Funky Knits

Rate this book
Knitting comes out of the parlor in this edgy collection of modern designs for knitters who want their personalities to come through in their projects. More than 30 patterns, including a cozy hoodie, a key chain, and an easy-care cactus stretch a knitter's repertoire beyond simple scarves and hats. The themed sections take intrepid handcrafters from an "Urban Playground" to "Home Comforts" while an introductory chapter covers knitting terms and techniques so novice knitters can skip the fuss and get right down to the knitty-gritty. A variety of yarns are used, fueling mix-and-match creativity, and there is even a market tote to knit from old plastic grocery bags. Always unpredictable and never square, the new projects in this book will spark creativity in hip knitters everywhere.

Gosh awful. I don't think I've ever started a review so negatively, but don't waste your time here. Luckily, I put it on hold and then checked it out from the library, having never flipped through it. As the clerk was scanning it, I asked, "Is that a Young Adult book?" (I would have declined checking it out if it was a YA title.) The book is poorly organized and designed. Why is the yarn used in the projects not listed within the directions but lumped together with all the yarns in the back of the book? The photographs are terrible and the models are, I guess, doing their best.

My kids and husband loved this book. Because they don't actually knit. Knitted knee pad covers, a knit wallet chain, a sweater with purposeful dropped stitches (in no discernible pattern)? Perhaps I'm not the intended audience. Maybe I'm not funky enough?
