Vampire Knight can increasingly be summarized with one word: confusing. The plot is confusing - who is good or bad; what's going on? The characters are confusing - who is who - it's hard to tell people apart. And yet, I keep reading and mostly enjoying this series.

I like that Yuki is coming back to be the strong girl that she started out the series as. She lost her way when Kaname first changed her back into a vampire and revealed her history. We saw Yuki's strength really emerge in Volume 15. It's more subtle in this volume, but Yuki seems increasingly sure of herself, even when she's not sure of Kaname or exactly what's going on around her.

But really Yuki took a back seat in this volume. Much of the volume is about Headmaster Cross going after Kaname himself. Headmaster Cross is a fascinating contradiction. He's a vampire hunter but a man devoted to peace. He came across as silly at the beginning of the series but is increasingly serious. He went from being Yuki's virtual father to being a near stranger and is now becoming involved in her life again.

The other main plot arc is the blood pills that Sara's company developed. Yuki suspects that something is wrong with them and she's right. They make vampires who take them forget their dedication to peace and cooperation. Sara's trying to make slaves, either people who will serve her directly or indirectly by creating chaos. Sara has gained a lot of power at the school in a short period of time, but people are beginning to catch on to her.

The major development in Volume 16 is not so much a development as a question. What is Kaname doing? Of course, we've been wondering that for a long time, but after a few volumes where he seems to be pure evil, there's a hint of doubt. Yuki realizes that Kaname did not commit a few murdered which were attributed to him. That's not to say he didn't commit others, but it opens a door to see some layers to whatever he's doing. I'm sure curious. And that's what keeps me coming back no matter how odd this series is.

It was interesting that the blood tablets had enough of the source's/sources' essence that they sparked a little bit of their memories in the vampires that took them, and that they were bitter on top of that. Sara uses that knowledge to create blood tablets with her blood in them, which are more palatable and that also have a "side effect" of enthralling vampires who take them to Sara.

As has happened at least once before, Hino seeded an idea into the manga (essence in the tablets) not very long before implementing that idea in the main plot (Sara's tablets). It feels kind of weak, using a mind control drug (more or less) as a plot device, as opposed to a more direct competition between Yuki and Sara for the "hearts and minds" of the night class. As is, Yuki was able to solve the issue without violence, which is in keeping with her character throughout the series, since she hasn't killed anyone since the series began.

Yuki and Zero seem to be re-establishing their relationship in Kaname's absence. Yuki even drank Zero's blood when Kaname told her not to drink from anyone but him. (vampirism as sexuality metaphor: ) They seem a little calmer around each other, which is nice to see. If Zero's turning into a type E, he's keeping his cool about it really, really well.

I don't care about all that much about the world building, or any of the larger-scale conflicts (purebloods, hunters, Cross Academy, et al.) compared to how the blood/love triangle is going to pan out. Hino states in this volume that she knows how many volumes she has left, so I'm assuming that the end of the story will make more sense and show a bit more attention to plotting/planning than the rest of it has. We'll see!

This volume left me confused. There is no clear image of what is going on. Where is the story going and why?! We no longer know!

Characters are acting out of character Cross and Kaname are at odds, Yuki's vampires are all over the place and she and Zero can't figure out what is going on but trying to act indifferent around one another! toss in some new blood tablets and we get this volume! Yuki is the only character i liked in this volume. She is really coming into her own.

As usual, the artwork is amazing. While I love the talent shown, the story's level of degradation from early volumes has left this series as a bottom rung read. I will still continue reading it as I feel I have invested too much time to not know what is going on. With only 3 volumes left to the series I am very concerned about a reasonable ending.

This volume had a lot of things happening, but at the same time was a forkful of slow, meandering villain-esque moments, running around, 'discoveries!' that only shock the main characters and leave the audience going "yeah we knew about that in like volume 12, get with the times," and more bloody, freaking set-up.

I really can't wait until the ball gets rolling and we get to the whys behind all of this madness. I just want to know what's going on! Grr.

Also, Zero, Yuki? Stop pretending you don't like each other. You're both so desperately trying not to get into each other's pants, you'd be perfect candidates for random angry sex. (Which of course wouldn't happen, because this is a high school drama! Damn!) As it is they're just going to having random angry biting/drinking moments which is kind of like sex! Get your mind out of the gutter, Carissa!

Sara-you freak me and everyone else in this series out. Seriously, you make bugs seem less creepy by comparison. And what the heck did you say to Zero? I refuse to acknowledge this shipping possibility, but your interactions are getting weirder and weirder. JUST TELL ME ALREADY!

Yuki, why are you such a spaz? I love you, but sometimes I have to agree with Zero when he calls you stupid. No wonder no one includes you in plans

Zero, I love you. You're so angsty, it's simultaneously heart-breaking and hilarious at times.

Maria, you need to stop having such a weird crush on Zero. NO ONE CARES. Not the audience, not Zero, and not even anyone else. It's just really awkward having you around...

Kaname, you know what you have to do. There's a perfectly good well around here somewhere. Just fall in for me, will ya?

This cover also makes me feel kind of awkward. I know there is a Zero/Kaname shipping, but most of the time I pretend it doesn't exist...

PREDICTIONS!

I want to thank Viz for the opportunity to read-and-review this volume. I was really excited when I saw this up on Edelweiss, since this is one of my favorite manga series. But, that's where the fun ends with this one.
I feel like I read this, but also like I didn't. Since Viz's watermark was a big white square in the center of each page on this volume, I feel like I missed 1/3 or more of the story, and cannot quite completely explain the story in my review due to that. But, I will still do the best I can.
-------------
I want to note that I will probably re-read this and re-review it after I move to Spokane with Tony, and kind find a finished copy PB at the library. That being said by someone who NEVER re-reads is really something.
-------------
What I carried away from this volume is that Kaname Kuran, head of the purebloods, is wanting to kill all of the pureblooded vampires. I am not sure why, since I did not read V15. But, Headmaster Kaien Cross, and his daughter Yuuki Cross, are wanting to keep Kaname from achieving this task.
Also, Sara has been chosen as Night Class President, but she has ulterior motives. She's kind of lazy, so she enlists Yuuki with the job of Dorm President. But, that is only so she can have more time to have her "new" and "improved" blood tablets infiltrate the Night Class's dorm and spread amongst the NC students so that she can control them.
Sara's pills contain a "special" ingredient, though. One that is not allowed in the dorms....her own blood. When Yuuki finds out that "secret", she shares her blood with everyone, as to "cure" them.
--------------
I'm not sure what to think of all this, but I do NOT like Sara Shirabuki. She is rude and manipulative to the Nth degree.
On a sidenote, in the Author Notes in the sidebar, Matsuri has announced that she knows how she wants this to end at how many volumes. She wets our appetite for curiosity there, but fails to feed it.
--------------
This volume was provided to me by VIZ Media, via Edelweiss, in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed here are my own.

hey yuki successfully did a thing! good girl!

...it's kind of sad my expectations for this series have slid so low. >_>

but hey, the plot is pretty clear right now? which is a plus? except for whatever's going on with kaname, i don't understand that and i get the feeling matsuri hino has no intention of explaining anytime soon

also if yuki/zero is going to remain at this standstill i think hino ought to just save the page space to let yuki do more things. leader!yuki! with the opinions and the decisions and the actually doing things in line with those decisions! i so prefer this to them intensely looking at each other and talking about how things remain exactly the same

how about this, zero can come back whenever yuki needs to feed and when he decides to start behaving like a person again. fair?

I'll be honest, I'm over this series. I found that this series kind of went off the rails and got too confusing me for. And I'm even sad over it! The first 8 or so books in the series I was OBSESSED with. I totally dug them and really wanted to binge the whole series. Then the story went onto a random path and I just couldn't get into it anymore. It's kind of upsetting! I think Matsuri Hino is SO good! She's great at storytelling and manga. The pictures are STUNNING. The illustrations are one of the best parts of this whole series. I find it difficult to find such great illustrations that are consistent.

I am totally confused on what's going to happen but I will finish this series. Will she end up with Zero or Kaname? I'm betting Zero now, but that's because Kaname pulled a 180 and is completely different. I almost want a little timeline about what actually happened because things changed fast.

Overall, this series is gonna be the death of me but I'm gonna see it through.

2 out of 5 stars.

Finally, Yuki and Zero seem to be re-establishing their relationship during Kaname's absence, THANK GOD!!! Also, hihihi, sneaky Yuki even drank Zero's blood despite Kaname previously telling her to not drink from anyone but him. Honestly, YOU GO GIRL!!!
Frankly speaking, I don't care that much about the world building anymore, as well as the large-scale conflicts between the pureblood, vampire hunters and the entire Cross Academy.
What I really care about is how the love triangle and the blood bonds are going to play out hihi.
I just liked witnessing how Zero's restraints and control regarding not being close to Yuki are finally starting to crumble.

Full of action and teasers, Volume 16 of Vampire Knight moves the plot forward but leaves its readers with lots of questions. Kaname is still missing, but we have come to learn that he is on a mission to annihilate all pureblood vampires. The only question we have is: why? Why take this drastic step? What possibly could he achieve by killing other purebloods and what does this mean for Yuki now that she is one? From previous volumes, we have been accustomed to Kaname's strange, ambiguous plans. They are never straightforward as they seem.
Meanwhile Yuki is having trouble in embracing her leadership role. While she has lost a popular election to Sara Shirabuki as class president, Yuki is appointed by Sara to do the busy work of overlooking the Night Class. Not only is Yuki trying her best to keep the Night Class under control, she is also struggling to make sense of her attraction to Zero. Though they both have claimed to cut ties with one another, it is evident that they both share strong feelings that they refuse to admit. The panels featuring Zero and Yuki alone are my favorite to read as their tension flies off the page.
As much as I like trying to sort out the very tangled love triangle in this series, the person who stole the spotlight in this volume is Sara Shirabuki. Quiet, creepy, and extremely cunning Sara has managed to take control of both vampires and humans by creating tablets that are made using her blood. When vampires and humans take these "new and expertly" designed tablets, they become addicted to the blood and compelled by Sara to do what she wills. The only way to defeat these tablets is to come another pureblood vampire's blood. Like many other villains in the Vampire Knight series, Sara also has ulterior motives. She has convinced Zero to be on her side by whispering some of "Kaname's secrets." I'm anxiously awaiting the release of Volume 17 to see what Sara told Zero and what will happen if Kaname does return.

yuki has reestablished the night class at Cross Academy. with Kaname gone and the hunter society on her back, she is constantly being held under the pressure of being a pureblood vampire. now there is a new pureblood vampire at Cross Academy, Sara shiribuki. she has secretly made a new blood tablet that makes vampires forget that they can't attack humans. now with the out of control vampires and the troublesome Sara shiribuki, Yuki is trying her best.

yuki is in the knight class and recently accepted Sara shiribuki into the night class. yuki is very suspicious of Sara but doesn't take action until the tablets come out. many vampires act up and almost attack some day class students, but Yuki stops them just in time. in doing so, she also takes the tablets away from them, they freak out and start running at her. in rage, they then drink her blood in this enraged state. after the trance has worn off, they feel heavily guilty for what they have done. now Yuki is trying to stop Sara, and create a tablet of her own to stop this madness.

my opinion on the book is that it gets more dramatic each page. though some books are almost the same, they have entranced me into the series. since the way they ended it in this book, I feel that the next book is going to get better. I do wish that some things would happen in the book, like how Kaname will just come back, and Yuki will respect zero a little better. these books make you hope for the better, and have you stuck to the story till the end. this book surprises me and I hope for more.

The rating and review are conclusion for all of the volumes. Except for the synopsis.

Okay..... I AM SUPER DUPER ANNOYED. True, it's not that bad but the way this story end? Gosh, I cannot. Let's just say I'm not really satisfied with how it ends okay? I don't know how to say it. I didn't enjoy Twilight last time. I didn't really enjoy Vampire Knight too. Maybe vampire story is not really for me.

Hm, talking about the characters in this story. I could say Cross Yuki, the heroin, is a strong character in this story. Kiryu Zero, who is her companion, seems pessimist. The opposite of Yuki which makes them good together. I am not saying it is too bad that you won't enjoy it as this story is categorized hot among other manga.

But as for me personally, it's rather average and the way it ends just annoyed me. However, I'm satisfied that Kuran Kaname is handsome. :P

Synopsis for volume 16:
Kuran Kaname finally came to the academy to kill Sara Shirabuki. Can Kuran Yuki managed to at least stop Kuran Kaname?

The story become more complicated.Kaname wants to defeat all of the pureblood vampires and he betray vampires. He defeat purebloods helped by Ruka and Akatsuki, but Kaien against them though all of Hunter Association let Kaname do it.

In the Cross Academy,Sara deploy blood tablet that made from her blood use Ichijo's pharmaceutical division. Her goals are make all vampires serve her,so she will be queen of vampire. But fortunately Yuki's blood make vampires that consume Sara's blood tablet return to normal again.

In this volume, the distance between Zero and Yuki become more far and actually,I really don't like it!
I hate Ichijo follow Sara too, that's so bad that he become fall in love with her.Beside that,Shiki still consume Sara's blood tablet because he wanted to be with Ichijo!I like his faith to Ichijo, but I really dislike that he leave Rima to join Ichijo and Sara.
Yuki become more strong, that impressed me and make me sad at once

Seriously... When I first started this manga, I really LOVE it. But now... It just made me a LOT confused. :O I really don't get it anymore why Kaname is doing what he's doing... And so Yuuki needs to kill him cause he's doing bad stuffs.

I really like Kaname. I even named my laptop "Kaname". :) BUT he's being bad now. I know there's a reason although it's not yet out in the open. Not fully. Just maybe a gist of it. Or am I just plain stupid for not realizing it?! >_<

UPDATE: I just finished reading the latest manga. Still on Volume 16... Ugh. This people ALWAYS, ALWAYS leaves me confused. LMAO. Sigh.

AND OMG! OMG! Noooooo... Don't, Kaname! :( Holy crap. This manga could really put you on edge. >.<

Man, the last volume was so clear and good and I didn't have to read every page twice to figure out who was doing what to whom. This one was back to the usual somewhat confusing mess. Or maybe it's just me. Not a whole lot of interest seems to happen in this volume, but there's definitely some setting up for things to come. But...I'm really kind of getting bored with this series, and I'm not sure that I'll even bother reading the next one when it comes out. I miss the early days of Vampire Knight, before Kaname was bad and then good and then bad again, and when Zero was a little less angsty, and Yuki was going around being loud and bossy and cute. All the confusing vampire politics? Meh.

This volume is one of the better ones where Yuki doesn't act TSTL. She actually acts like a leader even though she lost the class president elections for the Night class. We more tension with Zero and more of Sara's machinations. There are interesting developments regarding Ichijo and Shiki. We also get more information regarding Kaname's plotting which seem to have begun a lot earlier than previously revealed.

This is actually a pretty exciting volume with a lot of developments and a lot going on. We also have the seven month cliffhanger as the manga goes on a 7 month hiatus. I love the little quick drawn cartoon that she draws at the end announcing the 7 month delay. I really really love her humor even if I get frustrated with her storytelling at times.

Can I just say that no one scares me like Sara Shirabuki? She's creepy, quiet, calculating, and worst of all, she has a plan... a plan that's coming together! I'm terrified every time she shows up! Eep! Finish her, Kaname! FINISH HER!
I must say, though: 1) what the heck is Kaname up to?? And 2) what did Sara whisper in Zero's ear?? Also 3) Shiki. Dude. What are you doing?!
November can't come fast enough!
June 2013: REREAD
Okay, so when I first read Vol. 16, I was completely lost and confused. However, after rereading it just now, I found that it made a lot more sense and was much more enjoyable. Therefore, the rating now stands at a 4.5 stars. :)

Struggle for Relevance
Yuki finds herself overshadowed by Sara upon the return of the Night Class, feeling increasingly marginalized in the absence of Kaname.

Desperate Temptation
With her need for blood growing urgent and Kaname gone, Yuki faces a difficult choice when Zero offers his own blood, testing her loyalty to her former lover and the promises she's made.

Tangled Loyalties
Yuki's decision to drink from Zero presents a challenge to her commitment to Kaname and ignites tensions in their complex relationship, as she navigates the delicate balance of her emotions and allegiances amidst shifting dynamics within the vampire world.

I think I would have liked this plot better if it had started sooner. Like, Sara manipulating everyone and sending Yuki into a tizzy is great...but now there's this reveal that Kaname is (once again) hiding stuff from her and that's a bit *yawn*. But the blood tablets she created making the students into zombies and Yuki's blood being the only thing healing them? Solid. Kaname and Kaien's confrontation? Epic. Yuki and Zero have a quasi-moment? Ehhhh. All the tension in the love triangle has fizzled out and is dead at this time and even the moment under the tree didn't give it that spark of life it tried to. I'm interested to see how this wraps though in the next 3 volumes.

Some of my issues with this series continue, but I can happily say I'm once again understanding the story line. Matsuri Hino has some emotionally charged scenes which are beautifully rendered. If Vampire Knight Vol. 16 is any indication of Yuki's shift in character, I hope the changes keep on coming in future issues. Oh, and that cliffhanger ending has me really wanting Volume 17. It's good to still be a Vampire Knight fan gurl.

I think I am finally seeing a glimmer of coherence in Vampire Knight's plot, and it's kind of nice. It doesn't forgive all the meandering angst we had to suffer for the past several volumes, but it does make it pretty much worth the read. Vampire Knight will always be fluff reading with bishonen vampires and twisted love triangles, but at least we're going somewhere (I think?) at long last. What's not to love?

It's really hard to stop and start reading this series because of all the back stories and side characters that are introduced and explained early on and then pop up randomly volumes later. Not only that, but this particular volume seemed to jump around a lot from person to person, conversation to conversation, and place to place. By the end, I think I was starting to get back into it, but we shall see!

Vampire Knight is a graphic novel about a world of vampires and humans. It focuses on a school where both coexist but humans go to day classes and vampires go at night. The humans are unaware of the vampires existence at the school. The main character is Yuki Cross. She was a vampire turned human and returned to being a vampire. There is quite a bit intrigue at the school but mostly it deals in the vampire world. This episode is one of the better ones.
