Shelby has her hands full managing her new agency, but she’s determined to make it work. Her first case to track down stolen money leads her into the lingerie business where nothing is as it appears. She also finds plenty to keep her busy with the police department and Detective Harris. But all that pales in comparison to what she must do to help Uncle Joey, the local mob boss. When Chris receives threatening notes, and Hodges turns up dead, it is up to Shelby to determine what is going on and who is behind it all. It seems the past has a way of catching up with her. Soon, Shelby must use all her wits to stay alive, and her only option? Lie or Die.

Love this story, but I'm glad Chris has finally started to get on board and become Shelby's cheerleader. His subtle misogyny was getting on my last nerve. It's funny how people grow and their tolerance level for things changes. When I read this series last year, Chris' behavior didn't bother me as much. I was a little more willing to accept it. That was my bad.

This book was fantastic! I think it's my favorite of the series. Shelby is learning how use her 'super power' with more finesse, and she's definitely getting smarter about how she reacts to the thoughts of others! I love how she handles the situations where people are thinking some nasty stuff about her, (even though they don't even know her!) and instead of getting mad she talks to the person and changes their opinion of her.

Shelby's man is in trouble, and it's time for her to take matters in to her own hands... with Uncle Joey's help, of course. It's nice to have friends in powerful places, well, maybe not friends, but as close as a mob boss can get. Something is going down in the city, something big that has Uncle Joey worried, but he's willing to help Shelby out since he's got a stake in Chris' high profile case involving a well-known business man... in return for her help of course.

Some old friends and foes are back in this exciting new Shelby Nichols Adventure! It's fun, humorous, and definitely a Must Read! :)

"Lie or Die" is another great installment in the Shelby Nichols Adventure Series. This time Shelby takes on her first consulting job. It seems that a bank wants to recover the missing money from a bank robbery. Unfortunately, the private detective they hired, Robert Felt, feels Shelby is involved in illegal activities and refuses to leave her alone because his reputation is in the line and he wants the finder's fee.

Meanwhile, our favorite crime boss, Uncle Joey, the knife wants Shelby's help to determine who he can trust to promote. There is a big court case that could put his operations at stake if his accountant's firm loses and oddly enough Shelby's husband, Chris inherited the case when one of the lead attorneys is viciously attacked. Now Shelby is worried about Chris' safety.

After a few missteps, it is clear someone wants Uncle Joey in jail. It will take all of Shelby's talent and more to keep that from happening. Once again, Helme provides her readers with a bevy of wonderfully colorful characters including one of Shelby's nemesis. Additionally, Shelby's husband, Chris continues to grow on me as well as Joey's security expert, Ramos. I am not sure how Helme plans to resolve this quandary but I am looking forward to reading about it! This series just keeps getting better and better. I can't wait to read the next installment.

Am definitely hooked! As soon as if finished reading this I downloaded the rest of the series
:)
Seriously loving the situations Shelby finds herself in and the others who are helping her!
We're starting to learn more about uncle Joeys organisation and his men, but he seems quite taken with our Shelby.. Not in a romantic way but family wise....
Liking the character 'Dimples' and I love that that's what Shelby calls him, glad he's still here in the story and hopefully he'll continue to be :)
Time for the next one.....

Book 3 And still going strong

Absolutely great mystery series. And it is so nice to see the heroine and her husband in a loving relationship. One also grows fonder of Uncle Joey the mob boss and of course Ramos his bodyguard. The characters are quirky, lovable, and oh so human. The idea of a formerly normal housewife developing mind reading capacity and then getting shoehorned into helping a mob boss is brilliant. I am looking forward to reading the entire series.

Another close call

Shelby has to help Joey again. Like in the past, she finds herself in another deadly situation. I thought Uncle Joey was bad but there's a more deadly ruthless killer in town. There's someone from the past back. There are a couple of close calls for Shelby. I like Detective Harris. He gets into a bad spot in this book. I can't wait to see what trouble Shelby gets into next.

II requested to receive this book in exchange for a review through Audiobook Jukebox after having read and listened to the first two books in this, the Shelby Nichols Adventures, series by Colleen Helme. This series revolves around a housewife and mother of two who has acquired the "super power" to read minds. This ability, known by a very few, allows her to willingly help the police solve crimes and not-so-willingly help a local mob boss know who is loyal and who isn't. Someday soon, I suspect she will also help her attorney husband, but that hasn't come to fruition yet.

This series is a light read mystery/suspense and each book is stand-alone. When previous events or former characters are mentioned, the author does a good job filling the reader in on the relevant highlights from a previous book without overwhelming the reader with a long non relevant summary. Also, the author does a fine job keeping the multiple story lines separate and distinct -- it seems that there is a story line related to a case of her husband's, a story line with the mob boss and another relating to s case being investigated by the police. Sometimes two of the story lines are related and the author brings them together smoothly.

Each audio book in the series is approximately 8 1/2 hours (the books are a slightly under 300 pages in length) and are all narrated by Wendy Tremont King. She does a fine job reading and giving each character his or her own voice. She also reads consistently from one book to the next -- keeping the pace similar and the different voices similar from one book to the next.

I would recommend this to all readers enjoying mystery and suspense as well as those who like a lighter read with amiable characters. This would be a good book/series to listen to on a long drive, enough going on for the whole family to enjoy and nothing truly inappropriate for young adults (a quick death or two in each book and loving parents, but nothing explicit or "R" rated).

“Lie or Die” is a MUST READ!!!
I absolutely loved reading “Lie or Die” by Colleen Helme!!! I was impressed with the intricacies of the book, and was amazed by how everything turned out! There were so many twists and turns and I was kept guessing until the end. Shelby is such a great character! I’m happy she’s come into her own and can really use her mind reading ability to help others, and once again, get herself out of some sticky situations.
All of the characters are well-developed and consistent throughout the series, not only in their actions, but also in their thoughts! I’ve grown fond of each character and feel like I know them personally. I’m glad Shelby still has to work for Uncle Joey…and it helped that Ramos was in it too! I also like Chris more and more. I can sympathize with him. I know I wouldn’t want anyone reading my mind! Although I think he’s beginning to take it all in stride and I know that he really loves and cares about Shelby.
Although this series is definitely fantastical, it has a sense of realism to it. The characters are believable, and the stories are fun and full of mystery and mischief at the same time. I love books that let me escape my reality, and give me something fun to look forward to. Colleen’s books definitely do this. I found myself laughing out loud several times throughout the series! “Lie or Die” is no different! This is a fantastic read, and I recommend it to anyone who loves a fun, well-written, laugh out loud book!

Lie or Die: A Shelby Nichols Adventure Book 3 is another fantastic adventure with Shelby, Chris, Uncle Joey (not really her uncle), Ramos, and detective Dimples (not his real name).

I adore the characters in this series. They are full of personality and spunk. Each character is continuing to develop and even when they get themselves into unbelievable situations they make it seem plausible. I would have a hard time picking a favorite character because I enjoy them all.

Shelby is finally embracing her mind reading abilities and using them to make a difference in the world. She has decided to open her own “consulting” agency. Her husband, Chris, has justified concerns about this new venture.

It isn’t long before Shelby finds herself having to jungle new business responsibilities with Uncle Joey’s and the local police department need for her “special” skills, carpool days, and trying to decide what to cook for dinner.

This is a great series to read or listen to. Wendy Tremont King does a fantastic job with narration. The audiobook quality is very good and she brings the characters to life by given each one a unique voice. She is very easy to listen to and is a great compliment to Colleen Helme’s great writing.

If you love mystery, suspense, and great characters that make you laugh then this is a series you don’t want to miss. Start with book 1, Carrots. You don’t want to miss out on the story of how Shelby received her “gift”.

It can't be easy knowing what everyone is thinking around you. Shelby Nichols knows the consequences all too well. The third book in her series has her rushing around trying to help everyone. What a busy stay at home mom between helping a bank manager find stolen money, helping "Uncle" Joey with his business, trying to keep her husband from being threatened at his job, helping the police, and still having time to pick up her children and plan a vacation is super impressive.

I think she's dealing with her abilities well. During the second book I wasn't sure if I approved but now I realize she's learning and taking her skills in stride. I love it. Still completely unpredictable. I have no idea where she's going to be off to next. Not to mention the picture frame incident was hilarious.

Shelby quickly grew on me and I'm hoping this isn't the last I'll see of her. Ramos is one of my favorite characters as well so hopefully, I see him more often as well. Too fun. Comedy, drama, suspense, it's all in there. You won't be disappointed.

Wendy is back to voice Shelby. I'm so glad she's the narrator for this whole series. Wendy IS Shelby for me. She brings Shelby to live via voice. Perfect. Wendy's audio is always clear and clean. So easy to listen to her. Thank you!

Everything Shelby does is important. It seems every aspect of what we see with Shelby is key in her case, things she does with Uncle Joey, or with her family and husbands work. I love how the story flows and all feels important.

I love Shelby's interaction with her husband, Ramos, and even with Uncle Joey. She's so laid back and there's always some sort of oops that happens. Everyone seem to expect it with Shelby and shake their heads and chuckle. It's wonderful.

Always so fun to go with Shelby on her adventures. Sure, she gets into trouble and dangerous moments. But it's seeing how she reacts along with those around her. It's wonderful seeing the fun and light feeling Shelby brings to the day. I just love her outlook on everything, everyone, and life.

This series just gets better and better! This book begins with Shelby starting her new agency and looking to find the stolen money for which the bank has hired her. We get to see her in action, which is fun, humorous, and exciting. We also run into Uncle Joey, Dimples, and my favorite, Ramos. This book kept me guessing to the very end as to how Shelby was going to manage everything on her plate, and keep from getting killed. I loved how her relationship evolved with her husband Chris, mostly because I can't imagine how hard it would be to be married to someone who could read my mind. I also found myself laughing out loud, and cheering for all of my favorite characters. Uncle Joey really shines here, and he has one of the best lines in the book! I won't give it away, but it was awesome! You don't have to read the other books to enjoy this one, but with such a great series, it would be a shame not to! Read it! You'll be glad you did.

Loved this book! Vaguely reminiscent of the Stephanie Plum series, but Shelby is definitely a unique character in her own right! This was such a lighthearted book, and a quick and easy read. The only thing that probably could be better is the cover. Anyone (and I admit, at times I am guilty of this) who judges a book by its cover may make the mistake of passing this awesome book up, which would be a shame since its sooo great! If the cover were a bit more intriguing to look at, this would be a homerun! Regardless of the cover however, I completely recommend this book. Five stars all the way and excellent job Ms. Helme! *** UPDATE 9/12/13*** NEW COVER IS SUPER AWESOME! Absolutely love it!

Lots more awesome adventure for Shelby and I love how she is coming more into her one with regards to her mind reading abilities and helping people also speaking her mind with uncle joey she really is coming out of her house wife shell and rocking it. Chris also surprised me more in this book he is coming around to lovingly accept Shelbys gift more and being more supportive even when she worries him sick...lol

Dimples

I love these characters. This story is so funny I have to stop just to catch my breath. Shelby is still trying to manage everything. I don't know how she does what she does buying is working out. Ramos is intense and then Uncle Joey is manipulative and then her involvement with the police. I think she is to kind hearted. I hope her business works out.

Just finished this morning. I enjoy this series of books. I'm a fan of books that add a small edge to normal life and make things different. The plot continued to build on hanging threads from previous books and the characters are still enjoyable overall.

Audio book review.

Ah, I love getting back to a cast of familiar characters to find out what they're up to now. Shelby can read minds, and it has caused her to get into some truly unique situations. She's unsure how to best handle her gift around her husband (who knows) and kids (who don't), she refers to it as a premonition feeling when helping the local police department (who have no issue using a psychic to get a lead on a case), and she's reluctantly called to assist local crime boss Uncle Joey and his handsome assistant Ramos whenever they have need of her skills.

I found the story in this book hard to follow. Similar to when I read other cozy mysteries like Darynda Jones' Charley Davidson series, I'm WAY more interested in the character development and backstory, so the mystery part of the book takes a back seat in my mind, making it hard for me to follow. Not only that, there are multiple cases to solve in this book, and I can't keep straight who belongs with what case and what situation and what time or day it is. Luckily, I'm in love with the characters, and they sort of help me coast through the twisted detective bits that I have a hard time following. So many side characters, sometimes I just can't keep up, but the main characters are very memorable. I love Uncle Joey, Ramos, our main character Shelby, her husband Chris. They all have such unique voices and presences. I can't WAIT to continue on with this series, even if I can't remember details from each book. I can always read them again!

Small spoilers from here.
One thing I didn't really like about this story was the title and where it came from in the book. Shelby and Chris are having a discussion about Shelby's ability and the strain it's putting on their relationship. There are many things that go unsaid. Chris is feeling left out, because Shelby isn't sharing everything she knows, and Shelby is warring with herself over what she should and should not share, because if she didn't have this gift she wouldn't know any of it! Chris asks her if there's anything she's lied about recently, to which Shelby replies "That's not fair" instead of answering. Then she follows up a bit later with a line like "If it comes down to it, I would always rather lie than die". I don't know why, but this line seems to me to be setting up the end of their warm and cozy relationship, like she will always be lying to him if her life is in danger, which it frequently is. Later on in the book, Chris seems to sort of get over his anger about Shelby's gift and we think maybe he's accepting her as she is. To me, it feels like maybe he's giving up and getting ready to let her go. I dunno. It would be really sad if that were to happen, but kinda inevitable if he's going to be so obstinate. I personally want her to end up with Ramos, but messing up the happy family is going to be ugly no matter how it's written. We shall see how it goes!!

Wow, I am so glad I found this series as each book just seems to get better and better as we learn a bit more about each character.
This is book three and carries on from Book two rounding up a few lose ends. (You don't need to have read book two but frankly why wouldn't you?) Namely looking Into the missing money from the bank robbery and trying to work out who the partner of the dead robbed is. Shelby has her work cut out for her as with a dead suspect she has no one to focus her mind reading powers at and has just the one clue that she got from the robber before he died, This leads to a lingerie shop and some strange customers but just as things on the stake out get interesting Shelby's husband life is threatened if he doesn't lose the court case he is working on. This provokes mixed feeling for Shelby as the case involves the local mob boss and winning or lossing the case could get Chris hurt either way. There is also a turf war going on which has her mixing with the FBI, gang members, the police hit men, an annoy private investigator and an old unwanted friend. All of Which could prove to be hazardous to Shelby and Chris's life. All in all its never a dull life for Shelby Nichols.
The narrator is very good and easy to listen to. I hope she reads all the books in this excellent series as it is a series you will want to get every book for.

Great Mystery Adventure Series!

Shelby is always has a couple of mysteries to solve and a few minds to read. With Uncle Joey involved there are close calls on Shelby's life but Uncle Joey will protect her and her family the best he can from harm. Though working with a powerful mob boss and staying within the law is challenging at best. Chris, Shelby's husband, is getting much better in his comfort level with Shelby always reading his thoughts. His life is in danger during this trial he is litigating and Uncle Joey is being targeted. It's up to Shelby to figure out if it is the same person targeting them. Shelby is also working with police dept. using her "psychic" abilities. As a private consultant, she is working a bank theft case trying to find the money. However, she has a P.I. as a constant tail who is out for the finder's fee. Always new adventures to keep the pages turning! !

Good to the last word

Colleen Helme has written this set of books, Shelby Nichols Adventure that I’ve just recently discovered, I have become enthralled in this series to the point I binge read all 14 start to finish with the extra book, Devil in a Black Suit, in just a few days. They are so addictive, each one could be taken as stand alone, but they are so much more satisfying read together in order.
The characters are incredible and while I don’t ever do spoilers I will say to me, the heroine was like reading a very satisfying mix in soccer mom form of toned down, mature married version of Janet Evanovitch’s Stephanie Plum meets Jana DeLeons Fortune Redding. The antics, male counterparts and plots are wonderful. Yes, I am posting this same review on each of the books, but they are all just that dang good!

Mind reading is a super power

Shelby is a wife, mother & private investigator with a secret weapon; she can read minds. She helps out the police by telling them she is psychic & has premonitions which helps solve cases. Unfortunately, there's a mobster, Joey the knife who knows her secret. He calls on Shelby when he needs to know what others are thinking. Things tend to get out of hand with Shelby getting into trouble trying to solve cases without being killed in the process. She does all this while raising 2 teens who don't know Mom's super power but her handsome, lawyer husband does. Makes me wonder what I would do if I could read minds. Looking forward to the next story.

This is the 3rd book in the Shelby Nichols Adventures that began with [Carrots]. The author lets her imagination fly and gets her heroine in and out of many absurd and fantastical situations for her local mob boss, while keeping her lawyer husband somewhat informed of the life and death happenings occurring around her.

I enjoyed the escapism of the story but could only rate this 3 stars not because of the fantastical elements but because the tone is anti-woman and this is the type of tale that a young adult would pick up for entertainment and not with a thought to any underlying message.

Lie or Die - book 3 of Shelby Nichols Mysteries - FANTASTIC

Shelby’s adventures are a roller-coaster ride. I don’t usually ride them, but you can’t keep me off them. Just finished book 3 and can’t wait to start book 4. If you’re looking for a fun and twisting ride in a story—hop aboard. Get all of Colleen Helme’s books. I bought six more after reading the second one. I’ll get the rest after that. All I can say, when are they going to make these books into movies. Ms. Colleen - you are great!!!!

Awesome Series

Shelby's adventures with her ability to read minds is awesome. I love this book because it not only has great characters but multiple plot lines. Shelby is working on cases for the mob boss, for the police, for the FBI, and for her newly established consulting business. The action is non-stop. The pace is fast, and the cases flow together seamlessly. I loved this book.

Better & better

This series keeps up my interest & my laughs! Without even trying Shelby finds herself in trouble, usually with a gun pointed at her, & her only help is using her wits as she reads minds. Oh yeah, Uncle Joey & Ramos might have something to do with her safety. Great characters & plotting with several cases happening simultaneously. Can't wait to continue this funny, well written series!

“Oh, so it’s a super-power now?”

Shelby is in high demand. Uncle Joey’s still around, so is Dimples. Of course, there are some new faces too, and not all of them want Shelby anywhere near them. Each book gets better as we learn more about the characters and and they’re learning more about each other. Amazing series! Enjoy!!!
