Hey guys its Jessica. Sorry I’ve been MIA for so long. I apologize for the long overdue wait for Janet’s next book. You’ve all been very patient and loyal fans that she loves. She has been working on this book over the last year and a half while dealing with her battle with cancer. It saddens me to say that she peacefully lost this battle this past weekend while her family was by her side. I apologize if this feels sudden, she was a very private person even to her family. And she truly thought of all of you as her family. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.

Janet Chapman is the author of twenty-two contemporary and magical romance novels, all of which are set in her beautiful state of Maine. She lives in a cozy log home on a beautiful lake with her husband, surrounded by an eclectic assortment of wildlife that she finds both entertaining and inspiring. Probably best known for her Highlander Series (a saga of twelfth century warriors rebuilding their clans in modern-day Maine that now spans three generations), Janet also has two spin-off magical series (Midnight Bay & Spellbound Falls) and several contemporary family series set on the coast and in the mountains. With over three million books printed in six languages, her stories regularly appear on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller’s lists.

When she’s not writing (well, when she should to be writing but isn’t), Janet and her husband are traveling the state in their camper throughout all four seasons; hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and generally rubbing elbows with Mother Nature while always keeping an eye out for colorful new characters—human and beast—to put in her stories.

While I didn’t enjoy this one quite as much as the others in the series, it was an entertaining read nonetheless. It was nice to learn a bit more about Titus and his wife but what I love about this series is the magic of new love and new couples forming and this wasn’t quite that. I did think it was quite hilarious when we found out Rana’s reason for running away and what was actually going on, it definitely made me chuckle.

This was another fun trip to Spellbound Falls. I have loved Titus and Rana since their first appearance. Titus is the usual alpha male in god form, always certain that he is doing the right thing and determined that things go his way. Rana is his mortal wife of forty years, strong in her own right and very good at guiding Titus in the direction she feels is right for the situation. But now there's trouble in paradise as she has moved out of their home into one of her own, claiming she needs "a breath of fresh air".

Rana fell in love with Titus and married him when she was fifteen. She went from being protected and cared for by her father to being protected and cared for by Titus. She has decided that she needs some time on her own to see what she can do and experience without his help. She doesn't go far, just to a small cottage on the shore of the Bottomless Sea. She wants to stay close to her family and friends. Rana has come to love the community of Spellbound Falls and has gotten involved in several local projects. I loved seeing her hanging out with the ladies, being just another one of the group. In her current status with Titus she has let him know that she still loves him but that she feels he needs to start paying more attention to the little things in life not just mankind's big picture. Until he does that she's going to concentrate on her own wishes. I really loved seeing the two of them together. She obviously knows Titus very well and does a fantastic job of making him toe the line where her wishes are concerned. When he ignores her requests she shuts him down, leaving him wondering how he's going to get her to come home. There are several great scenes with her learning how to do things an ordinary woman of the time would do. Her driving lesson with Peg was fun, but also gave a glimpse of some trouble that is brewing in Spellbound Falls. I also loved the scene where she lends a hand as a waitress, taking orders and dealing with an obnoxious customer. Throughout the book her interactions with Titus show that her love for him is just as strong as it ever was but that she needs more from him than she has been getting lately. When Titus starts giving her the type of attention she has been craving from him she starts to have hope that things will be okay. When their boat race encounters supernatural problems the secret she's been keeping from him comes out and she has to deal with the consequences. I loved their trip through the woods and the rekindling of their closeness.

Titus is a man who is used to things going his way. He is stunned when Rana moves out and can't figure out why she has done it. He is determined to win her back and the story is full of his attempts to do so. He knows her very well after forty years together and makes some pretty bold attempts to show his feelings. When those attempts backfire on him he thinks back to when he was first courting her and changes the way he's doing things.. I loved that peek into their past and how it showed so much about who they are. There are also memories of their early marriage and the way that they supported each other as Titus cemented his position as a god and created the world of Atlantis. I really loved the way it showed how much Titus appreciated Rana and the perspective that she brought to their lives. Although he didn't understand why Rana had left I loved the way that he supported her in her desire to try new things and the ways he tried to make things easier for her. I loved her trip up the mountain in her new car and the reason for it (I sense this will be important in a future book) and the way that he helped her get back down the mountain without making a big deal about it. I loved the way he teased her into the boat race and his tactics during the race were fun to see. When the race came to an abrupt end I loved his protectiveness and the way he cared for her. I was really amused by the way he decided to imitate the highlanders he so often grumbles about as they walk their way back to civilization. It is during that trip that he opens up to Rana about the secret he has been keeping from her and his plans for their future. His love and regard for her is shown by this passage:
"I'm explaining that the transfer began that day. It won't be complete until I decide it is."
"And...and you've decided?"
"Almost."
She glared up at him. "What do you mean almost?"
"I'm waiting to hear the opinion of my most valued adviser and confident."
She went back to scowling at the ground. "Who?" she whispered.
He pulled her to a stop and gathered her in his arms again. "That would be my stubborn, opinionated, irreverent, lusty, terrible wife."

Also part of the book is the presence of a group of people who are attempting to bring a new god into existence. The magical people of Spellbound Falls are waiting to see if the new entity will be one of good or evil. I see this being a large part of a future book. There are also some new arrivals to the area - a doctor to work in the new women's clinic, a twelfth century highlander who will be the new police chief (that should be a trip!) and a female escapee from those people trying to raise a new god. There's a funny scene where Carolina goes into labor and the men deal with the idea of being in the labor room. I also love the concurrent scene where Titus lets Mac and the others in on his plans and their reaction to it. I'm really looking forward to the next book.

I’ve been a big fan of Janet Chapman from the very beginning of her career. She’s just one of those authors that I find easy to read, I like her voice and adore how she manages to combine magical, historical and contemporary settings. There is just so much romance and charm in every one of her stories. So it pains me to say this but, I think this was my least favorite of her books to date. Not that there was anything to object to with the writing, I was just bored. I struggled to finish, and that is something I don’t think I’ve ever done with a Janet Chapman romance before.

For the Love of Magic is the story of Rana and Titus. An older, established couple who are the parents of Maximilian and Carolina. Since the beginning of this series we’ve seen them interact with every character, Titus as an integral part of several of the plot lines. He’s always seemed larger than life, a man with godlike powers who just came into being millennia ago, creating both Atlantis and the Trees of Life. I’ve actually been looking forward to this book, because to me sometimes the love stories of established couples working out their problems and getting stronger are just so much richer…. This story almost seemed like filler. An afterthought. Maybe a bridge between this series and the next.

Their book starts off with Rana leaving her husband and moving into a rental to live on her own. No one, not even Titus, knows why she left, but she seems determined to live like a normal everyday woman in the wilds of Maine. In addition to her house, she also buys a rusted out truck and learns to drive, helps out waitressing in the local diner and has a young metal smith teaching her to build pretty statues. After forty years of marriage he knows his wife in and out, but lack of communication and fear have driven his wife away and Titus must woo her all over again, resorting to his old tricks to get back into her good graces. It’s not until the end of the book and after giving her husband a merry chase that we learn why she has moved out and seems to be changing her life.

I think what bothered me is that both Rana and Titus seemed to lose their spark, and Titus definitely became just an ordinary man. I think Ms. Chapman meant to bring them down to earth and give readers a sense of them as regular people, but for some reason I liked the bigger than life characterizations better. There are flashbacks to their original courtship that were lovely, and really the best part of the book. Those scenes were almost more interesting than the present day ones to me. All my favorite Spellbound Falls residents make appearances, the continuation of their stories playing out while Rana and Titus rediscover the reasons they love each other. There were some rather sweet moments at the end that helped recapture my interest and I did like their HEA, but if I was guiding a reader toward one of this author’s books and giving recommendations Titus and Rana’s story wouldn’t be the one I would have them start out with.

While this wasn’t my favorite Janet Chapman novel, I continue to be a fan and she remains an auto buy author for me. Final Grade- C

Favorite Quote:

“I know it wasn’t your intention,” he said, smoothing a hand over her hair, “but these last couple of weeks without you gave me a frightening glimpse of my future and exposed my cowardice.”

H ducked his head to look into her eyes. “I’m afraid, wife, of seeing sunsets you won’t be seeing, of lying in bed listening to rain you won’t be hearing, and of breathing air you won’t be breathing. It will not be life without you–it will be madness. Please, little one,” he whispered against her cheek, “allow me to join you in life ever after.”

a strange version of a romance to be sure with both H/H being married already-to each other! but seeing them rediscover their playfulness and reaffirm their love was fun. It seems like a bit of a new beginning for the Oceanus family and the new characters we got to meet give wide possibilities for new novels in the series. Can't wait to find out what's next.

For the Love of Magic is the fifth in Chapman's most recent series, and is tied with Mac's story. For the love of magic, is about Mac and Carolina's parents, Titus and Rana. When I first started reading this series, I fell in love with this family from the beginning, especially Titus and Rana. Such a unique couple. Having been married for forty years, their marriage has had their ups and downs, but their love has never faltered. Until one day Rana tells Titus she needs some space and buys herself a shack of a cabin. Titus has no idea what to think of his wife, in his mind he thought they were doing great, and with all of his power and ability never saw this coming. So not having a clue as to what is wrong, is determined to make things right, so he begins to court her. Rana has her own personal reasons for leaving Titus but her love for him has never faltered. Admidst the turmoil of their courting a new danger of demons that are after Titus may threaten everything they have built.

I found this story to be charming and witty and wickedly fun. Not too much sensuality in this story, but I found that to be a plus in this story. I felt like it was a sweet and story about a couple that have been married and in love for quite some time, and the reader gets a chance to see more of this couple than you have in the previous books. I really enjoyed getting to see how these two met, and seeing a bit of their past. It was also fun to see some Mackeages and of course Mac, Caroline (Jane), and Nicholas. I found that I was a bit confused on a couple of things, but after reading it all I think it was meant to be that way, keep you on your toes. Definitely has the same zest and passion and witty repatoire that you come to love with this author. In love with every moment, and could hardly put it down.

Another great Spellbound Falls adventure focused on Rana and Titus. After 40 years of marriage, Rana leaves the God when she fears she is pregnant and he will go all over protective and whisk her back to Atlantis out of fear of losing her. This is what happens when a thousand year plus deity falls for a mortal woman. One of my HEA "go to" series, love the world building, the characters and underlying theme woven into all these books. The warriors are honorable, strong and protective to a fault. The woman are smart, capable and independent, the backbone of their communities, but fall hard for these sexy guys. JC please keep these wonderful books coming!

Even after forty years of marriage, Titus Oceanus finds himself trying to win back his heart and wife, Rana.

Rana Oceanus finds that she is still unsure of where she stands in the scheme of things. A mere mortal, married to an immortal who has fought to keep mankind safe, she finds that she needs to take a brak to evaluate where she is in life, and where to move on.

Titus and Rana's story is very neat. Even a long standing love, can need to be vitalized and encouraged to keep going.

Nice addition to the series..

This is a nice addition to the series that tell the story of Titus and Rana. There are three different series that make up the whole. Starting with the Pine Creek novels about time traveling highlanders. Then followed by Moonlight Bay where a warrior guides misplaced souls back to their humanity ,. One of TY here souls is a 9th century Irish warrior who was cursed to become a dragon. And finally a soldier home from Afghanistan meets a 12th century girl who roamed the centuries as a red tailed hawk. She also happens to be the lost sister to the soul Warrior . After is turned back into a woman she is forced to confront modern society and becomes a tenant of our soldier. That brings us to Spellbound Falls.

Great book. There is lots of action and a bit of magic in the air, so to speak. This is about Rana Oceanus and her husband Titus. After 40 years of marriage, Rana has left Titus and is keeping a big secret from him. He cannot understand why she left and she certainly isn't telling him why. They do have to deal with a little side plot of demons, but it does have some funny moments, too. Highly recommend.

This series is charming, however, the first half of this book had so many characters from the previous books thrown in that it got confusing. When the story narrowed down to just Rana & Titus and a few others, it got back to being charming. What could be greater than a guy still being hot for his wife after 40 years of marriage?

This is a continuing story about the magic and how to learn to live with this wonderful family. Rena Oceanus felt she needed to step away from her husband Titus for a break but he was confused as to why. The book started a little slow but found its center and ended up really good and warm. Great book.

A disappointing book in which very little happens. Having read other instalments in the series, I had hoped for more.

Whilst this novel had potential, said potential was not realised and the final result was quite boring. Chapman missed a number of opportunities to explore contemporary issues.

My advice? Unless you are a huge Chapman fan, give this one a miss

Rana Oceanus has left her husband and bought a run down house by the sea to find answers to some questions and hide a secret she's afraid to share. She determines to learn metal-crafting and make her own decisions away from an overprotective husband. It doesn't help that he is a God and can control all kinds of magic. Titus doesn't understand what is wrong and tries to get her back. This was a fun book with lots of characters from other books in the series popping in and out.

As a book to continue the series, it is decent as we get to continue the timeline of all the couples. However, it wasn’t great as a love story. Rana spent a good portion of the book acting like a child when she is apparently 55 years old. Titus was keeping secrets too, but none of it was that interesting.

Another Spellbound Falls delight

Loved it. This is my second time through this series and I still love it. Gorgeous setting. Fun cast of characters. Feisty women not afraid to stand up to their loving, but a bit over protective, men. Best read in order, this is a delight.

Title: For the Love of Magic

Series: Spellbound Falls bk 5

Author: Janet Chapman

Genre: Paranormal

After forty years of marriage, Rana Oceanus has done the unthinkable and run away from her mighty, magical husband. Not that she ran very far, having purchased a house in Spellbound Falls right on the shore of the Bottomless Sea, where she intends to prepare for the scariest battle of her life. The only flaw in her plan, however, is that she is still very much in love with Titus…

Shocked and deeply shaken that his wife really has left him—though he still can’t fathom why—Titus sets out to win her back. But when grand gestures of his esteem don’t seem to further his cause, he conjures up some of his original courtship magic to capture the heart of the beautiful young maiden all over again.

Then his plan takes a dangerous turn when Titus discovers that dealing with demons is far less threatening than the little secret his very mortal wife has been keeping from him.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, as I'm typically not a fan of older couples, especially couples who have been married for a long time unless its to see their original love story. But I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised when I couldn't put the book down.

When the book opens up its been four months since Rana left Titus and he's still trying to figure out why. As far as he knew they were happy. After having been married for forty years he thought he knew his wife. He's done everything she's asked but all he wants is his wife back. When an opportunity presents itself where he can have her all to himself, and where she can't disappear he takes it. Determined to discover what made her leave and what it will take to bring her back.

Rana is terrified. Not because she's afraid of her husband. No it's because if what she suspects is true about what is going on with her body he will be a basket case. She has very good intentions for why she left Titus. It's to protect him. What she never counted on was missing him so much. After all they haven't slept apart in forty years. When she's forced to spend time with him, she realizes it wasn't fair to either of them to keep the secret she's been keeping from him, as it affects him as well.

I loved this story. It's very clear from the beginning that Rana and Titus love each other and everything they do they do for the other person. Even when they are misguided in what they think they other one needs. It was great to see a couple who even after so many years together can still make mistakes, fight, and make-up and get on with being married. Oh and the fact that they still wanted to have rip roaring sex with each other.

There is a small side story about a new God that helps to fuel what eventually happens with Rana and Titus. We also get to check in on the other characters from the series and see what is happening with them.

I'm really glad I picked up this book and gave it a chance.

(Jul) When I read the previous book in this series, I mused about how one goes about quitting an author. Well, after this, I think I finally got my answer - you just give up. You realize what you always enjoyed about a series just isn't there anymore. While I never loved all the books JC wrote, I enjoyed following the displaced-in-time Highlanders who now live and work and love in Maine. However, the series has gotten more and more convoluted, with more and more characters - many of whom pop up in book after book. I don't remember who most of them are at this point, and the stories seem to just drag a bit more with each book. This series is considered 3 separate series, but to me they are all part of one whole. I checked this book out of the library almost an entire year ago,and it just sat and sat (thank you library for continuous renewals!) - I just couldn't get excited about reading this. But, as always, I worried if I skipped it maybe I'd be missing something, missing some of the magic that made the first several so good. I should have trusted my instincts, because once I finally got into it, it was basically a book with no story and no point and didn't need to be written.

Rena (who also has another name - can't remember what it is, not sure they ever explained why she has two names) has left her home in Atlantis and her husband of 40 years, with no explanation, and come to live in Maine near her children, grandchildren and many of her friends. Titus comes after her and settles in, waiting for his wife to explain what is going on. What he does not know is Rena is pregnant (at 55) and freaked out that Titus will become overbearing and difficult, so she just needed some time away. I cry bullshit. After 40 mostly wonderful years, she can't either say "I need some time or some space" or just talk to him? No, instead she runs away and decides she is going to live in a gross old house and learn to make metal sculptures. Okay......! A bunch of characters interact with them, there is a cult in town trying to raise a new God, a bunch of other unrelated and mostly unimportant stuff happens, Rena tells Titus the truth, and then . It was a completely pointless book, I hated Rena (but I did totally enjoy Titus, as usual), and I can honestly say I think I am done. The next book, which is already out, jumps from this book of 289 pgs to over 400 pages - and with it's mediocre reviews, I just don't care to continue. Good bye and good luck to the folks of Spellbound Falls - I wish I could say I'll miss you, but I don't think I will.

The ever delightful Janet Chapman takes us back to Spellbound Falls! Honestly, I love this series where magic abounds and yet the true magic is always about the magic of the heart. Sometimes sweet, sometimes silly but always an enjoyable read.

For the Love of Magic tells the story or Rana and Titus.. Not their original story, although we do get to see glimpses of that. But rather the story of two people who have loved dearly for decades and yet still manage to mess things up.

Confusion, lack of communication and honestly true love separates the two when Rana moves out. She buys a lovely beach side cabin (read shack) on Max and Olivia's land (Max being her son, Olivia her daughter in law) and begins an interesting process of finding herself and protecting Titus. All the while driving poor Titus up a wall. No one moves out on a man and then calls him My Love..

Titus Oceanus, creator and protector of the Trees of Knowledge, the god of Atlantis, father of two, Grandfather of three (and one on the way) but most importantly husband of Rana.. A god bent on serving mankind, not destroying it or playing with it. He even fought the other gods in order to do so. And yet here is alone.. his adored wife has left him and the poor man hasn't got a clue as to why.

This was a fun book.. watching everyone give Titus advice and offering Rana support was just well fun. You have to feel for a guy who has no clue as to why his wife left and has the patience (sort of) to listen to all the well meaning advice, without blowing anyone up.

The negatives on this book was well it was more of a reunion book. We see all these lovely favorite characters and what they are doing. And those we don't see, we hear about.. Titus and Rana's story is fun and cute and wonderful in the fact that love lasts forever.. but the entire plot was a bit contrived. I honestly felt like it was tossed in there in order to introduce us to the next set of characters.. and believe me I think there is some interesting stuff going to happen soon.

Two new delectable heroes were introduced.. and one lovely female. Not sure who the next book is going to be about but I know I will be waiting to find out.

While this was not my favorite book of Ms Chapman's I still enjoyed it for what it was.. a wonderful, fun book!

Shauni

I am giving this book only Three Stars because I felt it was too much filler and not enough story..

For the Love of Magic, Spellbound Falls #5, by Janet Chapman
Grade: C

“Wow. When you take off your tiara, you don’t mess around, do you?”

Rena Oceanus has a secret and under no circumstances can she let her husband find out which is why she left Atlantis and is in Spellbound Falls alone. After forty years of marriage Rena needs space and getting it from her immortal husband Titus is not always easy and she knows if he is around he will discover her secret since he knows her so well. The more time she spends in Spellbound Falls the more she discovers how much she loves the little Maine town and people who live there and finds she doesn’t want to leave this new modern world.

Titus Oceanus is shocked when his wife declares she needs space and is leaving him for a while. Not one to sit back and let things fall, Titus follows his wife to Spellbound Falls determined to win her back. Titus knows his wife is hiding something and he too has some secrets he’s been keeping from her. Besides his wife leaving Titus is also dealing with a new god, a crazy cult and trying to keep the peace in Spellbound Falls all of which lead to him to make some big decisions in his life.

I am a big fan of the Spellbound Falls series and I was excited to get Rena and Titus’s story but for some reason this book just didn’t do it for me. I felt that it could have been a novella instead of a full novel and at times it seemed anticlimactic. For me For the Love of Magic didn’t do much but set up the next set of books in the series and again would have been better if it was shorter and not set as a full book in the series.

I honestly felt that Rena and Titus separating was a little boring as these two weren't having major problems and there was never a doubt in my mind that things would just blow over. I wanted to spend more time focusing on the cult, the new god and Niall (whose book I hope is next) instead of “marriage problems”between these two. I also wanted to see Rena do more of her metal work and interactions with Zack and grow into more of a modern woman.

All in all I was very disappointed in this book and I was hoping for much, much more. I still I have high hopes for this series and I’m very excited to get Niall’s book, which I am praying is next. This book was a great concept but it just didn’t work out.
