He’s a tattooed, blue-eyed jerk who has no business being a single dad. He’s also my next-door neighbor, and after negotiations, my grumpy employer for the summer.
I don’t put up with cocky males normally and I certainly won’t put up with that man making noise at all hours of the day and night while he builds his glamp-ground. I offer advice, but the stubborn fool just turns his tractor on to drown me out. He returns the favor by pushing my buttons and making me so angry I can’t see straight. And I really want to be able to see his gorgeous body in those well-worn jeans and backward hat.
Amidst the verbal warfare, I discover he’s hiding scars from a recent accident. I also find out his light eyes heat up to a smoldering icy gray when I give as good as I get. Makes me want to see just how far I can push him and what he’ll do when he boils over.
Gannon’s been dealt a rough hand in life, and when I find a way under that gruff—and stupidly handsome—exterior, I find that maybe he’s not Grumpy the Bear as I nicknamed him, but instead just a teddy bear.
Grumpy the Bear is a steamy romantic comedy between the world’s grumpiest single dad and his new next door neighbor, complete with a five-year-old princess, a glamp-ground in the making, a gaggle of friends who hold no prisoners, and all the sizzling banter to keep you up all night. This romance ends with a spicy hot and perfectly sweet happily ever after (and zero breakups…according to the hero.)

Grumpy the Bear is a sweet, fun, sexy, grumpy/sunshine romance by Marika Ray. This is my first book by Marika! This story takes place in the small town of Blueball, California!!
Gannon Hart is thirty six years old and is the single father of an adorable little five year old, Elise. Gannon is an ex-firefighter who is trying to start a new life for he and his daughter. He is setting up a glamping business called Glamper’s Paradise. Gannon has definitely had a rough time of it. He is grumpy and brusque but when he looks at his daughter, he’s as soft as a marshmallow. I loved when they played dolls together. The only thing I wished for was more of the history of how Elise came into his life. I kept waiting for more of that but it never happened.
Paisley Pearse is twenty six years old and is strong and independent. Much to the displeasure of her parents. She is out of work for a few weeks with an injured ankle and is floundering a bit trying to figure out what to do with herself. But then she spies her brand new sexy neighbor and her time off looks a lot more interesting.
We’ll just say that these two together are like oil and water. They have chemistry like crazy but they also irritate each other and enjoy pushing each other’s buttons.
Watching these two fall was so much fun. Add in an adorable little girl and you’re heart is a goner. These two may drive each other crazy but they also found something in each other they craved, acceptance, respect, support, admiration, and eventually, something neither was looking for, love.
This was such a sweet book, with little to no angst. It was exactly what I needed. I will definitely be looking at more books by this author in the future.
Where has Gannon “Grumpy Bear” Hart been all my life?? Holy hot neighbor, this man is everything.
So grumpy and bossy and growly, yet caring and loving and sexy AF. And when he goes all-in to play dolls with his daughter and changes his voice to falsetto? OH MY LORT. Be still my heart and vagina.
This book right here is what Marika does best. RomCom with SO MUCH heart. Small town shenanigans with lovable characters. A series beginner that makes you want more, need more, crave the next book.
I always love reading the first book in a series that Marika writes. I look forward to the introduction of all the characters - it’s so much fun to get to know them. It didn’t take long for me to fall for all of them in this story - the main ones, the side ones, and of course, the quirky ones. And I can’t wait to see them again in the next books.
This light-hearted story is so cute and fun and sexy and gave me all the warm fuzzies…so many times. Pretty sure I had a smile on my face from beginning to end.
Dirty talkin’ deliciousness had my things full of zings. Gannon sure knows how to make a girl swoon. And tingle. And blush.
The witty and snarky banter throughout this story was the best. These two neighbors started off on the wrong foot, but they were attracted to each other…very much so. Sexual tension between Paisley and Gannon was so thick I could cut it with a knife. They tried to fight their attraction, but eventually they gave in.
I loved everything about this book. The teasing, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The texts - I. lived. for. them. And then there’s Miss Elise…oh. my. goodness. I so want her to be real so I can give her a big squeeze! She is the sweetest. I want to be her stepmom, I want to have water balloon fights with her, and I want to hear her giggles. And the way she said Paisley’s name was enough to melt my heart.
I couldn’t get enough of this well-written RomCom that’s full of small town goodness, lovable characters, and so many feel-good moments that squeezed my heart. I was l smiling, swooning, and swirling with so much happiness while reading this story.
That epilogue…oh my…all the happy tears!! Why can’t a grumpy bear like Gannon move in next to ME?
Love a good enemies-to-lovers RomCom? Read this one!!
Paisley is one tough woman. She has to be in a job that is usually considered to be for males. And her parents remind her of it every chance they get. But she’s great as a line worker, until the day she slips off the pole and sprains her ankle bad enough for a boot and 4 weeks forced leave. Instead of being concerned or supportive, her parents consider it a sign that it’s time for her to get a “real” job. Or better yet, a husband. Gannon has had a rough six months. He’s been a firefighter for forever but after his leg was burned he had to retire. Then a former one night stand handed over a five year old daughter he didn’t know existed and walked away. Needing to make a living, he moves them to Blueball (yes that’s the name of the town) where he buys land to build a “glamp ground”… right next door to Paisley. Gannon’s grumpiness stems from a need to keep everyone safe, and Paisley’s pissed off from constantly having to prove herself. Can two broken halves make each other whole? I enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to everyone. Also, make sure to get the bonus epilogue.
No grown-ass man is gonna say glamp-ground as much as this dude does 🤢 Also, I get so annoyed with romances when they have one fight and then one of them refuses to talk about it and just calls it quits. Grow up! Guess that's why dudes shouldn't date women ten years younger than them 🤷♀️
#AgeGap #SmallTown #GrumpySunshine #HealingLove #SingleDad #ARC 4.5 STARS Book one in the new series can be read as a standalone and ends with a HEA. It is written in first person from an alternating dual POV. Gannon is a hero who is crusty on the outside and squishy on the inside. The way he is with his daughter, Elise, is absolutely heart melting and ovary popping. I appreciate his uncertainty after an accident as a firefighter has left him with scars inside and out. He is aware that the future can change on a dime. He becomes obsessively protective because of that, and I believe that is a normal reaction. Paisley is fierce. I love that she is a woman who is a force of nature in a job traditionally held by men. I love that she has fought for respect in her position and wins it. She is tough, even in the face of her parental baggage. I also love that she owns her sexuality and goes for it with her hot new neighbor. These two have fiery banter that is well written and fun to read. When they move beyond banter to the physical the sparks fly hot and electric. I love that they both develop feelings for each other while still attempting to deny them until they just can’t deny it anymore. Paisley falls for Elise fast and I love her relationship with the little girl. Each MC has some baggage to overcome. I love that the feelings for each other, and the support they offer each other, drives each of them to get to a place of better individual health before they move forward in their relationship. Their HEA is fun and sweet, and this was an easy read that I enjoyed. I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book.
"That support I was thinking I didn't need from her? I was a liar. I needed it more than I needed air."
There is a reason Marika Ray is my favorite RomCom author....she can do no wrong. The woman is a mastermind when it comes to weaving a love story with humor that will have you chuckling out loud...repeatedly. The first book in her new series is no exception.
Gannon Hart is a new single father who decides to open up a glamping campground in Blueball. Still trying to adjust to parenthood and not being able to continue being a firefighter the change of scenery is just what they needed. What he wasn't anticipating was the little blonde ball of fire that is his new neighbor.
Paisley Pearse is a determined woman trying to make a name for herself in her field of work....which is a man's world. Hard for her to do now that she is off work due to a work injury. She definitely has no idea her life is about to change when she answers the door and comes face to face with her new neighbor. Of course at this moment is a classic Marika meet-cute that I will not be spoiling!
Gannon, Paisley, and little Elise are so dang adorable. To watch Gannon go from grumpy to absolutely smitten for Paisley...absolute swoon fest. Paisley is one feisty female who doesn't think twice about putting Gannon in his place. It is only natural that their paths collided in the hottest of ways possible. Then as their relationship grows into love it is impossible to not pull for this adorable little family.
Ms. Ray introduces us to the new group of characters this series will be about and we see characters from series past which is always fun. She gave enough little snippets in this story to have me excited for the next book too!
There is nothing more fun than a book that begins with a grumpy snarky single dad meeting his match with a fiercely independent woman that is showing the world that a woman can stand on her own in a ‘man’s’ world as they both try to deal with the hand that life has dealt them. Both Paisley and Gannon are trying to make the best of a twist of Fate that lands this pair as next door neighbors. However, what both initially believe to be pure hatred towards each other quickly turns and they both see that their immediate and electric connection is based on something more… something deeper… and something that neither is looking for at this moment in their lives. However, as the reader you will delight in watching as this change happens through the sparks and undercurrents of their dialogue and pranks that always move the story forward in ways that will make you both shake your head and giggle. Then add to this combination the extra push of one adorable little girl who has her own mind and an adorable pooch that has an agenda, and you’ll find yourself reading a winning Romantic Comedy combination that is sure to bring a smile to your face and a lot of good laughs.
Grumpy The Bear is a great summer read and that proves the power of Fate to move us in the most unexpected ways and show us that what we wanted all along was not really what we needed. A light, fun, and flirty read that has just enough spice to be read in public but leaves you with a delightfully devilish smile and a sigh.
I can’t wait to see what comes next from Marika, because I’m putting her on Autobuy!
Thank you to Enticing Journey Book Promotions and Marika Ray for the copy I read!
This book is supposed to be about a grumpy neighbor, except he never really seems that grumpy. There's a misunderstanding between him and his new neighbor and she starts calling him names like a pervert. Then they just antagonize each other in a way that is way too immature for a 26 year old woman and 36 year old man. They finally go on a date and discuss being neighbors with benefits and agree to "scratch the itch" but he quickly amends to say no sex. I don't know how he thinks that's going to work and just gave up at that point.
Also, there is frequent communication via text. It starts off with the right format (i.e. the POV text is on the right) but then switches after the first or second text communication.
2.5 stars. The spice was good. It just felt rushed in places but also stagnant in others. There wasn’t a moment when things seemed to start to shift between Gannon and paisley, it just happened. It’s just fell a little flat overall.
Firefighter Gannon Hart's life changed forever when he learned that he had a 5-year-old daughter, Elise, shortly after being seriously injured on the job. He decides to accept a disability payout and moves his daughter to the small town of Blueball, California to start a glamping resort. It's impossible to get any work done with Elise and her mischievous puppy underfoot, so if he wants to get the business up and running anytime soon, he'll need help. It comes from an unexpected source: his new neighbor, line worker Paisley Pearse, who feels compelled to step in after noticing Gannon's "creative" childcare strategies. It's a battle of wills between grumpy Gannon and feisty Paisley from the moment they meet, but their bickering is paired with an intense attraction they each find difficult to ignore. He's convinced that their 10-year age gap makes her off limits, however. How far will Paisley go to change Gannon's mind?
I adored the sparkling banter and fiery chemistry between Paisley and Gannon, as well as how protective he was of both her and his daughter. I wanted to cheer when he stood up to her parents and told them off for criticizing her career and life choices! When she turned around and did the same thing for him with his dad, I think I fell in love with Paisley right along with Gannon. They couldn't have been more perfect for each other if they tried, and I loved the little family they created with Elise and her puppy Meatball.
The one thing I was missing from this story was an explanation of what exactly happened with Elise's mother. How did Elise end up with Gannon? Does her mom have any contact with her now? It seemed kind of strange to me that Elise never asked about or mentioned her mom, and that she was so comfortable with Gannon after only knowing him for a few months.
Despite that (tiny) frustration, I highly recommend "Grumpy the Bear" for all steamy rom-com fans and look forward to the next book in the series.

"Historically, I’d only been attracted to good guys. The kind that didn’t steal my underwear or admit they weren’t gentlemen, but Gannon was testing my own theories on attraction. He was also testing my theory about never letting a man best me. I threw on a T-shirt and slid myself into my shortest pair of jean shorts. Mr. I’m Not a Gentleman was going to get an eyeful today. Two could play this game." - Paisley
Bored, but resigned, Paisley has decided to just take it easy while on medical leave from her physically demanding job. Too bad Fate has other plans for her...
"Paisley’s mouth opened on a gasp and I took full advantage, my tongue sweeping in to taste her. To silence her. It felt like heaven pressing her up against my body and controlling this kiss. She tasted like I knew she would, hot, spicy, and something uniquely happy that could only be her. Her hands gripped my forearms, like she didn’t know if she wanted to push me away or hold me to her. I was out of my mind already, and getting my hands and mouth on her only made things flame further out of control." - Gannon
Gannon finds himself at an impasse; loss of the only career he had ever wanted and a five year old daughter he didn't know existed suddenly thrust into his life... Determined to build a new life with his young daughter, Gannon starts on his business plan... And then there was the next door neighbor, Paisley... Way too young for a man headed towards forty... Or was she?
Hang on to your hats, this is gonna be one wild ride! A rom-com like no other, giggles and gasps abound! Steamy and fun, you won't be able to put it down!
Only negative I could find was not getting the whole story how he ended up with his daughter. Not much detail, just she arrived and that was it. He had no clue he was a father until a woman turns up and drops her off.
Marika Ray is a genius at creating characters who make us laugh out loud while reading which is the perfect way to spend the day! I immediately fell in love with Gannon and his adorable daughter, Elise, and their cute puppy, Meatball. Gannon is a devoted father who carries extra dolls in his pocket in case Elise needs a distraction. How cute is that? Opening his new business, Glamper’s Paradise, is a lot of work but he was determined to be successful. He had the money, the plans and the desire to make his dream come true. Gannon never thought he needed a partner to share his life with until he met his beautiful neighbor, Paisley. They had an immediate connection, but did he really have time to romance Paisley while building his business, taking care of Elise, and training Meatball to be a better puppy? Ms. Ray has hit the jackpot with “Grumpy the Bear”, the first book in her new series. Gannon and Paisley are both passionate individuals who quickly fell into a routine that became so much more. Their back and forth texting was hilarious, their time spent with Elise was priceless and their sexy glances and stolen kisses were just what the doctor ordered. Love, trust, and having fun were the foundation for Gannon, Paisley and Elise’s happy ending!!
So, if you're a fan of Auburn Hill ("Hell") and it's (fantastic) characters, this spin-off "new" town/story is an absolute must read. If you're starting your fangirl literary journey here, no worries!! You're in for a treat!
Gannon has had a rough half year, but moves with his daughter, Elise, to Blueball - the town next to "Hell". He didn't plan on a neighbor like Paisley and, the grump that he is, makes a mess of things.
I enjoyed that Paisley isn't a fragile woman. Her character's determination to do her best, and her openness with Elise was easy to connect with. I loved the steamy chemistry between her and Gannon.
The character cross-overs from the connected series made me smile, as I already know and love them, so seeing them here was super. Again...no worries for new readers...just go back (to Love Bank - Bain and Lucy's story) and catch up!! You'll be glad you did!!
This author consistently delivers engaging, addictive, and creative stories that I enjoy. If you haven't figured it out yet... (hahaha)... I recommend this author and this read.
This was such a cute story, and I loved this pair together with all their snark and spite feeding into the enemies-to-lovers vibe of the book. I hated the thought that we’d seen the last of Auburn Hill. But now that we get to see what life’s like over in Blueball, I may have just discovered a new favorite fictional town. (Especially since several previous favorite Auburn Hill residents drop in on Gannon and Paisley to shake them up and set them straight.) I loved how strong and fierce Paisley was, particularly in the face of all the opposition she got for her choice of careers. And I was in awe of the way Gannon learned to ask for – and accept – help. I thought this was especially important with where his brain kept taking him. However, I don't feel like Paisley was as innocent in their major conflict as she was portrayed. To me, Gannon wasn’t entirely wrong in all his accusations. In any case, I adored seeing what this little family were able to achieve and I can't wait to see what's next. I received a complimentary advance copy of this book from the author.
I am so excited for this new small town world from Marika Ray! I love all the books from the town of Auburn Hill (or Hell), so to get a series of its rival town that seems equally as odd is just perfect! And that town name 🤣
Gannon and Paisley are the epitome of grumpy/sunshine and I love them together. They are both stubborn and it’s so funny to me that there technically isn’t a third act breakup because Gannon declared they were not broken up! What made this book even more enjoyable is that Paisley has a not so typical job for a FMC and Gannon is building a glamping campground which is just living the dream IMO. Perhaps the best part though is the mental health rep from Gannon and how he isn’t ashamed to get help.
I think this is one of the authors more spicier books, and the only thing I wish for was that would’ve been more details on Gannon’s daughter’s mom (but maybe that’s just me being nosy). With some crossovers from some favorite characters from Auburn Hill, I can’t wait to see where this new series goes!
So we all know Marika Ray is the queen of romcoms, right?!
This book was EVERYTHING. Sweet, sexy, funny, cute, witty, endlessly entertaining-- and it HAD everything; including an adorable puppy, an equally adorable kid, stolen panties, quirky characters, and water balloon fights. Gannon and Paisley showcase plenty of Marika's trademark banter, and the chemistry between them is off the charts.
I loved this story from the very first sentence (which, btw, is amazing), and was happy to see some familiar faces from the Auburn Hill series while exploring the town of Blueball.
This is an absolutely perfect read (perfect for established fans of Marika Ray, perfect for readers that have just found her, and perfect for anyone that likes hunky next-door neighbors and strong female protagonists!) and I can't wait to see where this new series goes ❤️
Marika does it again - giving us the single dad with the personality of a grouch we all adore. He's multi-layered, possessive a touch, and has a love for his daughter that imbalances the ovaries. Gannon is a typical hot guy but has all these extra traits that lift him above the rest. Paisley is like a chihuahua spitting attitude while showing women and men alike how its done! They're a perfect match and reading how they start off arguing until the eventual chemistry blows up was phenomenal. Another great read by a fantastic author. I'll always one click Marika's books - she never fails to entertain and make me laugh while also blushing.
I do love a grump! This was a fun read with little angst. Gannon is an older single dad who is basically starting over after a work related injury. He’s definitely grumpy and growly which I love. Paisley is younger by almost 10yrs but works in a male dominated trade and can definitely hold her own. Sparks fly when Gannon and Paisley meet and it continues through the book. I enjoyed getting to know these characters and catching up with some characters from previous books. Looking forward to more books this small town.
I devoured this book in half a day. Even though this is a fast, easy read, the author does not leave anything out, and it flows easily. I loved the wisecrack's between these two neighbors. Meatball and Elsa were so adorable, making them a great focal point. Marika Ray succeeded in crafting an amazing small town grumpy neighbor / single father read. Marika Ray is not a new author to me, and I really like her characters and writing style. I would highly recommend reading any books written by this author.
What is it about grumpy, bossy alpha males that make me one click? Gannon is one of those guys that could rub you the wrong way, but he’s got a heart of gold. And Elise absolutely stole my heart and this story. Paisley is kick a** and I love how determined she is to excel at her career and in life. I laughed and fell in love with all these characters. I cannot wait to visit Blueball again and reconnect with some new favorites.
I was fortunate enough to get an ARC copy of this book, and it did not disappoint. It is a great compliment to all the Hell book series. I can't wait for the next one.
I normally cringe at age differences, but Marika did such a great job of tying the characters' maturity and immaturity into the story that it wasn't noticeable.
Trope - age gap, neighbours to friends to lovers, bickering, PTSD, hate to love, grumpy × sunshine, nanny romance, romcom, single dad, small town, found family, steamy, workplace, lineworker FMC, third-act break-up, HEA Bonus chapter - 1
The first half was going well and good; it had banter, attraction, care, and emotions, but the second half kind of ruined the book for me. The audiobook made the book enjoyable; however, I didn't enjoy listening to the MC's fight.
Things I liked - 1. The strip-teasing was hilarious, especially considering the situation. 2. The text exchange was so adorable and hilarious. 3. Something about an athletic and muscled FMC was so hot that I couldn't help but develop a girl crush on her. Also, Paisley working in a male-dominated field was very attractive. I liked how her challenges were thoroughly highlighted and showed the other side of the workforce. 4. Elise was cute, and she brought so much innocence to the story. 5. Gannon was a good dad; he was still learning, but he did his best. 6. The epilogue and bonus chapters were sweet and a perfect way to conclude their story. 7. The girlfriend group was healthy and supportive.
Things I didn't like - 1. The couple fighting over small things, followed by silent treatment. They both had anger issues, and neither was ready to bow until they hurt the other person, and that just didn't sit well with me. 2. The last 30% just brought the book down, like omg, communicate!! It's not a hard thing to do!! The third act breakup was so irritating; also, yeah, they reconciled but I was just not okay with how they both dug into each other's insecurities and issues - if it happened now, it will happen again in the future, and that just made me sceptical about their relationship going forward. Like, I can see these two getting divorced in the future. 3. The toxic parents, yes, they change, but their words to hurt their children won't simply go away.
Thanks to Tantor Audio for the ALC. Audiobook available now! Happy audiobook release day!
Grumpy the Bear (Blueball Band of Brothers book 1) By Marika Ray
Narrated by Marie Hawkins & TJ Clark
Story Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (0-5) Narration: 🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧 (0-5) Overall: 4.75/5 Steam: 🔥🔥🔥☄️ (0-5) I bump up for public places/outdoor spaces.
What I’m Starry-Eyed Over: 🤩 I’ve been wanting to read this series since I first saw any and all of the covers. I’m so glad they’re coming to audiobook now!! 🤩 These narrators are new to me (I think, at least less well known) and did a fantastic job of voicing emotions, especially transitioning from the fun, sultry, and seductive feels to the other feelings of being anxious, mad, sad, and regretful. 🤩 Blueball, California, “a small town on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, tucked into the pine trees like a well-kept secret.” 🤩 New neighbors: newly single dad and newly hurt line worker. 🤩 Gannon is building Glamper’s Paradise! 🤩 Paisley is on short-term disability, and becomes the perfect temporary nanny for Elise. 🤩 Fabulous and funny meet-cute that starts the enemies-to-lovers type banter and 🤩 So much physical attraction and pining. 🤩 So much summertime fun: water balloons, water hoses, and The Watermelon Crawl! 🤩 That first kiss! I love a fabulous first kiss. 🤩 Sweet, spicy, and funny—all the feels! Even a little yummy jealousy at just the right times. 🤩 I love the texting throughout. 🤩 Loving friends with helpful perspective and smart advice. I’m glad Gannon eventually considered therapy because his response at the drama/conflict is not acceptable even if understandable. 🤩 I like the tiny tease of Keva & Linc—my interest is perfectly piqued.
What I’m Wishing/Dizzy About: 💫 The setting is so great—the lake area, the trailer, the campground and campfire, Paisley’s house—I would have liked a little more description to help me visualize and feel immersed in all the places.
All the emotions, the hilarity, the swoons and the love
I loved, loved Gannon and Paisley’s enemies to lovers, single dad, nanny, next door neighbor, age gap, grumpy-sunshine romance of all the things. The witty banter and sexual tension between these two was romance perfection. All the laugh out loud hilarity upped the deliciousness. Add in two strong, determined but wounded main characters and this book is the romcom trifecta. I loved it. After suffering a career ending injury and becoming an instant dad to Elise, his 5 year old daughter, Gannon buys land in small town Blueball to make a glamping campground. Paisley is a line worker who is on temporary disability due to an ankle injury on the job. She is also Gannon’s new neighbor and eventually becomes Elise’s temporary nanny. Their meet cute involved a puppy and skimpy underwear and did not result in love at first sight but they do get there. Throughout this beautifully paced, hilarious and heartwarming story of Gannon and Paisley’s HEA, they each have to deal with their less than supportive parents, the scars of their pasts, and their fears. In between all the laughs, you’ll definitely feel all the feels. Gannon and Paisley are real, relatable people who have flaws, but are really trying to just do their best as messy human beings. The story was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and an engaging storyline as told through sweet moments, steamy scenes, laughs, supportive friends, messy families, painful pasts, mild angst and bunches of heart squeezing love. The secondary characters were well developed and I am excited to read more Blueball stories starring them.
