Seven years in the making, Peter Kay's hit stand up show, The Tour That Doesn't Tour Tour , has become Britain's biggest comedy tour in history. Now, here is the chance to experience the magic and brilliance of Peter's show, but with a difference; The Book That's More Than Just a Book Book invites you into a colorful world full of memorable characters and hilarious situations. Here you will encounter some familiar faces along with some downright unexpected ones. And if that wasn't enough, the full technicolor explosion of exclusive photographs and illustrations bring a whole new vivid dimension to Peter's top class comedy. From Uncle Nobhead's rocket and shatterproof rulers to Freddie Mercury and the hidden danger of sun loungers, The Book That's More Than Just a Book Book has something for everyone. Packed with comic riches, this is Peter Kay doing what he does better than anyone, and making you laugh till it hurts.
This is different to "The Sound of Laughter" and "Saturday Night Peter" in that it's an autobiography at all, it doesn't pick up from where SNP left off. Essentially this is THE script to "The Tour that doesn't tour Tour" entire performance.
Not that is isn't funny, because it is, although if you'd only just seen the live performance / DVD / Blu-ray a few weeks prior to reading this (as I did), you'd be a a little gutted.
It's still a funny book, well put together but doesn't take long to read. You'll get about an hour and half out of this, so you might feel a bit cheated.
This is basically a retelling of the standup script for Peter Kay’s tour with the same name. Very funny but if you’re a fan of Peter Kay you will have heard it all before. It doesn’t hurt to be reminded though.
Worth a read if you’re a fan of Peter Kay’s stand up! There were definitely a few laugh out loud moments, especially if you read it with Peter Kay’s voice in mind.
Well it took me a while to finish this funny book and yes it was funny, if you like nostalgic, observational, mildly naughty humour you’ll enjoy this book :)
I really wanted to enjoy this book, laugh out loud at the jokes (as I did with "The Sound Of Laughter" and "Saturday Night Peter") and slap 5 stars on it. But to be honest this book really didn't compare to his previous autobiographies. In fairness though this book isn't really an autobigraphy but more a collection of Peter Kay's material from pre "That Peter Kay Thing" to present. Even the Elmlea joke from before Peter found fame got a mention. I love Peter's observations and this collection of anecdotes from everyday scenarios is very funny. It's just that the jokes get less funny after you've heard the same person tell them a hundred times. I'm a little sick of hearing about Peter's Nan water skiing on the Wii after he's recently used the same material on tour and on the Royal Variety Performance. Peter Kay is still (in my opinion) the best comedian on the circuit. But he really does need to get some new material and stop relying on the tried, tested and to be frank dated material that he has been using for the past 6+ years. There was some small snippets of new material in this book, like the observation that when you park a car in a tight spot and then realise that someone is sat in the car next to you you make a big show of getting out slowly and awkwardly as not to bash your door into their car yet if their car was empty you'd just slam your door into the side of it (we all do it, don't we?). But these little nuggets of refreshing material were sparse and hidden amoungst jokes about Uncle Knobhead, Sky+, Garlic Bread and Cheesecake. And like I said we've heard all this from Kay many times before. The book was filled with some rather ammusing (photoshopped) photos and doodles. But I fear that whilst being rather funny these were just added as an after thought to bulk the book out. Which was proved by the fact that I read this book in less than a day, which I was really disapointed about as I'd recieved this book as a Christmas present and wanted to immerse myself in it for much longer than that. But on the plus side that does mean that this book will prove as a nice quick and enjoyable read in future when I've got nothing else on the go. Don't get me wrong I did really enjoy this book, but it just wasn't that insightful as it's all recycled stuff and whilst I'd never criticise someone for trying to make money from their talent I did get the feel that this book was published just for the sake of publishing it in order for Peter Kay to line his pockets a little more with the minimal of effort.
Peter Kay's The Sound of Laughter is one of my favourite celebrity autobiographies of all time. In fact I think it was one of the very first things I bought on eBay when I was 17. I borrowed this book from the library so I think Peter would agree that I am not his employer and can shove my job up my **** (book joke). I have bought his DVDs though so if Peter reads this I am not a total cheapskate!
I was a bit disappointed with this book though as not much of it is new material but jokes aren't just funny the first time you hear them so the book did give me a good laugh whilst reading it. It is also accompanied by some fantastic pictures which whilst good to look at do take up quite a lot of the book and there isn't that much writing so you do find yourself reading the book at a rapid pace.
Overall the book was an enjoyable read and a good accompaniment to the DVD however not much new material may annoy fans looking for something fresh and new. And as always with humour I find it better spoken aloud rather than written down and so whilst you can imagine Peter reading this book to you as it is written as he would say it, it loses some of its humour by being in written format. Still a great book for any Peter Kay fan though.
