Acquainted With the Night #2
Hunting Daylight
Out of the shadows...
For more than a decade, Caro Barrett has had doubts about the death of her husband, who disappeared while looking for a tribe of day-walking vampires in an African rainforest. Now, their daughter is struggling through her teenage years without a father. Waiting in the wings is an ancient vampire ready to possess Caro's heart—and to protect them both from harm. And, with her husband declared legally dead, Caro feels it is finally time to move on...
A hemisphere away in a windowless compound, an Ottoman vampire lies dying from a rare blood disease, which has made him vulnerable to the faintest bit of light. Yet he is determined to vanquish its power over him—to feel the sun on his face one last time. And in Caro's darkest fears he will be lifted into the light of day...

The story begins with Jude and Caro, they are on the run because they fear for their daughter life and they are in desperate need of money! Jude is a vampire and the cost of blood is high,so he takes a job in Africa for 30 days by Al-Din Corporation! While in Africa something happens and Jude is declared missing!
For 10 years Caro doesn't know what happened to her husband, she is left alone with her daughter Vivi but luckily Vivi godfater Raphael is with them and helping along the way!
Raphael really cared for Caro and would do anything to protect her and Vivi!Relashionship between raphael and Caro was slow, sweet and romantic! I love him,he was so patient, sweet and caring,he loved her all this time but he waited hoping one day she will love him back!
The character development was astounding, and I really felt thoroughly connected to all of them!
My only dislike about the book was ending..At the end we found out that Jude is alive kept prisoner all this time dreaming about his family. But caro has moved on, grieved him and mourn him,but finally found luck, love and happinest! So were that this leave Raphael and Caro in their relationship??!!!

Happy Release Day for Hunting Daylight!!!
The lovely folks at Berkley/NAL (Imprint of Penguin Group) contacted me about doing a review of Hunting Daylight. I went into it a little leary only because it is the second book in a series and I hadn’t read book one. However, the publicist assured me that the books in this series do great as stand alone novels so I decided to give it a shot.
Right off the bat, I was intrigued. The book opens with a scientist headed to the uncharted Amazon rainforest in Gabon and two things quickly become obvious. First, he’s been brought to the jungle for a much different reason than he was told. Second, there’s a chance he wont walk back out.
Hunting Daylight is INTENSE from the very first page! I was immediately hooked and proceeded to burn through this book in no time. There are several story arcs running at once in this book and the author writes in such a fashions that you never lose track of what is going on and all of the story arcs are intertwined so each segment provides you with a little nugget that plays into the next. It makes for one big story that flows perfectly.
The only thing I didn’t like about Hunting Daylight was the last two pages. I become so invested in one story arc in particular and it did NOT end the way I wanted it to. *smiles* Totally not held against the author but I was a little heart broken.
The real thing that I felt hurt Hunting Daylight a bit was the first 50% of this book contains some of the worst sexual frustration I have ever encountered in a book. As someone who reads a LOT of urban fantasy/paranormal romance, I am used to sex scenes and almost sex scenes being sprinkled throughout the book. My problem with this book was the almost sex scenes went so far, and there are a few of them prior to these two characters finally throwing down, that it was kind of distracting. Like to the point of tab a was inserted into slot b and then………………it just……………..wasn’t. It was actually distracting. And then I was baffled over the fact that I was distracted by a fictional character’s inability to seal the deal. Then I was distracted all over again.
With that being said (and my reader’s angst over the ending not wrapping up the way I thought it was going to), Hunting Daylight is an EXCELLENT book. Genuinely. I loved it enough that I plan to go back and read Acquainted With the Dark #1 at some point.
I definitely recommend this book. Hunting Daylight easily rocks 4.5 stars!

Jude and Caro are in desperate need of money. The cost of blood does not come cheap. This is why Jude is going to take the job that the Al-Din Corporation has offered him. A thirty one day expedition in Africa. Something happens and Jude disappears. Jude has been gone so long that he is declared dead.
Caro and her daughter, Vivi try to get on with their lives. They are doing well until a vampire comes looking for them. Raphael, a vampire friend comes to Caro and Vivi’s aid. As time passes, Caro and Raphael start developing feelings for each other.
Meanwhile across the world, a vampire lies dying from a disease. One that makes the vampire susceptible to daylight.
I have not read the first book, Acquainted with the Night. Although, I have seen the book around. Having said this, I had no trouble reading this book. In fact, I would have to say I enjoyed the vampires in this book. The vampires felt real to me. Like the type that could actually exist and be living among us in the present day.
What I also liked about this book is that Cara was not an immortal but only a partial. This added a nice element to the book. Where not all of the characters were full-fledged vampires or vampires and humans.
As soon as Raphael came into the picture more, I could tell where it was going to lead between Caro and Raphael. I thought that they made a good couple. Raphael really cared for Caro and would do anything to protect her. The love scenes between them were not overly sexed up. This was nice.
My only two disappointments with this book were that I thought that it was a bit long. While this is a quick read, the action goes in waves. So this is why I felt that the book could have been shortened up and it still would have been good. My other issue I had with this book was the ending. I thought it was too much like a Disney ending. Although, I do plan to go back and read book one to get to better understand Caro and Jude’s relationship.

This is the sequel to Acquainted with the Night. Jude and Caro have a young daughter,Vivi, but are constantly on the run to protect their family from the believers in a prophecy involving their daughter. Now that Jude is a vampire, it creates additional challenges for their locations. He takes a job in Africa for a secret mission looking at an unusual species of bat, but all hell breaks loose at the camp, and he is missing, presumed dead. The story flashes forward in time to Vivi’s teenaged years and it becomes apparent that she has powers of her own. Their benefactor, an old and powerful vampire, Raphael works to help protect them and find a teacher for Vivi. When their location is discovered, they must fight to find an escape as an ancient and dying vampire seeks to find a way to be in the light and Vivi must find a way to use her new skills in order to survive and protect her family.

Very interesting vampire book about their trying to overcome their problem with sunlight. There an humans that are hybrids who can turn into vampires but they all have unique special powers. I young hybrid girl is being hunted. An old vampire with a rare blood disease thinks that her blood could save him and help with the sun. I was into this book right away. The only thing I could have done without is the explicit sex. I think they could have done that a little better. I'm sure that I will read the next in this series soon.

Fantastic
I loved this book and was really hoping for more. I keep checking to see if anymore have been written. Piper is a great story teller. You will NOT be disappointed.

Parts were good. There were interesting twists and details. But something was missing. I kept feeling like, “any page now, things will get exciting.” It never did. Even the ending was flat.

Review originally posted on my blog: A Book Obsession..
Losing a spouse is hard enough, but not knowing what really happened is a crushing weight that Caro has dealt with for the past ten years after her husband disappeared somewhere in the African Rainforest. Left alone to raise their young daughter, Vivi, Caro hadn't so much as looked another man. Not that she would have had the time as they are still on the run from those who would seek to exploit Vivi's uniqueness. Yet, all that changes when Caro starts to realize that the vampire she has come to rely on over the past decade may actually mean more to her than just a friend. Yet time is precious as the vultures tracking them are circling, and this time escape may not be an option.
One of the most amazing things about HUNTING DAYLIGHT was the way it blended so many different elements together into a perfect balance. There was plenty of action, to the point where I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. The character development was astounding, and I really felt thoroughly connected to all of them. There wasn't a two dimensional character in the bunch, only fully realized ones that kept you ensnared by the heart strings. And oh! The romance was incredibly sweet yet also so hot, it practically steamed right off the page. It is very rare for an author to not only have that sort of blend in a novel, but also be able to pull it all together seamlessly, and yet in HUNTING DAYLIGHT Piper Maitland seemed to do it effortlessly.
Despite my love of this book and the series as a whole, there was one issue that just about burst my bubble. I was fully and utterly immersed in this HUNTING DAYLIGHT, no small feat considering the hefty length, right up until about the last hundred pages when a twist wrenched its way into the middle of things. But despite that twist I held out hope that it wouldn't irrevocably change things in the romance department. Unfortunately, my worst fears were realized, and in all honestly I felt absolutely miserable after finishing this book. I was literally heartsick. In fact I had to wait several days before writing this review to gain a little bit of detachment from things so I could look at it a bit more objectively. Granted, I have a feeling a lot of people will actually really enjoy that twist, but for me it was devastating. I can only hope that the next book will somehow pick up the pieces and give me the outcome I had hoped for, even if it probably wasn't the "right" one.
I am still amazed at Piper Maitland's ability to craft such a lengthy, yet utterly engrossing story. Just like in ACQUAINTED WITH THE NIGHT, five hundred plus pages went by in just a blink of an eye, to the point where once I was finished, I just couldn't believe the book was over already. In my opinion, that shows true talent. I'm not saying it is easy to write a compelling two to three hundred page book, as I surely couldn't. But to be able to tell a story that never once falters or starts to drag after reaching the five hundred pages mark, is incredibly impressive in my opinion. I cannot wait to see what Piper has in store for us next! HUNTING DAYLIGHT was an incredible follow up, and a rare treat that is not to be missed!

Started out slow, picked up but then the ended felt rushed. Wanted to know more about this legacy but nothing additional. Then another cliffhanger. is there supposed to be another?

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Michelle L. Olson:
*ARC Received from the Publisher in exchange for an honest Review
When this book came in the mail from the Publisher and I looked up the series on GoodReads I knew immediately that I'd want to read them. I didn't, however, expect to enjoy it as much as I did.
This is a long book, it's 560 pages, and I absolutely could not put it down! My first reaction upon finishing it was this: "Oh wow! I rarely cry over books, but the hold that this book had over me & the ending had me in tears for sure. Outside of that, it was like a James Bond/Bourne Legacy flick meets Blood Diamond on paper, all with vampires... Super strong & sassy heroines. Incredible heroes. Utterly despicable villains, & a story that just wouldn't quit. I loved it all!!"
Husband and wife, Caro and Jude, are madly in love but in need of money. They have a 3 year old daughter whose very existence sparks fanaticism and has had them on the run for years just to be safe. You see, Caro is a hybrid, a 1/2 vampire, and Jude is a vampire, but wasn't when Vivi was conceived, thus making Vivi a 1/4 vampire and the talk of the entire immortal race for one reason or another; especially those that are of the paranoid or superstitious variety.
In order to make some extra money for the family, Jude decides to take a position in the African rainforests for a company called Al Din, utilizing his skills as a biochemist to study a new species of bat that has been discovered, but he has no idea what he's walking into there and he mysteriously disappears, leaving long time friend of the family and Godfather to Vivi, Raphael, to step in once again as protector and continue the farce he's played for well over a decade, denying his feelings for Caro while trying to convince himself that just being part of her and Vivi's life is enough.
*sigh* Oh how I'd love to tell you more, but I don't do spoiler reviews, so you're just going to have to check it out for yourself to find out what happens! :) Let me just say this in addition to my little summation in my intro above - While this book is an Urban Fantasy it felt so very real! While unbelievably action packed and full of twists and turns, danger, intrigue and surprises, it all felt like it could happen (albeit with a little stretch of the imagination of course, but that's why we read UF and PNR, right!?). It also has some wonderful romance, and was so vividly written in every aspect that I truly was drawn in and invested in everything the book had to offer.
LITERAL ADDICTION gives Hunting Daylight 5 Skulls and highly recommends it! The last bits of the book took my breath away and I can only hope that the next installment shakes things up even more. I have found a new top 10 UF series and can't wait for more from Piper.

There where some parts or rather say chapters I thought where a little to stretched and with the many events in this big book, it felt sometimes like being on a Roller Coaster that just did one ride to many because there where not enough people waiting in line for the next ride!?! Sometimes enough is enough and it is ready to continue the main threat of the story line.
This said, the last part of the book made it all better. I can only hope for next installment.

June 29, 2015I’ve discovered a new series! Today’s Book of the Day is two-for-one. Fellow Tennessee writer Michael Lee West has duplicated herself into writing alter ego Piper Maitland. Berkley sent “Hunting Daylight” by Piper Maitland for review. Along with it, they sent the first book in the series, “Acquainted with the Night.” I started reading the series and fell in love with both of them. If you read the cover of “Hunting Daylight,” the books come across as a paranormal romance. That shortchanges both and is far from truth. These are books about vampires for smart readers. Romance is the least of it. There’s action, strong characters, fast, easy writing, science, humor, suspense, murder, thrills, romance, smart concept, delightful plotting, and even the author commitment to not always write outcomes in the way that readers might want. It’s a ballsy ride. In a literary genre full of vampires jumping page-to-page confusing action with plot, this is a novel for the thinking reader. To enjoy the story to the fullest, start with the first one and read forward. I started with the second, stopped, went to the first, and was glad I did. Both books are over 500 pages and you’ll read them with the ease of 200.

I did not read the first book either like many reviewers have admitted; I didn't find that to be a problem and had a grand time with the vamps, hybrids, and nasty villians slinking and slurping around the fringes of the night until it finally dawns on them! I was impressed with the way the author, Piper Maitland, seamlessly switched point-of-view from omniscient to first-person; it added polish and panache' to a great escape read that may sink its fangs in you for a good night or two.

A new take on vampires with them being a lot easier to kill and more weakness than before. The book is enjoyable and action pack. This is a great read and well written. I will like to read more from this author in the future.

I was teetering between 3 and 4 stars. Towards the end I was leaning more towards 4, but the very last few pages bumped it down to a three. Way too soap opera-ish. Review to come.

I don't normally read vampire books, but I enjoyed this one. Much more than just a vampire story. It's part mystery and love story.

Way too much explicit um, "extracurricular" activities.

I loved it all but I wanted it to end differently

A bit of a disappointment after the first book. Continued reading as I did want to know where all this was going.

This isn't early Anne Rice, but it's entertaining and creative. An easy beach read for summer.
