2.5 stars It all started with a runaway working woman, feathers and a bunch of orphans. We start out following a young salon woman (19) forced to service men. She is waiting for a moment to run and when the moment comes, she runs. She runs and finds a group of unwanted orphans which she drags along with her. She was an orphan and can't leave them to the horrible fate awaiting them. She dresses herself as a child, and claims to be 13. She tells a wounded Texas Ranger they need help. Being a Ranger, he can't leave them, he helps get them to a town, where he plans to unload them with some nice people.
Things happen, he cares too much to just drop them anywhere. His injuries, her lies, the children all nibble at the edges of his stand alone ways. I wanted to like this, I tried hard. It had moments, some very funny scenes. it also had some cheesy lines, references to modern inventions that were ridiculous, a totally unbelievable story, undeveloped characters and a romance that was so predictable I was sorry I finished the book. I gave it 2.5 stars for the funny moments. I will not read this author's work again
Great story. You laugh. Sad for the girl.Happy for the children. One of the best books l have ever read .Travis is a Texas Ranger who meets up with Violet and children. Violet running from her past.I recommend this book.Georgina you are a great writer
Texas Ranger, Travis Prescott is in Kansas hunting down an outlaw to drag back to Texas for justice. Instead, the outlaw ends of dead by Travis's quick shooting arm and Travis ends up with a shattered bullet in his shooting wrist, potentially ending his career as a Ranger. After Travis sees the town doctor who gives him the bad news, he goes, buys himself a bottle of whiskey and continues to drink himself into a mindless stupor that changes his life forever. When he awakens from his drinking binge, he finds himself in the presence of sad looking creatures who are bound to cause him trouble.
Violet LaFarge is a saloon girl intent on escaping life in the saloon owned by Duke, who keeps her destitute and busy seeing to the needs of the saloon. Violet sees her chance at escape one night, but as she is about to take her leave, she stumbles across four orphans in need and pretty immediately take these four on as her responsibility. On a moment's notice, the almost 20 year old saloon girl transforms herself to a 13 year old innocent by swapping clothing with a passerby and putting her long brown hair into pigtails.
Together, the orphans seek out someone to help them and upon coincidence find a quite inebriated Travis, passed out in the street. When he awakens, he finds himself at the mercy of the five orphans who have basically ambushed him into eating his food and stealing his dog, who immediately latches itself onto the smallest of the orphans, Boo Hoo, who constantly cries, until she meets the pooch. The ragtag crew of misfit orphans guilts Travis into taking them along on his journey and they end up in Pleasant Valley, Texas and quickly become a family of sorts.
Only problem is, Violet is falling in love with Travis, who thinks she's an innocent 13 year old, and now that she's told the lie, she's hard pressed to come clean. even though every single female in Pleasant Valley want to put their hooks into Travis. You see, Travis has a big issue with lying females since his fiancee, Emily left him for none other than Violet's deviant boss, Duke. How can Violet fess up when it will ruin her chances with Travis anyway and take her new family away from her?
This dilemma follows Violet through weeks of playing the child, even though she is also taking charge of the household and the children. Travis is not immune to Violet, he is attracted to her as well, but every single time he realizes she's only 13, he practically castigates himself. When one wealthy widow sets her cap on Travis she goes after him with a vengeance, bringing out the worst in Violet, whose jealousy is slowly building up and is bound to explode soon.
Travis ~ The Texan~ by Georgina Gentry, is the first of her books I have read. I enjoyed the storyline immensely and so enjoyed the interaction between the characters, as the uniting of all these different beings was such a perfect ensemble. Travis is the defeated Texas Ranger who so desperately wants his life as Ranger back, but can no longer see his life without the orphans. Violet knew no other life than the one she had in the saloon. The degradation of being forced to become a whore made her more determined to start new and never have anyone know about the tainted life she led. These are the makings of a great story, and one I definitely recommend.
Travis Prescott is a Texas Ranger who always gets his man, even when it costs him the use of his gun hand. Adrift in a frontier town with no one but his horse and his dog for company, Travis considers settling down to ranch. As he gears up to make a land run, he finds himself inundated by a ragtag group of cast off orphans begging for a handout.
Violet LeFarge is a saloon girl wishing for something more. When she stumbles upon a group of children waiting for the orphan train, she cannot help but take them in. Disguising herself as the eldest of the youngsters, she finds a likely hero in Travis. If only she can convince him to take them along for the ride.
Travis and his ready-made family settle into a sleepy town right across the Texas border. As if trying to raise five kids isn’t trying enough, Travis also has to dodge the matchmaking attempts of half the town. It is Violet who makes a warm and loving home for them all, and Travis finds himself drawn to her. The more they get to know each other, the more Travis realizes she is not the child he thought she was.
Though the idea of a hero like Travis taking in a group of orphans is intriguing, it is tempered by the fact that Violet’s relationship with him begins with her playing the role of his adopted child. At times the both of them seem so obtuse it is a little frustrating. And in the end, it is the children who are the real heroes.
“Travis” by Georgian Gentry is one of a series of books called “The Texans”. It is the story of a Texas Ranger who is injured in a gunfight and is not able to shoot with precision any more. Violet is a dance hall girl who is trying to get out of this life, find a husband and have a family. A group of four orphans from an orphan train is stranded in their town and look to Violet to help them. She decides to pretend to be much younger and joins the orphans to find a new home. They happen upon Travis and sort of attach themselves to him. After a time, Travis looks upon these five as his kids. Of course, Violet takes on the role of “mother” to the lot of them. Travis is drawn to her, but thinks that she is only thirteen and unavailable to him. The story revolves around this rag-tag bunch finding themselves as a family and living happily. Of course, there is the brothel owner who is trying to find Violet because she ran away from him. The ending is both a surprise and satisfying. You will enjoy this book.

When I found out that she had started a sequel to Colt I was extremely excited to find out what happened to Travis after he grew up.
While this book still contains elements similar to the last one I found it lacking something but I really couldn't place my finger on what. It may have been that I felt Travis was extremely hard on himself or it may have just been how everything was set up and then resolved. While I think it's a good book and while I still wouldn't mind checking out the other books in her series this one just wasn't quite to my 'five star worthy' liking.
I read this book a few months back. I really enjoyed all of Georgina Gentry's books. They keep you right there and it's all about love of the family and trials of course. Awesome books. Great author.Glad we have them all in our Library as well as mine at home.
