The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - The Movie Storybook by Paddy Kempshall is a retelling of the first Hobbit movie An Unexpected Journey.
The book retells the movie in a simple summary that even children can understand. It's loaded with beautiful full page photographs and smaller ones in between. A few of the photographs look like paintings which offers a nice feel.
I haven't read the original Hobbit books yet, but plan to this year. I personally loved The Hobbit movies which are continuously playing in our house. This book is certainly one to keep around. One of my favorite characters in The Hobbit movies is "Kili" played by Aiden Turner.
I'm really looking forward to picking up the other two movie storybooks, Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies.
“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey: The Movie Storybook” It looks like early publicity shots and still images, and a tentative script overview was sent to Harper Collins prior to the theatrical release in anticipation of immediate sales. Some aspects of the story changed by the time of the film’s release.
This book consists of a short summary of The Hobbit (nothing special and leaves a whole lot of important stuff out) and some nice pictures of the movie. I finished the book in 10 minutes, nothing special.
What's not to enjoy about this version of The Hobbit. I absolutely love this book and it's perfect for when you want to revisit the world of Lord of The Rings but are very short on time. Definitely want to track down the rest in this series.
This book is, obviously, aimed at children. It's probably not wise to read it before you see the film if you don't know the story of The Hobbit already and don't want to be spoiled about the film. Several of the book-to-film changes are outlined in this storybook, some of which I knew and others that I didn't, so do avoid it if you don't want to be spoiled.
The text is very simplistic, bordering on cheesy at times, and most of the page is actually taken up with large images. Unfortunately several of these images seem to have been printed too dark. For example, this beautiful image of Gandalf and Galadriel is printed so dark that they're almost in silhouette.
For me, this book was useful in prepping me for what book-to-film changes to expect. I wanted to go in to the film with my expectations tempered so I'm not too disappointed. Some of the changes made I can understand, others I'm really baffled as to why they've been done. More action? In several cases I expect they'll be the same kind of liberties that Peter Jackson took with the LotR films, which ruined those films for me.
The storybook doesn't cover all the film plot, as there's more that I know about from images and trailers, so it doesn't totally spoil the film for you.
I was writing a detailed book-to-film comparison of the changes that are mentioned in this book (with images!) for those who want to know the details without buying the book, but then firefox crashed and I lost all my hard work. Super annoying. Maybe I'll come back and re-do that sometime.
For some reason I can't fathom, my girlfriend bought this the last time we went to a used book store. This is one of the silliest things I've ever read. I literally don't understand why it exists. All this book is is a summary of the movie's plot with screencaps from the movie. What purpose does that serve? Why not just watch the movie? It doesn't have any behind the scenes information. It doesn't tell you anything new. I'ts just...a summary of the movie with screencaps. Do I really need to say anything more than that?
3 stars [Film] Use: 2.75; Layout: 3.5 Slightly better than the average film companion. High detail photos (all but a couple) with a readable summary appropriate for children but not boring to the adult.
I love The Hobbit and all but to me that book was nothing like the movie. Some parts where but some weren't witch made me really mad because The Hobbit is like my favorite movie.
