This stylish introduction to vintage fashion showcases the key designs and styles of the main vintage eras of the 20th century. It will be an inspiration to vintage enthusiasts and general readers alike.
It's a quick but good reference point for the Fashion through the decades 20-80s. It includes photos and the most important names and influences of the decade. 3.5*
Vintage Fashion by Ottilie Godfrey is a basic overview of fashion though the 20th century. If you're a beginner, like me, it is a great starter book to learn about style from the 20's through the 80's... Did I just type "80's"? Damn! I must be vintage!... If you are a fashionista, this book isn't going to help you at all. You probability know more about fashion than what's between its covers. If you are looking for something in depth, look elsewhere. If you want to know specifically about rockabilly or plus size fashion, it's sorely lacking. I think the author forgot about us plus size girls when she wrote the book. (But don't worry, I'm sure she'll come around. We are the rage!) However, if you get your era's jumbled up, like I do, this is a good book to start with. It will straighten things out for you. It gives a good summary of the styles worn (by skinny girls), with pictures (of skinny girls), and descriptions (of skinny style). I'm sure it's not the best 'starter' book but for the price, it's... meh...
I just love clothes!!!! It's really odd to look at old fashions and try to see what they saw as beautiful in it....which can be a struggle, to be honest. There were decided underrepresentations of POC and different bodies in this, but I guess many of the eras depicted were very whitewashed....yeah.w
Interesting book when you have lived through some of the decades that are now considered Vintage! Lots of photographs of different known and unknown models wearing fashion from each decade with information on the influences for the type of clothing.
