There were a few good insights but some of the stories were just too drawn out. Still a good alternative to a traditional devotional.

God shows himself in myriad ways; beauty, serendipity, shock & awe, conversation… even in the contrast between His own holiness and our tendency toward sin. But are we awake? Do we notice? Should we?

Through plumbing the depths of experiences from her own life, Margaret Feinberg invites us to reflect on mis-shapenness in our own lives. Are we harboring bitterness, too? How is our prayer life, really?

In a day when many Christian writers care mainly for their ideas, Margaret obviously cares for her craft, which I find incredibly refreshing. I especially loved the way book elicited an easy-flowing attitude of prayer and reflection, like freely wandering the garden with God (rather than feeling like a note-taking student). The very first evening I found myself differently responding to my own memories and observations, captured by the wonder that would normally pass me by.

I especially love the way Margaret sets life contemplations on a firm respect for who God has revealed himself to be in the Scriptures and in creation. She experiences life just as we (her readers) do, shares deeply from her humanity, and shepherds us toward the Father as she struggles to hold tight to Him herself. Martin Luther once said that “We are all mere beggars showing other beggars where to find bread.” For me, Margaret's writing exemplifies the spirit of humility and the spirit of showing inherent in this quote.

More specifics about the book itself...

While I both enjoyed and was moved by Wonderstruck, I might have had my expectations a little out of place regarding how awed I would feel in the reading of it. Other than the initial chapters, rather than leaving me feeling awed, it left me ready to be awed. Which is truly fantastic, but not what I was expecting. I think reading the book more slowly and with a group might have changed this experience a little.

That being said, there is a special section provided expressly for this purpose. The first chapter of the "Bonus Tracks", Thirty Days of Wonder: A Challenge to Experience God More gives small, do-able exercises that provide us a way to act toward the thing we wish to be (more awake to God's wonder).

If you enjoy reflective writing and going along on the author's journey, this book is for you. The language is lovely and you'll find yourself gasping and laughing aloud. I suspect this book would be best read with others who sincerely want more of God's wonder in their lives. Discussion and practicing would be most accessible in that context.

If, on the other hand, you prefer theological treatise to the contemplative style, this may not be the book for you.

A thoroughly enjoyable read I will soon re-read with a group. 4.5 stars.

Who doesn't need to be more alive to the nearness of God?

What a different life we could all lead if we just stop and wonder at the beauty in both the everyday and spectacular things that surround us in any moment.

Having survived a horrific automobile accident 9 years ago I had committed myself to trying to do this with the "extra" time God graced me with on this planet. I am very cognizant of moments and beauty that I should appreciate most days as a result.

Being a believer in the value of this mindset I expected to appreciate Margaret's work with this book. I never expected to be so newly inspired to be even more aware of the wonder we can experience if we are just grateful in every moment.

Love this book.

I love the word Wonderstruck, and I love the idea of living wonderstruck to the workings of God. In fact I made it my word for the year. This book was nice and it had some nice ideas and suggestions to it. In fact, that is the word that describes how it was for me... Nice. I always appreciate someone who is willing to open their life to me, especially in writing. But nothing rang the bell of awakening in me or left me wonderstruck.

It was ok. A really good premise, but I wish it had been more practical. The title is really inviting, but I found myself getting lost in the author's stories.

I was quite excited to find a discounted copy of Wonderstruck by Margaret Feinberg. I had heard an interview with her and had wanted to pick this one up for a while. Unfortunately the book did not live up to my anticipation. It's a nice, breezy read, but it failed to really grab me as the reader. The chapters are built around this concept of being Wonderstruck by God's power, grace, forgiveness, and presence, and follow different parts of her own story. For as much as I appreciate getting to know her (which always helps in understanding why an author writes a particular way and holds their particular voice and beliefs), the storytelling aspect fails to go deep enough to really leave an impact. It tackles some deep, and at times dark, subjects, while at the same time looking to instill us with a deep sense of joy, happiness and child like wonder. There are some chapters that stand out more than others in regards to this journey, but where I kept hoping the next page would leave me absolutely taken with this allusive hope and stuck on the her passion for life as she so clearly illustrates, instead it was too easy to simply kept reading and come to end with not much of a lasting impression.

I found her best chapters to be the ones that captured her more eccentric characteristics, such as the chapter titled "the magic in the table". While I might not have connected as much with her get back to nature mantra (I am city boy at heart... that is where my spirit comes alive), chapters like the aforementioned allowed me to enjoy the things that made her tick. And those moments offered me chance to get closest to her idea of living wonderstruck.

Our bookclub enjoyed this book that led to discussion about the Wonder of God. I especially enjoyed hearing each members take on the various chapters and where each of us find that wonder. I think we assume and forget how individual each of us really are. There is a 30-day reflection portion of the book. I am still working on that part, it can be overwhelming to accomplish each activity/response daily. The author created playlists to go with each chapter, which I realize is kind of the hip thing to do. Her tastes are very eclectic ranging from Sarah McLaughlin, Sting, One Republic to Sidewalk Prophets and Casting Crowns.I used some of her selections and added my own to create a playlist for a situation I am going through right now. That playlist has allowed some moments of reflection as well.

"Too many of us play and pray it safe. We allow our aspirations to stay in our heads, our goals to remain barely outside our grasp. Life becomes a series of unrealized hopes and dreams. Rather than engage in the fullness of life, we remain on the sidelines and pass up on uncounted opportunities. Our fears become greater than the hope of the One who came to bring us abundant Life." This sums up the book perfectly. Five stars. A new look at Christian joy from an unique Jewish viewpoint.

Margaret Feinberg is a phenomenal writer and I've loved each of her books that I've read. Her writings draw me closer to knowing God in a more intimate way. "Wonderstruck" does just that! My senses are heightened to recognizing God's glory and soaking in moments that in the past I would have pushed aside. I highly recommend!

Love Margaret's heart for God. Identified with the notion that we, as Christians, are often slumbering in the presence of the Divine. In other words, lazy. It was an easy read and fun to learn more about Margaret, after she had recently spoken at our church's women's conference. Loved the story about her grandfather - a Bible-believing man who led people to Christ over gaming tables in Vegas!

This book spoke to me on many levels. The chapter on prayer was especially meaningful and I am going to try her "three word prayers" this Lenten season. I am hoping to get some members of my Bible study to join me in this form of "giving up prayer" for Lent.

"God extends endless invitations to encounter Him, yet too often we sleep straight through."

Well that sure grabbed my attention. God's wonder surrounds us all day everyday. Wonderstruck is a manual for helping us find that wonder. And in Margaret, we have a mighty fine guide who's passionate about enabling and teaching us in how to experience God more.

With sound Biblical instruction, some delightful stories that take across the globe via the Scottish highlands, Alaska, and the Colorado mountains, we get to see first hand how God's wonder is all around us.

Whether it's in nature, developing new friends, diving deep in prayer or observing the Sabbath, Margaret talks us through her own experience of learning to appreciate all God has already blessed us with. And how much more He has to share, if only we'd open our heart and eyes to receive it.

The book also comes with a Thirty-Day "activity guide" for reflecting on the ideas Margaret addresses to help embed the healthy habit of living with our eyes and hearts wide open.

If you'd like to experience God more, then this easy to read book is a great starting place for your journey to begin.

NOTE: I received the ebook version of Wonderstruck having pre-ordered a paper version prior to its release. This was one of the gifts Margaret provided to all those who pre-ordered.

My Thoughts:
I love this book for two main reasons.

It spoke to my introvert, reflective personality.
It reminded me to get out of my comfort zone-which is where I tend to gravitate.

In the above video, Margaret commented, "people going through motions of faith." The life of a Christian should not be methodical. Nor matte-colored. Instead, the Christian life should be a vibrant, joyful, "abundant" life.
Feinberg believes it is during the "wonder of God" of His creation, that we have a "spiritual awakening that makes us curious to know God more." And we "know God more" by reading His Word. I love Feinberg's expressions that Bible verses come "...alive like a pop-up book...."
I've been guilty of living a Christian life with out really seeing what is around me; instead, I'm overwhelmed by concerns and cares. My eyes are inward focused and I've lost sight of being God focused.
When reading and studying the Bible, I don't want to read God's Word as if it is merely ink on paper, because God's Word is alive and actively at work in my inner person. God's Word is nourishment and strength, correction and wisdom, mercy and grace.
After reading Wonderstruck, I came away with the emphasis that Feinberg is reminding me to wake-up and be amazed at God's creation and His Word; and to let go of my pseudo safe existence, and be secure in God and His will for my life.

Wonderstruck is a delightful read in an easy narrative style. Spiritual insights are not tagged on like ornaments, but rather as inevitable conclusions drawn from personal experience—an experience the reader now shares.

For example, after becoming newly acquainted with the tradition of Lent, she felt a desire to give it a try by giving up something—but what?

“That year I felt an overwhelming sense that God asked me to give up something rather odd: prayer. . . . My sense was that God didn’t want me to give up all prayer, but lengthy prayers. Giving in to the peculiar sacred echo, I committed to offer God only three-word prayers until Easter. The spiritual practice proved more difficult than I imagined” (Margaret Feinberg, Wonderstruck).

The insights Margaret Feinberg gains from this experience are really worthwhile. And I love the idea of three-word prayers! We all tend to waste words with God by reciting formulas and prayer-speak. Intentionally selecting the words that get to the meaning of our prayer is a discipline we could all benefit from practicing.

The book was loaded with practical insights gained from the trenches of life. The chapter on forgiveness held many gems of truth. Wonderstruck is definitely worth a read.

I met Margaret Feinberg back in 2013 at the Q Ideas conference in LA and was taken in by her sweet, charming personality and fascinating story, which is why I decided to pick up her book.

The premise of Wonderstruck is fairly simple -- God is far more active in the little moments of life than we often give Him credit for, and if we just open our eyes, we'll see Him working and moving in more ways than we could ever imagine.

The short version is that this book was okay, but not great. While I don't generally like to compare one book to another, it felt very similar in concept to One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp, which I absolutely loved. I'm not sure if it was the writing style, the time in my life that I read it, a combination thereof, or something different, but this book just didn't really do anything for me. It was lovely reading about some of the unique experiences Margaret's had, but with nearly every lesson/point for each chapter, my general reaction was, "Yes, I know, I've heard this before."

All in all, not a terrible read by any means, but just missed the mark with me.

For me, Margaret has a way of putting my own personal struggles to words and creating new and beautiful imagery for well told stories of the bible. She reveals what God has taught her through her own struggles in a personal and open way, while connecting it to truths found throughout the bible. I personally always find encouragement in what she has to say, and often find myself laughing or frowning along with her.

I know some mentioned this was a light and easy read, but I encourage you to go deeper, and take it slow. Really grasp what she is trying to say. I myself would get distracted by what we going on around me, or go off in my own mind pondering her words and have to stop, back track and read a section again and again to make sure I got it.

But more then anything, take the moment to explore the biblical stories yourself as she walks through them, she references every one in the back of the book.

I hope to have the courage to take the challenge in the back of the he book... Perhaps I will try it for lent.

Have you forgotten how marvelous the Lord is? Do you need a reminder of all the Lord has done? This book will be a great reminder as the author does an excellent job of showing just how wonderful the Lord is. Wonderstruck is exactly how you will feel after really reading and studying this book!

I gave this book 5/5 stars! I found the book to be encouraging and very well written. The language used was easy to understand and the information flowed from one nugget to the next with no interruption. I would recommend this book for anyone who needs a lift in their day or in their life! Read and be wonderstruck!

I would like to thank the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.

I didn't really get into this book in the first few chapters but by the end, I was "hooked." I love how all the "coincidences" in Scotland confirmed her faith. While reading this book, two sermons in church coincided with what I read in the book later in the week! The first one was about how if God takes care of the birds, that surely he'll take care of me! The next one was the story of Martha and Mary in church, then in my son's devotional, then my devotional, and then touched on in this book too! Eek! Got it God!! I need to be present in the moment, and not worry about all the fine details when praying to you or having company over!! Loved the story about her grandfather, Cactus Jack too!

"Creation is a live theater that invites us to experience and comprehend God more."

"With enough time, we can convince ourselves the prisons of our past were built by someone else, but unforgiveness is a cage we construct ourselves. If we choose to stop focusing on our inward pain and instead scan the perimeter, we discover the door to freedom hangs wide open thanks to Christ. The choice is ours"

Just a couple quotes from there. With beautiful messages from restoration, forgiveness, gratitude, friendship, enjoying the little things, etc Margaret paints a beautiful picture with her words. Definitely a book to read and take your time to let the words soak in you to reflect the amazement of God.

I would say that I liked about half of this book. The first half is wonderful, especially as I really needed the reminder to be awestruck of God and His creation is to be like a child, with child-like faith and wonder. Yet it seems like just as she was getting started, she got bogged down telling other people's stories that did not have much to do with being 'wonderstruck'--they just seemed to fill the pages. In any case, being filled with wonder was something I needed to hear when I read this, and I also liked her Lenten idea of saying 3 word prayers--the 'letting your words be few' idea. But I can't say I can recommend her book completely.

I desperately want to awaken to the Nearness of God and to be Wonderstruck by Him in all things. Feinberg's book is a wonderful reminder of the fact that God paints the world as He does specifically to show His wonderfulness and how very much He loves us. I find myself being Wonderstruck more each day and to revel in the joy of others being wonderstruck! Just this morning, my husband walked from room to room, window to window throughout our house, enjoying the snow and exclaiming over and over again, "Wow!" I was Wonderstruck by the beauty of the snow, too, but it was so much fun watching my husband as he was Wonderstruck!!!

I was so excited to be able to read Margaret's book in advance of it's release. What an encouraging book. Margaret shares personal experience in her usual transparent and creative writing style. She reminds us to look for the wonder around us each an every day and gives us some specific "areas" in which to find that wonder. In addition to her personal experience, and in typical "Margaret style," she also takes us to the Scriptures to see the wonder of the mystery opened to us in the sacred page.

Enjoyed it just as much the second time...I highly recommend this book.

I had high expectations for this book. The title, Wonderstruck, Awaken to the Nearness of God, really excited me, but chapter after chapter left me still searching to be wonderstruck and disappointed that this was simply a nice light read. It is the story of Feinberg's journey through wonderstruck moments and events in her own walk with the Lord, and while I did enjoy her stories, and there were a few moments of profundity, overall it appeared to be an effort to build on Ann Voskamp's One Thousand Gifts, which I did love and which continues to leave me wonderstruck.

Amazing -- I'm constantly amazed by the amount of new authors I stumble upon while paying a visit to my local library. I didn't know what to expect when I first picked up the book, but the cover and title drew me, as did the reviews on the first page.

Wonder Struck, prayers for pixie dust and the reminder that God's glory is all around us. We would see it if only we look for it (and sometimes, God takes joys in surprising us right out of our socks). That is what Margaret Feinberg offers the reader. A reminder and a gentle call to come back.

The chapter that I'll remember is being Wonderstruck (love that word) with restoration. The story of Blind Bartimaeus who didn't choose his blindness but had a choice as to whether or not he was going to accept and enter a new identity. From the Hebrew "son of filth" to the Greek "son of redemption." I also agree with Margaret's premise that God is at work all around us and we need to tune in more than we do.

Lovely, thoughtful book - filled with well-told stories that link up beautifully with insightful Biblical exegesis. And, by using the word "exegesis", I've probably turned some of you off to reading this, for which I beg forgiveness.

I'm still mulling over the truth that Margaret Feinberg presents so clearly here - that God is closer than we realize and glimpses of His presence & power are awaiting us in so many moments.

I plan on reading this again...

I started this book several months ago after a friend from Bible study highly recommended it to me. It took me a while to get into it. I found that every time that I read it, I found some little tidbit or story that really touched me. It was this way throughout the entire book. The author totally has a different way to view life and the little things that happen that we may just ignore or not give our full attention. I highly recommend it!

Love how Margaret helped me to open my eyes and my heart to God in new ways through this book. I was reminded of God's deep love, provision, and so much more. I highly recommend this to anyone, but especially to those who are having a hard time seeing and feeling God in their lives.
