I like this "I Am..." biography series from Scholastic, and because of its brevity, elementary readers will as well. Not only does the author provide details about the rise of her subject, George Washington, to the presidency, but she also describes his formative years and some of the difficult parts of his life. Biographies such as these that briefly mention a demanding mother or the loss of a step-son or step-daughter or even explain how Washington was reluctant to become president and eager to return to Mount Vernon allow readers to see the human side of figures in history who may seem so exalted that few can relate to them. The brief introduction from the point of view of Washington himself gives readers a glimpse into what mattered to this man. Having illustrations sprinkled throughout the text adds to the book's appeal, but sometimes the physical features of the figures seem out of proportion.
