Bachelorette parties, dazzling big city lights, and… a hit man? Winifred Page-Lopez might not relish the idea of partying in the city, but for Katie Pizzolato’s bachelorette night, Fred has put her heart into planning the perfect evening and will brave it all—including the pink stretch limo! She even shakes off the wistfulness of missing Watson trotting beside her, knowing her grumpy corgi well enough to not dare take him away from his fireplace naps for city chaos. Pulling off a night on the town for Katie shouldn’t be too difficult, but with multiple bachelorette parties converging, tensions flare. And when Fred walks in on murder and literally chases down a killer, the trail of plots and betrayals leads back up the mountain to Estes Park. The Cozy Corgi Bookshop & Bakery—and Katie’s heavenly dirty chais and baking—are exactly what Fred needs to step out of the sanctuary of the bookshop’s mystery room with Watson by her side, determined to solve this mystery and ensure smooth sailing for Katie’s final stretch to the altar. With too many suspects and a range of motives, this murder might lead Fred in circles. Fortunately, Watson is on the case with her, ready to ensure his mama’s safety as they catch a killer. (This culinary cozy mystery includes a recipe for bachelorette party-worthy No Bake Mixed Berry Cheesecake Bars.)

I love this series. I've been reading it since it first appeared and though I'm sure I've missed the occasional installment, I'm always delighted to return to Estes Park for a visit with Fred/Winifred and Watson. I enjoyed that we get lots of grumpy corgi Watson this go-round. The regulars are there, too, of course, and Katie's upcoming wedding is the pseudo-focus of the book although, let's face it, there's always a murder mystery to solve that takes center stage. The last thing either Katie or Fred expected, however, was a murder during their outing to Denver for a bachelorette party. Fred, who seems to have the luck of stumbling over bodies frequently, walks in just in time to see a possible suspect standing over the murdered body. Seems simple, right? Nope. And finding out the details and whodunit is half the fun. The other half is getting to watch the beyond grumpy Watson pouting and shunning Fred, his unforgiving personality leading Fred to think he may never come out of his hidey hole in time to go home. And, that's just the tip of the iceberg.
When I began to think of why this series has appealed to me so much, the first reason is, of course, rather obvious. I, too, own a corgi mix and although she's not even remotely as grumpy as Watson, like him she has a strong personality and when she's displeased with me, I know it. Second, the humans, of course, are well-fleshed out and quite individual, from the town gossips to the usually bubbly Katie and usually grumpy police chief, Susan. Let's just say, Susan isn't at all pleased when Fred somehow manages to get involved in a murder out of town that finds its way back to Susan's attention. I'll leave it for readers to discover the role of Lassie here but, well, Susan is not pleased with Lassie. The friend-enemy status of Fred and Susan continues, with Susan alternately willing to listen to Fred's takes on the investigation and Susan's exasperation with Fred's meddling flowing over. It makes for some fun, if intense scenes, though I note that Fred has gotten better at refraining from the snappy retorts bound to anger Susan even more. That said, I like Susan and am pretty sure you will, too, as you'll like all the regulars. So, it's a toss up between my corgi fixation and the intriguing, well-rounded characters that somehow feel like old friends that kept me coming back.
As for the murder, well, although few seem to mourn the victim's passing, there are some surprising moments there as well. One of the amusing aspects of this book is that Fred is somehow surprised to discover that the suspects she visits to question have been expecting her. Talk about your reputation being widely known. That doesn't stop her, of course, although Watson's shunning of her at the moment means he doesn't have her back as usual. Will he decide to forgive Fred her transgressions in time to be helpful? Seriously, I know I keep coming back to the grumpy Watson but it was such fun to "see". That said, will Fred survive Susan's wrath? Lassie? What does a pink Cadillac have to do with anything? How many business places will Fred be unwelcome at before this is all over? Which of those involved in the victim's wedding plans killed her or, wait, who was that red-head? And, oh, just read the book. It's a fun read and, hey, there's always a recipe or two to make your mouth water.
"Baffling Bachelorettes" is Book 31 of the Cozy Corgi Mysteries series, beautifully written by Mildred Abbott. While this series includes murdered characters, which are not funny elements to a great mystery, there are plenty of funny scenes in each of the books in this series. I will point out a few of the funny scenes, and then I will do a review of the book's entire premise. One of the funny scenes is where Anna Hanson, the owner of the expensive furniture store across the street from the Cozy Corgi Bookshop, invites Winifred "Fred" and Leo to have a home-cooked meal at the shop. This is such a hilarious scene where Anna has a Chinese food buffet and a beautiful Cherry Cheesecake desert. Let's just say "There's nothing like a home cooked meal and desert that's not actually cooked by the hostess." Another funny scene is when Winifred is having an animated conniption fit in front of Katie and in the middle of the street. When you get to this scene, which is pretty early on in the book, you will know what I'm talking about. The third funny episodes involve the Cozy Corgi mascot, the grumpy Watson, in which one of the scenes, which lasts at least chapters, has Watson very much upset with Fred, totally ignoring her, and not even being his normally happy self at the mention of treats.
This volume focuses on Katie Pizzolato's bachelorette party that is held in Denver, a pink limousine, bar-hopping, and then murder at a karaoke/piano bar. The plot includes one bride-to-be from Estes Park morning in on Katie's bachelorette party, the other bride-to-be's 6 bridesmaids joining Katie's party of bridesmaids, plus Paulie, Campbell, Ben, and Nick. Susan did not make an appearance, because there was no way she would join in on that kind of a party. However, after a bride-to-be is murdered in Denver, and the hitman was run over by a car, and the Denver sheriff wound up in Estes Park, accusing the bride-to-be's fiancee of killing the bride-to-be, then Susan got involved. This sounds like a daytime soap opera, doesn't it? Well, this episode has Winifred and Katie and Watson going around town, trying to find the murderer, getting lots of clues but not many satisfying results, having to put up with an aggravating Denver policeman, and trying to solve a second murder in Estes Park. This is an excellent series and one of my top 5 favorites. I gave this book 5 stars and can hardly wait for Book 32.
I will never not be bothered by the author pretending to be a woman until they got asked to do a video interview. Women had to pretend to be men to get published due to inequality. A man pretending to be a woman to get accepted in the cozy genre is icky. Especially the fact that they were not up front about it from the start.
I enjoyed this book, as I have the past books. There were moments where Katie and Fred both were grating to my nerves. I hate weddings in books and real life because it makes everyone so ugly.
I selected the baddie early on, and I was correct. There was a lot of loss and sadness with this book. It feels like Abbott likes to cause a lot of damage with each mystery to so many characters involved. We will see how many are left standing when the series ends!
OMG another amazing mystery!❤️. This one definitely made you wonder who was doing all the murders! When you start off with two bachelorette parties meeting at the same place at the end and ending with a murder by a hit man that also got killed in the chase and the man whose finance was murdered in the end was the one behind it! Another woman in the same party her affair was found out and she was murdered! In the end the to be groom Fred ended up taking him down in the Cozy Corgi bookstore while Watson was protecting Fred he had his teeth in the man's ankle! Definitely need to read and also hear about Pat and the pink limousine!
Nice series, how much better can a book be when you have, books, baked goods, sweets, a pink limousine, murder mystery and a Corgi? Covers all the bases for me.
You should enjoy Fred and Watson’s adventures as much as I did. Their adventures highlighting finding dead bodies and who is suspected of killing. Another wonderful must read. Hard to put down till you have read the last paragraph.
Come along on Katie's Bachelorette party! This is another fun installment in the series! Please keep 'em comin'! Thanks for the fun. And now I want cupcakes.
Another great cozy corgi mystery. I don't think I could stick around an area with so many murders. I purchased this e-book from Amazon through the kindle store
Murders most awful. Baked goods to delight!’ Corgi being stubborn. Fred being resourceful. What more can you ask of Ms Abbott. When is the next one due?
