The daughter of a town marshal, Linda Lael Miller is a #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of more than 100 historical and contemporary novels, most of which reflect her love of the West. Raised in Northport, Washington, Linda pursued her wanderlust, living in London and Arizona and traveling the world before returning to the state of her birth to settle down on a spacious property outside Spokane. Linda traces the birth of her writing career to the day when a Northport teacher told her that the stories she was writing were good, that she just might have a future in writing. Later, when she decided to write novels, she endured her share of rejection before she sold Fletcher’s Woman in 1983 to Pocket Books. Since then, Linda has successfully published historicals, contemporaries, paranormals, mysteries and thrillers before coming home, in a literal sense, and concentrating on novels with a Western flavor. For her devotion to her craft, the Romance Writers of America awarded her their prestigious Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Long a passionate Civil War buff, Linda has studied the era avidly for almost thirty years. She has read literally hundreds of books on the subject, explored numerous battlegrounds and made many visits to her favorite, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where she has witnessed re-enactments of the legendary clash between North and South. Linda explores that turbulent time in The Yankee Widow, a May 7, 2019 MIRA Books hardcover, also available in digital and audiobook formats. Dedicated to helping others, “The First Lady of the West” personally financed fifteen years of her Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women, which she awarded to women 25 years and older who were seeking to improve their lot in life through education. She anticipates that her next charitable endeavors will benefit four-legged critters. I never believed the romance. I also never really liked the FMC or her stepdaughter. The were fighting until the very end. The MMC loved, I mean once in a lifetime love, his deceased wife. So much so that he was writing a memoir about her for his sons. But he was totally fine with moving on with the FMC...because reasons. I couldn't tell you what they were because we never saw it.
There were several cheesy elements to thing story. It never seemed like a LLM book.
This was an enjoyable book, but the ending came out of nowhere. It felt very undeserved. Not enough time was spent actually resolving the issues. Everything just magically worked out with no real effort.
I enjoyed reading 'Christmas of the Red Chiefs' this weekend. This is a light-hearted holiday read which I'm sure all fans of Linda Lael Miller won't want to miss.
Sarah is a recent widow whose husband died in a plane crash while his girlfriend was flying. This leaves her with a 12 year old stepdaughter, Marlie, in Sarah’s care. Marlie is experiencing the first changes between childhood and adolescence. Sarah is broke since she discovered her husband had lost all their money and was deeply in debt. When her Aunt Delores breaks her foot and needs someone to fill in for her as the manager of a choral group. Sarah is surprised at her response to the handsome widower who lives across the street with his twin sons, Ryan and Sam (or is it Sam and Ryan?) who come complete with buckskin costumes and a feathered Indian headpiece.
This is a sweet Christmas romance with likable characters, a intriguing plot and a group of quirky secondary characters. Recommend to readers of Christmas romance and family drama.
Audio by Susan Bennett-Short story. A sweet widower w kids meets newly widowed stepmom after her jerk of a husband left her and his daughter broke and disillusioned. Both have other family and community dynamics at play, so it's a family story as well as a romance.
Good short story-about 2 1/2 hours. Good epilogue. Perfect for a cold December afternoon. I enjoyed this story and will read more by this author.
I liked this book quite a bit. Wondering how the title / titular details made it to the forefront of this book when it was written so recently though (2020). As a character, Sarah was hard for me to relate to although I did appreciate her emotional journey re: custody of Marley. The gift scene was very special.
This is a great, short, family centered story about what the holiday can look like when moms die, dads die, and we have to recreate family and maybe even start over.
There's a sweet romance in here as well. Linda Lael Miller's writing is great and my heart was full as this short novella took shape.
A delightful tale of romance and humor as the step mom finds her way in new territory. Alone and terrified of how to handle things the holidays and family show what happiness is.
This was a perfect short story for me. I finished it Christmas morning sitting by my Christmas tree. This story warmed my soul this brisk winter morning. Linda Leal Miller is a great writer I just love everything she writes.
In my opinion, this book deserves a rating of more than five stars. Love lost , love found, family lost and family found, faith in yourself lost and found
True love will find you even if you aren't looking
What a story! Here I sit with a biggest grin and tears screaming down my face. An Aunt she never really knew. A daughter that wasn't. 8 year old identical twins. What else? The love I wasn't looking for.
This was a nice short romance, and blended family type book. I did not like the narrators voice at first. One of the reviewers said she wined a lot. To me she had a superior sound, and it took me a while to have a good feeling towards the mother's character.
