Dee Brestin (http://www.deebrestin.com) is excited about seeing lives changed. Her most recent book is Idol Lies where she tells how the Lord set her free of manipulating people and healed her relationships. Her book The Friendships of Women has sold over a million copies and was recently released in a 20th Anniversary Edition. Falling in Love with Jesus has sold over 400,000 copies. Dee has written twenty Bible studies, the first of which, Proverbs and Parables, has been in print for over thirty years. A graduate of Northwestern University, Dee has studied with Covenant Seminary. She is the mother of five grown children and lives in Wisconsin.

This book was truly life changing. It made me come to realize the idols that I hold onto. Ones that have hurt and or destroyed relationships. She breaks it down to three major idols and how to acknowledge them in your life at the moment they are controlling your thoughts, speech, and actions. This book is overflowing with the truth of Scripture to back her beliefs. Excellent!!!

Facing the Truth About Our Deepest Desires is the subtitle to the book. Author Dee Brestin has written another great book to help women in their relationship with the Lord and themselves.

Do you long to be loved? Do you feel unloved? Reading this book will show you that those desires are good but need to be directed at the Lord and not to things on this earth. The author stresses that trying to find your happiness by filling your life with things of the earth will only make the longing stronger. By direction your longings to the Lord, He will fulfill those needs with His love.

I gave this book 4/5 stars for a couple reasons. Where I did like the writing and found the author to be very open I just did not feel any connection. I felt more preached to then talked to. I do however, think the book is helpful and would recommend it to a friend who was having issues of feeling unloved or alone.

Very convicting. Points out idols that we run to instead of Jesus to meet our deepest needs. The idols are: power/ control, affirmation/ approval and comfort/security. Of course none of them will ever satisfy us and they are Idol lies. Everything we truly need is found only in Jesus. This is a book I will read again. Filled with lots of truths to chew on and think about.

A totally different type of read for me and one I was introduced to by a moms bible study I recently joined. The challenge with this book was it was very repetitive and kind of drawn out. Separately I was relieved to hear that others in my new group that have more experience with books in this genre also struggled. I do look forward to the groups next pick and continuing to broaden my horizons!

Idol lies led me down a path I hadn't looked at before and gave me a new perspective to weigh my decisions. Like many have said, I don't have statues that I worship or a fancy car in the garage too good to let anyone else use. But, the idea that my heart attitudes have some idols lurking within me was a jolt. I wanted first of all to get rid of them and move on! I have found it is not as easy as that and appreciate the teaching that came through Dee and the videos. This is an area of sin that I always want to be on the watch for.
A powerful message. Be sure not to miss the accompanying videos on YouTube (Look up the author, Dee Brestin). They really helped me to zero in on this message.

When I bought this book my intention was to read it slowly and complete the bible study section in the back. I just couldn't do it, I couldn't read it that slowly! Although I marked up the book and started the study, I'll have to go back and re-read it in order to finish the study. Hooray! So glad I bought this book, because it's a keeper, a re-reader, a mark up the pages kind of book. Excellent. And I think this book is universally applicable; guys check it out, this is not just a women's book. One of my top 3 books thus far in 2013.

This is a book that, if the principles could really be applied, would really change a life. Dee Brestin takes a hard look at the idols in her own life, and in the process, helps the reader identify what things are eclipsing God as first love in our lives. The writing is simple, yet it draws you in, and helps you take a good hard look at what holds us back from being free. With discussion questions in the back, and free links to video testimonies, this would be a great resource for women's ministry in a local church setting.

When I first started this, I was blown away! It seemed very exciting and convicting. I started to see half way through that it is a lesson I've heard before, just dressed in different wording. The videos that go with it are a must-see and really add a lot and I appreciated being able to read all the accompanying Scripture in the daily work that supports what Dee is saying. I am an "over-thinker", though, and found I had to take a step back, because I wanted to just add another obstacle to my path by worrying what idol was at work. Otherwise, it was a great study!

This book was well-written and discusses a topic that we are not honest about much of the time. What is deep in our hearts, the idols we hold on to. We talk many times about surface idols, and those are easy to admit. But, the heart idols - those deep, sinful desires that we all have - are much harder to face and deal with. Brestin writes honestly and candidly about how we must identify our heart idols and that we can overcome them only through God's grace.

This is a challenging and life changing read. Brestin beckons you to peer inside of yourself to reveal the hidden truths that are covert. Her willingness to be transparent and share her own personal stones makes apparent her heart to help others. It is definitely a must read for all those who desire a deeper relationship with God.

Currently reading. Easy to read, but not easy to apply. Difference between this book and others on idols is author's complete transparency which encourages me to be honest with God. Praying I will allow His word and this book to help me to stay focused and face the things which I would rather not face.

Although trying my best to derive helpful thoughts from this book, it just seemed altogether too preachey, too holier than thou, and too magically serene. Perhaps if I'd been in a different frame of mind, this would have resonated differently with me. As it was, I had to stop 2/3 or the way through this book explaining how every single desire and thought in a women's head is a false idol.

This was a good book that really stretches you to ponder over your life. It was a great book to read with a book club and talk each week about where you are making progress, where you need help, etc. I really liked the resources she cited throughout the book as well. Worth your time, but it will take time to read if you are looking to make positive changes in your life.

This is the most convicting book I have ever read. I'm coming back to it later and doing the corresponding Bible study with a friend. Perhaps I will add to this review. But for now, this was a good way for me to come to terms with things I had never thought of as my personal idols, things keeping me from experiencing the full love of God.

Beautiful book! I feel like it is one that I should read again and again as new "idols" are always rearing their heads in my life. It is a book where you get out of it what you put in, so with a bit of effort it can definitely help you to reflect and make changes to better glorify God with your actions and words.

Very eye opening. Enjoyed this book!! It's a life changer.

If you need God to reach inside you and show you things that you may have never considered than read Dee Brestin's book "Idol Lies!" My heart is so open to the Lord and His love for me and my love for Him that I can't contain it, nor do I want to!! I praise God for using her as a catalyst to speak His words!!

This was ok. The author assumed we knew a lot more about heart idols than maybe one would expect. If you use her website there is really no need to read her book. I found her website redundant to the book. You don't need both.

Strong Bible Study Material

I read this book on my own rather than doing it in a Bible study. However, I still found it to be very moving and thought provoking. I do wish it went into more detail about the other idols. It feels lopsided to me because control is covered well.
