Gr 1-3? Easy chapter book. Has an old fashioned feel - a story involving morals and do the right thing. They raise money for charity in washed out mayo jars. A more modern version would involve apps and online donations. Sweet story about giving to others and friendship. Harry's really not horrible in this one and I haven't read others in the series, just a little impish but he figures things out. Bonus: chocolate chip cookie recipe at end.

Harry wants to help his grandma buy a new stove but his idea of how to earn the money isn't a good choice. Harrys friend Doug tries to talk him out of it. This book is a good book to teach children about what is morally correct. Doug is a good friend and shows Harry that what he wants to do is wrong.

Doug and his classmates are going to sell items in their class to raise money for charity. Doug's friend Harry wants to get money so that his grandmother can get a new stove since her recently broke and he doesn't want Doug to tell any of his classmates about the broken stove. First they go to gym where the gym teacher offers them monopoly money to run laps (it is never revealed why he thinks this would be good motivation). Harry thinking that he is running for real money runs thirty some laps and is (rightfully) disgusted when he finds out he was only running for play money. Harry then decides that while he will make it look like he is selling his homemade soldiers for the Girl Scouts the "GS" in his sign will actually stand for "Granny's Stove" and he will split the money between the Girl Scouts and Granny's Stove. Doug thinks that this is cheating. He first tries to get Harry to price his soldiers too high so they don't sell. When Harry decides to put the soldiers on sale so they do sell Doug then offers to split a cookie with Harry if Harry will pay half the cost. Harry comes up with the money, but Doug lies and says he ate the whole cookie to show Harry how awful it is to have something stolen from you. Harry ends up doing the right thing and puts all of the money in for girl scouts. Doug gives him half the cookie he hid and explains why he lied and a classmate Mary overhears their conversation and says that her family is getting a new stove to match their yellow kitchen and Harry can have their old stove. This good news causes both boys to hug Mary which grosses her out.

Great book for mid-elementary children. This book teaches a great moral of not stealing. Doug encourages good behavior and helps Harry know what is right.

Harry is not having a great time, but he won't tell anyone why. This is another story that had me wondering if Harry would really do something horrible. Like, not just bugs and slimy things, but something really bad that he could get in a lot of trouble for.

Doug finally hears about Harry's problem, and I think he helps him in a really clever way, even though he didn't really like doing it the way that he did it. In the end, things all worked out and really, Harry thought about doing something incredibly horrible, but his heart was in the right place and he ended up not being horrible after all.

This is another one for the favourites.

Kline, S., & Wummer, A. (2013). Horrible Harry and the stolen cookie. New York: Viking.

This exciting book is written in the eyes of Harry's friend Doug. In the beginning of the story Doug noticed Harry is very upset about something. He isn't excited about his favorite hot lunch and doesn't show enthusiasm when its time for gym class, which is his favorite part of the day! Later in the day the teacher reminds them that they are going to be voting on the charities they want to donate money to during their annual "Sharing and Caring Tag Sale." His classmates are selling items such as friendship bracelets, warm cookies, and used books. But, Harry has a different plan. He tells Doug what has been bothering him all day and that he wants take the money he makes and give it to a different cause. Doug is not happy about this because that is lie and he is stealing from the other charities. Doug tries multiple different ways to get Harry to change his mind. Although Doug's plan might not be the nicest, it might just make Harry change his mind.

Questions from Bloom's Taxonomy
Applying: What examples can you remember that make Doug worried about Harry?
Analyzing: How would you compare Mary's family and Harry's family money status?
Evaluating: Do you agree with Harry taking the money for his grandma to buy a new oven? Why or why not?
Creating: What do you predict will happen with the oven? Will Emily's mother end up giving it to Harry's grandma for free?
Evaluating: Would it have been better if Doug made his point to Harry in a different way? Or did you think Doug made the right decision by tricking Harry?

This is the latest story in the Horrible Harry series by Suzy Kline. We've read many of the books in this series and found them to be funny, short, and entertaining. We've skipped around in the series some, but it doesn't seem to matter.

I thought that the fact that Harry's family needed money was an interesting aspect of the story. I also really liked that the children made and/or donated things to help support their causes. The chocolate chip cookie recipe at the back of the book looks yummy.

Overall, it was a short, fun read and we really enjoyed reading it together. We will certainly look for more of the books in this series at our local library.

I think the format of Harry worked better in the little stories instead of one drawn out story. Here he does exhibit bad behavior, but he corrects himself and in the end everything works out. Again, there is some genuine friendship and good people in this story. The theme of the book; that of giving to charity; runs throughout and is an important lesson.
