Offering a detailed history on Slovakian architecture, this analysis covers the social, economic, and urban contexts of housing estate construction within the city of Bratislava. The book focuses upon the second half of the 20th century, individually analyzing each prefabricated residential estate in terms of its urban structure, architectural aspects, and balance between built-up and free areas. Featuring a rich array of illustrations, this examination also includes unique maps of each location, drawings of apartment buildings and standardized public facilities, and a sophisticated selection of historic photographs.
Wow this has changed my view on the typical eastern european prefab estates. There’s quite a few interesting elements that the poor realization have always prevented me to realize and appreciate. Counterintuitively, the first and the oldest developments of 1956-1960 have been of higher social and aesthetics value then the later ones, as deteriorating economic situation and downsides of authoritative planning played an increasing role. A good read.
