THE BESTSELLER JOB

After bestselling author Gavin Lee is killed by a hit-and-run driver, his estranged brother Brad appears out of nowhere to claim the estate, cutting off Gavin’s girlfriend and secret collaborator, Denise. Luckily, Denise knows Gavin had a good friend in Eliot Spencer.

It’s not money Denise is worried about. Gavin had intended to donate much of his profits to human-rights organizations, and Brad has no plan to honor those wishes. So the team sets out to use Brad’s own greed to get him out of the picture.

But soon Denise notices she’s being followed. Is it Brad? Her boyfriend’s mysterious informant? Or his killer? Whoever it is, Nate and the crew will have to read between the lines if they’re going to close the book on this case.

I was really interested in reading this because a) I've written fanfic for Leverage (Parker and Hardison for the win!) and b) I love books set in the publishing industry. I was delighted to find it at my local library, but I ended up being bitterly disappointed.

I was very confused by the continuity. It's set in Boston and after Hardison gets buried alive, that much is clear. However, Eliot refers to Hardison and Parker as a couple, which doesn't happen until after the Season Four finale, but Parker is still acting like Season One Parker. "The Grave Danger Job" was a major turning point for the character and while she was still quirky, she was infinitely more connected to the world around her from that point on. The Parker in The Bestseller Job basically serves as comedic relief. Sophie was also back to Season One with her insistence on her acting career, which she largely abandoned in the later seasons (see the Season Two episode "The Fairy Godparents Job"). Eliot has some kind of romance novel, star-crossed, lovers thing going on with the client. Hardison and Nate are the only two characters that skewed close to how they are portrayed on the show. Oh, and the van should have been Lucille 3.0.

Aside from the characterizations, I think the author tried too hard to incorporate elements from the show into the book. It was like he had a checklist and he was just moving down it. Flashbacks, elaborate visual scene, Eliot calling something "distinctive," Hardison's orange soda, Nate's flask, Parker leaping off something, Sophie "no one knows my name," there was nothing new. I suspect the author finalized the book before the end of the series and was trying to avoid writing anything that would be later contradicted by the show. As a result, we are left with a derivative book with an overwrought plot and crappy characterizations. The only thing I thought was handled decently was the publishing bits, which is probably what the author has the most experience with.

If you are a Leverage fan, you are likely better off trolling Fanfiction.Net for better stories, and if you've never seen Leverage before, a) WHY NOT? and b) You won't get this as it's aimed squarely at insiders.

1. MASSIVE continuity issue - if this is after The Radio Job (references the time machine), but still in Boston, shouldn't we be having vengeful, self-destructive Nate? And if it's after The Last Dam Job, how are they still in Boston? IT BOTHERS ME.

2. Since when has Eliot ever had a (not for a con disguise) goatee? Did I blank it from my memory somehow?

3. Ugh for awkward and overwordy descriptions. More in-character than The Con Job, less than The Zoo Job. In fact, this kind of makes me want to go give The Zoo Job an extra star. It seems like only one of these authors was a fan of/bothered to watch the show.

But! Better than The Con Job, and it had a couple of funny moments. It also had more than a couple bad-fanfiction-description moments, though, and the "twist" is...not really unexpected if you have half a brain cell to be working with.

I love and to this day still binge watch the series. It's one of those old school heists where everything comes together and makes sense at the end. The story stays true to the characters that I fell in love with in the series. There's humor and its just a simple fun read. I especially liked the part where the put together a book in less than a day.

I thought "well, the plot twist is so easy to see." Well, the plot twist is that there is more plot to be twisted for later and that I am naive for assuming Greg Cox's adaptations of my favorite shows will stop taking me by surprise at this point. Greg Cox always nails the character voice and this is no exception. This is well written and the "flashbacks" are so good. I wish this was an episode just so I can enjoy it all over agin.

Still a fun romp with a strong handle on the team’s voices, The Bestseller Job gets this rating because I ultimately enjoyed it. I love the team, I love the sheer level of trickery they get up to, and most of all, I love the clever twists they rely on to get out of tight spots. It’s deeply satisfying to watch it all pull together, and for it to be in character to boot.

That said, this installment bummed me out. While it was more Eliot-centric than the other two, it didn’t do anything with his character that excited me so much as it played a very old song: Eliot hooks up with the only woman outside the Leverage team. And since this seems to be set somewhere in S4 by my best guess, it’s…an outdated approach at best.

(I could probably write an essay on how this is the time the OT3 is developing into something concrete, and the fact that Eliot’s hook-ups are basically no longer mentioned on-screen at this point in the show, but we won’t dive that deep today, or this will stop being a mini review.)

Plus, a major part of the book relies on the Leverage team writing an entire book in about 48 hours. As a group. And slamming it through an ally acting as editor still in that time frame. Suspension of disbelief only goes so far, even for the Leverage crew, and this one…broke me. 😵

So overall, fun concept, but some shaky execution left it a little lacking compared to the other two tie-ins.

I have to admit that I actually started with this book. I mean, apart from looking at the dates of publication, which I did not do, I had no clue that this was the LATEST to be released. Well, the fact that it says that in the blurb should have probably given me a small hint, but I was more interested in finding out what the book was about than actually paying any attention to when it was released.

So I have been a fan of leverage, the show, since I first discovered it on Ion television a few years ago. Around that time, I believe it was in its fourth season on its mother channel. Just from watching the commercials, I knew that I was gonna love it. I mean, a bunch of former criminals turned vigilantes for justice. What's not to love. And I think everyone has their own favorites. My brother's is Hardison, because he is just like him. My mom's is Eliot, in her words..."DAMN!!" And I actually have two people fighting for top spot in my eyes. Parker and Eliot. Mainly because I love their skills. Due to my adoration of the show, it seemed only logical that I read the books.

I think the main reason I read this book first, after much deliberation between the three, was because it was about a book. Weird, right? I thought it was cool that the team was going to be working to get back the rights to a bestseller from a moneygrubbing individual who wouldn't do anything unless it benefited him personally. Their client? The girlfriend of a man who was rundown after a book signing. But there is infinitely more to the story than meets the eye. Rumors of a possible sequel story will bring to light a character thought to have been dead all these years.

There are fights, break-ins, late night writing sessions...everything you would expect from a leverage episode, just in book form.

The only thing I did have kind of a critique about was a couple of times I felt that certain characters did not seem like themselves. It is hard to explain, but while most of the book felt familiar character personality wise, there were moments when the character's personalities just didn't feel right.

All in all, though, this was a wonderful read. I LOVED IT!! And I will absolutely read the others.

TV tie-in books are often not very good. This one was a fast read and a good story, but much of the dialog was wooden. I tried to imagine the words spoken by some of the “Leverage” actors. It didn’t work. There’s two cons here. The first one is to secure legal rights for a deceased author’s best seller. The second con is against the author’s killers. If you are a “Leverage” fan you might enjoy this book where the team comes up against professional killers and spies. My advice is to buy the “leverage” DVD’s instead. The show is worth a second or third viewing.

My expectations for this book were set mighty low - a TV tie in? Can't be that great. But, that just meant that I was pleasantly surprised. For someone who is a fan of Leverage (and has missed the series since its cancelation), this book just hit the spot. It brought me back into contact with my favorite characters and the characters as they were written felt very true to form. The heist was interesting and read exactly like I expect a Leverage episode to unfold. Enjoyable - I think I'll read another.

Pick a book that was gifted to you

18th book towards my 2021 reading challenge, this book was gifted to me for Christmas one year. My mind is utterly blown at how off this was from its source material; I've never been as happy to DNF a book as I was with this. As a dedicated fan of this show, and as I'm sure others are too, I'm very familiar with these characters - at the time of writing this, I'm rewatching the show yet again. Believe me when I say I could have been reading about entirely different people. It does not read like a tribute to the show, it reads like glorified and badly written fan fiction (of the non sexual kind I might add); then again, even some fan fiction is better written than this... whatever this is. I imagine the author was given a detailed outline of how an episode works and detailed descriptions of our main characters. Then I imagine that he tore them up and did his own thing instead. Now our characters? What a number he did on them:

NATE
If you're going to include Nate's iconic "Let's go steal a..." quote, get the wording right.

SOPHIE
Sophie's actually not too badly written, but she still feels like something of a caricature of who we actually know; she feels like a typical posh English woman, if a little snooty at times.

ELIOT
This characterisation is the one I take the most issue with. Now we all know Eliot had a couple of flings on the show, but he was never a womaniser; at one point he has a Russian girl on each arm and while on the con, he's apparently thinking about getting nookie with both in the lost & found? Give me strength. Plus Eliot would never pursue his dead friend's girl out of respect for said dead friend, he just wouldn't. And since when did he hate Hardison's guts? They annoy each other is all. Finally, Eliot DOES NOT SPORT A GOATEE. At least the author had the decency to include his classic "it's a very distinctive style" quote. And get the wording right.

HARDISON
Speaking of Alec, the author chose to write his dialogue like he adds 'girl' to the end of everything he says. He sounds like a drag queen; don't get me wrong, I love me some drag, but Hardison doesn't talk like that.

PARKER
Parker is literally written like she's a moody teenager who hates everyone.

This book should not have been thought of, let alone published. I will not be reading the others.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

I'm finally going through my tv, film etc. tie in library owned book list, to add more older basic reviews. If I liked a book enough to keep then they are at the least a 3 star.

I'm only adding one book per series etc. I'm not going to re-read every book to be more accurate, not when I have 1000s of new to me authors to try (I can't say no to free books....)

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

“Leverage” remains one of my all-time favorite TV shows, so when I found out there were even MORE books set in the universe, I couldn’t resist. The Bestseller Job by Greg Cox held everything I love about the series up the to same standards as the script writers and I love him for it.
The crew, made up of Nate, Sophie, Eliot, Parker and Hardison, are working together to get the rights back for a bestseller novel. The author was killed unexpectedly, and the girlfriend, unable to lay a legal claim to it, lost the rights to the novel to the author’s estranged, criminal brother. More and more details come to light as the story unfolds. Each reveal is as good as the last, with the flashbacks situated in exactly the right places to make the story come together.
Cox does a great job with the characterization of the whole crew, especially Eliot’s relationship with the author and the girlfriend. Parker and Hardison don’t steal as much of the show this time, but Parker delivers on her usual crazy antics. The writing is great, the plot is great and the novel is great. Even if you’ve never seen “Leverage”, this is a mystery and a thriller that you’ll enjoy.

I didn't have much hope, as tie-in books are rarely worth it, but I love and miss this show, so I figured why not try out the "official" fan fiction. Because lets be honest, that's what this is. You could practically see the author sitting back in his chair and patting himself on the back after writing certain lines. ("Second thoughts strafed him like sniper fire...") and character descriptions could be downright purple at times ("...aware of her exposed saffron tresses"). Parker is portrayed as an idiot (a common problem even with the show writers at times) and the author has an obvious hard-on for Elliot, but Hardison is pretty spot on (I for one liked all the Star Trek references, but it almost felt like that was the only area that the author knew about/spent the time to google, and it was laid on a little thick in the last bit.)
It was hardly the worst tie-in book I have read, and I got through it, which says something. But I will not be rereading it.

Gavin Lee is finishing up a reading of his new book Assassins Never Forget when he is struck and killed by a mysterious limousine. What his killers weren't banking on was that Gavin was old friends with the hitter of the Leverage crew: Eliot Spencer.

Gavin's girlfriend, Denise, gets in touch with Eliot and the job is off from there. The rest of Leverage's crew, Hardison, Sophie, Nate, and Parker are on the case. Initially, the goal is to get Gavin's literary rights back from Gavin's greedy and sketchy brother, Brad, and into the rightful hands of Denise. But after Brad is kidnapped, it becomes clear that there are far darker forces at work. The Leverage crew has to work quickly to untangle the web left by Assassins Never Forget and its true origins.

Fan service, globetrotting, costumes, a horde of zombies, and even Sophie's biggest fan all make their appearances turning The Bestseller Job into as enjoyable of a Leverage con as ever there was.

I loved the TV series, so reading this is a visit with friends I've missed. Reading vs. watching delivers the characters in a very different way, but it also fleshes them out when each has his/her POV scenes. This particular caper interested the writer as well as the reader in me: 'stealing' a best seller for a client who's been cheated out of the royalties. The basic caper, of course, opens up a much more complex can of worms, and our heroes are suitably tested. If, like me, you miss the series, this book is a good way to reconnect.

I could hear Hardison in this book. Poor Eliot, the ending was kind of sad for him. I don't understand why he can't ever get a happy ending? This book was sad because this is the last one and I loved that show. The books were fun. Tarantula was pretty cool, but the part about Gavin dying was sad. I loved the twist that they did to Beria. The zombie match-up was hilarious! It just makes me sad that this will be the last Leverage book ever.

I'm giving it a 4 just because it really has the best red herring ever! Hilarious! LedMAO so hard in the last few chapters. For hardcore Leverage fans, continuity is probably a huge issue (based on reviews,) and I have to admit, it likely would have also bothered A LOT me had I read this when my memory was super fresh. I still see something off, but I chose to look past it or wouldn't be able to enjoy any of the books. xP

DNF at ~33%
I really wanted to like this after being so disappointed by The Zoo Job. I have fond memories of The Con Job, and was hoping for another fun read.
But it was so badly written, and the romance was annoying. Harper was written so badly, and so were Eliot and Sophie.
After giving it a good 100 pages, the plot didn't even hook me enough to put up with the writing. It just couldn't make me care.

It was very interesting

I liked it. I liked all 3 books, I like how you get to see in the characters head, really get to know what’s going on in there. Books are good like that. Give me 5 seasons of books and I’d read them all!!! I still like that each book was written by a different author. I think all 3 books were great. Thank you!

Hopefully I will be able to get the new leverage: Redemption series that's just finished on Idb TV but if not or until then this was a good way to read about my favourite team of Robin Hoods and get a few surprises in the novel too. Its just like the TV version only you get more into the leverage team than the TV shows could.

Out of all of the other novels in the series, this one had the best final payoff, but I had trouble with the relationship Denise had with Eliot given the fact that well, her husband and his friend died not too long ago. It just feels rather insensitive from the both of them. Also Brad and Larry, are both so very unlikable for different reasons.

Picked this one up at my favorite used bookstore because Leverage was my latest guilty-pleasure Netflix binge. It's not the deepest stuff out there, but it's a quick, entertaining read and mostly feels like it could be an actual episode.

This novel was great! Like the past two, the characters were spot on and the humor was perfect. I really loved the zombie walk. I thoroughly enjoyed the different cons, the team having to spin and pivot due to twists and turns, and everything going wrong or being finished but then another bad thing took place and they decided to continue or, it could be argued, start a brand new con to deal with the new things going wrong.
I really enjoyed the story.

This one was harder to get through then the rest. I had trouble staying with it. As strange as it sounds there were parts of it that were just too descriptive.

If the TV show were still in production, this could easily be made into an episode. Maybe even a two-parter. It is that complex and that good.
