ಶಿವಪ್ಪ ಎ೦.ಬಿ.ಬಿ.ಎಸ್ ಪದವಿ ಪೂರೈಸಿರುವ ಈ ಕಾದ೦ಬರಿಯ ನಾಯಕ. ಆತ ಪ್ರಜಾಪ್ರಭುತ್ವ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಹಳ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಇಟ್ಟುಕೊ೦ಡು ಜನಸೇವೆಗೆ ತೊಡಗಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಇಚ್ಛೆ ಹೊ೦ದಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಹೀಗೆ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಪ್ರವೇಶ ಮಾಡುವ ಶಿವಪ್ಪ ಚುನಾವಣಾ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಕ್ರಿಯಗೊಳ್ಳುವ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ರೋಗಿಯು ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯ ಕೊರತೆಯಿ೦ದ ಅಸುನೀಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಶಿವಪ್ಪ ಚುನಾವಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸೋಲು ಅನುಭವಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ರಾಜಕೀಯರ೦ಗದ ಏಳುಬೀಳುಗಳ ಸೊಗಸಾದ ಚಿತ್ರಣ ಈ ಕಾದ೦ಬರಿ.

A young man, Shivappa, after completing M.B.B.S wants to serve people of his village. He is attracted by the democratic election mechanism believing that he can serve people better. As the Doctor becomes busy with political campaign a person dies because of lack of treatment. Doctor loses in the election and also the incumbent minister loses against a regional leader N S Sadaravalli's son Prakasha Kumara. A small contractor who had helped the minister by providing financial support commits suicide following the loss in election.

About the author

Dr S.L. Bhyrappa is a litterateur par excellence. He writes in the south Indian language, Kannada, and has been the bestselling novelist for over 25 years now. His novels are widely translated to pan Indian languages. He is the bestselling novelist in Marathi over the past decade and is among the top-five bestselling authors in Hindi. He is a conscious artist that depicts fundamental human emotions in his novels. In addition to his profound knowledge of Indian philosophical and cultural traditions, Professor Bhyrappa has since his childhood had intense personal experiences in both rural and urban milieu. Consequently, his characters are deeply rooted in Indian soil. Seminars have been and are being held on his novels, and volumes of literary criticism have been published on his works.

His books have found their way to the curriculum of undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses of the universities in the state of Karnataka, and have been the subject of about 20 PhD dissertations. Travelling has been his paasion since childhood and he has travelled across the globe touching the glaciers of poles, forests of Amazon, deserts of Africa, bustling cities of Europe and the United States. He has trekked in the Alps, the Rockies, Andes and in Fujiama, but the Himalayas remain his greatest passion.

ಮತದಾನ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನ s.lಭೈರಪ್ಪನವ್ರು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದು 1965ನಲ್ಲಿ. ನಾನು ಮೊನ್ನೆ 2023ಯ ಚುನಾವಣೆಯ ದಿನ ಮತ ಚಲಾಯಿಸಿ ಮನೆಗೆ ಬಂದವಳು ಇದನ್ನ ಓದೋಕೆ ಶುರು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು. ನನ್ನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಮಾಜಿಕ ವಿಧ್ಯಮಾನಗಳನ್ನು ಸಾರ್ವಕಾಲಿಕವಾಗುವಂತೆ ಬರೆಯವುದು ಕಷ್ಟ ಆದರೂ, ನುರಿತ ಸಾಹಿತಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಅಸಾಧ್ಯವಲ್ಲ ಅನ್ನೋದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ. ಸಮಾಜದ ಸ್ವರೂಪ ಸದಾ ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತಲೇ ಇರುವ ಈ ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲೂ ಮಾನವನ ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥ, ಸ್ವಹಿತ ಚಿಂತನೆ, ಉದಾತ್ತತೆ(ಇದ್ದರೆ) ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಅಂದಿನಂತೆಯೇ ಇದ್ದೇಯಿದೆ. ಓದುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದಂತೆ ನನಗೆ ಚುನಾವಣೆ ಘೋಷಣೆಯಾಗೋ ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಮೊದಲಿಂದಲೇ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ವಿಧ್ಯಮಾನಗಳು, ಚುನಾವಣಾ ಪ್ರಚಾರ, ಮತಯಾಚನೆ, ಪಾರ್ಟಿ ಪಾಲಿಟಿಕಲ್ ಸ್ರ್ಟಾಟಜಿಗಳು ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ಕಣ್ಣಮುಂದು ಹಾದು ಹೋದವು.

ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಭೌತಿಕವಾಗಿ ನಮ್ಮ ನಡುವೆ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಇದ್ದಾಗ ಅವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನ ಓದೋದು ನನಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟು ಕಷ್ಟವಾಗುತ್ತೆ ಅನ್ನೋದನ್ನ ಯೋಚಿಸಿಯೇ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಮತದಾನದ ಎರಡು ಪುಟ ಓದುವುದೊರಳಗೆ ನಾನು ನಿಯಂತ್ರಣ ತಪ್ಪಿದ ಕಣ್ಣೀರಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗಿದ್ದೆ, ಬಿಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲಾಗದ ಗಂಟಲು ಹಿಂಡುವಂತ ದುಃಖ. ಗೊತ್ತು, ಅವರ ಮೇಲೆ ನನ್ನ ಹುಚ್ಚು ಅಭಿಮಾನ ಈ ತೀವ್ರತರದ ಭಾವನೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಕಾರಣ ಅಂತ. Reading his book feels different now. His absence lingers on every page,he never fades, he echoes.

ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆಯೇ ಹೇಳುವಂತೆ “ಮತದಾನ” ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ರಾಜಕೀಯ, ಚುನಾವಣೆ ಮತ್ತು ಮತದಾನದ ಸುತ್ತ ಹೆಣೆದಿರುವಂತದ್ದು. ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನ ಬರೆದು ಅರವತ್ತೈದು ವರ್ಷಗಳಾಗಿದೆ, ಆದರೆ ಈ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಿರುವ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಹಾಗೆ ಇದೆ, ಇನ್ನೂ ಕೆಳಮಟ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿದೆ ಎಂದರೂ ತಪ್ಪಾಗಲಾರದು. ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರು ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಆರಂಭದ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದಿರುವಂತದ್ದು ಎನ್ನುವ ಛಾಯೆ ದಟ್ಟವಾಗಿದೆ, ಅವರ ಬೆಸ್ಟ್ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಅಂತ ಹೇಳಲ್ಲ ಆದರೆ ಖಂಡಿತ ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಓದಬಹುದು.

ಮತದಾನ - ಎಸ್.ಎಲ್.ಭೈರಪ್ಪ.

ಎಷ್ಟನೆಯ ಸಲ ಓದುವುದೋ ನೆನಪಿಲ್ಲ. ಭೈರಪ್ಪರ ದಟ್ಟ ಚಿತ್ರಣ, ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಮೇಲಾಟ ,ಆದರ್ಶ ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಬೆರೆತ ಅಪ್ಪಟ ಗ್ರಾಮದ ಕಥೆ.
ಡಾಕ್ಟರ್ ಶಿವಪ್ಪನ ಆದರ್ಶ ,ಯಾರದೋ ಚದುರಂಗಕ್ಕೆ ಆತ ದಾಳವಾಗುವ ಬಗೆ ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಈಗಿನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲೂ ಎಷ್ಟು ಸತ್ಯ ಅನಿಸುವುದು ಹೆಚ್ಚುಗಾರಿಕೆ.
ಕಪ್ಪು ಬಿಳುಪು ಎಂದು ವಿಭಜಿಸಲಾಗದ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಗುರುತರ ಅಂಶ.

ಮತದಾನ ಪ್ರತೀ ಚುನಾವಣೆ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲೂ ಓದಬಹುದಾದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿ.

ಎಂದಿನಂತೆ ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಸರಳ ಬರಹ.ಇವತ್ತಿನ ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟಕ್ಕು ಸರಿ ಹೊಂದುವ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತು ಕಾಡುವ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಇಲ್ಲೇ ಎಲ್ಲೋ ನಮ್ಮ ಊರಿನಲ್ಲೆ ನಡೆದಂತಹ ಅನುಭವ.

The novel doesn't have any unique element to leave a lasting impression on our dry summer heart. However, it can offer a glimpse between idealist and opportunist struggle to mobilize in the battle of life. Young man passion and determination to serve society amidst vultures evil intention dragged him all direction is amusing because it made me reflect on our life where all our ideals are butchered in the sharp teeth of cunningness of vultures.
A book may not be a Byrappas great work, But simplistically narrating harrowing issues once again exhibits writer excellence in literature.
Even this book includes a powerful woman(not the feminist type of pseudo strongness) character standing against the toxic social norms prevalent in the pre-independence society. Balanced representation of masculine and feminine nature in female character stand out against all protagonists in his book.
Overall it is a good book by fusing politics, love, social stigmas, money, selfless service, poverty, and village life in one frame.

Matadana is the first novel I read of S L Bhyrappa, one of the most loved Kannada authors. If someone can condense Indian politics and the society's participation in it and make a miniature to fit a village, you will get Matadana.

Though Bhyrappa is not poetic, his grasp of the Indian society gets reflected in the book very well without leaving much to reader's imagination, making reader's job easy.

The novel revolves around the main character who is a doctor by profession and a social servant at heart. Shivappa is an idealist and innocent who preoccupies himself with his work and thoughts of how he could help the people in his native and nearby villages by treating them for free. Meanwhile the political heavyweights of the village come into play and use Shivappa as their pawn in their game by making him contest the election.

The characters of Sadaravalli, contractor Ramalingegowda, minister and Putta thammaiah reflect other qualities such as ego, greed and manipulation which are prevalent in the society.

I particularly liked the character of Rangalakshmi who starts out as a soft rebel and a character of little importance to one who could defy societal norms and become the central character.

The crucial election portrayed in the novel changes the path of everyone in the book. Those who lost just don't lose election but a lot more including their ego, future etc.. and those who won gets bestowed with the power which can change their fortunes.

As many have pointed out, nothing much has changed in Indian elections but for the amount being spent and the lives ruined.

Another thing which needs to be appreciated is the portrayal of relationships.The foundation of marriage is greed in the book instead of love and the same is true for the society we live in.

Overall, Matadana was a good read and I would recommend to anyone who wants to start reading Bhyrappa's books

ಆದರ್ಶ ಒಂದೇ ಮುನ್ನಡೆಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಅನುಭವವೂ ಕೂಡ ತುಂಬ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಮನುಷ್ಯನಿಗೆ. ಅನುಭವಗಳು ಕೊಡುವ ಪರಿಪಕ್ವತೆ ಮತ್ಯಾವದು ನೀಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ಮತದಾನ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಮುಖ್ಯವಸ್ತು ರಾಜಕೀಯ. ಆದರೆ ಕಥೆಯೊಳಗೆ ಸಿಗುವ ಮಾನವನ ನಡವಳಿಕೆಗಳು, ಯೋಚನೆಗಳು, ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಗಳು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ತೆರನಾದ ಆಯಾಮ ನೀಡುತ್ತವೆ ಓದುಗನಿಗೆ.

ತನ್ನ ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಹಳ್ಳಿಗರ ಸೇವೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಶಿವಪ್ಪ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಎಂಬ ಚಕ್ರವ್ಯೂಹದೊಳಗೆ ಒಳಸೇರಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಹೊರಬರಲಾಗದೆ ಸೋಲುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಆದರೆ ಆ ಸೋಲು ಅವನಿಗೆ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಅನುಭವವನ್ನು ನೀಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸಾದರಳ್ಳಿಯ ಸಂಬೇಗೌಡರು ಮತ್ತು ಶಿವಗೆರೆಯ ರಾಮಲಿಂಗೆಗೌಡರು ಪರಸ್ಪರ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ವಿರೋಧಿಗಳು. ಅವರಿಬ್ಬರ ಮನೆಯಿಂದಲೂ ಶಿವಪ್ಪನಿಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧ ಹುಡುಕಿಕೊಂಡು ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಶಿವಪ್ಪ ತನ್ನ ಆದರ್ಶಕ್ಕೆ ವಿದಾಯ ಹೇಳಬಹುದಾದ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಬರುತ್ತೆಂದು ಅರಿವಾಗಿ ಎರಡೂ ಕಡೆಯ ಸಂಬಂಧಗಳನ್ನು ದೂರ ಇಡುತ್ತಾನೆ.
ವಿಪರ್ಯಾಸವೆಂದರೆ ಅವರುಗಳ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಚದುರಂಗದಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಲಿಪಶುವಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವುದು ಅವನಿಗೆ ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ಅರಿವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ತನ್ನ ಪತಿಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ಶಿವಪ್ಪನನ್ನು ಕಲ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ರಂಗಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿ,ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಗಳ ಒತ್ತಡದಿಂದ ಬೇರೆ ಮದುವೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ತನ್ನಪ್ಪ ಸತ್ತ ನಂತರ ಅವಳು ಧೈರ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಅಂಡೆಪಿರ್ಕಿಯಂಥ ಗಂಡನನ್ನು ಧಿಕ್ಕರಿಸಿ ಮುನ್ನಡೆಯುವ ರೀತಿ ಇಷ್ಟವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
(ಸಾಯುವ ಸ್ಥಿತಿಯನ್ನು ಮೂರು ನಾಲ್ಕು ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಟ್ಟಿರುವ ರೀತಿ ಉಸಿರು ಬಿಗಿಹಿಡಿದಂತಾಗುತ್ತದೆ)

ಶಿವಪ್ಪ ನಿಗೆ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಬೇಸರ ತರಿಸಿದರೂ ಅದರಿಂದ ಉಂಟಾದ ಅನುಭವದಿಂದ ತನ್ನ ಆದರ್ಶವನ್ನು ಇನ್ನು ಉತ್ತಮ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂದುವರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.

ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿದ ನಂತರ..ಚುನಾವಣೆಯ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ವಿವಿಧ ರೀತಿಯ ದೊಂಬರಾಟಗಳು,ಹುಚ್ಚಾಟಗಳು ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲೂ, ಎಲ್ಲ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಯಲ್ಲೂ ಒಂದೇ ತೆರನಾಗಿರುತ್ತವ��� ಅನಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ರಾಜಕೀಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಕಾಗಿರುವುದು ಆದರ್ಶ, ಒಳ್ಳೇತನಗಳಲ್ಲ. ಗೆಲ್ಲುವ ರೀತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅದನ್ನು ಉಳಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಛಾತಿ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಬೇಕಾಗಿರುವುದು.

'ಮತದಾನ', ಭೈರಪ್ಪನವರ ಕ್ಲಾಸಿಕ್ ಕೃತಿಯಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೂ ಒಂದು ಉತ್ತಮ ಕೃತಿ.

ಮತದಾನ ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರವಾಗಿಯೂ ಮೂಡಿಬಂದಿದೆ.
ಕಾದಂಬರಿ ಮತ್ತು ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕಥೆಯ ಹೂರಣ ಒಂದೇ ಆದರೂ, ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿತ್ರಿತವಾಗಿರುವ ಧಾಟಿ ಬೇರೆ ರೀತಿಯದು.
ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯನ್ನು ಓದದೆ, ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರ ಮಾತ್ರ ವೀಕ್ಷಿಸಿದರೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಇಷ್ಟವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ..!

ಡಾ.ಶಿವಪ್ಪ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಗಾಂಧಿಯ ಮಾರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೇವೆಮಾಡತೊಡಗಿ ಜನಾದಾರಣೆ ಗಳಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ರಾಮಲಿಂಗೆಗೌಡರು ರಂಗಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿಯನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಮದುವೆ ಮಾಡಲು ಬಯಸಿದಾಗ ಶಿವಪ್ಪ ಒಪ್ಪುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಶಿವಪ್ಪನಿಗೆ ರಂಗಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿಯು ಇಷ್ಟವಿದ್ದರೂ ತನ್ನ ತಾಯಿಯನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ನೋಡಿಕೂಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾಳೋ ಇಲ್ಲವೋ ಎಂಬ ಭಯದಿಂದ ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇದೇ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾದರವಳ್ಳಿಯವರು ಶಿವಪ್ಪನ ಜನಾದಾರಣೆಯನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿಕೂಳ್ಳುವ ತಂತ್ರಹೂಡಿ ಆಳುವ ಪಕ್ಷವು ಇನ್ನೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸೇವೆ ಮಾಡುವ ಅವಕಾಶಗಳು ದೂರೆಯುತ್ತವೆಂಬ ಆಮಿಷಹೂಡಿ ಅವನನ್ನು ಚುನಾವಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಭ್ಯರ್ತಿಯನ್ನಾಗಿ ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಚುನಾವಣಾ ಓಡಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿದ ಶಿವಪ್ಪ ಒಬ್ಬ ರೋಗಿಗೆ ಗಮನ ಕೊಡದೆ ಆ ರೋಗಿ ಸಾಯುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಶಿವಪ್ಪ ಚುನಾವಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸೋಲುತ್ತಾನೆ.ಶಿವಪ್ಪ ತನ್ನ ತಾಯಿಯನ್ನು ಕಳೆದುಕೂಂಡು ತಬ್ಬಲಿಯಾಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳಾದ ರಾಮಲಿಂಗೆಗೌಡರು ಚುನಾವಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸೋಲುತ್ತಾರೆ,ಸಾದರವಳ್ಳಿಯ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಕುಮಾರ ಗೆಲ್ಲುತ್ತಾನೆ, ರಾಮಲಿಂಗೆಗೌಡರು ಚುನಾವಣೆ ಫಂಡಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಆದಾಯದ ಮಿತಿ ಮೀರಿ ಸಾಲಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆ ಸಾಲ ತೀರಿಸಲಾಗದೆ ಕೆರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿದ್ದು ಸಾಯುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಕಡೆ ರಂಗಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿಯ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ರಂಗಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿಯು ಪುಟ್ಟತಮ್ಮಯ್ಯನನ್ನ ಮದುವೆಯಾಗಿ ಸಂಸಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಅನ್ಯೋನ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಬೇರೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕಡೆಗೆ ಶಿವಪ್ಪನಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ರಂಗಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿಗೆ ಪ್ರೀತಿಬೆಳೆದು ಮಾದುವೆಯಾಗಲು ಬಯಸುತ್ತಾರೆ..

Set in 1960s in old mysore region, this novel serves as a mirror to the prevalent conditions of political corruption, casteism and elitism plaguing the indian society. The protagonist whose only aim in life is selfless service of poor (being a doctor) is faced with this dilemma of just continuing to be ordinary or being the savior of silent majority by contesting for elections.
And when he choose to do the latter, the way his value system is sucked and dissected in the deep rooted political customs of corruption and casteism and his sheer helplessness is being delicately dealt with.
Also the concept of marriage slowly becoming a sort of a business is presented.
With all the hopelessness story though proceeds in a happy note with most of the political bigwigs getting entangled in their own mess and biting the dust. Also the protagonist finally finds a way to serve more people by little tweaks in his accepted values and then he leads a content life with a girl who is in support of his selfless attitude.

Its Typical S.L.Bhyrappa Book. There is Politics, Love, Relation and Emotions. The Story Revolves around the doctor who serves public through the profession, and using this as advantage the political parties approach for him to contest in elections. Later he comes to know that he was used by other political parties to win in the elections. In backdrop there is love story of doctor with contractor daughter were this election screws up there lives.The books explains the caste based politics in our country and lot of emotions also. Good one read.

Superb novel a must read, Bhyrappa doesn't shun away from showing the politics involved around the dawn of post independence era. As usual Bhyrappa takes the reader to that era with his discreet way of putting everything together, so much information embedded in the small novel, from the utensils used, the class value of the smallest items, the characterisations, the deep thoughts they are involved with, the transport system, the evolution of many things post the independence, the politics involved in the grand Karnataka Unification movement...etc.

ಇದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೇಳುವುದೇನೆಂದರೆ, ಇದರ ಕಥಾ ವಸ್ತು ಹಾಗೂ ಅದು ನಡೆಯುವ ಕಾಲಮಾನ ತುಂಬಾ ಹಳೆಯದಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಕೂಡ ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳು ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಸರಿ ಹೊಂದುತ್ತವೆ ..... ಕಥಾ ನಾಯಕನು ತಾನು ತನ್ನ ಹೃದಯದ ಮಾತು ಹಾಗೂ ತನ್ನ ತಾಯಿಯ ಮಾತಿಗೆ ಬೆಲೆ ಕೊಡುವುದೋ ಅಥವಾ ತಾನು ನಡೆದು ಬಂದ ಆದರ್ಶದ ಹಾದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡಿಯುವುದೋ ಎಂಬ ಗೊಂದಲದ ವಿವರಣೆ ......... ಕಾಲಮಾನ ಆಗಿನದ್ದಾದರೂ ಒಂದು ಕ್ಷಣವೂ ಬೇಸರ ತರದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ.....

Brilliant book!! The story of a man who desires to change the system around him and gets a feeling of the harsh reality of life. S.L.Bhyrappya proves time and again that he is one of the greatest storytellers in the vernacular space of Indian Literature. The story, character setting, inner struggles of characters are very well portrayed. Mathadana which means voting, explores the tragedy of electorate in rural India and dance of democracy. A Must Read !

ಈ ವರ್ಷ ಓದಿದ ಎಸ್ ಎಲ್ ಭೈರಪ್ಪರವರ ಮೊದಲ ಪುಸ್ತಕ. ಎಂದಿನಂತೆ ಗರಿಷ್ಠ ಉತ್ಕೃಷ್ಟತೆಯ ಬರಹ, ಬಲಿಷ್ಠವಾದ ವಸ್ತು ಮತ್ತು ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಜಾಣತನದಿಂದ ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಸಹಜ ಭಾವನೆಗಳ ನಿರೂಪಣೆ.
