The colorful cast of characters includes Perlefter's four foolish Alfred, with his predilection for sleeping with servant girls and widows and boasting of the venereal diseases he contracts; the hapless Karoline, whose interest in math and physics and employment at a scientific institute seem to repel serious suitors; the flamboyant Julie, a sweet, pale, and anemic girl who likes any man who is inclined toward marriage; and the beautiful and flighty Margarete, besotted with a professor of history. Written circa 1928-30, Perlefter represents Joseph Roth at the very peak of his literary powers—it was penned just after the publication of The Silent Prophet and just before his masterpieces Job and The Radetzky March .

About the author

Joseph Roth, journalist and novelist, was born and grew up in Brody, a small town near Lemberg in East Galicia, part of the easternmost reaches of what was then the Austro-Hungarian empire and is now Ukraine. Roth was born into a Jewish family. He died in Paris after living there in exile.

Πρώτη μου επαφή με το συγκεκριμένο συγγραφέα. Μου ταιριαξε πολύ.

Μιλάει για έναν άνθρωπο, που όπως δείχνει και το εξώφυλλο ελίσσεται και προσαρμοζεται σε κάθε συνθήκη προς το συμφέρον του. Πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία.

Ο Περλέφτερ χαρακτήρας χαμαιλέοντας μπορεί να προσαρμοστεί στα πάντα και φυσικά συνεχώς επιβιώνει. Ένας άνθρωπος που θα μπορούσες να του βρεις όλα τα λάθος χαρακτηριστικά, τσιγκούνης, περίεργος, υποκριτής, άνθρωπος χωρίς συναισθήματα που ότι και να γίνει δεν θα έχει καμία διαφορά για εκείνον, διότι παραμένει σε όλα ουδέτερος και αδιάφορος. Αν και είναι ημιτελές βιβλίο που δεν κατάφερε να ολοκληρώσει ο συγγραφέας μου άρεσε η ειρωνεία που χρησιμοποιεί σε όλο το βιβλίο. Πόσο εύκολο είναι για τον άνθρωπο να μην παίρνει θέση για να μην στοχοποιείται και του ταράξουν τη ζωή του.

This unfinished novel (abandoned, not cut off by early death) reads often like preliminary notes for a novel, rather than a novel itself. Often quite funny and showing Roth's well-developed observational skills and wit, it is still not the place to begin reading Roth. Go to The Silent Prophet, The Radetzky March, Right and Left, Flight Without End--fine books all.

Solange es Menschen geben wird, die sich den Luxus der Gleichgültigkeit leisten können, so lange wird es auch gemäßigte Menschen geben. Sie hieß unglücklicherweise Karoline, und das betrübte sie und lähmte ihren Mut den Männern gegenüber. An den Bildern schätzte er mit Recht ihren Umfang. Perlefter sagte gerne: »Kolossal! So ein Gemälde!« Er schilderte eigentlich nur den Umfang. Sein höchstes Lob lautete: »SO groß wie die Wand!« Er sprach gerne von den Grausamkeiten der Bolschewiken, und man kann sagen, daß er davon lebte. Er gefiel allen Menschen, die sich über Revolutionen ärgern. Es ist sehr angenehm, gerade diesen Menschen zu gefallen, denn sie sind es, die Geld haben. Er sprach oft, gerne und fast leichtfertig über seinen Tod. Denn erstens fürchtete er sich nicht vor dem Sterben, sondern er freute sich auf das Jenseits, in dem er sich ganz genau auskannte, und auf seine Existenz als Geist, die er gesichert zu haben glaubte.

Perlefter is a fragment, an unfinished novel that was found in Roth’s papers, which has been recently translated and published. This novel ends abruptly and has a few narrative hitches that Roth would have likely fixed in a later draft. It is also all character sketches, with no real plot or dialogue. But it’s like all of Roth’s novels. He has a sure eye for the telling detail, and the way lies built on other lies created his Hapsburg-era society. And this what makes even this fragment entertaining, and worthwhile. I have read almost all of Roth’s 25 novels and collections of reporting that have been translated into English. If something comes along tomorrow, I’ll read that. If you are new to Roth, read his masterpiece, The Radetzky March.

Compré este libro porque tenía que matar tiempo en un café, y fue una excelente opción. Ambos relatos -como bien anticipa el título- abandonados abruptamente muestran la historia de un pueblo a través de sus habitantes, las vidas que atraviesan el espacio y sus interacciones. Con un humor excelente y una escritura suave y placentera.

Απολαμβάνουμε τον Ροτ. Απίθανος, συγκινητικός, διασκεδαστικός. Τεράστιος συγγραφέας. Αλλά κι αυτή η εκμετάλλευση του μου κάθεται στο στομάχι. Τρεις την ώρα μισά, ημιτελή, σχεδόν ολόκληρα γραπτά του εκδίδονται κι εμείς με λαχτάρα τρέχουμε. Κύριοι εκδότες κάντε και λίγο κράτει. Μόνο εμένα έχει κουράσει όλο αυτο;

Εξαιρετικό όπως όλα τα βιβλία του συγγραφέα που έχω διαβάσει μέχρι τώρα, και σκεφτείτε πως παρέμεινε ανολοκλήρωτο. Οι χαρακτήρες του για άλλη μια φορά αληθινοί ο δε ήρωας του βιβλίου είναι ένας παγκόσμιος χαρακτήρας που συγκεράζει αρκετά κακώς κείμενα που όλοι μας μπορούμε να αναγνωρίσουμε και να συσχετιστούμε. Έξοχο!
