For when counting revision is not enough from a book, you could try this, which also brings in colours, and how secondary colours are formed. We start with ten lovely cats – a parent and nine kittens – and while the older one sleeps, the other nine start to play, and that play includes breaking into pots of paint... There's detail and character galore in the pictures of the messy, rascally moggies, and even if all the text is doing is telling us what we're seeing there's actually no small narrative here, meaning this successfully disguises the lessons it has to convey behind a thick wall of humorous entertainment. A fine success – four and a half stars.
Lots of opportunities to engage young children here: in addition to counting the cats, you can look for the ones with stripes, and the ones with dots of yellow paint. Builds focus and visual discrimination while teaching numbers and colors.
Using amusing illustrations of 10 mischievous kittens playing with cans of red, yellow, and blue paint. The story begins with 1 white cat (the mother) laying down to take a nap. Soon the kittens are playing with the cans of paint, which, naturally, come open. As the brief text describes the number of kittens such as "4 cats with patches", the illustrations show the mischief they get into while mother cat snoozes happily. Once the tubs of paint tip over, the mess the kittens make gets bigger and bigger until even sleeping mama can't avoid being involved. The humor combines simply but delightfully with the counting and mixing of colors to present not only a counting and color book but an amusing tale of mischief and mayhem. Thankfully, the mother cat got in a good nap because once she wakes up, she'll need all the energy she can muster to deal with the mess. A book that young listeners/readers are bound to enjoy reading again and again, just to spot all the details of the 10 kittens. In addition to the original counting activity, there are numerous ways to practice counting while reading aloud with a child. Perfect for sharing one-on-one or in a group.
Being a sucker for a book about cats, I had to flick through this one at Whitstable yesterday when I saw it. It’s so adorable! A fun counting and seeking book for children about a white cat and her multicoloured kittens. As the book progresses, the kittens get into various colours of paint and it gets very messy and colourful! Simple, cheerful, fun.
Such a great concept book! Colors, counting, and cats! It reminded me a bit of two of my favorite concept books - Alan Baker's Little Rabbit books and Ellen Stohl Walsh's Mouse books. White Rabbit's Color Book and Mouse Paint are both amazing. But so is 10 Cats! Such mischievous kittens! I highly recommend having some paints on hand so you can blend your own colors also.
The illustrations in this book are delightful. The text will also help the child with recognizing colours and numbers, and with counting. Like in all good picture books there is more story in the pictures. The text itself is simple and in a font that is easy for new readers to decode so this book would also suit beginner readers.
What a smart picture book! Few words but a real clever way of putting numbers, count and primary colours together. And all of that with cats! Also, I wish all the parents were as chill as this mum/dad cat!
This is such an adorable book for the little ones. My niece wants to flip through it over and over again. The pictures are cute and there is very little text to grasp some new vocabulary and learn how to count. I love it.
"10 Cats" is a picture book that was written by a female author named Emily Gravett. The book tells the story of ten cats that go around and play. Each and every page presents a new group of cats participating in a certain activity. For instance, jumping, hiding, climbing, and napping. The cats' habit of scaling various objects demonstrates their agility. Additionally, it will educate the kids how enthusiastically cats can jump around. One further thing the book depicts about cats is their need to hide.Every cat likes to play hide and seek, a game that even kids like to play. so the kids will have something in common between them and the cat that will make the book more fascinating to them. The book's final illustration revealed that the cat Cats have a more relaxed side, as demonstrated by the naps they take after all the play and other activities they enjoy. Through this book , kids can learn to count in an enjoyable and engaging way. I loved the colors used in this book, which perfectly express each cat's individual personality. This book, in my opinion, is fantastic for preschoolers who are eager to learn how to count. I think my students will love learning how to count and will relate to the cute cat characters' antics if I read this book to them in the future.
This delightful book goes beyond counting and introduces young readers to the primary colours and the art of colour mixing.
The story begins with a mother cat and her ten adorable kittens on the opening page. As the mother cat falls into a deep slumber, her mischievous little ones seize the opportunity to have some playful adventures of their own. Their misadventures commence when they stumble upon three cans of paint: one red, one yellow, and one blue.
With mischief in their hearts, they manage to pry open the lids and chaos ensues as they splatter themselves, the floor, and everything around them with red, then yellow, and finally blue splotches. Their playful escapades turn their surroundings into a vibrant playground where they experiment with mixing the three primary colours, resulting in mesmerizing shades of orange and green. In the end, the mother cat awakens from her blissful slumber only to discover the colourful mess and decides it's time for her mischievous little ones to have a thorough bath. Great fun.
What a delightful book! I read this to my 4-year-old cat obsessed granddaughter five times last night at her request. She "read" the pictures differently every time, enjoying the unfolding drama, with no need for me to read the simple counting text. Nine kittens run amok when mother cat takes a cat nap. Some foolish person has left three cans of paint unattended and the kittens gradually open and spill each one, mixing blue red and yellow into orange, green and purple. Gravett is a wonderful writer for this age, she know exactly how to unfold a story in illustrations. There is foreshadowing on each page, which is delightful for a preschooler to follow. My granddaughter and I laughed at their antics through all of the readings and she even made up appropriate names for each of the nine kittens, who are drawn delightfully true to life. This book makes me miss doing Preschool Story times during my long career as a Children's Librarian. A real winner for 3-5 year-olds!
First sentence: 10 Cats 1 white cat 2 black cats 3 cats with stripes 4 cats with patches
Premise/plot: 10 Cats is a super fun concept book starring ten lovable, adorable, precious cats. It is a counting book and a color book. These curious and mischievous kittens are exploring the wonders--for better or worse--with three paint cans. The three cans of paint are primary colors. This has a similar concept to Mouse Paint--an awesome picture book everyone should know. But it is unique as well.
My thoughts: I loved this one so much! I loved this Mama cat and her nine kittens. I loved the adventures and misadventures! The illustrations are so expressive. The text keeps it simple. But the illustrations are more than capable of telling--of carrying--the story.
Counting 1 to 10, identify the cats with the corresponding patterns and colors being talked about on each spread as some playful kittens get into some paint.
This is a quick counting book 1 to 10, but it has a hide and seek element in that on each spread you have to hunt out the 2, 3, 4, etc cats that match the description from chaos of active kittens on the page. The kittens also start mixing primary color paints and end up with secondary color splotches on themselves, so color mixing basics are also inadvertently highlighted. A great book for a young cat lover learning to identify patterns, count, and identify colors. And on top of all the educational benefits of the book, it's a fun read watching the kittens create a huge mess and then seeing the mother cat's reaction once she realizes what is going on.
I love Emily Gravett's work! She shines in taking a tried and true genre such as a counting book and making it something different and irresistible!
Here a snow white mother cat and her 9 kittens start play and nap around 4 cans of paint. As the kittens get into the paint, little footprints in bright colors are everywhere. Soon the paint spills and the colors mix and all the cats are a covered in splotches of colors. But the mom knows just what to do!
Adorable! Counting and color learning was never more fun.
As someone who loves board books, cats, and making messes (in the name of mixed media, of course!), 10 Cats was a joy from start to finish! Emily Gravett perfectly captures the chaotic charm of mischievous kittens who turn paint buckets into an art-filled adventure worthy of Jackson Pollock—all while their mom naps away. The colorful mess they create is adorable. This book is full of delightful details that make it perfect for repeat reading. A must-read for anyone who loves cats, colors, and a bit of creative chaos!
Very sweet book about cats, colors, and counting. I think the discussions that a teacher could have using this book with students would be great. That type of oral language is probably what I would use the book for the most in class. I think it would also be fun to use it with older readers as a mentor text to have them design another type of counting book that uses a new idea in a different way like this one does.
9 mischievous kittens and 1 momma cat. The concept is to introduce counting and colors. There are very few words, definitely meant for the youngest audience, but the words themselves are a bit complicated for that age group. Adults could possibly make it fun with sound effects or trying to get the child to point out objects. The ending fell flat.
A nice counting book with some visual interactivity. We are told there is 1 white cat. But unlike some counting books there is not only 1 white cat on the page. There are 10 cats. Where is the white cat? Where are the 4 cats with patches. My young human, who will be turning four next month, really enjoys seek and find type books.
Lately, he has also been fascinated by mixing colors.
A creative attempt of combing two concepts, counting and colors. Cats are not being counted this are kittens, curios kittens who are given a bath after the romp in the colors. Cats/ kittens don’t like water and baths. And then there are those digitally drawn eyes, not endearing cuddly kittens for me.
