Charlene Sands was able to pack her pages with a lot of emotional depth to her characters. The only reason why I didn't rate this book higher was that it felt like it was missing a scene (to the hero's emotional journey) -- readers will understand why the hero had hard feelings and why he was a jerk to her (so many times) but she took him back before some much needed graveling or something to level the playing field. Charlene is a talented writer and I can't wait to read Luke's story.

A good quick romantic read with that soap opera esque drama. I wish there was at least another chapter ot two for Logan to fully settle into his characters growth and for the story to have a smoother finish, it just felt a bit rushed.

Sophia Montrose had grown up on Sunset Ranch because her mother was the manager of Sunset Lodge in Nevada. The ranch owner had been in love with Sophia's mother and Logan Montrose hated Sophia because of this. He had kissed her in high school because some of his friends teased him about her liking him. He kissed her to prove to himself that she was easy and he that she didn't affect him like her mother had gotten to his father. Thing is, she did affect him. He just refused to accept it and hated her all the more because of it. She found out that he kissed her as a joke and got angry. She swore that she wouldn't have anything to do with him but she couldn't stop her body from reacting whenever she was near him.
She and her mother had moved away and she had been gone for 12 years. Her mother had lost a two year battle with cancer and Randall Slade had also passed. He left Sophia half ownership of Sunset Lodge with the stipulation that she had to run the place for a year before she could sell it. She came back home to run the place.
She was hoping to meet with Luke, Logan's younger brother, to get the keys to the place. He wasn't home at the time and it was Logan she ran into and had to get the keys from him. She could tell he still hated her. They were thrown together the next evening when Luke came home and took her to a diner for a chili supper. He ended up having to leave because a horse went into labor so Logan drove her home.
Logan made sure to bring up the fact that she had been a showgirl in Vegas and that she had married a wealthy oil man who was many years older than she was. Logan judged her without knowing her reasons behind what she had done. Someone was stalking her and she needed money for her mother's medical bills. The man had offered her protection and to help out her mother. Sophia and her mother were good friends of his. They had divorced amicably after her mother passed. She hadn't expected the news media to pick up the story and for everyone to find out what she had done.
She had come home and taken over the lodge to find that her stalker had seemed to follow her. She was finding notes from someone on her doorstep. She was nervous about living on her own. Luke had an accident on a horse and ended up with broken ribs and a broken arm. He was put in the hospital and then left the ranch to go visit a friend. She had no one to help her.
Sophia had arranged a surprise retirement party for the previous manager of the lodge and it was at the ranch house. Logan noticed her skittish behavior and questioned her until she told him about the stalker. He insisted that she move into the main house with him. She had been there for a few days and she was getting tired of being cautious around him. She told him she was going for a ride and he didn't want her to go alone. He accused her of planning to get him alone because she knew this. She hadn't planned it. She just wanted to get away from him. They ended up kissing and having sex in the barn. The spent the rest of the night together in his bed after that.
Sophia decided that it wouldn't happen again because Logan still hated her and she knew it. She wouldn't allow herself to be used like that. She was in love with him but there wasn't a chance that he loved her. She wanted to explain their parents relationship to him but knew that nothing more could happen between them until he was ready to listen to an explanation.
Gordon Gregory came to the lodge to check on Sophia. She had married him for protection. They had met because Sophia's mother had found his granddaughter in an alley. She had been beaten and was strung out of drugs. Sophia' mother had taken her in and convinced her to call home and get help. Gordon and Sophia had never slept together but Logan didn't know that. They had gotten along fine until Sophia's mother died. Gordon started putting pressure on Sophia to become a real wife to him and she had left. Everyone thought she had married the 71 year old man for his money but she had only wanted his protection. She had insisted on a prenup and left without taking anything from him. They talked and he left after checking on her to make sure she was doing okay.
Sophia and Luke were friends. She hadn't told him that she had moved into the house and that she was sleeping with his brother, Logan. She had kept in touch with him through texts while he was away recovering and staying with a friend. She was surprised to find out Luke had returned a week after sleeping with Logan.
She had vowed to only sleep with Logan that one time but he had asked her out on a real date and had taken her to a restaurant he owned about a hour from the ranch. They had slept together again that night and every night since for a week. She avoided talking to him about whatever she knew was still bothering him. Logan had gone to the barn late one night as a teenager and overheard his father telling Sophia's mother that he was in love with her. He confessed to marrying a woman as arranged by his family. Logan felt sorry for his mother having to be in a marriage where she loved someone who was in love with someone else. He had hated his father from that time forward. So far as Logan knew, his mother had found out about Randall's affair and had fired Louisa and sent her on her way out of their lives. Now Sophia was back. Logan didn't understand why his father had left her half ownership in the lodge.
Luke and Logan were arguing when Sophia arrived at the ranch house after hearing that Luke was back. Logan was yelling and told Luke that he had caught his mother and Louisa in the tack room making out when he was a teenager. He told Luke that he hated his father after that and would never let himself love Sophia. Sophia was hurt. She walked into the room and told the brothers that her mother and their father hadn't met until she had come to the lodge to work. Louisa's husband was a drunk and had left her when Sophia was a baby. They had fallen in love but Randall married their mother because Randall had gotten her pregnant. He didn't love her as a man should love his wife but they had brought together two large family's and built a successful ranch. Everyone thought that the boys mother had found out about the affair and sent Louisa away. The truth was, Louisa had felt guilty about the affair and confessed to their mother. She had left the ranch telling Randall that her loving him had been a waste of her time. She left because she loved him so much and she didn't want to be the reason their marriage ended.
Logan felt guilty that Sophia had overheard the conversation. Especially about hearing that he had found them making love in the tack room of the barn where he had first made love to her. Logan tried to pick a fight with Luke but Luke only laughed. He and Sophia were friends and there would never be more between them. It was obvious to Luke that Logan had fallen in love with Sophia.
Sophia moved out of the house and back to the cottage. She went to work and Logan found excuses to drop by every day of the next week to check on her. Logan and Luke were both worried about the stalker situation. Logan found some pictures of Gordon and Sophia online of when they were married. He looked closely at the pictures and realized that she didn't have the look in her eyes of someone in love. She had told him that she never slept with Gordon and he was finally able to believe her.
Sophia had gone out to dinner with Luke and the next morning he got a call. Sophia hadn't shown up for work. Logan first thought that he might have spent the night with Luke but he was in bed alone. He told Luke that Sophia was missing and went to find her. She wasn't at the cottage but Edward dog showed up. Edward was the lodge's cook's grandson. Logan followed the dog and found Edward and Sophia. She had gone for a walk and to talk to Edward. He had been leaving the notes for her to let her know that he wanted to be friends and liked her. He was 10 and had no idea that the notes were scaring her. She had stepped in a gopher hole and sprained her ankle so she couldn't walk.
Logan and her talked while she was sitting there after she sent Edward and Luke on their way, promising he would see to Sophia. He told her that he was in love with her and couldn't get her off his mind. He was and had been jealous of her and Luke's friendship since they were young. He had been fighting wanting her for years and he didn't want to admit that, even to himself. He asked her to marry him and she told him that she loved him and agreed to marry him. She asked Logan if he though that was why his father left her part ownership of the lodge. Logan agreed that was most likely the case. Randall must have known that Logan was attracted to her but fought against his feelings for her from a very young age. He wanted to get them together possibly so Logan would understand and forgive him even though he was no longer around. Logan was finally able to forgive his father and understand that he was only human and made mistakes like everyone else. He had only fallen in love.

Very good book. Sophia was left part ownership in the Sunset Lodge by Logan's father, who had had an affair with Sophia's mom while she was manager of the lodge. Logan is angry because he blames the affair on Sophia's mom and thinks that Sophia is just like her. Sophia is happy to be back on the ranch where she had been very happy growing up. She is dismayed by Logan's coldness and attitude but is determined to make her time at the Lodge work. Another thing she didn't expect was the strong attraction between them. When they acted on that attraction and Logan started spending more time with her, Sophia hoped he was beginning to see how wrong he had been, especially when she realized she had fallen for him. Logan was furious that Sophia had inherited part of the Lodge. He held her mother responsible for the problems in his parents' marriage and felt that Sophia was just like her. He didn't like the renewed friendship between Sophia and his brother Luke and thought that Sophia was just trying to follow in her mom's footsteps. He used their attraction to fix her interest on him, planning to keep it to a physical relationship only. He didn't expect to start liking her, but he still wouldn't give up his distrust of her. He nearly blew it at the end, but finally came to his senses. There were some pretty intense emotional moments where I could really feel what Sophia was going through.

When Sophia Montrose returns to Sunset Ranch to claim her half of the resort left to her as her inheritance, she faces the wrath of Logan Slade who despises her for many reasons. What simmers between the surface though is a stolen kiss when they were teenagers and an attraction that hasn't died. So when circumstances keep throwing them together, Sophia and Logan are forced to work out their differences and in the process find out that they are in love with each other.

D2205 Jan2013 Rich, Rugged Ranchers. Logan Slade never wanted to see Sofia Montrose. Now she's back and 1/2 owner of Sunset Lodge due to his father's will. Her past to help her mother after they left the ranch is a detriment to Luke. The big problem is that Sophie's mother and his father loved each other. His mother married his father when she turned up pregnant with Luke. It also combined two large ranches. Thorn in Logan's is that Sophia and his younger brother are best friends.

Well if I was him, I would have been scarred for life. That was just disturbing to be a kid and walk in on your dad having sex w/ someone who isn't your mom in the barn. Can I say GROSS? I don't know about you but I wouldn't want to see my dad's wobbly bits. How about you? Throw in an elementary stalker, jealousy, and romance where the guy doesn't want to admit that he is love, then we got ourselves a good story.

Logan and Sophia both grew up on the Slade Ranch, but Logan's always seen Sophia's mother as a homewrecker and his negative opinion now extends to Sophia. But Sophia's now inherited half the guest lodge from Logan's dad, and they can't exactly avoid each other.

Sparks fly a plenty, and they lead to a conflagration that consumes them both, in a good way :)
