by Youka Nitta The first art book dedicated to Yaoi in America! From the creator of Embracing Love, Kiss of Fire contains colorful illustrations and paintings that Yaoi fans will truly love.
Youka Nitta (新田祐克 correct pronunciation: Yuuka Nitta) is a Japanese manga artist.
Her illustration debut was in 1994, in 小説Charade. She is one of the few Boys' Love manga-ka whose works are enjoyed by both straight women (the main target audience) and gay men. Her manga debut was Be-Boy's 1995 release of "Groupie." Recently she temporarily quit writing manga after a scandal involving her plagiarism of many magazine photographs. According to The Yaoi Review (2009-12-31), she is back with a continuation of an ongoing manga to be released in English in February. Her moe point is older ukes.
Bought this one from Book Depository on July 4th and just arrived safely today, yippie!! XDD, along with the two first volumes of the bunko (two or three books packed in one book) version of its manga (Embracing Love).
Well, I had seen most of the images in it online and it's really beautiful indeed, especially the Winter Cicada posters and their wedding's scene illustrations.
But what's best is you can find several short stories (colorful!!) and some sweet love letters from Katou to Iwaki. ^__^ The publisher even gaves all the letters written in paper form! Not some thin paper, yet not so thick...with a soft-textured and matte-like surface and it's colorful too. Complete with the envelope (just one envelope, anyway), lol.
In the last short story in this book, Iwaki's reaction when he reads Katou's love letter for him just made my eyes teary a bit, hence the reason of 4 stars. ;)
"I'm gonna be with you...always." -- Katou
That simple statement really moved my heart, made me feel so happy for this couple and wish their love story will never end. I may sound silly or ridiculous for some people... you know, ultimately happy for some fictional character's love story. :p *Ohh, how I wish they were real peoples instead.*
Well, that's because Embracing Love/Haru wo Daiteita is the bestest yaoi manga that I'd ever read in my life. And to people that will never or even try to read this manga, it's their loss because they won't know what they miss and they will never know its awesomeness. ;p
Dany & Dany had an art book done so their many characters could be side by side for all to see, it meant almost all their collected works could be viewed by the readers - and they lapped it up. It's pretty much the same here with Kiss of Fire. Here is an art book that has cute couple Iwaki and Katou who had readers following their four volume love story, Embracing Love.
Nitta has become a famous name in yaoi circles with her strong line art that brings out the realism and the simplistic colour scheme and striking, equally simple backgrounds. From beautiful portraits of the couple to scenes with both of them in clinches shirtless, almost naked. Kiss of Fire is more tasteful than titillating with only one image that could be considered sexy; however Iwaki and Katou seen shirtless is enough for most, the sight of their tight pecs, slender waists and jeans clad stomachs are part of the reason Nitta is so popular, the other is the way she draws the characters faces as she is well aware of Japanese male beauty; slicked hair, narrow jawlines and beautiful eyes that always seem to sparkle.
The interior art is in colour and the images cover several sizes with some that are full sized and fit between two pages, unfortunately, this obscures some of the images I thought were my favourites. This aside, the book ties in with the rest of the Embracing Love series and is for fans who have already read the novels and want to extend their Nitta collection.
Verdict: It isn't so surprising that many will want to get their hands on this as it's one of my favorite art books.
Youka Nitta’s Iwaki-san and Katou-kun are brought into vivid color in this gorgeous oversized picture book. Although there is sexual content, as well as shots of them in various locales, clothing and poses, what is mainly emphasized is the camaraderie, friendship, trust and deep love between these men. By turns, erotic and sweet, molten and placid, what emerges is the contentment of two lovers committed and at peace, with themselves and each other. Not for nothing have many fans wished that these two men were real people instead of fictional characters. This artbook is a must-have for any yaoi fan and Nitta fans in particular.
The images in this artbook have stayed with me for a long time. I absolutely love the art and vision of the artist. However, it has been hard for me to find this book. I recently came across it and bought it. I later found out that images and textures had been taken from copywritten sources without credit. The artist was sued and is no longer able to find much of this kind of work because of it.
Short story connected to Embracing love series is about Iwaki and Kato shooting some magazine on the island. Yes tiny swimsuit and sex on the beach, what else do you want? Ilustrations are so lovely and definitely this book is worth of buying.
Superb and sexy art and little strips in Nitta's inimitable style. I love that it tells a story as well as offering great pin-ups and poses. I use it as a reference and artistic inspiration as well as yaoi to ogle.
