Sort of an origin tale for Preacher.
When his woman is killed by a man hired by a corrupt banker, Preacher goes on the vengeance trail. Along the way there is a lot of description of his past. He visits his family and encounters another corrupt banker.
It all comes to a head in Philly.

This and the one prior ("Preacher's Peace"), have great plot development. In this one it is complex, and even though the good guy usually wins in Johnstone's books, thus one does a very good job at developing an intriguing storyline that holds the reader all the way to the end. One of the best characters is a nod to the dog lover in many of us- he has a dog companion in this book and you even get to read "Dog's" thoughts! Took me back a pace....well done!

Pretty good western series. If you like Johnstone's writing you will like the series. Recommended

The short story is great , but they filled the book with mostly verbatim sections from the previous books, which makes this a hard read and worth skipping. I rated all previous books with 5 stars all around .
I am listening to this and the narrator is terrible. The previous narrator is excellent and I will be sure to follow him. As bad as I believe the narration to be it doesn’t help that the book is crap. I’m guessing , Mr. Johnstone meant this to be a short story. The editor probably added the additional 3 hours of content from the previous books.
One could say that you could probably skip all the other books and just read this one as they are in it albeit disjointed.
If this were a Free book it’s possibly still worth skipping. The ones before are pretty darn good although I had troubles with one before this. I wonder if someone else wrote this book .
Good luck , I’m not sure if I will continue reading/listening to the series it’s that bad. Which is a big disappointment if you like me love to read .

Here we learn Preacher's last name as he returns home after 15 years on his way to Philadelphia to find the killer of his girl. Preacher helps out so many people in each adventure it's hard to believe he's human. He receives pardon from his family and find justice for his girl. Read the story to find out the deals of how he accomplishes these tasks.

Nice but disappointing
Nice retrospective on Preacher's early life but the extensive reprinting from earlier work seemed a little much and disappointing- would have preferred condensed references to the past and more originality to the story being told in this book.

Poor writing and editing.
This book has a lot of errors. CARLA is referred to as Clara and also Cara. It is the same character but the author and editor didn't catch it. Also the woman Jennie was killed in St. Lewis and at one point it was said New York. Nothing else in the book even mentioned New York. There are also several places when things are being recalled that the author just used the text from the previous book word for word. I have enjoyed most of the series but those things were very distracting. I have purchased 2 more of the series so I will see if they are done better.

I enjoy Johnstone's books, especially the "Preacher" ones, and I believe that this is second or third one that I have finished. He always provides you with a group of outstanding characters, that are well developed through out the book. His chase for justice for Jenny in this volume is one that you know will be achieved, and can't wait for him to get it done. If you enjoy the western genre, you would probably enjoy the books by Johnstone.

I liked how the preacher books started out. Then, when he went back to tell Preacher’s story from the beginning, I thought it could be good. It is good, but the author is using way too many flashbacks from the previous book or the current book. That wouldn’t be so bad but it is word for word from the previous book, like he cut and paste it. I am loyal to this character and will keep reading, I just hope the flashbacks become less in future books

An entertaining read; reminiscent of listening to Grandpa's tall tales about his younger years -- one knows some details are strickly for entertainment and have no basis in reality. ;)

My first Western just to give this genre a try and it was fantastic. I was taken on a journey on boats and carriages in the woods and the city. The good guy wins! I want to read more

Preacher returns home after years in the mountains. His lady friend Jennie has been murdered. Dog, Preacher's confident and close associate killed one assailant, chewed ear off the other. These horrific action against his lady friend did not set well with our Preacher. So Preacher sets out for St. Louis to gather further information on the demise of his Jennie. He pays a visit to his parents, whom he hasn't seen in many years; there he finds out that his father is about to lose the family farm; because of a bank president who sees himself as land baron who is foreclosed on several farms..Preacher was told about the situation and decided it's the least he can do for his father is to pay the note due and his father would own the farm free and clear...remember women weren't allowed to own land in the eighteen hundreds...so if a husband died, the land would automatically go-to a male family member..( very messy)..Preacher tracks the killer to Philadelphia and finds the mastermind behind the murderers committed by Ben Caviness whom Preacher administered frontier justice ending his killing sprees...Dog is back with Preacher in their beloved high lonesome...(Rocky Mountains)

It was very nice to find out what Arthur's family name was as I have read many of these books and had always wondered if we would find out his full name, Arthur Coopersmith.

Sequel from Preacher's Peace, wrapped up unfinished business. Typos, repeated (plagiarized) text from his other books, but tied in nicely with the story to make it a standalone.
