He can be a slave to his past…or allow her love to free him.

There’s such a thing as too much change. Emma’s sister is mated. Revolution is brewing in her home realm. The last straw: her would-be mate is back from the dead and back under her skin—yet when it comes to the last five years, he’s not talking.

Desperate for a chance to start her own life, she answers the queen’s call to ensure equality for all of Askara’s newly freed slaves. It’s the perfect opportunity to escape a heartbreak in the making named Harper.

Harper loses a piece of his fractured soul when Emma walks away. His lies were meant to protect her from torturous years that drove him to the point of madness. Instead, when he comes to her a year later to help avert a crisis in a freed-slave community, the wedge those lies drove between them is firmly in place.

As their new lives collide with old wounds, they race to stop a threat that could not only destroy the queen, but send Harper back to the hell he escaped. Emma must decide if the man she still loves deserves equal rights to her heart.

Warning: This title contains torn pants, ripped gowns, and sand in uncomfortable places. It also includes one overcompensating villain, one gnarly priest, and two battered hearts willing to give this thing called love one last chance.

Hailey Edwards writes about questionable applications of otherwise perfectly good magic, the transformative power of love, the family you choose for yourself, and blowing stuff up. Not necessarily all at once. That could get messy.

Fabulous read! Daughter of Askara is a wonderful world to read about with an incredible set of characters. I enjoyed Evermine, which is the second book in the series. Emma & Harper's journey was an interesting one. They are very likable couple but, I found myself frustrated with them. They are a couple with personal issues and relationship issues and both have a stubbornness that will make you want to tear your hair out. Ms. Edwards winged-creatures are dominating, sexy and just plain fun to read about. This series is a must read in my book.

Want to read a tale spun of another realm where demons rule and where there are slaves. A world where magic and glamour are common, where the demons are gorgeous hunks who have secrets and desires that have to be discovered, where they will protect their mates to the death, and yet where there is also great inequality, death and despair? If the answer is a resounding yes, then you will love Evermine by Hailey Edwards.
Evermine is book two of the Daughters of Askara series by Hailey Edwards. This is not a book that I would say could be a standalone – you get a much better idea of the breadth of the story, the world it is developed around and the characters and why they react as they do if you read book one in the series, which is called Everlong. It is also difficult to write about the second book without referring to the events in the first as they are so connected and intertwined with events in the second book.
Everlong was about Maddie, who was the second in line for the throne on Askara, but at her ascendancy ceremony things don’t go the way her mother or the evil step father planned. Maddie and Emma are spirited off to earth by Harper, away from Askara. There they are safe, but the ramifications of what Harper Delaney did, will cause ripple effects for a long time to come. In the second story, Evermine, the evil queen/Maddie’s mother has been deposed and Maddie’s sister who she never really knew rules in her place and the slaves have been freed.
In Evermine, the focus is on Emma – once a slave on Askara and Harper Delaney her would-be mate. Emma loved Harper with all her heart, yet because they were both slaves, and because she thought her sister – second in line to the throne loved Harper, Emma never voiced her love and then one day it was too late – Harper was gone. Her sister was in mourning and Emma couldn’t let herself mourn because she had to be strong for her Maddie. She never revealed what Harper meant to her and Emma protected Maddie.
Harper didn’t have to be a slave, but he remained with Maddie and Emma and tried his best to protect them. What he did for them was definitely above and beyond the call of duty and yet it is duty that causes him to be lost to both Maddie and Emma.
When he returns Harper is a changed demon and Emma is also changed. She really thought he was dead to her and she mourned silently, all the while supporting her sister. She also had relationships with other men, trying to fill the hole left by Harper’s death. She wasn’t proud of what she did while she thought Harper was gone and when he returns, she finds it hard to forgive him or herself. Harper was tortured while he was held captive and he hides this from Emma- he doesn’t want to talk about the five years that he spent in the gilded cage and Emma cannot cope with his reluctance to talk to her – they skirt around their issues with each other time and time again, until it might be too late.
Emma and Harper are meant to be together, and it seems that they are always at cross purposes –in fact they should be together, but in the demon tradition, it is the female who claims the male and both Maddie and Emma really have no idea of how to go about doing this. Emma told Harper later; she thought there would be some ceremony – after all there were ceremonies for everything else, but it turns out it was much simpler than that.
Harper and Emma separate – she goes back to Askara to work and help the freed slaves and Harper, well he goes off to the mines where there is also a colony of freed slaves. There he is without Emma. When there is a threat to the colony, Harper and Emma must work together to work out what is going on and who might be behind it all. To top it all off, the queen has disappeared and it might be that Harper will be returned to prison and Emma might become the enthralled victim of a rogue demon. Can Emma save Harper? Will Harper be able to save Emma and will they be able to work together to find the missing queen?
I loved reading about these demons and what they could do – they are strong, devoted and definitely not to be trifled with – and their wings, beautiful. Their customs and way of life were intriguing to read about and there were different kinds of demon tribes with different abilities which added to the complexity. I really felt for Harper and all he went through, but at the same time I could have gladly knocked both Emma and Harpers heads together – they wasted so much time! Emma was strong, but she was also weak when it came to talking about things and addressing things head on – both she and Harper tended to avoid things rather than deal with them – and look where that got them!
This is a story of a deep love that could not be revealed and of a bond that did not break despite the distance or the circumstances. It is also the story of growth and how one demon finds his love and his sanity in the arms of his mate, and how one demoness finds serenity and forgiveness in the arms of her mate. Add to this the tale of a missing queen, court intrigue, glamour and magic being used and you have a great story of a love that withstood the test of time and everything else that was thrown at it. It is a romance, but if you are looking for mating demons on every page, then you will be mistaken. That is only one small part of this tale. There is so much more to this tale and I would definitely advise that you read book one in the series before book two. I cannot wait to see how this series develops and I look forward to reading more about the Askari demons and their lives and loves! Fantastic series Ms. Edwards! Keep them coming!

I really like this world and enjoyed the political intrigues in this book, but both the MCs frustrated me. I wish they'd talked to each other more and spent less time refusing to acknowledge the other's issues.

I enjoyed the world and overarching storyline enough to binge all three books, but this wasn't my favorite series from Edwards.

This was ok. I really enjoyed book one I like the demons in this series. I just don’t know what it was about this one I just got a little bored. Im not a huge fan of Emma her character just gets on my nerves a bit! I like where the story is going so it’s a 3 star for me.

The ending in this series are what get me. I mean they’re good but they always feel like something else is missing. Not much but just a little

I will preface my review by stating, in all caps, if you haven't read Everlong, READ IT NOW! (Before you read this book). Not only is it a fantastic read, Evermine's society/structure/the demon races/etc will make a whole lot more sense. ^_^ I was also pleased that we had a bit more character and environment description in this book versus Everlong. Yay!

However, I was a tiny bit disappointed in a few of the things that happened to some of the main characters in Everlong (ie, the Harper & Maddie drama), but while I was disappointed, this book helped me to understand that things truly did end up the way they should have. Evermine picks up with immediate action, sending Harper, and Emma, back to Askara for new positions in a new government system established by Madalyn's sister who has ascended the throne. The new system works to maintain equality among the various demon races of Askara and abolishes slavery, which does not go over well for some of the uppercrust in Askaran Demonic Society.

While in the midst of spies, intrigue, and slave drama, Harper and Emma have listened to their calls to duty and honor over their hearts desires for all of their lives, and in Evermine they are forced to deal with their commitment issues to each other, resulting in, of course, lots of pent up demon sex!

Altogether, this is not a run of the mill paranormal romance. The mystery, the plotss and subplots are intricately woven into the romantic world between the demon couples- the entire series is thus far amazing and keeps page after page flipping by. Please keep them coming, Ms. Edwards, and I cannot wait to see what lies in store for the Askaran Demons in Eversworn! ^_^

Who doesn’t love a tortured hero? I know a lot of us here at GT do, myself included. While the overall feeling from the book is what you expect from Hailey Edwards, but the experience itself is a little darker than her others, and it’s because Harper and Emma have both been through so much and are forced to face and really deal with it. In Everlong, Maddie and Clayton were sweet and cute together, whereas Emma and Harper only have moments like that but simply have a rougher edge. The bottom line is that they’ve always been the rocks for their families, had to make the difficult decisions, and had to endure a lifetime of even harder consequences due to those choices.

The writing style is a little different than I remember from her other works, mostly just from the POV aspect. We only ever see from Emma or Harper’s points of view, but it’s written in first person when in Emma’s head and third person when in Harper’s. This isn’t a bad thing, just a little weird as I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. I think it’s neat though as it definitely set the characters apart.

Possibly the coolest thing about Evermine is that it takes us back to Askara. There’s a new queen, and this allows Emma and Harper to return to their home world in new capacities as the way of life has undergone a revolution. It’ll take time, but both are anxious to play their parts to make it happen. This allows us readers to see more of the realm that our characters were raised in, including the magical elements which play a large part in their escapades through various places within Askara this time around, reminding us that Hailey excels in delivering an exciting fantasy with surprisingly relatable characters (at least emotionally, as I doubt any of you are princesses and I hope none of you have been slaves!).

The world that Ms. Edwards built for this series is complex and interesting. There’s overthrowing of the queen, civil unrest and raiders. There are bad guys who can control your mind and sexy males to protect your honor. I’m looking forward to exploring more of Askara.

I have to say that I had a hard time getting into this book at the beginning. If you haven’t read the first book, or in my case it’s been a while since you read it, it’s hard to understand what’s going on. There should have been more back story to introduce the reader to the characters especially Emma and Harper.

I found it interesting how the author moved from the first person prospective of Emma to the third person prospective of Harper. It flowed well and I never got confused as to who was talking or thinking.

I enjoyed Emma. She’s a straight forward woman who doesn’t pull punches. She didn’t let her feelings for Harper undermine her need for him to be honest with her about his past. Speaking of Harpers past, I wish the author would have delved more into what happened to him. I didn’t feel as sympathetic to him as I could have if his story had been more fleshed out.

The sexual tension between Emma and Harper was hot and the scene in the bathroom is one I will not soon forget….HOT. I really liked the ending of the story. It tied everything up with a happy ending just the way I like them.

On a side note: I hope Ms. Edwards is planning to write a story about Dillon because he intrigues me.

This is the second book to the Daughters of Askara series and about Emma and Harper. Both have troubled pasts and wanted a new future. They deny their feelings but later sucumbed on what their heart wants. Anyway, I'm kinda left out of the story because it ended for me without any actions or revenge to the villain. The court's intrigue and betrayal is really aggravating. I wish there is some kind of justice for the victims in the third book.

Excellent

A gripping, well written tale set in a very believable alternate world. Everything is fleshed out and the characters are unique. I'm on to the next book in this series! Hailey Edwards has hastily made her way into my short list of favorite authors!
