Vennello Aadapilla revolves around a chess player and a telephonic conversation. The novel starts with a young chess player, Revanth, who went to Russia for participating in World Championships. Interestingly, Revanth won the world championship and became champion.
He got a call from an unknown girl who congratulates him. She likes him very much and follows him. During the conversation, she challenged him to identify her name and address. in return, he also started liking her and found out the first part of her name. This books contains several puzzles and riddles that the reader can solve to keep himself/herself engaged.
This books also explains the hard work, dedication and determination shown by the chess player, which encourages young readers in achieving their goals. There are other characters in this book such as James and Sulochana, which gives a good storyline, theme and strength to this novel.
Seeing that nobody has written a review to this amazing novel, here goes: (Spoiler alert: some parts of the plot are revealed)
This novel is set in the pre-mobile era. Originally written in Telugu by Yendamoori Veerendranath and translated to Kannada by Vamshi, this novel narrates the romantic story of the protagonist, who is a chess Grandmaster and an ace logician. When he is lamenting that there is no support to any other sport apart from cricket in India (which is true to this day also) after he gets a lukewarm welcome while returning victorious from an International chess tournament, he receives a phone call from a fan. His life would be never the same after that.
Beladingala Baale (I won't reveal her name here) enters Revanth's life like a breeze, brings in a major paradigm shift in every aspect of his life, also being the reason behind his only and best buddy James giving up his pessimistic thoughts in life.
Revanth wants to meet her, but she challenges him to uncover her identity by cracking riddles. The result: an array of comical wild goose chases, one of them turning horribly wrong, but ending on a romantic note. The romantic mood takes off after this incident. Throughout the novel, we see Revanth struggling to meet his lady love and profess his love for her, also trying to outwit her, almost always ending up in some misadventure or comical situation. My personal favourite is "Moogu.... Moogu...." By the end of the novel, there is a healthy mixture of romantic mood with comedy and suspense, only to end in the classical Yendamoori Veerendranath way: with a twist.
An amazing novel. Highly recommended: totally unputdownable (I finished it in one single day).
As an apt act of recognition of the amazingness of this novel, it has been picturized by ace director Sunil Kumar Desai, who has remained truly faithful to the novel, deviating very little from the original, thus managing to satisfy hardcore book lovers as well. Ananth Nag has played the perfect hero, with equally brilliant acting by other actors too, including Ramesh Bhat and Lokanath; Chandrika Gururaj as the voice of Beladingala Baale has indeed done an amazing job.
PS: You won't be able to relate to this novel unless you travel back to the pre-mobile era.
190 pages of awesome romantic novel was spoiled in the last couple of pages. I mean, why do authors choose cancer as a critical character in their tales.
A great romantic tale mixed with some math and logic ended with drama. Very much disappointed with the ending. My sincere request to authors is pls don't kill off nice people... blahblahblah :P
This book is a feast for people looking for romantic, very informative and compelling story.I couldn't keep the book down until I complete it.Five stars is all I can start with. With in this book one can find references for atleast 10 good books/sources to read.Writer is trying to educate the reader by pointing us to good sources.
Its a book of lifetime. But being a happy ending lover I've removed one star. All the episodes in this book are so mature and now I can see many translations of this book in many other. Today I realised that I don't know my own language, to even write a review on this book I'm unable to locate words which i need and accepted the defeat that this generation knows english more than their own mother tongue.
This novel is a suspense thriller drama with a romantic touch. The logic behind the happenings is quite engaging and the math used is a task for the reader to comprehend and enjoy its beauty. You will definitely fall in love with this "Vennello Aadapilla"
ther's mature romance, motivation, love, philosophy and yes.. loads of knowledge. this is set in the late 80's and except technology influences a few scheme of things, the feel is always fresh. a very good read, with emotions that linger for long. very long.
Such an Awesome book. Great novel of all times. Each and every page is filled with suspense. I couldn't keep the book down until i completed the whole book. Loved the book to the core. 5 star is not enough for the Author and the book. Yandamoori Veerendranath's best novel.
The writer takes care that the suspense of the story does not fade away at any point in the book. The chase is constant, the struggle is real, the way he keeps the reader engaged is beautiful. The reader is hooked onto the book till the last page. You can't and won't expect each twist in the story. The plot isn't that thick, but the way the plot flows from one sequence to another is perfect, without any loss of quality or logic. The author plays with many concepts, like math, probability, statistics, psychology, psychoanalysis, sociology, developmental psychology, sex, marriage, Freudian psychology, geography, telephone exchanges - what shocks me the most is that the author is able to do this research in an age and time when there was no internet. It wouldn't be difficult to imagine this plot being written in this age and time i.e after 2018 a quick internet search would reveal every minute detail about how any technology or any process would work out, but he did this research in a time when none of this existed. I should appreciate the intense knowledge of the author. The research that he should have done to compile this book. The author does not stretch the book, not a line less, not a line more. The author did not drag the book long enough to cause the reader any boredom. I read this in one single stretch, but the tragic ending and vairagyam or the karmic philosophy seemed to make the entire novel or the pursuit of the protagonist irrelevant, but the way the author built up the suspense as the climax neared is perfect. He could keep you hooked onto the book for hours. I now understand why people read novels but why they can't get hooked to text books - Because text books don't have a well written climax or a flow. Making the reader want to flip the page as quick as he can and keep the pace increasing as the book flows seems to be the primary aim of the writer. The intensity is built up as the author keeps the reader guessing what comes next, killing each expectation successfully every single time and taking the plot ahead in a direction that is impossible to guess. The author has become a master at this art, to take the plot beyond the expectations of the reader. If I were to guess the plot at any point of time, the book would have become senseless, the blind fold, seven chess games was the pinnacle, the author also tried to dismantle the anti-science approach that is so common in India. I just loved the plot from beginning to the end. The way it was developed is incredible.
Quite a balanced and a refreshing one . It has that subtle romance, suspense, challenges, witty, fun and everything that can refresh your mind. It was really fun solving those little puzzles along with the protagonist. At the end it turns out to be a little touchy but, nonetheless enjoyed it thoroughly.
Very intelligently written book where the main characters are damn smart..with puzzles n riddles.. was not able to put down this book in middle.. gets emotional on the climax.
Vennello Aadapilla, is yet another interesting novel from Yandamoori Veerendranath. In this novel, he teases with the idea of Love. The primary story revolves around Revanth and an anonymous Female fan of his. The other story will come as a surprise and I don't want to spoil that for you folks.
Each individual is different and their perception of Love and human connections come with different shades. James having a troubled Childhood views women and love with a totally different lens than that of Revanth. While Revanth not having any female fans for his Chess prowess deals with and sees Love differently.
It is just been two novels by Mr. Veerendranath and I already love his writing, the way he digs deep into the psyche of a human mind, the demons in it, and the way we react to situations we are not new to. The way each processes trauma and everything. I somehow guessed how Revanth's Love story would end owing to seeing so many movies, If I had come across this book earlier my intuition might have been different.
I totally enjoyed listening to this story and loved it every bit. Hoping to listen to more of Mr. veerendranath's stories.

The writing is interesting but not captivating. There are Lot of pop culture references which need understanding of situation in '82. The book needs editing; maybe they did not edit at that time.(serial being novelised)
James is more interesting than the hero. Maybe hero is left to be assumed as us. But I assume myself as James. I am not honestly enthusiastic about these puzzle kind of love things. Blindfold chess game is very good. I am interested in hearing the opponent kind of games.
Virginity: yandamoori should be commended for discussing this in '82 Incest: the first book in Telugu in '82 to discuss this in mainstream novel.
it is great book where reader is involved much into book with the help of puzzles. where reader wil become protagonist and solves puzzles. the characterization of james and revant analysis over him is briliant. the episode where realization of james happens is also a great. some sequences like heroine collecting love letter from dust bin are creative and memorable. few lines will always touches us (one is "meeru naa kanna kuda premistunaa anna bhavanane ekkuva premistunaranukunta". and last lines about tears etc). it lags in some episodes where one cannot follow poetic wrtings otherwise it is great

This is my first Telugu novel which made me feel, how did I miss this gem?¿ And then I never looked back, my love and respect for Telugu novels began that day. Such a lovely narration, at first when I heard the title all I could imagine is a woman walking in the veranda after her dinner, who doesn't even know there's a man who fell in love with her and has been watching her every night from the corner of the street.
But the story hit different, and the climax had every emotion a human could feel.
You won't get bored at any part of this book and If you love logics and have some interest in mathematics, this book is for you. I wonder how Yandamuri Veerendranath(author) has such a great exposure to many subjects like maths, physics and what not. Some conversations in the book are awesome and I, even, highlighted them. I didn't realize till I completed the book that I read for 6 continuous hours. You will really excited to know what would happen next. I would suggest this to everyone one
Most interesting, intelligent, innovative romance novel.. The ideas in this book are soo innovative&intelligent that sometimes it feels like reading an engaging text book... P.S. I'm just giving 4 stars because i can't able to understand the poetry in between, at the same time the story and proceedings are soo fast paced and interesting that i never tried too hard to understand them........ Otherwise this novel deserves 5 stars and even more....
The subtlety of romance and satire have lost a bit due to the generation gap, but, immense and engaging. One of mom's favorite books, still holds to be a good read.
reading my first novel of my mother tongue telugu, i have regretted for not reading telugu novels for these long years, it's really superb, intelligent narration it has twists and turns you would never guess.
Exciting ride of emotions . I loved the way yandamuri sir paints the picture through his writings . I'm sure it would have definetly made into movie ,i'll be keen to watch it some day but his way of testing the lead protaganist inherently tested reader and i loved the way he did that .
A 3.5⭐️ My first telugu novel. Good one. Finished it in a day. Would have been nice if its a happie ending. Bought it in 2023 annual book fair hyd. Went with these guys in Our caf like said 3 yrs ago🤷🏻♀️
Definitely worth reading Novel.. IN spite of watching this movie, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this Novel. Though this book was published in 1980's it still has a freshness in it, that engages you in the story.
