Apparently a very mixed side fic in the FoE community. You either love, or you either loathe it. I happen to be part of the party that enjoys it. It's not without it's flaws, and it's drama is a lot more intense than the original FoE (the author has clinical depression, so I assumed that's just how he wrote since he knew about feelings like that the best), but it certainly has a special place in my heart for making me continue loving FoE, even inspiring some of the characters I made for the setting.

before anyone reads this, if i'm lucky enough to catch you early enough, please imagine for a moment a cake. it's a good cake, with delicious icing and everything. now imagine 3000 of those cakes stacked on top of each other, fighting gravity and common sense in an effort to not collapse under it's own weight and structural integrity. that is this. by the gods, be prepared for "what the fuck do we do now" and "oh shit, i've died once again" because this is the homestuck of fanfiction.

What a read...Project Horizons tends to get a lot of criticism because of its length, but I feel the length was perfect.

This is a book that, to me, is life changing. Its character, Blackjack goes through such an adventure and is so believable, it is hard not to form a personal connection to her when you are reading. Feeling her hardships, her struggles, and her happiness was just...amazing.

The writing is stellar in this book, being far better than the writing in the original Fallout: Equestria. It is obvious there has been countless hours of work poured into this story just to make sure everything flows nicely, which it does. Some of the descriptions can be long (really long) but they add to the immersion and help build the world of Hoofington.

All of the characters in this book are memorable, to Blackjack's companions, all the way down to the most minor side-character, they were all believable, well-written, and felt so alive.

This story is a massive undertaking if you want to read it, and I warn everyone that wants to this read: Be sure you have a heart of steel, because some sections in this story will test your resolve. A few chapters caused me to stop reading this thing for weeks because they hit me so hard. But you must keep going, because it is just stellar.

So I give this a perfect five. This story connected to my heart and changed me. It is a story that will probably be my favorite for my whole life. Yes, it is that life-altering. I hope I can re-read this beast again, get to experience the whole journey and live it again.

While Somber's ability to create atmosphere is one of the story's major pluses, the rest of it falls flat in terms of delivery and character. Extremely over-sexual even to those who like a more mature story, to the point it detracts from the plot; hundreds of characters that suffer in development, including a straight up rip-off of Armstrong from FMA; and plenty of questionable morals, like the primary lesbian character being pressured to be bisexual by her girlfriend because 'bisexual is better' - resulting in an orgy between the main character, her gay male rape victim, and her lesbian girlfriend.

There is also a sex scene between a minor and an adult that the author calls 'consensual', even though this character is very clearly displayed with child-like mannerisms - but she was stated to have had sex with loads of other children before that, so it's fine, right?

A lot of potential, and I do like some of the earlier scenes, but it seems to only exaggerate all of its worst qualities as it goes on. It's sort of the 'Fifty Shades of Grey' of the fandom, to be honest; sure, plenty of people like it, but plenty of people hate it for the problems listed above. Bear all that in mind when deciding to read for yourself.

Giving it 6/10 stars. Would be 9/10 if the author didn't mess up so badly with inconsistency and female sexuality. Especially with their seeming unwillingness to fix their mistakes, or even just learn from them. It does sadly heavily negatively impact the story.

It is however a overall really good read. It does jump the shark and change it's rules a number of times. And amusingly, this is supposedly done to avoid leaving loose threads. But only leaves more things to interpretation as the author hurls things out the window in favor. To make a unrelated parallel: See it like in a M. Night movie where it's established that you can or can't do x, because reasons. Then halfway through the movie, they do it anyway, because... "meh". And then it's never addressed again. And the movie just hopes we forget about it. That's something this book does a number of times.

But, that aside, it is really well written, and flows nicely. It has interesting characters and the world is expansive. I will say though, I will mostly focus on what's bad about the story rather than what's good. As, if you like Fallout Equestria, and overall grimdark stories. Chances are you will like this.

So, I am instead going to focus on what might turn you off. Or at least to give a fair warning of what to expect. None of these are really "plot twists", but more just flaws of the author. That if anything, are just more likely to have you go "wait, what?" when reading. Assuming you do some vague constructive thinking while reading.

I am going to give mild spoilers below. And will cut to spoiler tag once it reveals more than the "back blurb".
1: For starters, as the info points out. The protagonist is essentially brought up in a feminazi utopia. More or less. Only females are allowed to be in charge. And males are basically cattle, with the sole function to be sex slaves and satisfy the females. Now, with that in mind. Most of you should be able to imagine what kind of mindset this protagonist has.
->
Now, take those perceived ideals that she is likely to have, hurl them out the window, and replace them with the polar opposite. And no, you are never given any explanation whatsoever to how she came to be so "ass backwards" within her own societies lens. She see's males as the stronger gender, thinks the entire point about sex is to get the male off. Counts "rounds" of sex with male orgasms instead of female. See's promiscuous males as "studs". Is unable to wrap her head around the idea of a female proud of her sexuality/genitals. (Ex: There's TONS of references to how a male has "such a big penis" or any other trait of a penis but not once do any character comment about a vulva in any way.) Tries to brag about having sex, by citing the penis size of her partner, or talking about how good at pleasuring himself using her body her male partner was. (And also uses this to promote a male as a partner to another female; by pointing out how he is great at using her for his pleasure...) Or, thinks that the best way to get over sexual abuse, is to get sexually abused on purpose.
->
This isn't limited to the main character. Another trainwreck is how there is a "biological consensus" in the wasteland, that all females are just "better than that", and will not sink so low as to rape. While being totally okay with murder, slavery, torture and insert any other debauchery you can think off, INCLUDING making males in their gang rape other females, or even children. THAT they are totally fine with. No moral qualms whatsoever. But sexually forcing themselves onto others, that's just taking it too far. (But as said: Making a male do it in their place: No problem.)

A lot of the issues seem to stem from the author having poor knowledge in certain areas, and refusing to study them. Or simply loops up a single source. As, if going with claims from the official forums: They only once asked a female for feedback about female sexuality. And that was a true submissive, that thinks only males should be dominant, and see's no way a female can be dominant or brag about their physical endowment. Now, that isn't confirmed keep in mind. But it would explain how the sexuality in PH can be so immensely skewed and incorrect/one sided.

5: Not much of a spoiler, but the author also has a habit of shoehorning in pop culture references. Atop with running gags, that not a single person aside from the author finds funny. Won't give anything away here but: There's a part where a character gloats about a male being a "stud". Instead of using that term on herself. As, she is trying to impress someone with how many ponies she's slept with. But for the sole dumb reason of the author not knowing how to write gender roles (or w/e to call it) you basically have a character going "I just got fucked by this dude, he was amazing at using me for his pleasure. He couldn't get me off for shit, but I'm not gonna bring that up, and instead just talk about how awesome he is. So, what do you say, wana bang me after I just talked about how terrible in the sack this random dude I praised for being great at getting himself off is?" and this joke gets repeated for like... 30 chapters I think it is. Sometimes up to 5 times.

And again... like it points out on the back blurb: She's essentially from a feminazi matriarchy. And somehow her idea of trying to come off as sexually desirable, is to brag about how many times a male was able to use her for his own enjoyment... and SOMEHOW, this also impresses a lot of characters. By having them in awe of this male that can't pleasure women. Along while they giggle and mock the protagonist for being a "floozy". Using current world societal standards and etc makes no sense whatsoever, and has no room in a post apocalyptic Equestria.

I can also say that, while not related to the book. It is rather shoddy how the overall fan reaction to these mistakes are that off "Yeah... it sucks. But just ignore them. And don't you dare bring them up.", not really the most encouraging but oh well... really hope they're not pulling the same shit on their next project. As it would be sad if they haven't learned anything from writing this piece of mixed, glorious trainwreck. If I'd have to sum it up... kinda picture it like one of the best three part, ~8 hour total movies you've ever seen. But a quarter in, it pulls a racist stereotype from the 50's, that you can't believe they pulled as a joke. But then it turns out that no, this is a new main character, and said char follows through the rest of the movie. But the movie keeps going regardless, it's bloody amazing. Then halfway through, they defeat the bad guy by farting in his face. And you do a double take of "did that you f-ing happen?", and throughout, epic scenes are ruined by the equivalence of poorly timed, bad slapstick. And well, kinda stuff like that. There's just so much that you go "Why?" over. And question how the heck it got greenlit. It's still a great ride. But it could have been amazing~

Very dark, very long, very explicit, both in its violence and in its sexuality. It starts off a bit rough, but then it starts rolling together, falling into its own groove, and it turns into an enjoyable ride. Then the plot grows, and grows, with every answered question raising two new ones. Eventually, the big questions start getting answered without creating new ones, but there are so many questions that it still takes chapters and chapters to wind everything down, and it just drags and drags.

Another review described it as "the Homestuck of fanfiction", which is a spot-on comparison. It starts out good, then it grows too big for its own weight, and then it all tumbles down in a series of big emotional climaxes.

There are plenty of problems with Project Horizons...

But just like Homestuck, when it works, it WORKS. It grabs your attention and doesn't let go. The characters are compelling, the action is tense, the setting is vivid, and if you can get past the self-flagellation, the moral choices and sacrifices are very satisfying to read through. Project Horizons isn't a story about winning. It's a story about whether you should even play the game at all.

Overall, I would not recommend it as an introduction to the Fallout Equestria setting, but if you've read Fallout Equestria and are looking for more work in that setting, it's easily my favorite side story.

Do better.

Ante up.

Many interesting lore expansions of the world of Fallout Equestria, with fun and likeable characters, marred over time by anime-esque meandering and shallow edginess, misery porn for misery porn's sake, along with a few cringy OC self insert fantasies fangirling for the original FoE here and there.

Worth reading if you're a fan of Fallout Equestria, both the original fic and the MLP fic sub-genre for the worldbuilding, but starts going downhill rapidly after the first third due to seemingly anime-inspiration and misery porn without understanding the psychology of the tragedies the characters go through, and thus not really coming into any depth or development from the misery porn, misery porn for misery porn's sake.

This may be the best example of a book written chapter by chapter over years with live audience feedback and a truly massive and well flushed out cast of characters and world that has ever been written.

What can I say? Would I finish a book with over 4000 pagas without loving it? Surely not. This masterpiece is maybe even better than original Fallout Equestria.

Original plot overexpansion and contradictions. Somber tries to explain every little thing. There are some very bad anime references. Still, very involving and interesting.

good book but can't recommend because it takes a while for the author to find his talent ... And In a book this long a while is a long time. but once he does it beats the original

One of the longest work of fiction ever made, and it's disapointing to say the least. I'd still recommend it if only for Somber's excellent writing in the first 20 chapters.

My actual favorite of the three Fallout Equestria "Big Three". Blackjack is a viscerally tragic conduit for tragedy, but somehow manages to always keep going

Back for the second rendition of Wasteland ponies is Project Horizons, which puts you smack dab into the middle of Blackjacks life: an exiled whiskey chugging security mare from an underground vault built to shield its inhabitants from the cruel post-nuclear armageddon world. When an attack is laid on the bunker to collect a mysterious file labeled EC-1011, she is forced out, along with one of the few males of the vault and the file itself. Quickly becoming a high value target on the surface, she must find the meaning of the file and endure the harsh environments in this epic 6,000 page masterpiece by Somber.

Well, after reading what is widely accepted as the first volume of this book, I can tell you one thing: you are in for a wild ride. The characters are vibrant and not by any means monotonous. The plot coherence to the first book is nearly perfect, save for a few small slip-ups. And yet with all these positives I find myself often putting this book down after one or two chapters. Why is this? Well, the short answer is the length. You can easily find yourself biting off more than you can chew, and swimming through piles of words describing beautiful character development, but not as action packed and page turning as it's predecessor. By no means is this bad, but I myself prefer a little more adventure in something like this. Even still, this book has yet to turn me off of its trail.

The development of the book is beautiful, and following the trope of the stories in this series offers a virtue that is portrayed and defined over the course of the story. The one that this story uses is perseverance, which I believe is quite easily seen over even the portion that I read. One of my favorite quotes that is an example of this is from a character named Watcher: “[on the topic of the death of the innocent] You do everything you can to make up for it, knowing that you’ll never succeed in getting rid of the guilt.  You devote yourself to spending every second trying to do better despite the fact that it will never be enough.  And you pray with every single good act you do that somehow when your life is over that your lifetime will come close to make up for the wrong you committed.” It emanates hope and energy, and is one of the many points at which this book offers insightful advice. Many readers can connect to the characters, and often you begin to empathize with them and feel hurt inside when they do. The characters are well done to say in the least, and contrast with one another to bring out some of their best traits.

All in all, this is an essential read for those of you coming off of the original books hype train hungry for more. The vivid gritty settings portrayed are more uncompromising then that of the first, and the emotional characters can draw a tear from even the toughest of eyes, so be prepared. Due to the fact that it is a side story, however, a basic understanding of the plot line from the first book is necessary. Overall, this book now has a special place in my heart, and I hope to continue this oddesey for as long as it takes.

This was really, really hard to put down! I hate that is stops at chapter 58, but everything up to that point is amazing! I think I like this just as much as I like the original Fallout Equestria story. I hope I can someday read the rest of the chapters and find out what happens to our heroes. ^_^

*Edit*
I was able to find the rest of the story! I will update my review as soon as I finish it!

*Completed @ 2:22am!*
The rest of this story was amazing! I had the hardest time putting this down and not reading until the wee hours of the morning! I have no idea why I like this story so much. Maybe I can relate to how Blackjack, the main character, is since I'm going through a lot of the same feelings with things going on in my life at the moment. Being unemployed will give you a lot of time to do things that are positive, like learn a new skill or lose weight, but being unemployed will also give you a lot of time to do things to beat yourself down and make you not want to get off of your own self-made mattress. I've fought being on my own mattress and have gotten up a few times, but I've also gotten stuck back there a few times too. Thinking of what Blackjack went through, and knowing how "human" she is throughout the story, really makes me know I can get off that mattress and do something with my life - something relevant and special and awesome! Thank you so so much Somber for writing this epic masterpiece. I hope to one day own it as a print version to have to sit in a place of honor next to Fallout Equestria, Heroes, and Murky Number 7. I'll need a break from Fallout Equestria before I even try to attempt reading Somber's sequel, Homelands, but I really can't wait to see what happens in the new story.

There is nothing I can possibly say to give this amazing book justice. But I can try. Want something thats more brutal than fallout but has the added interests of magic, dragons, and other mythical beings? Even living Gods, that meet some interesting ends. Somber does a wonderful job of building onto KKat's work of the Overly happy, and garishly colorful world of MLP turning into a world of bloodshed and grimy acts. Somehow they managed to make that decent make sense. And to add to that they make very real characters, that deal with very real issues. Drug addiction, depression, failure, loss, and broken friends. Just read it, that's all I can say.

This book was so enjoyable that I read it again this year. And this time it was easily 400% more entertaining. Also read Pink Eyes and the original Fallout Equestria again this year. And again they were so much more entertaining the second time around.
