho? Check.

The bones of the story were good. The hero and heroine are both lonely and alone for different reasons. They have a connection, he helps her against his better judgement, they have sex. She breaks down his walls, he realizes that she's amazing and doesn't want her to leave. The writing felt clunky to me, no nuance or shading.

Maybe I've outgrown Blazes? Or maybe it's just this one. We shall see. I have two more I purchased a while ago. Stay tuned...

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Unrestrained. Unrelenting. And completely undressed!
When her best friend disappears during Mardi Gras, microbiologist Claire Brookes is determined to find her. Her only lead is a bar called Once Bitten--a haven for the dark, melancholy and vampire-obsessed. And while Claire generally prefers science nerds over the Gothy children of New Orleans, something about the bar's tall, dark and delish bartender makes her mouth water....
Bar owner Rafe Moreau is pretty sure that there's more to Claire than uptightness and frumpy clothes. And as they delve further into the dark, seedy underworld of the Big Easy, Claire and Rafe turn to each other, discovering a sizzling hunger that won't be satisfied.
But will one taste be enough?

My Thoughts

Set in the heart of New Orleans is a book that offers nothing that really has to do with vampires but has everything to do with secrets, lies, seduction, con artists and discovering that the packaging does not always do justice to what is inside someone.

Claire Brookes is the ultimate "nerd", she is smart, has a wealth of trivial statistics at her fingertips that she can rattle off at lightening speed and most of all is kind hearted and fiercely loyal to those she considers her friends.

Rafe Moreau is a man who prefers not to become engangled in others affairs, his belief is that it is better to keep everyone at arm's length so as to avoid drama and emotion that cloud his judgement.

These two are in for a rude awakening when they meet in Rafe's bar Once Bitten, the last known site where Claire's friend Julia had been before she disappeared during the Mardi Gras celebration the pair came to New Orleans to attend together.

The story has flair thanks to it's being set in the very sensual and dark city of New Orleans, it also has a sizzling romance that takes place in the middle of the mystery of finding out what happened to Claire's friend Julia and along with that plot line we also see another side of the Big Easy that only inhabitants are generally a part of. It makes for some interesting and at times dramatic reading!

Mardi Gras in New Orleans, disappearing best friend, hot bartender/owner of a vampire bar, nerdy woman whose stubborn streak is as strong as her loyalty and mix it all up together and you have a cocktail that is a potent and alluring reading mixture.

I have read nothing before by author Jillian Burns but if this story is anything to go by need to rectify that sooner than later!

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with this galley of the book, it was such an easy and enjoyable reading experience that hope others who love the setting of sultry/mysteriously dangerous New Orleans as much as I do will grab this one too. They will not be sorry!

Most of the Blaze books I've enjoyed have been fairly light, spicy reads. While still fun, Relentless Seduction hits a slightly darker tone and the vampire bar and vampire subculture that play important roles in the plot make this book stand out from others I've read. I can honestly say I've never read anything quite like it and since I mostly enjoyed both the plot and the characters, I'm glad I gave it a whirl. Or perhaps I should say that I'm glad I gave it a whirl in spite of its dreadful title, which really has nothing to do with the actual book.

Microbiologist Claire Brooks came to New Orleans with her best friend Julia for a bit of fun. However, after her friend disappears, Claire's frantic search takes her to Once Bitten, a vampire bar where the rather frumpy and buttoned-up Claire sticks out like a sore thumb. When she accidentally spills a drink on a tough and furious customer, bartender/owner Rafe Moreau finds himself having to ride to her rescue. Claire's demeanor and questions annoy Rafe, who worries that Claire will drive off business or that she will find herself in more trouble than she can handle. His attempts to get Claire to leave turn into him(grudgingly, at first) helping her look for her friend as he finds himself impressed by Claire's loyalty.

No one reading this book would be surprised to learn that Rafe and Claire fall into lust and then love with each other during the course of their search for Julia. This is a book from the Blaze line, after all. And in this case, the love story works. Claire is more comfortable in her lab working with data than she is exploring a sexual relationship with a lover who has more than a little bit of an edge to him, and Rafe very obviously enjoys flirting outrageously with Claire and getting her to live a little. The confident lover seducing his uptight opposite is a plotline romance readers encounter more than a few times in the genre and there's a reason for that. When it's done well, it works . And in this hands of this author, it's a lot of fun to read.

Hot, steamy and sexy this indulgent read will have your pulse racing…

A ‘Harlequin Blaze’ novel that is a quick, fast-paced read with an exciting Vampire twist! A truly fulfilling, satisfying read by an author whom I have not encountered before and who I shall be looking out for (in regards to her other works). ‘Relentless Seduction’ epitomizes everything you would wish to find in current contemporary romance/ erotic fiction. This likeable, highly readable novel is a tempting treat and which instantly draws your eye to the striking front cover. Character-driven and filled with intoxicating romance and intensity, you will find it hard to tear your gaze away from the pages containing compelling prose. Clare and Rafe’s relationship and connection is hypnotic, and I like Rafe’s alpha male presence and alluring aura. The chemistry between the characters is electric, as too is the unfolding drama that had me glued to my seat in suspense. The mystery element to this story was unexpected and adds a touch of intrigue to the otherwise conventional plot.

Unrestrained. Unrelenting. Completely Undressed…

“The moment the man turned her way a quiver of desire shot through her. Slate gray eyes fringed with dark lashes bore into her, freezing her in place. His collar-length black hair wasn’t dyed, nor was the thick stubble darkening his angular jaw.
His grin softened as he leisurely replaced the tumbler on a shelf behind him before sauntering over to flatten his palms on the bar before her.”
- Quote.
Jillian Burns sizzling story will delight Harlequin romance readers, as well as fans of contemporary literature and fifty shades. I would also recommend this book to readers of JR Ward and those interested in another side of Vampirism, that is more carnal than sparkling. This ravenous read that is sensual and seductive, hot and heady will have you racing through the pages to get to the end. A perfect balance of humor and wit, sex, mystery and Vampires that will leave you wanting more and which makes this a fun read.

This brilliant book was an exciting read that I would rate 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Mardi Gras in New Orleans….Anything goes….at least until someone goes missing. Claire is the good-girl. The microbiologist who always does what she’s supposed to do, brainiac, dedicated to her work……boring. Julia is her wild-child best friend who goes missing in the French Quarter. Her last known location…..a bar called Once Bitten.

Rafe owns and runs Once Bitten. He caters to those who are the edge of society. The vampire wannabes. When Claire comes in asking about her friend, he steps in to help her, against his better judgement.

I enjoyed the mystery and suspense of looking for Julia and then the attempt to save her once they found her. Rafe was an enigma. He didn’t want to get involved but he couldn’t help himself. He felt compelled to help Claire and as he did, he started to fall for her. He was leery of falling for her because no one ever sticks around. They always leave. It was fun to watch Rafe fight with his inner demons to reach out to Claire. He was often an ass to her. A defense mechanism.

Claire was interesting as well. She realized how boring her life back in Boston was. She slowly realized that she wasn’t living life, she was existing. Rafe brought out the best in her. She took Rafe’s hurtful words in stride. They hurt her, but she also began to realize why he acted like that. She didn’t lash out at him and wasn’t a bitch, but she also wasn’t a doormat to him. She had an inner strength that really came through in hear search for Julia.

New Orleans proved to be an interesting backdrop for this story. I loved the talk of voodoo and vampires. As I was reading it took me a while to figure out if they were real vampires or wannabe vampires. In either case, it made the story more interesting and the plot more dangerous.

This was my first book by Jillian Burns and I look forward to reading more from her.

Claire Brookes and her best friend Julia are in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. While out one night, Julia meets a guy and then disappears on her. Claire only has a picture that places her at a bar called Once Bitten as a clue to where she might be. Heading there to start her search, she quickly finds out how much she stands out.

Claire stands out with her frizzy hair, outdated clothing and her occasional stutter, and bar owner, Rafe Moreau is instantly intrigued. His typical hookups are college coed's looking for a good time, nothing that would tie him down but he feels protective of Claire and signs on to help her find her friend.

Rafe is very familiar with the seedy parts of New Orleans and has quite the bad boy persona while Claire lives a rigid, structured life in Boston. Bits and pieces of their history make you realize that these two are complete opposites.... but opposites that have an intense attraction that they can't resist.

I wish though that this had been a bit longer so we could see some more character growth for these two. Other than that, the story was interesting and the bones of the story and setting was different than your typical romance... sure it's bad boy meets good girl, but there were elements to this that I haven't seem much of in romance stories.

Check this one out if you are looking for a quick, steamy romance with a bit of suspense and mystery.

Thank you to Netgalley and Harlequin for the advance copy for review.

Relentless Seduction by Jillian Burns left me speechless. Wow! simply wow!
Rafe and Claire were two of the most stubborn people I have ever read about. Both of them loved the other but they were too afraid to speak up and admit it. While these two are put to the test in this book with a cult who believes they are vampires and being trapped in a small and confined space, It was hard to imagine that their love could outweigh the bad things that just kept popping up around them. This is exactly why I loved this ‘Harlequin Blaze’ so very much, because of the unpredictable course of Claire and Rafe’s relationship.

I also must mention how much I just love Ms. Burns writing style. She managed to one, draw me in even from the very first page and two, she had such a talent for descriptions. Throughout the book I was completely absorbed, I was able to imagine what the surroundings looked and felt like without being over whelmed with endless meaningless words as descriptions.

I’m a sucker for the tormented bad boys and I’m quite happy to see this particular bad boy get his happy ending.

‘Relentless Seduction’ is a romance of the ages, and I can see myself reading this book over and over again. Onto my keeper shelf this goes.

Relentless Seduction starts out with the disappearance of Julie, Claire Brooks' best friend in New Orleans. Claire set off to search for Julie and the last place that Julie has been was at Once Bitten Bar.

From the moment the bar owner Rafe Moureau set eyes on Claire, he knew she was trouble. His impression of her was that she was not part of the normal patrons that frequent his bar and she didn't belong in his bar.

Claire was relentless in trying to find her friend. Reluctantly, Rafe kept convincing himself that he was trying to keep Claire safe since Julie disappeared with a gang member named Shadow.

Claire is nerdy and scientific but loyal to her friends. Claire doesn't stay put and let the police handle her friend's disappearance. She would risk it all just to bring her friend home.

Rafe comes from an opposite end where he relied only on himself for survival. He doesn't have any friends. He doesn't involved himself with other people's problems. Yet with Claire, he doesn't understand why he feels so protective of her.

I love the theme of good girl meeting bad boy (reformed bad boy). I also love that the author has given Claire the handicapped of stuttering. Claire has a habit of either stuttering or reciting statistics in front of Rafe which is her way of dealing her dilemma. I also that Rafe doesn't seemed to mind Claire's stuttering.

Jillian Burns was a joy to meet and very nice lady. This is another author I've never read before but so glad I found. Claire is not the kind of woman you get used to reading about in romance books, she is shy and nerdy dressed in baggy clothes but under is a beauty that Rafe has no problem seeing. Rafe tries his best not to be pulled into Clarie's trouble but he can't help but be her knight coming to her rescue. Claire just wants to find her friend and won't stop until she does. Rafe is street tough but likes the way Claire makes him feel. The emotion between Rafe and Claire was so strong it jumped from the pages. I was worried a couple times that about them getting their HEA but they did. This book keeps you on edge wondering what has happened to Julia (Claire's friend). I didn't want to put the book down between the mystery and the chemistry the book has it all. If you like some mystery with your romance than you have to get this book. Mystery, romance and steamy love scenes what more could you ask for.....

Not what I expected but perfect in its own way.

I am a vampire enthusiast, give me a good Anne Rice, Kerrelyn Sparks, or Molly Harper any day. When you run across a New Orleans bar called Once Bitten "a haven for the dark, melancholy and vampire-obsessed" any vamp fan would melt. And you would be wrong. *spoiler* Not a single creature is remotely immortal.

That being said.... WOW. Can I say steamy. The back and forth between the main characters just hit me. A naive and determined young woman out to rescue her friend runs head to head with a reluctant, "wants to stay out of things" dark man.... Can we say fireworks. I keep coming back to this story again and again. Harlequin certainly knows how to pick a story that will Blaze.

Note - the end is so sweet I had to eat a piece of cake in celebration. It was that good.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, from the super sexy cover to the memorable characters. Their story takes place in New Orleans, and the author's thorough research brings the French Quarter and the Big Easy compellingly alive. The luscious, alpha male Rafe is the earthy owner/bartender of a "vampire" bar, and he is almost an opposite personality to the delectable but naive Claire. She is a microbiologist from Boston and, above all, a lady. The interaction and irresistible chemistry between these two as Rafe, with some reluctance, is drafted into helping Claire find her missing friend Julia is very entertaining. The story delivers on many levels: mystery, love, suspense, betrayal, danger, and lots of sexy sizzle.

Relentless Seduction is the second book I've received from Jillian Burns through the Goodreads Giveaway program. It was wonderfully enthralling.

The disappearance surrounding Claire's friend Amy during Mardi Gras in New Orleans led Claire to Rafe and a side of the city I'd never seen before... Or even imagined was there!

Graveyards, con men, cults, crypts and vampire worshippers... all without being a paranormal romance, made for an exciting tale. One I read in a single sitting!

I'm looking forward to more stories of strong women, masterful men and the love that brings them together. Keep writing, Jillian!

I think Dabney on Dear Author recommended this. I now remember why I gave up on Blaze. Too short, first of all. And I didn't really get a sense of the romance. It felt like they could have been any two people. There was no compulsion in their relationship. Also, a category length novel has no time for a light suspense subplot. This is the second book I've read recently with the damaged best friend. I just don't see what it had to do with our heroine other than as a tool for throwing the main characters together time and again.

This was exactly the kind of light-read, happy ending, not to mention hot, story I needed after Hopeless. The story was simple enough, but had a good pace and nice twists with the somewhat expected output. *sort of spoiler* Even the ugly ducking turned hot girl was played beautifully within the story without overdoing it. Loved the MCs and the gothic theme was kind of refreshing (odd, I know). Good Saturday afternoon book.
