A blood-spattered battle between diabolical sorcerers and the monsters they created.

In a city so dismal it's known only as "the Hole," a clan of Sorcerers has been plucking people off the streets to use as guinea pigs for atrocious "experiments" in the black arts. In a dark alley, Nikaido found Caiman, a man with a reptile head and a bad case of amnesia. To undo the spell, they're hunting and killing the Sorcerers in the Hole, hoping that eventually they'll kill the right one. But when En, the head Sorcerer, gets word of a lizard-man slaughtering his people, he sends a crew of "cleaners" into the Hole, igniting a war between two worlds.

Nikaido and Natsuki comfort Caiman after he is forced to confront some dark truths about his origins. Meanwhile, Professor Kasukabe goes grave digging with Shin and Noi in an attempt to unravel the mysteries surrounding a strange wax doll they have encountered. As Dokuga's gang of Cross-Eyes desperately try to cover their involvement in a murder, Asu finds himself in serious trouble with his fellow Devils. Hold on tight for the next installment of Dorohedoro!

--

EN I think I've figured out what doesn’t fully convince me about this series: the plot is too linear.

Almost the entire storyline revolves around Caiman and his quest to discover who he is and where he came from. It’s true that there are several interesting side characters whose backgrounds are gradually explored, but at its core, the focus remains almost entirely on Caiman’s journey.

Yes, there’s also En and his ambition to control Nikaido’s powers, but that ends up feeling more like a minor subplot — at least so far.

I feel the series would benefit from more complex narrative intersections and even some well-placed cliffhangers to keep the reader on edge. That said, it’s still an enjoyable read with high-quality artwork.

My absolute favorite parts were the ones pertaining to Asu & his current situation/bits of background we got in him. It's intriguing to say the least.

All in all, this was another solid installment for the series. Though, it does bring up so many more questions than it does answers. There are various odds and ends that I'm incredibly curious about, and I can't wait until those secrets are revealed.

I think this may be the best volume of this series yet. So many revelations! In these 160-odd pages, we get our clearest glimpse yet of Caiman's past, we see Nikaido's childhood, we find out who Asu really is, bodies are hidden, corpses vanish, and holy crap Chota, I could kiss you, you magnificent bastard! And underneath it all rises the question of just what the hell Nikaido's magic actually is.

So much happens here, but it never feels rushed. With each successive volume, Dorohedoro is quickly becoming my favorite manga of all time.

I’m stuck in the office on a saturday and during a national holiday (some coworkers are glad to have to work these days because at least they can get out of the house. I don’t know how I feel about that. I have unintentionally trained to endure this pandemic, given that in the past I’ve spent entire weeks without going out. But I don’t like being around people, so I only miss going to the woods). I figured I’d keep reading this fantastic series and reviewing those volumes.

The story is following distinct groups of people whose day to day lives have little to do with each other’s, and when they intersect, it usually involves a person from a group intending to rescue one of their people from another group. We have the protagonists alligator head dude and restaurant woman/time magician travelling to a town where they have been told they might find significant clues to the guy they are pursuing: he’s the breathing version of the ghost that lives in the protagonist’s magical mouth. That guy, a member of the same gang the protagonist probably belonged to before he lost his memory and his human head, might know who the hell alligator dude used to be before part of him turned into a reptile. When they arrive at that town, alligator dude starts getting those strong déjà vus that suggest he used to live here and attend obligations in different buildings. After he gets into a dilapidated school, he realizes that he used to attend classes there, and more importantly he gets flashes of speaking to the gang member they are pursuing. Both him and the audience finally realize that he wasn’t that gang member in his previous life, but apparently his best friend, who had barely been a tertiary character up to that point. That the person inside the protagonist’s mouth ended up being his best friend might be due to their close relationship. We still don’t know all the minutiae of the curse cast on him, though, or if we know them I haven’t understood them. In any case, when alligator fellow realizes this, his transformed head changes a bit: he loses the cross tattoos over his eyes, as well as some scales, showing the pale skin underneath. He also becomes distraught and depressed, very unlike him, which worries Nikaido, his best friend. There’s a memorable moment in which he confides in her that he feels he has a monster inside of him, that he has done terrible things and might do them again, and fears hurting her as well. She approaches and embraces him. We the audience know that he used to be a fabled serial killer of magicians in the past, probably some ultimate nemesis, and he might revert to it when the curse breaks.

In any case, the greenhorn from the gang that had been leading them to this town had lied about knowing the location of their hideout; she just wanted to travel with them. She goes on about how she wants to become the woman of the gang’s leader, and is also flirty with the protagonist. Apparently strong men get her wet, and her flirting annoys Nikaido more than she lets it show. They spend the afternoon in a fancy hotel they can’t pay for. During a moment they spend alone, Nikaido approaches the alligator dude and asks him what he will do when he recovers his memory. She fears that he’ll stay in this dimension and break off contact with her, and she offers him to become her partner in the restaurant. He’s glad that she’d have him despite their differences. However, she’s anxious, and a bit of text reveals to us, speaking from sometime in the future, that it was the last conversation Nikaido ever had with her best friend alligator dude. Given that I haven’t even reached the middle of this series, this must be one of those lies that fictional stories tell, and they can get away with them because we are already signed into being told stories that never happened. Damn your manipulation.

The hideout in that town does contain the gang member they are looking for. We have seen him go in and meet the local branch. They are a desperate bunch that, although they are distrustful of this former gang member that had died, aren’t eager to keep him around mostly because the branch can’t afford to feed him. I don’t recall exactly why, they end up tying him up while they deal with their landlord, a monstrous woman resembling one of the crones from “The Witcher 3”, who demands all the money they owe. The gang members end up killing her by complete accident, and they decide that they might as well move to her mansion and stage a suicide for the woman so they won’t be booted out. I don’t know why they would be allowed to live in someone else’s property just because she killed herself, but whatever.

Nikaido can afford to accompany lizard head dude on his journey because a demon, who used to be a childhood mentor of hers, had sent her away from her captor and also transformed a gay henchman of the big boss to take her place. The henchman has been living as Nikaido for a few days and he/she loves not only being able to cuddle with the boss but also to drape his/her voluptuous body with pretty lingerie. However, that spell only holds up as long as the demon holds up, and the demon’s boss has caught on to the deception. Turns out that there are demons who were born that way, and demons who just studied to be accepted into their ranks. It doesn’t make sense why a population would accept individuals from a different population if then betraying the host population to favor the foreign one is such a massive issue, but the born demon captures, tortures and then butchers Nikaido’s demon pal. His remains end up sold as pig meat in a butcher shop near Hell. However, Nikaido’s mentor isn’t dead: his original human form, skinless, had remained inside the demonic form, and now that he’s been exiled he has to crawl on his exposed flesh towards home. Brütal. In any case, the spell that had allowed the gay henchman to enjoy a life of privilege and luxury as a beautiful woman expires, and he finds himself having to face his boss as his old man self. The boss, realizing that this guy had deceived him and put his hands and maybe other parts all over him, almost strangles him to death, but in a fit of terror, the henchman accidentally tears the contract that had fallen from the real Nikaido’s body, and that, due to some magical connection, incapacitates the mushroom dude. The henchman should have taken that opportunity to run to the end of the world, because his boss has turned entire gangs into mushrooms and then ate them for far lesser offenses.

Regarding our endearing pair of henchmen Shin and Noi, they are forcefully dragged into a periodic ball for which they have to dress themselves like savages and take part in some pagan festivity ironically to praise demons, who walk around pitchfork in hand pitchforking people if they aren’t dancing with someone of the opposite sex. Shin remembers the last time he was dragged into this festivity, which was ten years ago. That time he had ended up dancing with a solitary, beautiful girl who seemed depressed. He wonders who that girl might have been, and what she’s doing now. However, when he’s greeted effusively by Noi, now a gigantic, cheerful murderer, wearing the tribal costume, Shin realizes that the old girl had been his dear partner all along. When are you both going to fuck, for Satan’s sake? What on Earth are you waiting for, Shin? You ought to have your penis rescinded. By the way, for a society ruled by demons, there’s a conspicuous lack of orgies and shady sexual practices. Step up, Hayashida.

We also have a bit of development regarding one of the secondary characters that hang out with mushroom dude: it’s a skinny girl who got her face ripped off back in the first volume, and somehow that turned her half-retarded. I don’t recall if it was due to the trauma of the event or because Noi botched healing her. In any case, during a meeting in a strip club back in the previous volume, their boss made them eat special hallucinogenic mushrooms that he’s intending to sell, enterprising fellow that he is. She hallucinated her parents and plenty of details about her childhood that she had forgotten in her half-retarded state. That will begin to play out in the next volume, of which I’ve already read around half.

I can’t think of any line to end this review properly, so there.

This is such an amazing volume. The book started off a little crazy but the ending chapter is sweet. Plus, the bonus chapter is adorable! I love all Shin x Noi and Nikaido x Caiman moments.

Upon arriving at the school, Caiman began suffering from headaches. He ventured into the school alone with Nikaido and Natsuki waiting outside. We see a mysterious person carrying a body but it seems to be a hallucination after all.
Caiman wonders if he was actually a sorcerer.

He found Risu's file.

Meanwhile, Natsuki bought food for the gang. They await Caiman's return from the school. Natsuki is such an underrated character. She's so adorable and kind. Nikaido starts suspecting whether Caiman is a sorcerer too.

After finding Risu's file, Caiman starts acting bizarre. We see Aikawa "leaving" Caiman's body and he starts having another series of 'nightmares'. So Caiman is actually Aikawa! We see the day Aikawa officially became friends with Risu. However, this time, Risu's face looks sinister. We see a wrapped corpse on the floor at an unknown location. It looks like a house. Aikawa went on to unwrap it. The corpse is revealed to be Risu. While the body looks dead, his soul/curse (?) hovers on top of the corpse. It looks badly injured and seems to be in a lot of pain.

Upon remembering this, Caiman went ballistic. However, the Risu inside of him seems unfazed.

Nikaido and Natsuki went to search for Caiman. His face was covered in blood. His scales are ripped off and he is much quieter this time. Natsuki found a bandage mask to heal facial injuries. She installed it on Caiman to speed up the healing. Nikaido sent Natsuki off to get Caiman a drink. She told Caiman that his cross-eyes marks disappeared. Caiman looks surprised. Nikaido asked whether Caiman is a sorcerer too.

Caiman shares with Nikaido that he used to go to school there and it is also where he met Risu. Getting his memories back seems to be giving him headaches, however. Afraid of hurting Nikaido, she took him in her arms and said that "It'll be okay". Such a sweet moment between the two.

Back at Hole, Prof Kasukabe and the rest of the gang are happy to be back at the hospital. It seems like Shin and Noi is also interested to learn about the wax figure they found at Hydra Forest. Noi shows interest in knowing more about the "weak points" of sorcerers too.

Prof Kasukabe found the files of the products of his research. He shares this with Shin and Noi. He mentions that the "wax figure" was someone who helped him with his experiment in the past and that the person is actually human. Shin deduced that if the wax man is the same person as the one in Prof Kasukabe's file, the Cross Eyes boss must be from Hole and a human. They still keep their options open, however. It could all just be a mere coincidence. They went to the house where he supposedly live with his grandfather.

Nobody answered the door so they broke in. (I love seeing Noi in her formal wear!!! So pretty!)
They see his grandfather in poor shape. They assumed that he has died. It turns out that he is a magic victim. The sorcerers have made his neck longer. Apparently, his grandson has died. He led them all to his grave. It has been 13 years since the boy died. He was murdered by sorcerers.
They proceed to dig the grave.

Meanwhile, with Dokuga and the rest of the cross-eyes members, they attempt to cover the landlord's murder. They went to her huge mansion to dispose of the body and make it look like a suicide. I love this scene because it's not only hilarious but we get to see the gang in action. We learn about their skills as an individual and how they work together as a group. Saji seems distracted with his embroidery! Haha!

Back at the Hole, the boy's grandfather seems outraged by them digging his grave. He can't do anything but complain as he's bound to a wheelchair. They took out the coffin and it is revealed to be empty. Prof Kasukabe quickly ran to the Hole's administrative office, leaving Shin and Noi behind.

Dokuga and the gang proceeded to try different ways to make the landlord's death looks natural. Tetsujo asked Dokuga if what Risu said about him not being able to kill him were true. He revealed that even if Risu was easy to kill, he can't because of Risu's magic. Before he was able to share more about his magic, the landlord's body, on a noose, fell on top of him. Despite his small stature, Dokuga is able to carry the 400kg landlord on his shoulders. MAN IS STRONG!
Diet Bugs (damn, I need these. jk) came out of the landlord's stomach. Apparently, it eats the food inside of your stomach. Saji completed his needlework and his embroidery ended up as underwear worn by Chota (disguising as Nikaido!!) I died at this part.

At the entrance of hell, we see two unknown individuals entering a meat shop. They are devil candidates. They were given meat made from a 'certain living thing'. DON'T SAY HUMAN!
Their bodies will change once they eat it.

After not knowing the fate of Asu, we see Chidaruma and another creature torturing him once more. I hate reading this part so much as I've mentioned previously in my summary of volume 6 or 7.
Chidaruma turned him back into a sorcerer. His devil body was amputated and given to "store", a bird-like creature with a halo and spidery arms with knives. Apparently, this is the meat that is given to devil candidates. EWWWWW! We see a badly injured Asu, now Kawajiri, on the floor being helpless. His devil credentials have been revoked. He worries about Nikaido as En will find out about their scheme once his power vanishes.

In a small town in the east of Zagan, we see Nikaido and the gang eating. Caiman remains quiet. En staff is seen at the town doing deliveries. They noticed the 'original' Nikaido. They called more men to take out this 'impostor'. Caiman seems to be unable to help the girls fight off En's men. He later revealed that upon grabbing his knife, he wanted to kill them both instead.

The night before Asu turned back into a sorcerer, we see Chota (as Nikaido) at En's mansion. He is wearing his own mask. As Chota was trying to find places to hide his mask, he stumbled upon Nikaido's diary. It starts with an entry of Nikaido slowly losing control of her own actions due to the contract with En. Here, we slowly learn about her past and the reason why she refuses to use her magic through the diary entries (which is such a nice touch).

What we learn about Nikaido
1) She was an orphan
2) She was raised in a shack deep in the mountains by an aunt and uncle
3) She had a happy childhood
4) Kawajiri acted just like her real brother
5) They live happily until her best friend, Yakumo went missing
Chota stopped reading and deemed her stories "boring". Boy, you better read more.

Apparently, En sleeps in the same room as Nikaido (Chota) but in separate beds. All the mushrooms decor, hahaha! Not surprised.

The next day, En shares his new invention, yet again ( he can be overbearing but En is so innovative. It's not a surprise that he's rich and well respected. He used his power and magic to the fullest.) Fujita worries about Ebisu. She seemed to have disappeared after getting her memories when they ate the mushroom sushi back in volume 8. En asked if Nikaido is ready to share her magic, she (Chota) runs off.
We see Ebisu leaving in another direction. Chota proceeded to take a bath and read Nikaido's diary once more.

Nikaido starts learning magic with Kawajiri when she was 2 or 3. She was able to form a cube of some kind? We see her best friend, Yakumo flying. She has the ability to fly (IM JEALOUS).
Yakumo was rescued from a river by an old couple. One day, she found a dead girl. Hunters went around kidnapping sorcerers kids. Kawajiri saved them using his magic. He has the ability to teleport (IM JEALOUS AGAIN). He has second sight and could teleport anywhere.
We learn that Nikaido's foster mother is a gyoza whiz! :') Nikaido is a great cook because of her, I'm sure!

When she turns 4, Nikaido starts becoming stronger and stronger with the help of Yakumo. Kawajiri starts devil training. Nikaido realises that Yakumo was in love with him.
Alone at the house with nothing to do, we see a young Nikaido conjuring her magic smoke. The cube had turned into a larger box. As Kawajiri had advised her to keep on practising to figure out her magic, she started playing around with it. Something bad is set in motion.

As Chota is busy reading Nikaido's entries, En went after a sulking 'Nikaido'.
Unfortunately, Asu's magic wore off and Chota turned normal.
Chota explained what happened to Nikaido to an outraged En. He accidentally tore Nikaido's contract with En and he fainted. In another part of the mansion, Fujita search for Ebisu. She found her leaving with a suitcase. He hesitated to go after her but went anyway. She told him that she's going home. She bid him farewell.

We see Nikaido, Caiman and Natsuki arriving in Berith. Despite being a cross-eyes member, Natsuki has no idea where their hideout is. Caiman isn't himself, still. They came across a Hot Springs and decided to stay there. Apparently, the Cross Eyes gang are working part-time at the Hot Springs too.

Caiman tries to piece everything together by himself. Meanwhile, Natsuki shares with Nikaido that low-ranked sorcerers are unable to make a living so their Boss invented the Black Powder. This is why he is seen as a saviour to those who can't use magic. She refused to share more in front of non-members though.

Back in their room, we see Dokuga in his disguise serving dinner to them. He appears to recognise Caiman. The food has cheered up Caiman a little. Natsuki peacefully sleeps after getting drunk.

Nikaido got to see a glimpse of Caiman's real face but blames it on the booze. She shares her worries. She offers him a job at her shop once he gets his memories back. As the two share a sweet and heartfelt moment together, Nikaido mentions that it was the last night he ever saw him. :"(

THE BONUS CHAPTER

I live for any Shin x Noi moments so this was such a treat!!! :') The dance is such a weird tradition. They all look silly, tbh. I love that there's a note saying that Noi has always been beautiful!
SHE SURE IS.

The volume opens with Caiman happening upon a location that inspires intense, strikingly illustrated flashbacks. Nikaido shows herself once again to be the most supportive friend Caiman is lucky to have. Their tag-along, Kawajiri, has yet to grow on me.

What happens to Asu makes for some of the most gruesome panels in the series (so far!), and the character design of the “butcher bird” is strikingly dark and memorable.

Shin and Noi joining our pals for a scene in the hole was brief but entertaining.

Hayashida’s bonus pages are always delightful, however this time around En dresses his family in some highly questionable outfits.

I think this might be my favorite volume so far! Ties up a lot of character threads and features some great revelatory moments. Also, Chota’s character arc continues to be my absolute fave.

As far as new concepts go, the butcher demon that un-devils Asu is FUCKING RAW and possibly the coolest, creepiest character design Hayashida has come up with. So, so freaky.

Also, my sincerest apologies to whichever Chicago Public Library patron has been reading these behind me, ‘cuz I took my damn time with this one. Sorry don’t hate me

so many questions... yes we did get a few answers but ahhh I want to know what's up with cross-eyes and stuff around Kaiman, I think we did firgured some things out but I am still majorly confused.
Cute scene between Kaiman and Nikaido, I'm so interested in learning Nikaido's backstory, Kawajiri is a darling. The art as always is to die for.

This volume feels a bit transitional, with lots of different threads being tied off, or expanded upon. Still the nice mix of gore, humor, and oddities. I particularly liked the fucked-up cenobite bird-head razor hand creature. Also food, like always.

New characters are added to the story to follow the construction of the background of the universe and of the protagonists. Emotions are here, and while I laugh for some hilarious dialogues or am horrified with gore fight scene, I start to feel attached to those insane characters.

This was the best volume so far in terms of character progression. Caiman discovers more information about who he is, which affects him dearly. It hurts him and scares him. He wonders if he'll hurt Nikaido as a result. Hayashida beautifully portrays this through her art in a unique way. Caiman and Nikaido continue to be incredibly dynamic, and Nikaido comforts Caiman.

Professor Kasukabe and the gang return to The Hole to unravel the mysteries surrounding a strange wax doll they encountered. They go to an older man's house who may have a connection to the wax man. It doesn't go well and leaves them without answers.

Risu and the gang of Cross-Eyes accidentally kill the landlady, and they go to her mansion and try to make her death look like an accident. As messed up as this sounds, this had a lot of funny moments.

Asu gets tortured, and since he failed as a devil, he has to revert to a Sorcerer. Now he is Kawajiri, and he has to try to find Nikaido. Caiman and Nikaido run into trouble because they ran into En's men.

We get some of Nikaido's backstory through a diary that Chota is reading. It is unique in presenting a backstory, but it leaves up hanging because En was looking for Nikaido, but Chota was disguised as a fake Nikaido. Ebisu decides to leave En's mansion to go home. Of course, there was a tragic revelation that I won't reveal, but it certainly breaks my heart if my suspicions are correct. There was an extra story about En hosting a masquerade party, and Shin reflects on a beautiful woman he met there, and it turns out it was Noi. How did he not recognize her? Was it before they came partners? I'm not entirely sure, but Noi is beautiful, and how did Shin not recognize her?

I'm having so fun reading this volume, omg. So well balanced with gore, humor and sweet moments.

TW: bloody gore, nudity, graphic violence, dead bodies

One thing I will said before spoilers down below, this series really knows how to balance the dark and brutal scenes with some lighthearted moments so well. You from gagging at the bloody violence scenes to awwwwing at some cute moments 🤣🤣🤣. My emotions went on a whole ride throughout this volume.

There is a bonus chapter that is so weird but so adorable at the same time. I live for Shin and Noi's interaction😍😍

SPOILERS AHEAD:
I jotted down important points in here because have to in case I forgot about them plus there are some reveals that leads to a mystery yet to be uncovered.
1. The opening scene is so damn good! I love how dark it is as Caiman start to remembers about his past once he is in the Zagan Magic School and we got to know that he is that someone! Ahhh i have a hunch but this is still too early to confirm so will have to read more.
2. There is a missing corpse of a patient thar Kasukabe treates 13 years ago so whats the connection here? Is it someone related to the Cross Eyes?
3. The Cross Eyes group are hilarious, my god. I could not forget how they desperately need to stash the landlord's body and this one dude is more concerned of his side job of embroidery than the actual stuff they were doing 🤣🤣🤣
4. Asu is such a great character and we get to see more of Nikaido's past and we know how he got to know her.

As Dorohedoro, Vol. 9 (Chapters 50 to 55) begins, Nikaido and Caiman, with the tagalong named Natsuki, continue their journey to Berith by way of Zagan. When they approach the “South Zagan School of Sorcery,” Caiman experiences a surge of headaches and perhaps the beginnings of memories. Did Caiman attend this school?

The Cross-Eyes gang continues its rampage, but those actions have long-range consequences. Chota’s masquerade is about to be revealed, just as he has discovered a special diary. Meanwhile, we travel deep into Nikaido’s childhood and the story of her dear friend, Yakumo.

Dorohedoro Volume 9 brings the murky plotlines and subplots closer together. The ways in which the characters are connected is also clearer. With its striking graphics and unsettling visual static images, Dorohedoro gives it conflicts and character relationships an edgy feel throughout. It is now an even more invigorating read. This crazy manga and its world is the place for readers to be.

I haven't read this manga in a while, and I'd like to read it completely this year. As for this volume, I enjoyed Caiman's final conversation with Nikaido, as well as the dance story in the bonus chapter. But I think my favorite chapter in this volume is chapter 53: the graphics, the setting, and Asu.

We’re finally getting to see what Nikaido’s childhood was like with Asu helping raise her. What happened to Asu made me sad because he was just trying to protect his sister and the way they had him hanging looked so painful. Chidaruma is a PUNK !! Chota is annoying, but so damn funny! His commentary while reading Nikaido’s diary was top notch. Not going to lie, I do have a problem with the way the landlady was dealt with because it was very distasteful the way they handled her body and I feel like it was supposed to be funny because she was fat. Also, I DID NOT need to see Ebisu topless. I hope there are less moments like this moving on because they don’t hold any value to the story and I really love these characters.

p.s. this is the best cover yet!! it’s so befitting to Chota.

Dorohedoro #9 is all about the past of key characters. Caiman, Nikkaido and Asu all have elements of their past explored. Professor Kasukabe, Shin and Noi dig into the mystery of the wax doll in the woods that the Cross-Eyes worship, and which is connected to a person from The Hole.

Dorohedoro continues to impress. The plot draws readers in, we want to learn more about the characters and there's plenty of silliness and violence to keep us entertained.
