Jacob Iverson has plans. Distant plans, but they exist. Find the right woman, eventually settle down and do the whole “white picket fence” routine. But until eventually comes, he’s having fun with right now. Then he meets Flora, who blows him back a step. Suddenly his distant plans are rushing up to meet him…only not quite the way he imagined.
Abandoned at seventeen, Flora Simms has made her way through the world, found life and family in the form of two best friends. Everything is just the way she likes it. From life to love to relationships, she knows what she wants, how she wants it, and doesn’t care if anyone agrees or not. And what she doesn’t want is someone trying to tie her down with long-term plans. But Jacob Iverson seems to love the future, somehow knows what she needs, and he’s hitting all the right spots. But can Flora give up her idea of what independence means to let him in?
Keri Ford brings sexy contemporary romance to the American South. With a sprinkling of men in suits and women in high heels, you’ll most likely find four-wheeler riding, ball cap wearing fellas trying to sweet-talk sundress wearing ladies in Keri’s books. Glass of sweet tea at your elbow while you read is not required, but strongly recommended.
What more can I say about Keri Ford and her fantastic writing that hasn’t already been said? Once again Keri has pulled me head first back into the world she has spun over several books and made me care. Made me feel like a resident of Apple Trail and a friend to the residents. Made me want a man and want to befriend a woman. Keri Ford has an incredible talent and I urge contemporary romance lovers to give her work a try, come on the journey with everyone who has already picked up her books and loved them.
Rough Play brings us back to the Iverson triplets in this second book of a planned trilogy. Jacob Iverson knows he wants to settle down and have a family at some point. Right now he just wants to finish the job his little brother has started in restoring the family mansion and drilling on the property. Afterwards, when things get back to normal, he can think about his future. He’s tough, he loves his family and he is smoking hot….uh Nikki like. Nikki like A LOT.
Enter Flora who has no plans of settling down. She thrives on her independence and refuses to give up any of that hard earned control for anyone. She only wants a good time and she knows she can get it with the Iverson triplet who has turned her head. Working as the plumbing contractor on the mansion restoration project gives her plenty of opportunity to oogle Jacob but when things turn serious between them it becomes stifling for her to be around him. Flora only knows how to take care of herself. She simply can’t compute letting anyone fully into her life for fear that they will leave like her wayward mother did. While I thought that sometimes her emotions were scattered and hard to follow, Flora was endearing in her floundering to understand the emotions slowly churning inside her.
What I loved most about Rough Play was how real it felt to me. I’ve said that before because Ford writes everything from the heart and that translates to pulling the reader in. The conversation just flows effortlessly between characters and the addition of humor in the personalities of the characters felt spot on. I find myself constantly chuckling when Jacob and Flora found themselves in over their heads and their reactions to those situations.
I found Rough Play to be a great read! Full of heart and emotion and of course including a very sexy hardworking man! This would be a great pool side or beach read and it’s short enough that you are able to read it in one sitting. Or maybe that’s because I couldn’t put it down once I started it. I want more from this world and am incredibly excited that there is still one more book to go in the series!
I’ve been waiting what seemed like forever for the latest book in Keri Ford’s Roughnecks series to come out. I sound like a whiney little kid, don’t I? I just can’t help it when it’s a book by an author whose work I enjoy and its part of a series, it always seems like its years rather than months before the next release. While it’s been tough, I can honestly say it was worth the wait because Rough Play is an absolutely wonderful story.
While this is the second book in this series, you can easily read it as a stand-alone title. What I find interesting is that this book runs simultaneously with the first book, Rough Ride. This is one of several series out there that I’ve read recently like this and it amazes me how the author or authors can keep things straight! I really have to admire them for that feat!
Jacob Iverson is the “middle Iverson triple”. He’s in Apple Trail helping to restore the family’s estate. He has a laid back attitude and seems to just take life as it comes. Deep down he knows he wants a wife, white picket fence and family but those are distant plans. For now, he plans to find someone to just have some fun with. Flora Simms is so awesome; I love tough, strong female characters and that describes Flora inside and out. She was abandoned at seventeen but has managed to make a life for herself in Apple Trail as a plumber. While she has no family, she has two of the best friends in the world in Gretchen and Tonya. While we see Jacob and Flora interact a little in book one, those scenes are mild to the ones in this book. I absolutely love how Jacob calls Flora, “diner chick” since he’s always run into her at her friend Tonya’s diner. Flora in turn calls Jacob, “middle Iverson twin”. These pet names just crack me up and when you add them to the hot looks and “accidental” touches, you have some of the best written foreplay ever. When Jacob asks Flora out she declines which of course doesn’t set well with him. So he devises a plan to get her to his place which works and then they decide that a “sex only” relationship will work nicely for them both.
As you can imagine Flora has some real messed up attitudes about men, relationships, and her freedom. Jacob has got to be one of the most patient men on the face of the planet. He’s very good about giving her space and not pushing. During their time together they start sharing a lot about their backgrounds (just sex, right….yeah okay). It’s interesting that they both are ashamed of things from their past, and both have worked hard to move past it all.
While I enjoy their time together, (and before I forget they have some really, really hot smokin’ up against the wall, in the pool, in the bed, and heck just about any surface you can find sex), I also enjoyed their relationships with the other characters. Flora, Gretchen and Tonya have some wonderful and amusing discussions. Flora’s friends really take the “tough love” approach with her because she’s just so stubborn and refuses to believe she can have anyone good in her life.
Jacob’s talks with his brothers lead to some interesting topics and sharing of feelings something none of them are good about. It’s also easy to see the three distinct personalities of these men from their discussions.
Rough Play is an outstanding addition to the Roughnecks Series. Once again Keri Ford has written an utterly charming story filled with rich characters, witty dialog, and love scenes that are guaranteed to melt your panties. I love Keri’s writing style, she immediately immerses you in the story and the words just wash over you like water, so smooth and soothing. I’m so looking forward to the next book in this series, but I’m also hoping Keri will eventually do an Apple Trail reunion book of some sort so we can catch up on the lives of everyone in this fun and funky little town!!
Jacob Iverson is in the small town of Apple Trail, Arkansas to help his brothers with rebuilding a house. It is here that he meets the gorgeous Flora. When he first realizes this pretty lady is a plumber, he is taken back. But Flora halts his sexist thinking right then and there. Yes she is a plumber and proud of it. She also works part time at the local diner. Having a very hard childhood, she has been on her own for many years. She likes it this way, never wanting to get too attached to anyone. Although she has found a warm friendship with some other women in Apple Trail, she keeps men at a distance. It’s obvious to both Jacob and Flora that there is a great deal of chemistry between them and they both want to explore it. But Flora makes sure to tell Jacob it will only be sex. Nothing to do with feelings, and emotions. Jacob has other plans though.
I’ve enjoy Keri Ford’s voice. She writes fun, very sexy small town contemporaries. I think Rough Play though is my least favorite of her books. There just isn’t any meat to this story. It’s all sex – which Keri Ford writes well, but I got bored. This story takes place at the same time as book one. So as you read book one, you know Flora and Jacob have something going on. But when you read this one, you discover they do, but there isn’t any depth to it. Flora only wants sex, no strings. Yet when they do have sex, of course strings pop up and she ends up pushing him away. It’s very predictable and as I said, nothing really happens besides sex and then Jacob convincing Flora she is worth a relationship.
This is a short review but there isn’t much else to say. It’s a sexy book, but I wish there was more to it.
Jacob is the middle triplet. He's moved to town to help his youngest brother, Grant, renovate the home they inherited when their mother passed away a few years back. Meanwhile, he's living in Gretchen's trailer park.
Flora is best friends with Gretchen from book 1 & Tonya (Diner owner). She is a self-taught & certified plumber. She handles Gretchen's trailer park & was hired by Grant to update the manor.
Jacob is rather likable, as is Flora. Flora found herself in a pretty crappy situation at home from age 16 to 17, when her mother finally kicked her out of the house with nothing more than keys to her dad's old truck and a couple of $20s. This seems to be a festering sore in her psyche as she feels that she cannot trust or depend on anyone ever again.
This story's timeline somewhat overlaps the first book & certain events are repeated, only from a different POV.
It's a short story. Longer than many novellas, but too short to consider a full-length novel.
My biggest sore spot was the Memorial Day BBQ. Flora was shocked to see Jacob & Tonya's response was basically "where else would he be? why would he stay home alone?". Since there was no mention to Grant, Rebecca and baby Grace being invited to the cookout (which was NOT cool in the least), I'd assume at least ONE of the triplets would have offered to spend the holiday with their baby brother or drag him with. Afterall, it was Grant's renovation project that brought all four boys back together again AND Rebecca is friends with Gretchen, Flora and Tonya.
I read the first book and couldn’t wait for this one. I wasn’t disappointed. Hot as hell sex, a stubborn and sassy heroine and one steamy hot male. Yummilicious! Flora is fighting abandonment issues, stemming from her childhood. Jacob is a commitment-phobe. Jacob overcomes his problems to realize that Flora might never overcome hers. I love the conflict and extreme sexual tension with these two. They burn the sheets up! I can’t wait to read the next story. I want to see how Tonya and Trent get together. Can’t wait til November!
It had been a while since I read the first book and it took me about 20 pages to realize this book is happening simultaneously with the other book. I really liked that. I loved Flora and Jacob. They were funny, playful, serious, a little misguided. Another great story by Keri Ford. She is becoming a favorite author and Apple Trail is becoming a place I wish I lived.
Good read. Keri Ford's writing is so refreshing..... just when you think you have read something hot, serious or meaningful you burst out laughing!! These brothers are mighty hot! I liked Flora, but my goodness she was hard-headed!!
