Toriko enlists the help of Zebra, the ravenous monster of the Four Kings, to capture Mellow Cola. With Coco and Sunny refusing to help, it’s up to Toriko and Komatsu to spring Zebra from jail and keep him from killing and eating his way through a vast and treacherous sea of sand to Gourmet Pyramid where Mellow Cola awaits.

Finally, the last of the four Heavenly Kings is introduced, Zebra who is in prison. He is an awesome character and very very strong!

We were teased that there are FOUR Heavenly Kings amongst the Gourmet Hunters.
After meeting 3, we now have NUMBER 4!
AND HE IS AN A-HOLE ON THE SIDE OF THE ANGELS!
HE'S NEW VEGETA!
HE'S NEW SASUKE UCHIHA!
HE'S NEW KANDA YU!
HE'S NEW SEASON 1 GARY OAK!

The prison they made for him and other people who have committed crimes against food (and people) is honestly brilliant and I'm surprised there isn't more Rule 34 of the warden...
And while Zebra has animosity for anything that lives, he likes our diminutive chef buddy cuz all scary people need some kinda morality pet. And while he's built exactly like our beefy main character, his real powers is his powerful, roughly insane manipulations of sound, almost like a Green Lantern Ring, but sound instead of light (Rot Lop Fan for you GL megafans).
Here's hoping they can get out of the harshness of THE DESERT and all its various beasties that wanna eat their eyes like jujubes.

They got to the Gourmet Pyramid rather quickly. I seem to recall some filler episodes around this point. There are a couple of details that differ from the anime too, like the length of the episodes dedicated to Toriko, Zebura, and Komatsu making the crossing to the Sand Garden. And that thing about toriko's cheek scar which was not in the anime. Another point to note was that their fights and feasting in the Gourmet Pyramid itself were more gory. But overall, time seemed to pass more quickly in the manga than the anime.

A fun point to note is that Toriko's and Zebura's power level and power expenditure were presented as calorie measurements, kind of like what Dragonball did way back when with their scanners. But I don't recall it getting mentioned anymore after this arc. Guess it was yet another thing that was brought in as a feature, but subsequently abandoned again. And oh, all the monsters here capture levels in the mid double-digits now. As I mentioned in an earlier volume, these numbers used to be considered extremely "high". Now, knowing what's coming, these numbers are nothing.

Honestly, was not a fan of the character of Zebra. There was a lot of build-up to him and what we got was less than I wanted. Sound is a cool power. Also, the final chapter continuing to talk about calories non-stop was horrendous. Good besides those major complaints.

I like the introduction of Zebra, and the pyramid which is obviously inspired by ancient egyptians is interesting as well.

Zebra's a fun character

Komatsu's plot armour is kind of getting to me, I wish he became at least a bit stronger so it's not all left to luck and the food "choosing" him

I liked the second part of this volume rather than the first part. And the introduction of this character is cool.

One thing I like about Toriko is huge scale of everything the characters encounter. It's always fun to see.
